But Black Women Can’t: Wear those colors….

Welcome to another But Black Women Can’t post. The purpose of this series to dispel the many myths and stereotypes that have haunted Black women for centuries. Colors we can’t wear, products we shouldn’t touch….it’s getting old. It’s time we start reclaiming our identities and defining our own beauties. Who’s with me?!! Email your suggestions to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Recently I received an email from a reader regarding my post on MAC’s Peppermint Patti nail polish. Who remembers this polish?

I loved it then and I still love this beautiful color. The reader told me that she thought the color was gorgeous but that it would look better on fair skin. Now….I am a reasonable lady and can understand the miscommunication that can happen with words. I emailed her back just to make sure that I understood what she was saying. She confirmed with this,

“There are just some colors that darker skinned people can’t wear.”

Now before some of you get all crazy, consider how many times you or someone who know may have said or thought this. I know that at one point I didn’t think that brown ladies could wear yellow eyeshadow. Three years ago, I would have never worn a color like Peppermint Patti on my nails.

But to all brown ladies out there who think that they can not wear a color, guess what?

You can.

I like to think that all women of all shades can rock ALL colors beautifully. Do certain colors flatter us better? Of course…but does that mean we should only STICK to those colors? Hell no!

So thank you, dear Reader for your message for it prompted this post. I know your words were not meant to hurt. I also know that brown women have not always been the image of beauty (at least in mainstream media) but times are changing.

I would love to hear the thoughts of all women on this topic. Do you think that there are certain colors that certain shades of women can not wear?

Speak on it!

(Thanks @Nicolette517 for this idea!)

ETA: Ironically enough, one of my favorite nail polish blogger shows off Peppermint Patti today on her blog too. She has fair skin I think this color looks amazing on her! Go check out Nail Juice.

Mascara Monday: Revlon DoubleTwist Volumizing mascara

It’s Monday again! Which means it is time for another mascara review. Are yall sick of these yet? For some reason I don’t get tired reviewing them. Ain’t that somethin’? Continue reading to see what I thought about Revlon’s newest mascara.

Revlon DoubleTwist mascara

Price: 4 out of 5 (I got this for $8.99 at Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What it claims: “Revolutionary brush combines traditional bristles with innovative defining bristles for luscious volume and remarkable definition.” (per packaging)

The truth:
Revolutionary brush, my foot. Using this wand was a nightmare. Which is funny because at initial glance it looks fairly harmless.

What I loved about it: Kudos to Revlon for being unique in coming up with a wand that has traditional bristles AND the 3D bristles. The idea sounds cool enough.

What I didn’t like: This needs only few words.

Overall: This is a huge FAIL as far as mascaras go. It has a great deal of elements that make mascaras bad.

-Difficult to use
-Clump-a-licious
-Wand is too big to control
-Formula makes lashes hard

I mean, honestly, Revlon…..what were yall thinking? First of all, while the wand does look pretty cool, it doesn’t make much sense. Unless you “twirl” the wand, you won’t benefit using both the “revolutionary brush” or “innovative defining bristles” in one application. I suppose you could apply one coat using the brush and then another coat with the bristles. That would work.

IF the wand was not so coated with icky mascara. I found that I picked up A LOT of product just from pull of the wand. And what a mess it was. The hole to the mascara wand is enormous so it makes sense as to why you end up pulling out a lot of product. Seriously, this hole is like bigger than the drain in my bathtub.

So aside from this heavily coating the mascara, you are also wasting a great deal of the mascara itself. Just look how much mascara is on this baby!

And the clumps speak for themselves.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Of course, as with any AWFUL mascara performance, I have to consider than maybe I purchased a bad tube. Which could have been the case. Or maybe it just really sucked. Either way….I ain’t purchasing this one again. And if you have smaller lids/lashes….don’t even think about it!

Really want to see how clump-a-licious this mascara is? Check out the video review. It’s shocking!

What do you think? Did I just get a crappy tube or does Revlon usually have crap-tastic mascaras? What say you?

Enjoy your Monday!!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

[EDIT]Clumps of Mascara readers are on it! Reader Lauryn has alerted me that this mascara is on sale at Walgreens for $6.99. Interested in trying it? Now is the time! Sale ends Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya Remove +

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

For someone who polishes her nails every day I need a GREAT nail polish remover. No, I mean spectacular! I need a remover that not only gets rid of every bit of polish on my nails, but also conditions my nails and cuticles. It would also help if it didn’t smell absolutely horrid. I never thought such a polish remover existed until I tried Zoya’s Remove +.

I don’t think that I will EVER purchase another nail polish remover.

Here’s what Zoya says about Remove +:

Color Lock-Step 1: Big Flipper Bottle filled with Remove+.Three in one-The perfect remover, nail cleaner and nail prep product all together in on great solution. Great lavender scent.”

Here’s what I say about it:

-Effective
-Smells so much better than traditional nail polish remover
-Conditions cuticles and nail beds
-Is a beautiful shade of purple.

