Beauty Bubble: First Lady Fab

I have been fortunate enough to have a TON of Black women in my life that represent intelligence, sophistication and class. I have added First Lady Michelle Obama to that list.

“OMG, I’m totally sick of hearing about Barack and Michelle Obama.”

I can only imagine how many people are thinking this. Me, on the other hand, I am having a hard time NOT adding them to every conversation I hold. So much inspiration.

FOTD Friday: Presidential Inauguration Edition

It’s Friday! Ohmigoodness this has been quite a week for me! I have not been home since last Saturday and I can hear my closet calling my name.

For those that don’t know….I have a relationship with my closet. Not sure why I love it so much but I do. I even fall asleep in there sometimes.

*crickets*

And I know I’m not the only one but I digress.

I figured that I would dedicate this FOTD Friday to history!!

The genius in me left my digital camera at home so the following pictures will be from the Blackberry. Which…aren’t that bad. I also purchased a disposable camera but I have yet to get those photos developed.

My view of Capitol Hill…

…I actually had tickets to get IN the event. Blue tickets to be exact. However, I didn’t make it in. Neither did A LOT of ticket holders. I was only able to see him get sworn in via jumbo-tron aka an enormous screen. The crowd of people was breathtaking. Or frightening depending on your point of view.

I walked a good 7 hours that day sans eating/drinking or using the restroom. All were impossible to do with that many people. It was hard to locate anything!

I climbed on top of a barricade just to get this picture. Wow!

We also ran up hills, slid through bushes and broke down fences….desperate to get to a jumbo-tron in time to see the President get sworn in. Even finding one of those was a challenge! There had to have been at least 4 of them. What?! Look at the masses tearing down a fence.

Inauguration Day tweets from Twitter:

7:19 a.m. — Walking to the swearing in ceremony
8:33 a.m. — Walking to the Blue Gate. So many Obamanites
8:44 a.m. — Just saw someone I graduate with. Imagine that!! All of these people.
9:02 a.m. — Gates open. Ticket holders all cheered. We see the promised land!
9:20 a.m. — My hands are freezing. Tweeting is becoming a struggle.
9:38 a.m. — Seriously…there is so much line confusion.
10:24 a.m. —
You think you’re all exclusive b/c you have a ticket just to
realize that 2 million other folx have tickets too.
10:38 a.m. — There’s no way we’re getting in. People are screaming “Let us in.”
10:42 a.m — People are pissed. We aren’t going to see it in person or on T.V. Damn.
11:33 a.m. — I really want to cry.
12: 13 p.m. — We see a screen! Okay, I’m better now. At least I can watch him.

…..around that time I lost service completely. In fact, most people did. I was unable to tweet and make/receive phone calls and text messages until around 3:00 p.m.

But I was there. I participated in history by voting for Barack Obama and witnessed it by being there.

More photographs…and better ones at that.

Look at Sasha Obama. I love her! This is classic. Shows her innocent and admiration of her Father. Tears welled up when I saw this photo.

Darling Malia. She has so much class for a 10-year old. Look at the gaze to her Father. It’s like they are talking with their eyes. *more tears*

No words. I mean….what can you say?

I absolutely love Vice President Biden’s personality. And we won’t even get on the fabulousness that was Dr. Jill Biden’s ball gown.

No matter your party affiliation, you have to have been affected by this event in some way. I even have friends from other countries who have been inspired by the Obamas. Yes we did!

What were some of your thoughts? Did you go? I will be traveling throughout the weekend but hope to catch up on comments and showing my blog family love soon!

Have a great weekend!

[HAPPY 19th BIRTHDAY, COURTNEY!!
…..there’s your gift so leave me alone…lol!]

Brown & Blushin': Smashbox’s O-Glow Cheek color

It’s the series all about brown ladies and blushes! Here’s a product that I have had for almost 6 months and I am just now sharing it with the family. Please excuse the delay. Pero better late than never. I remember when I first heard about Smashbox’s O-Glow Intuitive Cheek color. I HAD to have.

This silicone-based clear gel is infused with vitamins for the skin.

Now the question that I’m sure most of my brown girls are asking is, “Does it really work for us?”

Yes!

It goes on like a gel….

And after a few seconds, you get a nice “flush” of raspberry pink.

Can you see it? While it works, I have a problem with putting it on. How do you do it? With fingers? A brush? I find that neither is effective–hence why I have never really used the product. So while Smashbox gets an A+ from me in the innovative department, I will have to give them a D- on usability.

Have you ever tried this product? Or would you be interested in trying it? Any tricks of how I can get it to work? Tell me!!

Cuz I’m brown and can still blush,

FDA Approved Drug for Longer Lashes

….not quite but it could be coming soon

What do you think? What if you could walk into your doctor’s office and requested a prescription for longer and fuller lashes. Would do you do?

