Happy Thanksgiving

I hope that you all have a blessed Thanksgiving holiday. I would LOOOOOVE to take this time to list allllll of the things that I’m thankful for, but unfortunately I have family in town and don’t have much time.

Just know that I love the Clumps of Mascara family, blog sisters, affiliates, supporters and readers to death!

This Thanksgiving isn’t as exciting as last years’ at the Macy’s Parade in NYC….

…but I don’t have any complaints. Posts will resume tomorrow.

Enjoy time with loved ones, family. Stay beautiful!

Amor de Lacquer: China Glaze Ruby Pumps

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

If I could hail any nail polish as the “ultimate holiday color”, it would be China Glaze’s Ruby Pumps. I LOVE this color. It is a beautiful dark red but has bright red shimmer. It isn’t your traditional “red” nail polish as I find those to be pretty boring. If I’m going to wear red, I want it to have a little personality. This is it!

Ruby Pumps, however, does not like to be photographed. Just how different she looks with and flash and without flash.

To be honest both colors are OFF and don’t show the true beauty of this polish. I applied 3 coats and topped it off with Poshe fast trying nail polish. I used my Konad m36 for the ring finger.

Ruby Pumps-FLASH

Ruby Pumps-NO FLASH

this is probably the closest that
Ruby Pumps looks in real life.

My cuticles are havin’ some issues these days no matter how many times (at least 4) a day I moisturize them. :( No worries…they’ll be up to par sooner rather than later. You can purchase Ruby Pumps at your local Sally Beauty Supply store ($6.00) or at my favorite e-tailer: Head2ToeBeauty for only $2.99!

Until next time….stay beautiful..oh and any time you see the Honey Pot banner, that means Clumps of Mascara is having a giveaway!

Don’t forget to dip your hand in the honey pot for a chance to win a Mary Kay Ultimate mascara…a mascara that I am sending high praises to! View this post for details……and of course I’ll ship to other countries! Contest ends on Monday, December 1.

Mascara Monday: Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara and giveaway!

It’s Monday! Yes again. I know, I know. I’m groaning too. Only one thing can make dreadful Monday mornings a little better. If you said, “Payday!” I’m with you! So okay….there are TWO things that can make Monday mornings better. Yay to Mascara Mondays! I do my best to review and tell you about the most popular, unhead of, a bit pricey and mad cheap mascaras from all brands. I do not discriminate….only appreciate!

When it comes to mascaras I would have NEVER considered Mary Kay. Mary Kay for skincare? Absolutely. Mascaras? Not so much. Is there a reason why you don’t hear much about their mascaras or are they silent forces to be reckoned with? Hmmm….

Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($16 from marykay.com or your favorite MK consultant) )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Uhhh, I didn’t see any claims so I guess my expectations shouldn’t be that high. LOL!”

The truth: A little pricey but this one may be a diamond in the rough!

What I loved about it: It doesn’t clump! Each time I wear this mascara, I can get up to 4 coats without getting a ANY clumps. That’s amazing!

What I didn’t like: I’m just a picky wand chick. I’m come to realize it. A wand can make or break a mascara in terms of application and I did have some challenges with this one.

The bristles aren’t defined enough for me. Definition=better control. Better control=better application. Better application=amazing lashes!

Overall: I don’t know why, but I am super shocked at how well this mascara performs. I mean….who have thunk! I am super impressed with how you can “build it up”. Most mascaras only allow a good 2 coats before it begins to clump. Which, when you think about it, makes sense. To find out that I didn’t get ANY clumps nor do I get that “too much mascara” look with Mary Kay’s Ultimate, well…I was just stunned. I went so far as to do a 4th coat and nope…still no clumps. Very impressive! I found this to be a great volumizing mascara and it’s pretty decent as far as lengthening goes too. It is your everyday mascara. This would be perfect for traveling as it doesn’t flake and lasts pretty much ALL day with easy removal. Go Mary Kay!! I know the “eye ball” pictures are a little scary but I just wanted to show the great volume and length the Ultimate gave me!

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

Would I recommend it: I would. Is it a must have? Hmm…I wouldn’t say that but it is a GOOD mascara from a company that many of us have grown to love over the years.

…..because I loved this mascara so much I decided to give one away! That’s right…one lucky reader will win Mary Kay Ultimate mascara by simply leaving a comment and telling me your favorite Mary Kay product AND your name and email address. You have until the next Mascara Monday (Mon, December 1) to get those entries in. Get to commenting…I want you to win!

….feeling a little better about Monday now? I certainly hope so! Stay beautiful.

FOTD Friday: Dior Chic Palette

It’s Friday, it’s Friday, it’s Friday…yeah yeah, it’s Friday, it’s Friday..*does the Bankhead bounce*

“B…seriously, what is the Bankhead Bounce?
And WHY are you always doing it?”

I just know someone out there is thinking this….

