Who needs more money for beauty splurges? I dooooo!

Times are hard yo. But I don’t have to tell you that. Those gas prices keep climbing and the cost of spinach these days are crazy. Fo reals. I’ve become even more frugal (which I thought was impossible) by doing little things like putting Elle in cloth diapers and cutting my cable. I am also a HUGE proponent of shopping at thrift stores. I was doing it before it became popular in a song. Ha! And I’m all about selling items I don’t use to get some cash. Like those old CDs that I have from the 90’s…yeah. Those can go. I’ve practically gone digital when it comes to listening to music so who needs a CD?

Magpie does!

DVDs

If you’ve got a stash of CDs and DVDS that are just collecting dust, you could be sitting on a goldmine. I’m serious! Selling your old unwanted goods online can have you racking in some money, honey. And even if it isn’t a significant amount, who doesn’t want to get $10 from movies that you’ll probably never watch again?

Magpie is cool because it’s simple and it costs you nothing to ship your CDs and DVDs out to them. There isn’t any wondering about how much you’ll get paid because after putting in barcode information, you instantly get a price as to what your item is worth. Esposo and I already have a stack of DVDs that we’re going to go through to see if we can sell ‘em and get some extra money.

I think I can survive without watching Home Alone 2 on DVD again. And I’m pretty sure it’s on Netflix sooo yeahhhh.

Anyone else thinkin’ about saving money by selling CDs and DVDs?

China Glaze Sunsational collection, part I

I can’t believe it’s almost already fall. Eek! I have to quickly crank out this review before the leaves start droppin’ on me. China Glaze always knows how to release a stellar summer nail polish collection and Sunsational isn’t any less. I received these babies for review and these are the first 6.

China Glaze Sunsational collection

Oh! And the best part…a lot of them have jelly finishes. *squeals*

China Glaze Sun of a Peach

Sun of a Peach is a gorgeous peachy creme. I don’t own anything like it. Sure, it took 4 coats to reach an opaque finish but whatever. It’s gorgeous!

China Glaze Are You Jelly?

Are You Jelly? Is a purple jelly that you basically need. Yeah, I said it. You NEED this one. Especially if you love purple nail polishes as much as I do. She’s super sheer so you’ll need 3-4 coats to get an opaque finish but she’s fantastic with layering a glitter in between. It’s such a stunning purple!

China Glaze Keepin' It Teal

Keepin’ It Teal is a turquoise jelly that surprised me! I thought for sure this one was going to stain my nails but it didn’t! I usually don’t wear turquoise polishes because they are notorious for staining the nails. I love this one. Another 3-4 coat wonder but it’s a stunning turquoise that has a beautiful application.

China Glaze You Drive Me Coconuts

You Drive Me Coconuts is an insanely bright and hot pink creme. It isn’t as jelly-fied as the other polishes but it’ll still require 3-4 coats. It is so so bright and pretty and will make the perfect pedicure color.

China Glaze Isle See You Later

Isle See You Later is a marine blue that has a hard time reaching an opaque finish. Which sucks because I would have loved for this one to work. I applied 5 coats and this one just wouldn’t work for me. Ah well…can’t win ‘em all, huh? The formula of this one seems to be a bit on the watery side compared to the others.

China Glaze Neon & On & On

Neon & On & On is between baby girl pink and coral. It’s not my favorite shade of the bunch because I found that it applied unevenly. It isn’t a creme and it isn’t quite a jelly so the formula was a bit challenging to work with. And I’m not sure how flattering it is on my nails.

I’ve got 6 more of these to review so stay tuned but in the meantime if you just have to buy these ASAP (can’t blame you), you can snag ‘em anywhere at Sally Beauty Supply, ULTA and anywhere China Glaze polishes are sold for about $3.99 a bottle.

See any that you like?

Makeup Wars: My Top 3 Favorite Oils

This week my Makeup Wars sisters and I are talking about oils. Weeeee!!

Cosmetic oils

Oils are totally a fad and er’thing now but honey, when I was growing up, oils were staples. Just like the butters. Brands think they are being all innovative by dumping naturally extracted oils in their products  but I’ve been using these oils in their original origins for yearsssss. I hoard many because they all have their uses but my favorite are these three…

Coconut oil

Coconut oil

Yes, girl. Yes. Coconut oil is the TRUTH! I use it daily and on every part of my body. Coconut oil gets slathered all over after a shower. I use it in my hair. I use it to remove makeup. I put it on my baheh, I use it to lubricate the nips after pumping (TMI nothin’…if you’ve ever put your nip in a baby’s mouth or in a flange, you know how badly the nippies need to be soothed afterwards) and I use it to moisturize cuticles. And if I’m craving an omelette or green smoothie, I’m using a teaspoon of coocnut oil. We don’t use PAM cooking spray. We use coconut oil. And don’t even get me started on coconut milk. Basically, El Coconut needs to run for President so that I can be its Campaign Manager.

