Sista Show-Off: HelloBeautiful.com

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Admit it….you have looked in the mirror before and said, “Hello Beautiful!”

*crickets*

C’mon yall….don’t make me out to be the only semi-vain person in here. You’ve done it before. You know you have. And you don’t do it because you are crazy full of yourself. Sometimes it feels good to feel beautiful. Of course on the inside, but also out the out.

That’s what HelloBeautiful is all about…..feeling good!

Hello Beautiful got its start from BlackPlanet.com (I used to be ALL over that site in college) and is a wonderful little portal for Women of Color. Whether its fashion, beauty, finances and relationships, Hello Beautiful is truly like visiting a friend’s home. You feel comfortable enough to let it all out on the message boards. You crack up over the postings from the featured bloggers. And nod your head in agreeance with interracial dating. Oh yes, it’s deep.

An article of mine pops up on the site every now and then too.

Stroll through and let me know what you think!

Goodbye Beautiful!

Beauty Review: Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser

Hello beautiful people. Wait…..don’t tell me that you haven’t heard of an underarm cleanser. Surely you jest!

Okay, I’m not even ‘gon lie. Until trying Clarsskin’s, I haven’t heard of one either. What exactly is the point of this stuff? Isn’t it the same thing as body wash?

“I don’t get it, B! Please explain.”

I’m on it. I guarantee that by the time you finish reading this post, you may consider trying a product like this.

Introducing….

Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser

Price: 2 out of 5 ($22 for a 4 oz bottle)
Packaging: I can dig it! I wish it was a little bigger though.
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:
Clarsskin Underarm Cleanser contains a unique patent pending combination of an effective chelating agent with special agents. This complex mixture is specifically designed to remove antiperspirant deodorant residue, efficiently and mildly.” (source)

The truth:
It works!

What I loved about it: It really gave my underarms a different kind of clean. And it’s a pretty groovy shower gel as well!

What I didn’t like:
I suppose the price is a little steep considering the bottle isn’t so big. It will go quickly because you will use it as often as you use body wash or soap.

Overall:
I know what you’re thinking. And like you, I was a little skeptical about an underarm cleanser but it REALLY works. Deodorant has a way of REALLY sticking to the pits, doesn’t it? And no matter how hard you scrub, sometimes it doesn’t come off. And of course over-scrubbing causes irritation. Clarsskin is pretty cool because it removes that residue. Completely. I can see it working for men in particular. Most of our guys have hairy pits and I would imagine that Clarsskin would remove every trace.

It also doubles as a slick shower gel! I got a close shave with this stuff. Yall know how much I love multi-purpose products.

This product is for you if you really have an issue with removing deodorant from your underarms. You can find out more about Clarsskin HERE.

What do you think? Sound like a product you could get some use out of? Or not so much?

The Makeup Show LA: Drugstore Stalking, Installment 2

Welcome back to another installment of my experience in Los Angeles for The Makeup Show LA. In the first post, we talked a little bit about The Makeup Show’s background and purpose. Let’s take a brief intermission to talk about drugstore stalking in the City of Angels.

When I lived in LA. I enjoyed nothing more than taking the 204 bus from the corner of Slauson and Vermont allllll the way down to Beverly Blvd. Before heading to the Beverly Center, I would always attack the Longs Drugs store off of Beverly and LaCienga. Longs Drugs has had a major facelift since the last time I visited.

[NOTE: While the Blackberry can save lives and make traffic lights turn green when I need it to, what it doesn't do too well is take decent pictures. Please excuse the fuzziness.]

For one, the beauty aisle is wider and a lot more attractive.

No more

fighting bumping into fellow customers to grab your favorite on sale items. And wow….wood floors? Longs sure knows how to make a girl feel special.

If you can make your way through the beauty aisle, you will eventually run right smack into a beauty consultantation corner. Wait a second….is this Macy’s or a drugstore?

Of course these brands are a little more expensive than your Olay Complete moisturizer but it is great that the option is there. And besides, this is Beverly Hills. Spending $80 on beauty products in a drugstore is probably the norm.

And what is that I see? Hair products that require you running down a sales associate to get a key?

These babies aren’t behind glass for nothin’. These salon-sold products are also sold at Longs Drugs store locations.

I did a little research (see how much I love, yall?) and found an article from Reuters.com about an opening of a Longs Drugs in Carpinteria, California. It said the following about the Beauty Department,

“The beauty department is designed to encourage customers to spend time browsing, testing and touching the skin care and cosmetic product offering.” (source).

The more attractive the beauty department looks, the more time you will spend there. And the more time you spend there, the louder the items scream out at you. And the louder they scream, the more you buy.

By george, I’ve got it! It makes perfect sense. I’ve heard that this is going on at Walgreens store locations, as well.

Do you think that “beauty department” in drugstores will make you want to spend more? Did you neighborhood drugstore take a turn for the better? I’d love to know!

Until next time….

Amor de Lacquer: MAC’s Peppermint Patti

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

How crazy is it that my last two MAC purchases have been nail polishes? Could it be that I am more into nail polish these days than eye shadows, glosses, liners and blush? Maybe. But I am having so much fun playing around in another area of beauty.

I am in love with MAC’s Peppermint Patti nail polish. It looks absolutely divine! I have gotten quite a few emails about this polish and how it looks on brown skin.

