Masara Monday: Mascara Tips and Updates

Happy Monday!!!

Uhh…*looks around* No, your browser uploaded correctly. You aren’t seeing things….or lack of things. I have no mascara to review this Mascara Monday. I know, I know. I gave the lashes a break and didn’t wear any make-up last week. Not even my staple black eyeliner.

But no worries, I have some pretty fabulous tips for yall. I first found these at one of my favorite beauty blogs: Lipstick Graffiti. Check ’em out, mon.
Tip #1: How to use a lash comb
Tip #2: Try a clean mascara wand.
Tip #3: Don’t shy away from colored mascara.
Tip #4: When applying mascara, wiggle the wand at the base of the lashes.
Tip #5: Thin, short brushes are best.
Tip #6: Give a few coats to the edges by blinking.
Tip #7: Powder under the eye before applying mascara.
Tip #8: Use an eyelash curler
Tip #9: Zig-zag the wand.
Tip #10: For a dramatic look, apply mascara only to the upper lashes.
Tip #11: Use a mascara primer.
Tip #12: Want that 2nd coat?
Tip #13: Do NOT pump wand in and out of the tube.
Tip #14: Another smudge-proof tip — bend the wand.
Tip #15: Wait five seconds before blinking.

What’s up with #12? LOL, that is not a tip. Ha! But for the most part I agree with all of them. Especially that #5. Any tips you would like to share? Disagree with the list? Let me knowww!

FOTD Friday: Lilacs

It’s Friiiiiday! And I’m off to Atlanta, shawty. Yes, your Head Newb is quit excited but I couldn’t leave without droppin’ this week’s FOTD Friday. What was my inspiration?

Well, first….tell me what these 3 beautiful ladies have in common:

If you guessed “purples on the lids” then shoot me an email because I will be mailing you a gold star! I reallllllly don’t like the color purple. Dark and deep royal purple, I can deal with. But lavenders pretty much make me want want to throw up. Excuse the dramatics. But it is that serious. My Mommy, the herbalist’s, favorite color is purple and I’m thinking I saw an over-abundance of it as a kid….hence why I loathe it tremendously. But I tried a little somethin’ somethin’. Here’s what I used:

Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance primer
Stila’s Orchid e/s duo (light purple=inner darker purple=outer)
MAC’s Satellite Dreams e/s (crease)
Clinique’s Almost peach e/s (highlight)
Stila’s Major Lash mascara
Clinique’s Eggplant liner
Maybelline’s Unstoppable Eyeliner

Stila’s Berry Flash Color Push-up
Bobbi Brown’s Brownie Shimmerbrick

CoverGirl AmazeMint in Plum Crazy (loves it!)

Here’s what I came up with…

LOL @ the brows….again. Those jokas are gettin’
threaded today. Final-freakin’-ly!

That China Glaze “Coconut Kiss” polish is more of
the color purple I prefer.

I’m lookin’ too happy, uh? HA! And my cheeks are crazy shiny. The verdict: still not diggin’ lighter purples on the lids much. But I feel confident knowing that darker skinned women CAN wear them beautifully. But would I on a regular? Naaaaaa.

Tell me what you think about light purples in general? A fan? A loather? Never tried?

Thank you soooo much for your support with my DentaBurst feature. It’s one thing for yall to stroll though to support me on Clumps but to see you show me love on other sites is just…a phenomenal feeling. *tears*

Don’t forget! My Stila lipstick contest is still running until Wednesday. Snap to it, chicas! And have a wonderful weekend!!!

Stila’s Rock the Vote Red and contest!

Hey lovely folx. Beauty bloggers everywhere have been buzzing about Stila’s “Rock the Vote Red”. I’m going to go ahead and assume that you beautiful people are registered to vote. So why not show support for your favorite candidate by rockin’ a lovely red lippie?

I’m not going to pretend that I’m super patriotic but I know many women and African Americans have died so that I can vote. I think it’s great that a cosmetic company like Stila is combining politics and beauty for a wonderful cause.

Not familiar with Stila’s lipsticks? Check me out in the beautifully sheer color “Natalie”

And the oh la la “Dominique”

Stila’s lippies aren’t too drying either so I’m definitely getting that “Rock the Vote Red” lipstick as soon as the make-up probation is lifted. And don’t even get me started on the “But Black can’t wear red lipsticks” bit. We alllll know that isn’t true, chicas so head on over to Stila’s website to cop your powerful red lipstick.