Maracuja Oil

I hadn’t heard of maracuja oil until Tarte released it. And then I fell in love. It’s far from cheap if you get it from them but it’s worth the investment because this is one oil that doesn’t feel…oily. It’s amazing! I can slather this stuff all over and don’t feel like I can slip and slide down the tile floors. Elle’s super dry skin loves maracuja oil. Her skin sucks it up and while it won’t leave an oily film, it still feels nice and moisturized. Tarte also sells a version of this in a roller ball dispenser.

Best idea ever because now I can oil up on the go!

Argan oil

DSC_6110

I first learned of argan oil when I was aimlessly scrolling on TV and got trapped by QVC. Josie Maran was talking about her argan-infused products and I made my first purchase and then fell in love. To be such a light oil, argan oil is powerful! A little goes a long way and like maracuja oil, it doesn’t leave me feeling greasy. I also really adore argan oil because it plays nicely when placed in other products. I’ve even mixed my BB cream with this stuff and it didn’t cause any problems.

Honorable Mentions:
-Jamaican black castor oil
-grapeseed oil
-olive oil
-sweet almond oil
-jojoba oil

Check out some of my Makeup Wars girls’ favorite oils.

Do you have a fave?

Beauty in Mommyhood: Elle is 7 Months Old

Baby is 7 months old

Dear Elle,

Oh my big girl…you’ve been going through so much this past month. Between teething pain, learning how to get up on all 4’s and developing some attachment to Mommy and Daddy, you have taken us on quite a trip. And that’s okay. Every day we’re noticing how much you’re changing. It is painfully obvious how much our baby is growing. When you want something, you won’t hesitate to let us know by shrieking. You’re grabbing at everythiiiiing (including Daddy’s beard) and I love watching you inspect a toy thoroughly before jamming it in your mouth.

Happy baby

My favorite thing to do with you is take you outside to see the fountain in the neighborhood. You LOVE this fountain. You’re just like me in that regard because I love water too. You also love taking a bath. And you had your first trip to the pool this month!

Baby bathing suit

It’s so much fun watching you splash around in it. You skin is clearly up and it’s due to mama kicking gluten out of her diet. I feel terrible that the reason why your skin was going haywire was because of me consuming gluten. Your skin used to be itchy and red and you used to scratch it so hard that you would bleed. But not anymore!

Pretty baby

We went to our first playdate a few weeks ago and I got to see how excited you are around other kids. You are really a social butterfly. It’s amazing to watch you giggle and squirm when you’re around babies your own age. It was always hard sending you off to your sitter at 3 months but now I’m glad I did because it’s obvious that you need and love the social interactions. Oh…and you learned how to wave! Which, I think, is the cutest thing eeeeever. You can wave hello and bye bye.

And then there’s food…

Baby eats peas

We officially started you on food at 6 months but you weren’t really interested. Things have changed and now you are giving food a chance. But only if you can feed yourself. You want to be in control. You have no interest in purées so we offer you smaller versions of the fruit and veggies that we eat. It’s called “baby led weaning” and so far it has been working for us. You’ve eaten sweet potatoes, carrots, strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, bananas, peas apples, eggs, spinach and lots of other veggies. We’re staying away from grains (remember, you’ve got that gluten allergy), meat and dairy. Feeding you this way has allowed us to eat healthier so it’s working out for everyone. You are also drinking water or breast milk from a cup after you have food. You are surprisingly good at not spilling it everywhere.

Every time I take a picture of you I am noticing how you don’t look like my little bitty baby anymore. You’re growing up and ohmigoodness, I’m tearing up just typing this. Mama doesn’t know why. I adore watching you grow but but…I don’t know, I just loved the newborn period. As hard as it was, I loved it. I know each month and year will come with challenges and while I’m excited to see what cool thing you do next, I also get sad.

