Con Todo Mi Amor,

But Black Women Can’t: Wear Bright Lipsticks

Hello family! Welcome to another But Black Women Can’t post. The purpose of this series to dispel the many myths and stereotypes that have haunted Black women for centuries. Colors we can’t wear, products we shouldn’t touch….it’s getting old. It’s time we start reclaiming our identities and defining our own beauties. Who’s with me?!! Email me your suggestions to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com

Remember a few months back when I showcased MAC’s “Girl About Town”…a beautiful fuchsia lipstick? Per a reader’s question…I found another way to wear it beautifully.

Bright lipsticks can be intimidating, brown ladies. Trust me, I know. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that we can’t wear reds and hot pinks. Oh…so we are only supposed to wear boring golds and browns?

I don’t think so!!!

I find that by pairing Girl About Town with a burgundy plum-ish lip liner (like MAC’s Nightmoth) creates a more wearable lip color.

And because you are wearing such a bright lippie, it is important to keep everything else low-key. I opt for pretty shimmery lids and cheeks…..thank you Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick in Brownie <---don't go looking for that...it's discountined, kids.

So who says Black women can’t wear bright lipsticks?

Have you heard this before? How frustrating is this? Or are you one of those people who THINK this? It’s a new year so step out on a limb and rock a bright colored lippie. I challenge you!

Because gold, brown and burgundy lipsticks on Black women is getting so old! We must do better, ladies. What do you think?

Because gold is old,

Mascara Monday: Lancome Définicils Pro mascara

Happy Monday, family! I’m back. “B…where did you go?” Thanks to Blogger’s “scheduled posts” thingie…..I bet yall didn’t even know I ghost, uh? I spent New Year’s and my birthday in Atlanta and had a BALL! I will be sure to post random pictures/commentary about my trip. Beauty and B’s life. What could be better? I hope you all could smell the sarcasm in that last statement. HA!! Enough ramblin’…let’s bring on the review, yo!

Lancome Définicils Pro mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($24…can’t even lie. That’s a little steep)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What it claims: “Lashes With Superb Definition. For lavishly long, perfectly defined lashes, this best-selling mascara provides the ultimate in shaping and separation. Patented brush coats each lash, from base to tip, for superb definition.”

The truth: WTF! OMG…this is an amazing mascara!!

What I loved about it:
That is works! The definition is really there!

What I didn’t like: That it’s too expensive. :( LOL…I know that’s not a real reason to dislike a product but look…I’m keepin’ it real, fam. And the clump factor was apparent. Uh oh.

Overall: I can’t believe that I am just now testing and reviewing this jewel here on Clumps of Mascara. Lancome Définicils (along with other mascaras from Lancome) has always been one of those mascaras that I “heard” was good but good but never got around to testing. I finally got the opportunity to test it when it came in my Lancome Beauty Box. Wow oh wow! The definition is there like crazy!! After about 2 coats I got amazingly dark and full lashes. The length was right on too. However, I found that after the 2nd coat I was escorted to Clumps City…a place I don’t like to visit when using mascaras. No worries. I found that 2 coats was enough for me. If you feel as if you need MORE coats, view my video to see a little trick that can steer you away from Clump City. As far as durability goes? It’s there! I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging yet it removed with ease. I should have known. Lancome, how you impress thee!!

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

Would I recommend it?: Sho do…that’s the Southern girl in me but in other words, “YES!” It is quite the splurge but definitely worth it as it gives all over eye definition.

Check out what my Twitter fam has to say about this macsara:

@luxetips Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay!

@minordetail I still have to try it!

@reallifecitygirl thats a definite yay! Love the stuff! Been using it since junior high

@FacePaint101 YAY!! It’s one of my fave mascaras

If that ain’t enough confirmation, I don’t know what is? Have you tried this mascara? Or any of Lancome’s mascaras? Tell me what you think!

Random Trip flick:

My best friend and I in a fountain in Atlanta’s Olympic Park. I was trying to look all glamorous but really I was 2 seconds from bustin’ my booty on that ice cold water. Good times, good times….

A new year and a new start,

Mascaras of 2008: 3-rating

We are at the mid-way point of the Mascaras of 2008! Think of 3-rated mascaras as the letter-C mark that you got on that midterm paper you did in high school or college. You remember….the one that you didn’t really put your ALL into. That’s how I feel about these mascaras here. They were just “eh”. Missing something. Lacking “umph”. And the funny thing is…you had high expectations getting a pretty decent grade. But…a C+? Ralphie knows what I’m talkin’ about.

Mascaras with a 3-rating by ClumpsOfMascara

Prescriptives Beyond Long
Bourjois Pump Up the Volume
CoverGirl Lash Exact
Napoleon Perdis Set
Max Factor 2000 Calorie
MAC Fibre Rich
L’Oreal Double Extension Beauty Tubes

I may get a lot of heat for that last one but I just wasn’t a huge fan of L’Oreal’s newest fiber mascara. Have you tried this one? What say you?

Stay beautiful,

Amor de Lacquer: OPI’s Can You Dig It?

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

My Step-Mom has created a little tradition for the ladies of my blended family. Every “day after Christmas” for the past few years my 3 younger sisters and I have been treated to spa pedicures and manicures.

Since I’ve been all about self-nail care, I haven’t had a manicure and pedicure in a salon in months! I’ve gotten so good at doing them once a week at home that I don’t even bother with the spending the money getting them done elsewhere.

It took me forever to select a polish. And then it called my name.

Check out OPI’s Can You Dig It? from their Psychedelic Summer 07 collection.

I’m a little upset that the nail technician filed my nails so short. Ugh! They will take forever to grow back. Katee, I’m feelin’ your pain, sister. The nail technician did 2 coats and topped it off with a basic top coat. Words can not express how much I love this purple! Actually, I have an affinity for purple polishes…

…and that’s not even the half of ‘em.

Back to the topic at hand. Here’s Can You Dig It? sans the flash…

Of course I had to cop it for myself. Head2ToeBeauty.com, my #1 polish e-tailer has it here and I’m getting it for only $4.75. *does the bankhead bounce*.

Loves it! What are you rockin’ on your tips at the moment? Can you get down with purple polishes or not so much? Tell me!!

Stay beautiful,
