Beauty Bee-haviors: Is your lipstick toxic?

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world and beyond.

I got this discussion idea from a lovely reader named Paula. Thanks darlin‘!!

She forwarded me THIS link. tells you all about what’s in your cosmetics and how some of things we are using our hazardous to our well-beings. It’s a little scary to say the least. But we need to be informed.

Spend some time browsing and then share your thoughts here.

What if you found out that your favorite lipstick, blush, perfume, shampoo or nail polish contained toxic ingredients. I mean….this is your all-time FAVORITE beauty product. Would you continue to use it? Or trash it for the sake of your health?

The sad reality is that most of the cosmetics on the market are un-safe. So what’s a gal to do? I do have a great deal of skincare/haircare products that are all-natural and safe but most if not ALL of my cosmetics contain some “not so good” additives.

What should we do? Is this something you ever think about?

Mascara Monday: blinc Kiss Me mascara

Greetings family! I hope that you all had wonderful weekends. I know the big talk was the Oscars but I didn’t even watch it. I’ve never been big on watching award shows. Can you believe that? But did any one catch it and want to update me on who had the best dress or make-up? Whatcha think?

Anywhoovers this mascara was requested a while back. I’ve heard many raves about it. But does it live up to those claims and raves? Let’s see…

Blinc Kiss Me mascara

Price: 4 out of 5 (I got it for $24 from Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5
What it claims:Blinc Kiss Me Mascara is the original tube-technology mascara. It’s invented to form tiny water-resistant “tubes” around your lashes for maximum amplification and hold, rather than painting them like conventional mascaras. Once applied, the tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump, or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes.” (source)

The truth:
I expected it to do a little more.

What I loved about it:
The wand is perfect for those with smaller eyes and lashes.

What I didn’t like:
I needed a little more “Umph“. I mean it wasn’t bad but after applying it, I looked and the mirror and thought, “That’s it?”

Overall: I took on a different perspective about this mascara when I was sharing my thoughts about it with the lady who worked in Sephora. Our conversation went something like this:

ME: “What do you think of Blinc’s Kiss Me mascara. I have been reviewing it for a while and it just doesn’t seem to impress me. What are your thoughts?”

Sephora Lady: “Kiss Me definitely isn’t one of the most dramatic mascaras out there but it works beautifully on Asian ladies and other women with smaller eyes.”

ME:Ohhh okay. That makes sense. I found that I had to keep applying and applying to even get a ‘decent’ amount of volume and length.”

Sephora Lady: “Right…it probably isn ‘t for you if you desire a LOT of volume and length. What’s great about it is that it is a rich black mascara. It looks very natural but gives a certain pop to your eyes too.”

I pretty much learned a lot more from this mascara and had a greater appreciation for it by talking with the Sephora Lady than from my own experiences using it. This mascara brought me back to one important lesson in mascara reviewing: Everyone is looking for something different. While I am desirous of long and full lashes, some ladies just want a little ‘somethinsomethin‘.

In which case, Kiss Me would work. Oh! I almost forgot to mention….this is a fiber mascara, so you know what that means right? To take it off, all you have to do is wet your fingers with warm water and then gently remove it. Easy! This is probably one of my favorite perks of fiber mascaras. Well, Blinc doesn’t call them “fibers”….they refer to them as “tubes”….hence their motto “Tube your lashes”.

It looks like this!

Pretty groovy (or scary), uh?

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I would. I don’t think it’s for me but I know that it would work beautifully on other women out there….especially those with smaller lashes.

Have you tried this mascara? A fan? Or not so much?

Have a wonderful Monday!

Honey Pot Giveaway Reminder: Garfield’s Stash

Garfield has asked me to remind you all to enter his contest. He and I both are enjoying reading the entries. I can’t remember who wrote it but the reader that said she put her Barbie dolls on the ceiling fan and then flew them off and called it “Circus Barbies” had me rollin’.

And Garfield practically choked up a hairball laughing at the reader who posted the story about her sister painting her in red fingernail polish.

Ohhh, the memories.

Don’t forget to enter the contest HERE for your chance to snag a bundle of newbie goodies.

And if you have already submitted, head on back to read some of the childhood memories.

FOTD Friday: Throwback Edition

It’s Friday! Got any weekend plans? I am going to link up with one of my best darlings from undergrad and then on Sunday some of us beauty bloggers in the Tampa/Orlando area will hook up and head out to MAC Pro and talk beauty. If there are any readers and other bloggers out there that would like to link up with us, please let me know!

This past week my face has been attacking me like crazy. I mean, pimple galore! For 3 months I will be fine. But for a month and half, I will have to endure crazy acne spells. *tears* I didn’t get around to doing a FOTD this week simply because I haven’t been wearing any make-up as to give my skin a break. This is essential to do every now and then.

I decided to do a throwback edition of FOTD Friday. How crazy is it that my hair is different in EACH picture? And can you see the weight loss from the last picture when comparing it to the first?