I know..I’m ALWAYS doing that dance, uh? As an 80’s babies who grew up in the 90’s, this song was a huge hit in my suburban hood. Not that I was allowed to listen to rap music….I had friends though. And a mad cool babysitter who would bust this song and do the dance. I enjoyed it because it was only dance that didn’t require any feet movements because…..um, I can’t dance. Shoulder poppin’? I can do that!

And that, boys and girls is why I love the Bankhead Bounce ’til this day.

Here’s a video for reference….if you (like me) are allergic to rap music videos, be careful with this one..hehe, you were warned.

On to the look….every once in awhile, I feel like I need to treat myself. I mean, why not? I’m fairly responsible. I pay my bills on time, go to work on time (mostly) and don’t go around plotting ways to destroy the lives of others. So why not TREAT myself?

Check out Dior’s Chic Palette Eye

…Sephora’s photo is so much prettier than mine. I will say that this little palette is a bit pricey. $45?! Yeah…that’s a stretch. But it didn’t hurt my wallet too much as I haven’t purchased make-up in quite a while…except a mascaras and a few (hehe, dozen) polishes.

Here’s how Sephora describes the colors:

Shades include:
- Shimmering bronze
- Ivory sheen
- Brownish green sheen
- Light mauve gray sheen
- Plum sheen
- Shimmering grayish black

I would say that they are pretty accurate and extremely wearable. This is my first time dabbling in Dior’s shadows and I’m impressed. I love how the colors are sheer yet build-able. I’m learning to have an appreciation for colors that can go on lightly and instantly look “intense” with a little more application.

The look..

EYES:
Plum sheen (inner lid)
Shimmering bronze (outer-V)
Shimmering grayish black (crease)
Clinique’s Almost Peach e/s (highlight)
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Clinique Brush-On Cream liner in Black
_____ mascara (I’m reviewing it on Monday)

CHEEKS:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
NARS Crazed ( I think I forgot that a little goes a loooong way, hehe)

LIPS:
NARS Afghan Red lipstick
NYC gloss…can’t tell b/c the color rubbed off but it is beautiful.

Why does oatmeal cook TOO fast? Seriously….mine was burning after 3 minutes. WTF?

Lemme get out of here before I’m late to work.

Have a wonderful weekend, family!! And if anyone is in Orlando for the FAMU vs. BCC Florida Classic, let me know!

Amor de Lacquer Debut!

Welcome to the inaugural post from the Amor de Lacquer series! Do yall like that name? It took me ages to come up with something witty, catchy and memorable. Please visit the poll on the left hand side to tell me what you think about this series. I’d greatly appreciate it!

Amor de Lacquer will discuss any and everything under the nail umbrella…and let me tell you, that encompasses a lot. We can talk about upcoming collections, general nail care, what not to wear (neon green polish at an interview? Uhhh…) and even nail news. Like…..fish pedicures and men rockin’ nail polish. Yes, despite what you may think or have heard, nail polish is HUGE. And I’ve got a list of bloggers around the world who would co-sign to that statement.

“But B….I don’t even wear nail polish.”

“I’m a chronic nail biter.”

“Colorful tips and designs are so 8th grade.”

Yeah…I’ve heard it all. No matter your position on nail polish/care, I think you will find some interest in this series and enourage you to send me an email any time you have an idea or suggestion.

So what do you think?

An excited new venture for Clumps of Mascara?
A waste of time?
Don’t care either way?

An Amor de Lacquer post will never be complete without a NOTD (nail of the day). Check out a sloppy application of Zoya’s Kalista from their winter Flourish collection.

Zoya describes this color as “Metallic mahogany brown with gilded sparkle highlights” (source). I would say that’s a pretty accurate description. I only needed two coats and topped it off with Poshe fast drying nail polish.

I used Konad m36 plate for the ring fingers.

You can cop Zoya’s Kalista for $6 at zoya.com. Yes, they are only sold online. And don’t get to gripping. The customer service and shipping is amazingly FAST! And this is coming from a chick who hates ordering online.

Stay tuned….and stay beautiful!

Beauty Review: Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin’s Body Butter and Lotion

Yay to finally getting the chance to review products from a line that I’ve been eye-ing for quite some time. In this post I discussed Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin line and many of you were excited about it! I, too, get excited about brands made specifically for brown skin beauties….that’s a rarity, you know.

“So, B….tell me a little bit about this brand.”

So glad you asked!

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin is a unique collection of cleansers, toners and moisturizers designed to meet the special needs of skin of color. This includes a wide range of women of heritages including Asian, Latin, Middle Eastern and African-American, among many others. This over-the-counter collection was designed specifically to target a variety of brown skin specific issues such as sensitive skin, easily irritated reactive skin, blemishes, uneven skin tone and most importantly, hyperpigmentation –top concern for brown skin. (source)

My younger sister, Courtney, is a huge fan of the Bright & Healthy line: these products , formulated with Grape seed, Green Tea, Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel and Glycerin is for normal, dry or sensitive brown skin. There is also the Bright & Clear for acne prone skin and the Bright & Even for dull mature or hyperpigmenting skin.

