Mascara Monday: Shiseido-The Makeup Mascara Base

Greetings and hot chocolate, friends! Did yall have a wonderful weekend? I was happy to finally spend mine at home. I’ve been traveling since the holidays so it was nice to be stable for a “hot minute“—as my Mommy would say. I’m off to D.C. next weekend but that’s one getaway that I can not wait for.

Ahhh, so let’s see. This mascara review is long over do. I have had this baby here for quite some time. Shiseido mascara base is supposedly a “cult fave” among beauty gurus, editors and novices. Did it pass my tests? Make me smile? Have I found an awesome mascara primer?

Shiseido The Makeup
mascara base

Price: 3 out of 5 ($22 from Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “A clear base coat for eyelashes that improves mascara application and wear as it boosts volume and curl. Adds dramatic definition to the eyes.” (source)

The truth: Definitely decent as far as mascara primers go.

What I loved about it:
I love the fact that it isn’t white like most mascara bases. In fact it has a gel-esque texture that I can appreciate. It didn’t make my lashes feel heavy and “loaded” like primers tend to do.

What I didn’t like: While it did give me a little extra volume, it wasn’t anything to do cartwheels over. I don’t think it is a necessary step in mascara application.

Overall: Okay, so here’s what I REALLY like about this mascara primer..how much easier it makes mascara application. If you find that your lashes really don’t cooperate well with mascara application, this primer can do the trick. I found it easy to apply. My lashes were longer and I think it gave me a little curl. When I applied the first coat of mascara, I found that I didn’t HAVE to do a second or third coat because the primer had already assisted in giving me extra volume. Which I suppose is a good thing.

I could not STAND the brush.

Eww….I mean…why does it look like that? It is a little challenging trying to get that messy brush through your lashes. Another plus for Shiseido mascara base is the wear. It holds up! Or maybe the mascaras I use for it are already up to par in the wear department.

IDK, my BFF Jill. <---random, I know. I actually say this when something confuses me. It’s rather hard to review primers. They are dependent on a lot; how your lashes already look, what you are trying to achieve, the mascara you are using and how much you put on. If you are trying to decide if you need one, I would think of it this way—does your mascara need extra “umph”? If so, maybe a primer would work for you. But then at this price, you are better off purchasing ANOTHER mascara. I don’t know….see, it’s hard!

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara
(NO primer)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara
(primer)

Would I recommend it?: Not really. Not because I didn’t like it but because I’m not sure how necessary it is for regular mascara users. But if you like primers then yes….this is a good one!

Are you a fan of mascara primers? Have any favorites? Don’t see their purpose? Tell me what you think…..

Let It Clump: The Crowned Chronicles-my hair blog

This series is where we stop talking about make-up to explore other areas of beauty and beyond. That’s anything! Hair, fashion, jacked up love lives..anything! Any suggestions? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Since I’ve been blogging through good ole’ ClumpsOfMascara.com here, my hair has gone through some changes.

There was the ultra fro….

…but then I made the mistake of straightening it.

…and my hair never recovered so I had to cut it off.

….and then I decided to make the commitment to start growing locs.

It has almost been a month since I started my loc journey blog. To see what I’m up to, follow my journey there.

FOTD: New Year Eve look

Happy Friday! Time for this week’s Face of the Day (FOTD)!

Man, I wish I could rewind time. Last Friday was my birthday and boy was it a great one. It’s been a week since I’ve been 24 and I’m lovin’ it so far. I’m wondering when I’m supposed to feel “old”. A friend of mine (who is a good 10 years older than me) told me that after 23 it all goes down hill.

Uh…I don’t think so!!

Anyway, check out my New Year’s Eve look. I was in Atlanta with some friends. We did dinner at Twist and then went to downtown Atlanta to watch the peach drop. I wish I had pictures of me running around in my boots saying “Happy New Year’s!!” to strangers. Good times, good times….

FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick in Brownie (cheeks)

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
NARS Albatross highlighter
MAC Firespot e/s
Make Up For Ever #92
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Electric
MAC Blacktrack Fluidline
Lancome Définicils Pro mascara

LIPS:
MAC Nightmoth lipliner
MAC Girl About Town lipstick (see, I love it!)

See those gold star earrings I copped from H&M? I loved them! Can I still wear them without looking cheesy? What do yall think? Hmm…

I am normally a church goer for New Year’s Eve so this was a nice little switch up. Did you have any looks for the holiday?

Tell me.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Beauty + Fitness: Wii Fit called me fat!

I have a confession.

I’m pretty obsessed with fitness. I think about it all the time. I am consciously always counting calories. And I have finally gotten to the point where I actually enjoy waking up in the morning to run my miles.