I am kidding about that last bit but my 8 oz bottle is almost hittin’ the bottom.

My bottle was $9 and probably a little steep for a nail polish remover. However, I’ll spend the extra dollars to have my nails look the way they do after using Zoya’s Remove +.

Beauty Bee-haviors: Eco-Friendly Products

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.
What are some of your favorite
eco-friendly beauty brands and products?

In the past year or so I have found myself incorporating more eco-friendly brands in my life. I find it exciting that so many mainstream companies are taking the leap into products that aren’t only better for us, but better for the environment.

My favorite brands?

-EcoTools brushes. But, of course.
-Kiss My Face
-Oyin Handmade
-Burts Bees
-Zoya
-Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps
-Tarte
-Carol’s Daughter
-Physician’s Formula
-….and countless baby company shops on Etsy.

Tell me yours!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!! That beautiful logo comes from an organization in Ohio (hi Grandma!) called Picture This. For 2 days, Central Ohioan volunteers will plant trees and clean up their beautiful grounds. I decided to feature this logo because wow….it says a lot!

I’m not going to pretend like I am a veteran Earth Day celebrator. In fact, this is my FIRST year really recognizing it. But better late than never.

I spent some time outside with Mother Earth yesterday and basked in her beauty. I don’t think I will ever take Floridian weather for granted–at least around this time of year. Every day is a beautiful day. When I think of Earth I immediately think of the colors green and blue. So I snapped some of Earth’s natural colors and also showed off my replicas of those colors via beauty products/looks. And of course the former poet in me had to drop cheesy haiku.

GREEN
Yep. Our Earth is green.
Green like the land all over.
But are we green too?

Green polishes arguing about who will make it in the photo shoot…

They managed to get it together.Only my favorites made this cut.

Green MAC/Milani shadows had to make an appearance. Including that glittery Swimming. That was my 2nd MAC shadow.

The single soldiers…

Green eyes.

BLUE
Oh blue is the sky.
Regal. Despite pollution
So is the sky blue?

(think about it…heavy, uh? LOL!)

My blue polishes are a little more civil than the green polishes.

A MAC palette of blues.

Blue eyes..

I am doing better with being eco-friendly. I recycle when I can, bring my own bags when I go grocery shopping and marvel at Earth a few minutes a day. And instead of buying a crap load of bottled waters, I now have a water filter. Earth takes care of us. Let’s take care of her!

Urban Decay revamps Primer Potion

Back in the day when Clumps of Mascara was a baby blog and had a good 2-3 readers, I wrote a post on Urban Decay’s Primer Potion and how the packaging is worse then finding an expired coupon.

I ain’t playing…it was pretty terrible.

I’d like to think that I am responsible for the “cutting UDPP down the middle to reveal more product” idea going mainstream. Nah, I’m jivin’, but ’til this day, that is my most popular post. Ever.

Ain’t that somethin’? You can check it out HERE.

I wrote that post a little over a year ago.
Fast forward to 2009 and guess what Urban Decay has done?

Blackberry coconut zebra!!

(I can’t be the only person that shouts
random words when they get excited…lol)

I feel like Urban Decay should have thrown “New packaging unveiling” parties all over the world. This is such a big deal to me. Many of us beauty bloggers, YouTube gurus and consumers expressed our frustration and outright annoyance with the way that the initial wand went STRAIGHT down in the tube. A LOT of us ended up throwing away what we thought were empty tubes, when in reality, over 60% of the product was left.

*tisk tisk*

Dissatisfaction in large numbers can lead to changes, people. We did it!

I actually STOPPED using this product because I got irritated with always having to do surgery on it just to get my $17 worth of primer. Will I trash my Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer and stock up on UDPP? Hells no. But I don’t mind finally trying the Primer Potion in Sin.

Now that looks hot. Has anyone tried it?

Will the new wand work? We shall seeee! The Primer with the new wand will only be availabile at UrbanDecay.com for now.

Sin shall be mine!

…..the primer, Mom. Not like sin SIN. :)

Urban Decay Urban Ammo Eye palette

Ohmigoodness, I can’t believe how little I have talked about Urban Decay here at Clumps of Mascara. What a tragedy considering that UD is one of my favorite brands. I mean, I SWEAR by their eyeliners. I did cartwheels when I first discovered the Primer Potion. And I wanted to marry the eye shadows when I first saw them.

Urban Decay is sheer awesomeness and although they aren’t the cheapest cosmetic brand out there, they are unique and innovative.

I always wanted this palette but never got around to purchasing it. A 15% off coupon from Sephora Beauty Insiders as well as a gift card, however, had to running to Sephora on a lunch break. How beautiful and versatile are these colors?

Sin does well as a browbone color on brown skin! Look out for some of my looks using this palette.

This baby will definitely be going with me on my future travels. I can see myself coming up with quite a few looks be it work appropriate neutral or after 5 fierceness. I am really trying to convince myself that I also need the Deluxe Shadow box.

What do you think? Should I snag it?