Check out this article that a reader sent me (thanks Suzie from NYC!!!). Peep that part that talks about how much we spend on mascaras annually. Wowsers!! Could this be the end to mascara purchasing?

Tell me your thoughts after you finish reading.

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Twist Collection, Part 1

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

If I could be BFFs with a nail polish collection, I am thinking that Zoya’s Twist would be it! What a fun Spring collection. It offers a little something for every one. And of course, I think it is brown girl friendly. I have been getting quite a few emails/comments about “polishes that work for brown skin”. You know me—I think we can rock anything! But for yall’s sake, I will identify the polishes that aren’t as flattering on us. How’s that sound?

First up, Cassi. This color is described as a shimmering soft pink and I agree. It is just that! I was happy to have it as I don’t have any color in my collection like it. I think I would prefer it more on the toes than my fingers but she is a beaut nonetheless.

Now we have, Malia! Ohmigoodness, I love this color. I knew I would love it for two reasons alone: it’s purple and it’s a creme. My weakness!! And it doesn’t help that it has the same name as my darling baby cousin, Malia Obama. This color is described as a violet creme and man oh man does it look beautiful. It looks like one of those pastel easter eggs. My loctician couldn’t stop complimenting me when she saw me in this color.

If purple is my favorite nail polish color than grays would probably come in at a close second. I can’t get enough of them and Harley rocks my heart. This soft shimmering gray looks divine! I thought it would look like O.P.I.’s Sheer Your Toes but it is a more intense shade of gray and I think I prefer this one better. It’s an unexpected color from a nail polish Spring collection but I adore it.

Got your eye on any of these babies here? Buy these and more for $6/bottle at Zoya.com. Or better yet, get the Sampler for only $36! Stay tuned for Part 2 of Zoya’s Twist Collection.

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Amor de Lacquer: Polish Storage

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Once upon a time, a few months ago, maybe….I didn’t have many nail polishes.

“B!! Surely, you jest.”

Noooope, it was until very recently when I have started collecting nail polishes. This time last year I had less than 15. Now I have over 100. Which I know is more than the average person’s but I bet my favorite nail bloggers have three times as many. Nonetheless, if you walk any where in my super neat room, you are bound to find a bottle of nail polish somewhere.

By the television…

On the night stand…

They are every where!! I am still storing them in a crate in my closet.

What a mess! And that’s just half of them. My accessories are cramped somewhere else and it’s getting a little frustrating. I am a neat freak and I can not stand clutter or an over-abundance of anything. So it looks like I will be giving away the colors that I don’t use/like. But in the meantime I have to figure out how to house them neatly. Any suggestions?

How many nail polishes do you have? Give me an average number…

ETA: I have sense changed my nail polish set-up. Check it out here.

Beauty Review: Dr. Susan Taylor Rx for Brown Skin’s Skin Brightener

[EDITOR’S NOTE]: I am in DC for this historical Presidential Inauguration.

I love when I can safely brag about MANY products from a particular skincare line. Oftentimes I may like the cleanser but not the moisturizer. Or the other way around. Truthfully, I don’t have many negatives about about any of the products I have tested from the Rx for Brown Skin line. Here’s another product that delivers!

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Naturally Flawless
Advanced Botanical Brightener

Hyperpigmentation, without a doubt is an issue that ALL women deal with but it seems to be more prevalent among women of color. I remember having an issue with hyperpigmentation at a very young age. It didn’t bother me too much until fairly recently and I am glad that I ran into this product at this point in my life.

Honestly….it either works or I’m seeing things. I would argue that it is the former simply because I KNOW my skin. I analyze it daily and know every spot, blemish and imperfection. So I KNOW that this product is working for me.

What it is “supposed” to do:

  • Gently brightens brown skin with natural ingredients
  • Helps to promote uniform skintone
  • Is Hydroquinone-free

(source)

You are supposed to apply a little in the a.m. and p.m. and then follow up with your regular moisturizer. I have been doing this for a little over 3 weeks and I have noticed a HUGE improvement of the dark spots on my face. They are slowly fading away. Might I add that these dark spots are fairly new. Not ones that I have had for years.

The brightener goes on like any moisturizer.

….a few swipes and it’s gone.

At $36.00 for a 1.5 oz, I can’t say that it is the cheapest little product but I’ve never been the one to NOT buy a skincare product because of its high price. Taking care of your skin is an investment so I’m not complaining!

What do you use to get rid of those dark spots? I’ve will always hail cocoa butter but this brightener is the truth! In 5 months, I’m thinking that ALL of the dark spots on my face will be gone. How great would that be?

Con Amor,