But nothing, I mean nothing beats my Wii Fit.

I got it for Christmas and can’t stop playing it.

The Wii Fit and I were good friends until it called me “overweight” *gasp* Imagine my horror! Apparently the Wii Fit didn’t know that I had already gone from 201 lbs to a little less than 180 lbs in the past 6 months. And surely the Fit didn’t know that my dangerously high blood pressure around 150 was dropped and stabalized to the normal 125-130 range. Yikes.

No worries. I continue to jump out of bed to run every morning and jump on the white board every night.

Fitness is beauty, family. Doesn’t matter how beautiful your gloss is. Or how “fab” your new boots are. High blood pressure doesn’t know that you massage your cuticles every night. Diabetes could care less if you spent $19 on that Make Up For Ever 92 eye shadow color (hehe). None of that matters.

THIS JUST IN: MUFE 92 can prevent anxiety/stress. Swatch it on your fingertip and see what I’m talkin’ about

We have to start taking better care of our bodies…not just on the outside, but on the inside, as well.

What do you think? Would you like to see more health related/weight loss posts on Clumps of Mascara? Do you think that health is relative to beauty or not so much?

I would love to know your thoughts. I also have a poll on the left hand side of the page. Vote por favor!

Stay beautiful but more importantly, stay healthy,

Beauty Review: L’Oreal HiP’s Color Presso

Greetings gorgeous people!

If there is one thing I love….it’s innovative beauty. New ideas, concepts, technologically beauty operated stuffs and ultra cool packing. It excites me and shows that as the world progresses…so does the world of beauty!

L’Oreal HiP’s Color Presso thingies are like….so…totally cool!

I mean, look at it.

That’s Sally Hansen’s Night Lily on the nails, by the way

That’s a sexy lip gloss, uh? I purchased (782) Ritzy Color Presso from Wal-greens for $12.99. Now normally I wouldn’t purchase L’Oreal HiP regular price because drugstores usually have Buy 1, Get 1 sales but I just had to share this with my family….that would be yall.

ALERT: L’Oreal is on sale at CVS: Buy 1, Get 1 Free!! Check the ad here.

Per L’Oreal’s website:

“Grab Hold of Endless Color Combinations
Press one side for a single shade
Press two sides to mix and blend hundreds more
Press to Express”

Well, I don’t know about “hundreds” but I see what you’re gettin’ at, Lo HiP. This is such a cool product. The packaging is just so much fun. And look how funny it looks when you squeeze both tubes.

Ha! That just tickles me.

And you can even wear it as an accessory!

Okay, I’m kidding about that last bit but it’s one product that has endless uses. It is a little on the pricey side being a few dollars short of some higher end brands.

What I DON’T like about this product is that the gloss factor doesn’t last as long as I would like for it to. I’ve encountered this with many Lo HiP lip products. Granted this is better than most but it still is almost non-existent after an hour or so. Boo to that.

Check out my video review (warning: I’m a mess)

Actually, L’Oreal HiP has a ton of goodies in store for us. Look what I caught on Crackberry:

Ah haaaa….

I think I’ll wait for BOGO before I purchase any thing else.

What do you think? Have you tried this? Want to? Not interested?

Don’t act like you’re too cute to be shoppin’ in the drugstore, girl!

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Tart

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I am so enamored with nail polishes that I had a hard time trying to figure out which ones to take with me on my trip to Atlanta. I seriously stood looking at my 100+ stash trying to figure out which bottle would be one of the “lucky ones”. Zoya’s Tart managed to catch my eye and I proclaimed it to be my official birthday polish color. Tart did not disappoint.

It took only 2 coats to get the bottle color. One coat could have probably done the trick because the color is so rich. I have been using the Dazzle Dry Nail System for my base and top coats and it is AMAZING (review coming soon). Zoya’s Tart lasted a good 2 days, which is darn near a record for me considering I polish my nails every day. I loved wearing this electric blue on my birthday. I don’t get to play around with brighter colors because of work so this was a nice little treat for me.

Of course I had to be all extra with it.

Yes I was playing “celebrity” in that little get-up. My best friend went around honking and I waved to people telling them that it was my birthday. I’m a mess like that.

So thank you, Zoya Tart. You made my birthday so cool….like icy cold blue.

*crickets*

Okay….I thought it was funny. Smile because I know you thought so too. You can purchase this Big 3 Free polish from Zoya.com for $6. As a matter of fact…you can actually get it for free! Zoya has a dynamite trade-in deal going on right now. I say you dive in. Zoya’s selection and polish formulas are insanely amazing. Click the image below for details.