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin has recently (as of August 2008) launched their Body Collection and it is available exclusively at Sephora and Sephora.com.

Allow me to introduce to you the Skin-Evening Body Butter and Body Lotion:

Aside from smelling heavenly because of the vanilla citrus infusions, these babies are more than your average ash-bustin’ lotions. Combined, their ingredients do everything from repairing pigmented areas to locking in moisture for 24 hours to even inhibiting melanin formation so skin tone appears more even.

All of that in a body product? Yes ma’am…..and sir. I would imagine that you would have to use these products for a few months to see visible results, and let me assure you….that isn’t difficult at all. I LOVE the way they smell.

Both the lotion (left) and body butter (right) feel divine on the skin.

The butter, I find is great after a bath and before bed. It is wonderful for keeping the ash at bay during these harsh winter months. <--okay, not so harsh for this Floridian, but hey---I'm trying to relate with you snow birds. :) I can't get over the smell! It is rather intoxicating. Imagine a vanilla bean, orange peel and lime swimming together in a creamy butter pool. And it's a long lasting, but no over-powering scent. Look how "illuminated" my skin looks (click pic to enlarge).
The lotion and body butter contain teeny tiny glitter golden glitter stuffs that give a certain “glow” to my skin. Calm down…it’s not at all super noticeable.

I’m sold! The Skin Evening Body Butter retails for $27 (6.7 oz) and Body Lotion at $25 (8.5 oz). I can’t even pretend that those prices aren’t expensive. But consider how often you need to purchase lotion. I am almost positive that I can get a good 3 months out of these babies here. And besides, should you really put a price on healthy and beautiful skin?

I think not!

What do you think? Would you purchase these lotions? Or buy them for the pretty brown skinned lady in your life?

To my Brown, Black, Indian, Latina, and Asian fam…check out BrownSkin.net. I have had it bookmarked for months and it has been instrumental in keeping me cognizant about all things brown skin.

Stay beautiful!!

Tagged, mon!

I got tagged by one of my lovely blog sisters, Funky Blak Chik. I love this chick…she keeps me rollin’ over at Twitter and has a fab blog. Thanks for the tag, fam!

FOTD Friday: Clinique’s Holiday GWP

I’ve always been a Clinique skincare girl. But since getting into make-up (like a year ago, ha!) I never really looked twice at them for pretty lipsticks, eyeshadows and blushes. I managed to scoop up a few of their eye pencils and maybe even a gloss here or there but I never had any crazy indulgences. It wasn’t until I heard about Nordstrom’s Trina Turk gift with purchase that made me want to scratch that Clinique itch a little more. I literally fleewww to Nordie’s here in Orlando.

Spend $25 and look at all of the fabulousness you get:

Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser (1.7 oz.)
Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift Firming Cream (0.5 oz.)
Lash Doubling Mascara (0.14 oz.)
Long Last Lipstick in Blush Coral
Bamboo Pink glosswear
Color Surge eye shadow/duo
silver lipstick case

…..how I ended up with that extra lipstick, I don’t know. But you don’t hear me complaining!

What did I purchase to snag those goodies?

Quickliner for Eyes in Navy ($14.50)
Long Last glosswear in Mystic ($14.50)

The best lipgloss in the market, in my opinion? Clinique’s glosswear! Not lyin’. This is actually my third one and I LOVE the staying power of these babies here.

I know that many women of color may think that Clinique’s shadows and blushes are not brown girl friendly. I, too, thought the same thing for awhile so I thought I’d do a FOTD using all Clinique products to convince some of you, pretty people otherwise.

I decided to do a look using these shadows and blush.

I also used some of my other favorite Clinique products:

EYES:

Colour Surge eye shadow (lid)
Almost Peach eye shadow (as a highlight. My FAVORITE highlight of all time!)
Bewitched eye shadow (to deepen crease)
Brush-On Cream liner in Black
Quick Liner pencil in Navy
Lash Doubling mascara (this is a niiiice mascara, I approve!)

LIPS:
Clinique Twilight Nude lipstick
Clinique Mystic long last glosswear

…I went a little heavy on the blush so that it would show up on the camera. I am loooving this smooth matte pink.

Serious

Silly

…I was trying to hide my bra strap from the camera but got it on the other side. I am a mess, people.

So that’s that….I found that Clinique’s shadows were extremely workable. Were they pigmented? Absolutely! Especially that frosty gold. I think it works well on the brown skin. What say you, beautiful people?

If there has ever been a time that you wanted to play around with Clinique’s…now is the time! Head on over to your nearest Nordstrom’s stat!

Have a beautiful weekend!