But I shouldn’t be the the only one glorifying Stila’s lipsticks. I am giving away “Ariel” and “Michaela”. How to snag them? Tell me your reason for why you think voting is so important. The best two answers to make me laugh, go “hmm” or bring me close to tears WIN! You can leave your answers in the comment or you can email me at PLEASE LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.

Of course if you’ve won a contest in the last 6 months, you aren’t eligible. But I still want to hear your thoughts! Contest ends Wednesday, August 6, 2008 and winners will be announced soon after. Hop to it, ladies!

Mascara Monday: Bourjois Pump Up the Volume Mascara

Hi pretty people. It’s another Monday which means another mascara review, so let’s go ahead and get started shall weeeee?

Bourjois Pump up the Volume Mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($14.50)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5

Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “A truly uplifting experience, rain or shine. This silicone rich formula pumps up your lashes in any weather, instantly volumizing and uplifting. While a combination of microbeads with carnuba wax act as a natural raincoat for your lashes. The double-fiber brush thickens right to the tips for fuller, darker looking lashes that never get left out in the rain.”

The truth: It is waterproof. I took a shower with this mascara on and it didn’t run whatsoever. But as far as the volume…

What I loved about it: This is my first Bourjois Cosmetics purchase (reader requested) and although I’m not terribly impressed with the mascara, my eyes were buggin’ out from the other beautiful products they have. The next time you are in a Sephora or Ulta, you MUST check them out. But onto the mascara….wellll, I love the whole “natural raincoat” explanation. It is in fact, true. You can literally go swimming with this mascara and it will hold up. So that’s great! I also love love looooove the skinny brush.

What I didn’t like: I didn’t receive THAT much volume from this mascara. I mean, it was just ohhhhkaaaay. What really gave me MORE volume was the primer that I used. I tried using it with other mascaras and it was still just, “eh”. I imagine this mascara would be great for those who already have long and full lashes and just want to take them a step up.

Would I purchase again?: No, I don’t think so. But I’m open to trying more mascaras from Bourjois Cosmetics considering they have a lot to choose from.

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it? Does anyone know how to say “bourjois” correctly. If you’ve sent me an email requesting a particular mascara to review, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have a looong list. Keep sendin’ me reviews at

FOTD Friday: Inspirations

Yaaaay, it’s Friday. When I tell ya this week was draggin’, I ain’t lyin’. I really look forward to FOTD Fridays because I get to be creative and play around with looks I would not otherwise do throughout the work week.

And I love the collabos so if you have requests or want to try to “mimic” similar looks like Jamila and I did last week, let’s go for it!

Because I made the mistake and straightened my otherwise kinky hair 2 months ago, I have been dealing with a half straight and half nappy fro. Not a good look. So I’ve been rockin’ headwraps for close to 2 months now. Which I don’t mind. Gives my hair a rest and adds a little “funk” to my overall look. I have been wearing this African printed scarf almost everyday this week because I absolutely adore it!! This FOTD comes from the beautiful colors of my scarf.

I was rushing to work on this particular day (what else is new?) so don’t mind the “in car” photo shoot. Ha!

Guess what I had for breakfast?

Oatmeal! You know you want some, so don’t act like that. Eating oatmeal every day is good for you.

I’m not going to act like I know what that is on the side of my face. LOL! And I was going to do some Photoshop work to it but yall know I don’t care…..hehe.

Here’s what I used:

Too Faced’s Creme Brulee blush duo

Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance primer
MAC Firespot e/s
MAC Cranberry e/s
MAC Carbon e/s
Clinique Almost Peach e/s
Maybelline black eyeliner
Bourjois Volume mascara

MAC Electro
MAC Pink Grapefruit

By noon I had that “It’s time to go home” look…

Very fall , no? And check out the pimple I had yesterday…

It’s gone already!! Murad’s Spot Treatment is wonderful! Who else rocks oranges on the lid? Anyone, anyone? And what’s goin’ on this weekend? I know Amina from Coup de Cour is havin’ a biiiiiiiiirthday!!! It is straight bland here in Central Florida. Somebody invite me to a party in your city. I’ll fly up. *looks at wallet* Uhhh, I’ll be there in spirit. I’m sure I’ll find something to do. Have a great and beautiful Friday!!!!!