Yall better say, “yes”.

Just jivin’, fam!

No really, can you? LOL!

I would love to know yours.

Fashion Week Fabulousness Spring ’09

Well, it’s that time again, ladies and gents.

Fashion Week has reared its oh so beautiful head in New York City. Yours truly is not in attendance as I have planned one too many trips so close together this season and FORGOT NYFW. No worries. I hope to be there for the showing of the Spring 2010 collections.

Spring 2010. That sound so far away doesn’t it?

Too bad it’s not. Wowsers!

Moving on…I just had to share with you all what one of my favorite cosmetic companies is doing at Fashion Week. I have been in love with NARS for quite some time. Never mind that only own a few products. Never mind that the products are a little too expensive for me. I still and will always love Mr. Francois Nars for his creation of NARS, the company.

Now the following is a little outside of the “make-up newbie’s” world but it is fascinating.

SHOW: Marc Jacobs

LEAD ARTIST: François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics

TREND: Night clubbing – theatrical makeup – strong eyes, porcelain skin

Inspiration: The Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 collection paid homage to the New York night club scene of the 1970s and ‘80s. Drawing inspiration from these decades and the works of Sprouse, St. Laurent, and Halston, François Nars took into consideration each model’s individual beauty before creating a separate edgy look, reminiscent of the past but still very modern. “We are doing quite an eclectic look,” he said. The inspiration for diversity came from Nars’ book XRAY. “[Marc] wanted to keep that feeling,” said Nars, “the variety of looks, the same way we do the campaigns for NARS.” Overall, it was important that each girl look beautiful, even with strong theatrical looks. Much like the fashion, Nars emphasized having fun with makeup for the coming year, despite the times we live in- “It’s a good antidote.”

Look: Focusing on an edgy, night clubbing look, strong eyes and bold color were a major theme. Black shadow laid the foundation for creating the dramatic eye, to which the artists added cobalt blues, deep greens, bright purples, reds, fuchsias, and glitter. “There is a wide variety of color,” said Nars, “it’s whatever looks good on the girl.” For many of the models, porcelain skin was a key component, allowing the black eyes and bright colors to pop. “You want to play with makeup,” says Nars, “makeup is a great accessory – that is the message.”

Look at all of the products used:

Ay, Mr. Nars….can I just get one of those, player?

….the master working on a beautiful model. I love the work he did on her cheekbones!

The un-blended line on the lip is runway fierce! Okay kids…shadow up to the brow is okay ONLY in these kind of instances. Beautiful!

….can I just say that I am loving the diversity of the ladies?

Okay, I don’t know where to start. Lady to the left….I mean, the PERFECT blue lids. Paired with a pale lip. Gorgeous. Lady to the right…what an ingenious decision on Mr. Nars behalf to line her brows with red shadow. And her browbone highlight as a fire-y red color? I can dig it.

This is what make-up art is all about, kids. It’s a waaay out of my league but I can’t help but be in awe.

Beauty Review: MAC’s Tinted Lip Conditioner in Popster

Introducing product #3 that I purchased from the MAC Hello Kitty collection.

I justified purchasing this for several reasons; one being that I simply adore MAC’s lip conditioners and two because I could re-use that darling Hello Kitty case over and over again.

But seriously, I love MAC’s lip conditioners. I have only purchased one. And that means something…your $14.50 will last a LEAST a year. So yes, I know that almost $15 on a balm is a stretch but it will really last you some time. I use my religiously…every day and every night following my skincare regimes. That’s right conditioning your lips is just as important as taking care of your skin.

But yall knew that right?

I figured MAC’s Tinted lip conditioner in Popster would be the best of both world’s. The wonderful conditioning formula that I’m used to with a nice subtle flush of color on the lips.

The packaging is indeed quite darling. A friend of mine goes, “Wow B…..aren’t you too old for Hello Kitty products?” I didn’t jump on him, yall. He clearly doesn’t understand. Plus what am I? 79? Geez.

MAC defines Popster as “lively coral pink”. I guess that’s pretty accurate. What do you think?

At first glance, the darker skinned woman of color may think this color is far too intimidating for her brown skin, but it’s not. This lip conditioner is rather sheer but build-able at the same time. That means if you want to go subtle at work you can do that. If you are headed to Happy Hour later, you apply a little more and BAM….you’ve got a bright lip. Perfect!

How it looks on me?

Subtle. Just like how I like it for work. When I am running errands and want a little more “pop” I line my lips with my beloved MAC Nightmoth lip liner and I am good to go. And I wasn’t trying to be cute with the finger on my chin. I actually have a horrific pimple there and didn’t want to scare yall.

Popster is currently sold out on the MAC website. I’m not lying….see HERE. I know….”they trippin'” as I would say. Check your local MAC stores or counters to see if they are still available.

Have you ever tried MAC’s lip conditioners?

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!!