Baby at table

I know it sounds strange but I think other parents can relate. I’m finding so many ways to continue to be close to you though. I know you want to be independent and not cuddle up on mama so much but between babywearing, taking walks and reading stories…

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

…I manage to continue to baby you. And will do so for quite some time. Oh! And this crawling thing is starting to happen…

Baby crawling

I can’t believe it. I was all freaking out at how you didn’t show any interest in crawling and then one day you popped up on all 4’s and did that. Now I want you to take your time. Ha! I’ve finally managed to get you in cloth diapers 100% of the time

Sunbaby cloth diapers

My crunchy mom status has gone to new height. I always thought cloth diapering would be a good way to go but I never thought I’d actually do it. And yet, here we are. Saving a TON of money on not buying diapers.

Elle Stats:

First Word Was Said: DaDa!
Favorite Food: Eggs and stawberries
Favorite Toy: Sophie the Giraffe
Favorite Place To Be: On someone’s back
Most Hated Place To Be: Your car seat
Things That Make You Laugh: When Daddy takes you on flights, when Mama steals your neck sugar, playing peek-a-boo, having your tummy kissed and when FaceTime’ing with Gam.
A Sad Moment: You had your first fever this month. It lasted for 2 days and you were miserable. We figured it was due to teething and while we can see those 2 teeth at the bottom, they haven’t popped up just yet.

Oh, and guess what? You are starting to look more and more like me! This makes your Mama very happy. And Daddy is jealous. You’re so loved and adored that we both want you to look like us.

Keep making us proud, baby girl.

Love You,
Mama

Baby Goodies from Alex and Alexa

This post is sponsored by Alex and Alexa. I’ve featured this super cute baby site on Clumps of Mascara before. Elle is quite the fashionista. No thanks to me because my fashion-sense is somewhere between boho and hippie. But dressing  a baby girl is so much easier. Elle Belle is pretty petite for her age and it’s a great thing because she can really get some use out of her clothes before growing out of them. I’m okay with spending just a little bit more on ‘em because I know we’ll get our money’s worth.

…that is, if she doesn’t poop ‘em up. Parents know what I mean. Check out some of the baby stuff I’m lusting for on Alex and Alexa.

Alex and Alexa

Sophie La Girafe

Let’s talk toys first because Elle, after all, is a baby. She could care less about dressin’ cute. She just wants to play! Sophie the Giraffe is this insanely popular toy for teething babies. I haven’t purchased it because it’s upward $30 but I can totally get down with the bath tub version. Elle Belle loves splashing in the tub so I know she would enjoy this.

Bang Bang Copenhagen Navy & White Stripe Headband

My sweet girl rocks the headbands. They’re her signature. I’ve never seen one so cute and retro. She doesn’t have a lot of black in her wardrobe so I’m thinking around winter, she’ll have some darker shades. This headband will fit beautifully in her already large headband collection.

Tate Publishing Shape by David Goodman and Zoe Miller

I’ve been reading to Elle since she was in my belly. It’s a little hard reading to her these days because she likes to eat the books but that doesn’t stop me from trying. I like how colorful this book is. I mean, it’s beautiful, full of colors and shapes. And it’s the kind of book I’ll be okay with reading a thousand times.

Mirella Pink Dragonfly Tutu

All little girls need tutus. I promised not to be that Mom that would make her daughter dress super girly but I can’t help it. She’ll just look too darling in a tutu. I doubt we’ll go anywhere in it but I am so okay with taking pictures of her in it and calling it a day.

Sneakers

Elle needs kids sneakers but her feet are so so small. She can barely get into a size 2. That’s okay though. I’ll be stashing sneaks until her feet grow a little bigger. Alex and Alexa have such adorable shoes for babies and toddlers.

Mamas, Grandmamas, godmamas, Aunties, or friends who have friends with babies…did you see anything cutesy?

No one gets acne in their 60’s…right?

It’s been many many mannnnny years since I’ve tried any Clearsil products but apparently it’s still super popular. My sister is in love with this stuff…

Clearasil Refreshing Superfruit Wash

I didn’t even know Clearasil was doin’ big thangs. My baby cousin (who isn’t so much a baby anymore. She’s almost 20 and a freshman in college. *tear*) is still fighting acne so I think I’m going to scoop this up for her. She’s big on having a no-nonsense skincare routine. And an affordable one too.

Clearasil

Have you tried Clearasil lately? I always thought it was targeted to younger folx but I don’t know…it looks like their line-up can fit those of us who still deal with acne in our 30’s,40’s and 50’s.

Because acne DOES clear up after that. I think. There aren’t any 60-year old’s with acne still, right?