Brown and Blushin’ Series: Bronzers!

Time for another edition of Brown and Blushin’. I knowww, it’s been awhile since we’ve visisted this series, uh? Please excuse the delay. But this time around I have some real goodies for you in the “bronzer” department.

“What is a bronzer for anyway?”

Can yall believe I asked this question less than a year ago? Yes…your head newbie in charge was not familiar with bronzers. Don’t cyber-grill me…I’m learning, okay? And I know there are a few of you pretty people out there who don’t even own bronzers.

Neither did I until 3 months. HA!

Now I’m hooked. Bronzers are beautiful on brown skin. It gives us that “sun kissed” look. When lightly applied on the cheeks, it can bring out the cheekbones. When swiped under the brow, it can act as a pretty highlighter. When dapped on the apples of the cheeks, it provides just enough shimmer to make your pretty cheeks radiate with every smile.

I really love bronzers. Today I’m going to feature my 3 favorite (ha, and only) bronzers.

Are yall diggin’ my pretty set up? I try, I try.

So, I’ve put our 3 bronzers in categories.

For my sistas on a budget we have Tanfastic Bronzer by CoverGirl
For my girls who have a little extra pocket change we have Cargo’s Bronzer in Medium
…and for my ballin’ chicas (um, not me) we have Bobbi Brown’s Shimmbrick Compact in Bronze

CoverGirl’s Tanfastic Bronzer

For only $5.99, you have to be in love with this CoverGirl bronzer. It is highly pigmented so you won’t need much to achieve a nice but subtle glow. In fact, because it is so pigmented it is wonderful as an eyeshadow or brow bone color. I’m not gonna front–the brush uhh….the brush sucks. It is a a bit too stiff for initial application for me. But will it do the job for an on the go touch-up? Absolutely!

Cargo Cosmetic’s Bronzer-Medium

So maybe you got a little raise or Mommy dropped some funds in your account (dang, I miss those college years) and you want to splurge for the moment. Let me introduce you to this baby. I have the mini version but for $25 you can cop the award winning Cargo Cosmetic bronzer. Mad love to my sis, Amina at Coup de Coeur who got me hip to this beautiful tin canned wonder. The texture is so soft that it almost feels like “cream”. It isn’t as pigmented as CoverGirl’s so to get it show up you may have to apply a few swipes. It is absolutely radiating on my brown brown skin. And with the dose of Vitamin E this bronzer provides, I’m not only lookin’ good but keeping my skin healthy.

Bobbi Brown’s Shimmerbrick in Bronze

I’m not going to act like I can’t put some gas in my car, feed myself for a week or save for my upcoming travels. For $36, I could do one of the above. But if I “had it like that”, I would buy every single one of Bobbi Brown’s Shimmerbricks. They are just so dern pretty to look at. You can’t deny it….lemme bring the picture back.

Ohmiiiiigoodness. I mean look at that. Aside from this little brick going beautiful on the cheeks, it can also act as eyeshadows. You’ve got a lid color, crease color and a highlight right there in one palette. I don’t even travel with eyeshadows. I just take my Shimmerbrick and call it a day. I swear this thing has magic powers.

How do you apply it?

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way. I swipe my brush right down the middle and apply on the cheeks. It is divine.

I took some pictures of swatches but they pretty much all look the same because of the lighting. But a swatch of CoverGirl’s Tanfastic (that name is killing me, lol) on my inner arm should show you how pretty bronzers are…

This article at Black Women’s Web tells you a little bit more about bronzers.

So tell me….do you wear bronzers? Any recommendations? Your favorite? Your struggles? And suggestions for me? Shout out your favorite bronzer!

Mascara Monday: Too Faced Lash Injection

Ohmigoodness….the weekend seriously flies by for me. I really don’t understand. Grrr! Yes, I have the Monday Morning blues but despite that I have brought you our Mascara Monday. This series is where we highlight and review mascaras in attempts to find the world’s BEST mascara. Which may or may not exist. Either way, I love experimenting. I pushed this mascara up because of the overwhelming requests I got. Was it worth the hype?