As pretty as it may look, the application was just awful. It took a good three coats. Like most creams, it is streaky but I also found that it was a little watery as well. It wasn’t fun to put on but it being so beautiful on my nails made up for it. As soon as I take China Glaze’s Caribbean Blue off of my toes, good ole’ P.Patti will go on. I think it is a beautiful Spring color.

My eyes may have been playing tricks on me but when I first saw Peppermint Patti, I thought for a quick second that it may look a little like China Glaze’s For Audrey. Opps! I was way off.

(first 2 nails are P.Patti, the ring finger and pinky are For Audrey) Peppermint Patti is more green whereas For Audrey is more blue. They look nothing alike and both are total must haves, in my opinion.

You can get Peppermint Patti at any MAC store or counter. It is currently sold out online.

Polish Pretty,

Beauty Challenge: Women’s History Month

Guess what, family?

There is another Beauty Challenge in the blogosphere! Every so often us beauty bloggers like to come together and do beauty challenges. Aside from giving us the opportunity to be creative with make-up, it also a) allows us to come together as a community and b) acknowledge historical people/moments. The last Beauty Challenge, Politically Pretty, was such a big hit. Kia from Yummy411 and I hosted the challenge and had over 25 participants post looks that were Election 2008-inspired.

This Beauty Challenge is Gangstarr Girl‘s idea. In honor of Women’s History Month. What Gangstarr Girl says about the challenge,

“The Women’s History Month Beauty Challenge and it’s where participants take a make up look from a woman they admire (she can be anyone from mom to a celebrity but the woman has to be in a picture that displays the look) and recreate the look with her own flavor. On the day of posting, participants will post a pic of their heroine’s look along with a pic of their recreation of it.”

If this isn’t appropriate, I don’t know what is!

If you are interested in participating, leave your name either in this comment box or over at Gangstarr Girl by Thursday, March 26, 2009 so that we know you are participating. We will announce participants the following day. You can also email me at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Deadline to post FOTDs is Monday, March 30, 2009!!!!! That means participants not only post their looks on March 30th, but also provide links to the pages of other participants as well. You can see an example of this by the “80’s challenge” link above.

What if I don’t have a blog?

You can still participate. Of course you would have to email your photo(s) and statements to us. And then we would showcase them in a separate post on March 27, 2009. Please make sure to send us your photo(s) and snippets by Thursday, March 26!!!

Mascara Monday: Lash Control-Volume

Happy happy Monday, family! Mascara Monday took a little break last week but we are up and running again and excited to bring you another mascara review.

Here is a brand that focuses strictly on mascara. I was able to meet with Jennifer from Lash Control at The Makeup Show LA and I had a wonderful time chit-chatting with her about all things mascaras. Of course I had to try one of the mascaras from Lash Control. I chose the lady in purple who represents volume.

Soooo….did it work?

Lash Control-Volume

Price: 2 out of 5 ($20 a little steep for the average mascara)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “The mascara comes with a fitted, snap-down vinyl “baggie” for added protection inside your make-up bag. The extra inch of distance provided by the flexible wiper offers another barrier to air and foreign particle contact with the formula which make the mascara perform better and for a longer period of time.(source)

The truth: Wow! The squeezable tube is pretty cool. No more globs of mascara coming out of the tube.

What I loved about it:
I love the wand. It makes mascara application easy and effortless.

I also liked how weightless two coats of mascara felt on my lashes.

What I didn’t like:
I wish I would have achieved a little more volume.

Overall: Lash Control is a mascara brand that has mascaras specifically for certain needs. Need a waterproof mascara? They have it. Desire curl? They got you covered? Seeking length? Look no futher. I am glad to see a mascara company that tries to cover all of the issues that we have with mascara application and performance. The “flexible wiper sleeve” is incredibly useful.

In the past, I have gotten so irritated with mascara wands that pull out TOO much mascara. You end up having to wipe it along the edges of the mascara tube or wipe it on a tissue. Both actions are unsanitary so in a sense this mascara is helping you keep the germs at bay as well as allowing your mascara to last a little longer.

The idea is ingenious and it works flawlessly.

As far as the mascara, I wished that I got a little more volume. Just a tad bit more. But I won’t complain too much because what I got after only two coats is absolutely beautiful!

(did not curl lashes)

Check out a video of Jennifer from Lash Control! She explains how Lash Control works.

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely. It is innovative and it works!

What do you think? Would you like to try this mascara? How cool is the squeezy-middle? I love it! You can get this mascara and more at the Lash Control website.

Enjoy your Monday, family!

Always,

FOTD Friday: Little Sister Edition

Happy Friday, beautiful people!

This week flew by like crazy. Is it just me or is it extremely difficult to get back into the swing of things after a trip? When it should be 3:00 p.m. it is really only 11:00 a.m. Exactly how does that happen? Is that some cruel trick that time plays on us?

Those are obviously rhetorical questions. But speaking of time, who remembers being 19? I do! It was 5 years ago and I was not as jazzy as my little sister (Courtney, you can pay me later for that compliment). I certainly wasn’t into make-up. My sister is taking over FOTD Friday this week to show you some of her best looks.

A sweet swipe of shadow over the lids is perfect for the young adult who wants to be chic and sophisticated without looking too grown.

A dab of gloss on the lips and what more does she need?

Me at 19 years old?

Yes yall…my brows have always been butchered. Only recently have I gotten them under control. HA!

Did you wear make-up at 19 years old?

Let me know in the comments.

Happy Weekend!

…..and Courtney too.