Too Faced Lash Injection

Price: 2 out of 5 ($19.50….dang! They do have a smaller version for $8.50)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5

Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Get the look of lash extensions without the cost or commitment. Our 3D lash coating technology is so effective fake lashes will be a thing of the past.”

The truth: can’t compare it to any other mascara…which is a good thing!

What I loved about it: It did a really good job at giving my lashes volume. The first time I used it I didn’t achieve any spectacular lashes so I tried again with my eye lash curler and a mascara primer and saw great results! The volume factor is insane! This mascara also has a very pleasant smell. Can’t quite put my finger on what it is but I’m lovin’ it. I also love the way that it comes off; similar to that Imju Fiberwig! Wet your fingertips, massage your eyelashes and…..viola! It comes off. So much easier than traditional mascara. Loves it!

What I didn’t like: I hate those big brushes with undefined bristles. It literally drives me nuts! I think they contribute the the clumps that mascara can often give you. Smaller brushes means smaller bristles which means less product on the wand. Less product means better distribution and less clumps. Big brushes=death. Seriouslyyyyy. So yes, I did experience some clumping. It also didn’t last long for me. My lashes seemed to be “weighed down” towards the end of the day. I like mascaras that last alllllll for hours since I don’t re-apply throughout the day.

Would I purchase again?: Probably. More than likely I would purchase the smaller tube and apply it over my current HG mascara. I recommend this mascara for those looking for crazy volume. And if you already have length to your natural lashes….you will love Too Faced Lash Injection!

Too Faced Lash Injection video review

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it? Don’t those clumps drive you insaaaane? If you’ve sent me an email requesting a particular mascara to review, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have a looong list. Keep sendin’ me reviews at

And congrats to my winners for the Palmer’s Lip Butters!! The correct answer is: Miami, Florida. Stay tuned for upcoming contests and giveaways. Thanks to all of those who participated!

FOTD Friday: Fresh Green Mix (pic heavy!)

Ohhh la laaaa, thanks Jaimie for my new FOTD Friday banner. It is faaaab! FOTD Friday is all about creativity, comparing dupes and stepping outside of the box when it comes to color. Or sometimes we explore the beauty of natural looks. Today’s FOTD was inspired by reader Jamila who sent me her thoughts on MAC’s Fresh Green Mix Mineralized eyeshadow from the ElectroFlash collection.

I have seen these beauties in person but haven’t been compelled to buy anything since I am on this serious “it can be duped” phase. But Jamila may change my mind. I tried to duplicate her beautiful FOTD. She used (all MAC unless otherwise noted):

Pharaoh PP as base.
Fresh Green Mix on lid, the darker side in the crease and outer 1/3
Climate Blue (just a bit) in the crease and outer 1/3
Maybelline Dream Mousse shadow in Vanilla Veil to highlight.
MAC liquidlast in Electrolady to line (top and bottom)
Violet Pigment on top of Elctrolady

My Foundation and blush are some frankens that I put together.

NYX Black Label Lipstick Diva with Korres Pomegranate Lip butter over it.

Beautiful uh? So here is the quad that I used…

Ohh….and here’s the pobre Eyepopping eyeshadow in the jacked up shadows palettes.

And then the diagram….

And then the look…

Looks like I went a little above my crease on the left eye. Urrgghhh, Clumps of Mascara strikes again. Hehehe…

I used (all MAC unless otherwise noted):
Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer
Milani Garden Mist eyeshadow
True Chartreuse pigment
Clinique’s Almost Peach (highlight…love this color!)
Entremauve pigment (for purple lining)–forgot to add it on my waterline.

….that lippie is by NYC but the name rubbed off. I adore that color!

So how did I do? I think my look is a little more vibrant than J’s. But I’m thinking it’s because I used all of my shadows and pigments wet. I still think there are some dimensions to that Fresh Water Mix mineralized shadow that I would like to explore. Jamila has been nice enough to provide some swatch comparisons for us. Yaaaay! Check them out here.

Anyone else own it? Any must haves that you think I should take a look at in the Electro Flash collection?

It’s Friiiiiiiiday!!! I hope that yall are off to a good one!!
