Guess who won a Best Blogger Contest?

The other week I was aimlessly checking my Twitter feed and came across a tweet from Shecky’s. You know about Shecky’s, don’t you? They only throw the BEST Girls Night Out events everrrrr. I went to the one in Miami a few months ago and had an amazing time.

Shecky’s was having a Best Blogger contest and I decided to enter. The winner would get the opportunity to write articles for the Shecky’s community. Well…I won! Total shocker, right? I am humbled and honored and can’t wait to crank out pieces.

Follow what I’m writing by subscribing to Shecky’s newsletter.

See you there, lovelies!

Sally Hansen’s Diamonds and Hidden Treasure

Happy Saturday, darlings!

I just HAD to tell you about the awesomeness that is Sally Hansen.

They’ve partnered with Brides Magazine and The Diamond Vault Collection and one lucky winner will win a custom diamond eternity band valued at $3,000, and a collection of Sally Hansen® wedding-worthy products, including Diamond Strength® Nail Color for brilliant nails and Diamond 12 Hour Lip Treatment for lavish lips and lasting moisture. The contest is here.

What an awesome gift for my brides or brides-to-be! And since we’re talkin’ about Lady SH, the beauty/nail blogosphere is going nuts over the polish Hidden Treasure.

The polish was released with the 2010 Tracey Reese Spring collection and it is like THEE hardest polish to find ever. In fact, I tweeted my whereabouts on Four Square. And was elated when I found Hidden Treasure!

Sally Hansen is buy 1, get 1 50% of this week so I snagged Thinking of Blue and layered the hard to find Hidden Treasure on top.

Is it not faint worthy or what? Brooke from Getcha Nails Did the BEST layering with this polish. And my girl Scrangie reviews the entire collection. If you’ve seen this polish anywhere, snag it with the quickness! But then again, it is rather hidden so good luck with that.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all of my Mommies!

FOTD Friday: Halloween Look!

Happy Friday, beautiful people! Ohmigoodness, this week has been an amazing one! Between yesterday’s Breast Cancer Awareness contest, gas goin’ day and just being alive, I can’t complain! This week’s FOTD goes in conjunction the Jaimie from Just Kiss ‘N Makeup‘s Halloween contest.

I loooove doing this! Last year I did two.

I love doing looks with pops of color! This year I wanted my look to have a story behind it.

Yeeeep, go ‘head and pull up a chair.

LOL, I’m just playin’…I won’t be long. I am in LOVE with all things African. The culture, the music, the food, the history, the garments..I just love my heritage. But as an African American with untraceable roots to the African continent, I often find a hard time “connecting” to my lost background. When I first jumped on the “Halloween Look” bandwagon, I immediately knew I wanted to do an African look. Here was my inspiration:

I loved it! That green goes beautifully against her dark skin. Green eyeshadows, actually have a special place in my make-up stash. Meet the family…

Altogether I used a combination of ALL of those greens so should you need specific names, just ask. :) I even tried some false lashes for the first time. They were great for the look but I can’t see myself ever wearing those things regularly. My eyes were just a waterin’.

For the lips, I decided to go with a 14K color so I used some of my MAC Golden Lemon pigment and mixed it with a clear gloss (N.Y.C. Cosmetics, holla!).

To make the green pop even more I bronzed my face down with Cargo Bronzer. I love how it didn’t make me ashy but gave me “glow”. The lining of the mask comes from Urban Decays 24/7 eyeliner in Envy. So here’s the look!

Sometimes I get TOO
ANTM in my pictures, uh? HA!

Do yall know I walked around my house like this?! I just felt good with the make-up and the wrap and the clothes! Loved it! Why not a scary look? I’m not a big fan of Halloween to begin with and I don’t really like scary stuffs. Hence why I can’t watch the nightly news.

I kid! Not really but kinda. :)

There’s my submission for the contest! What do yall think?

Be honest, be honest…

Have a wonderfuuuul weekend!!

FOTD Friday: Flashback & Contest Winners

It has been a super long week, yall. I have had A LOT of good news, most of which I will share later, but I have also had my share of exhausting busy-ness. But I can’t complain. I’m the type that feels “funny” when my life isn’t in overdrive.

To continue on with the Mascara Monday rewind, I decided to post some of my boldest FOTDs. Most of these were done when I was living in Los Angeles and playing in make-up really became not only a hobby, but….a friend. I spent hours every night trying to come up with some creative ish. My skills weren’t so hot but this was really when I looooved eyeshadow.

My first week in LA….I really had nothing else to do but do craaaazy bold looks.

Ahhh, the Jigsaw piece. I had so much fun doing this.

Sunshine seriously consisted of 3 products. Loved this look!

Who remembers MAC Mi’Lady mineralized duo?

Awww….this is my FIRST all MAC look. I got addicted to MAC during the C-Shock era last summer and was all over that Wondergrass paired with Humid. And you couldn’t tell me nothin’ about those 3D lip glasses. I can’t believe that was only a year ago and I’ve moved 4 times since then!

That nude lip is sick! I’ve got to try to do that again. Loved this look….around this time, I started to tone down the BOLD looks and focus on pretty pinks/purples and neutrals.

If you remember these looks, you are serious a vetern Clumps of Mascara viewer! And I loves you for it!!

Now for the 2 winning Stila
Lipstick Contest Entries:

“I vote because i’m scared that if I don’t i’ll be paying 20 bucks a gallon for some gas in a matter of months. lol jk…

It’s important to vote because not doing so would be single handedly snatching away our voice. No vote…no voice. No voice…no song. I sing my song for the woman with sore feet who went against the rules and sat at the front of the bus. I sing my song for young children that got sprayed with fire hoses. I sing my song for abused & dominated women. I sing my song for shackled slaves. I sing my song for ME, and most importantly…for my future children.”

AND

“It is sooo important to vote, especially in this day and age. Many people, especially women, have fought for our right to vote and have a say about the future of our country. As women, we are always affected by who our President because many issues affect us and our children – gun control, abortion rights, education, health insurance – the list goes on and on. If we don’t cast our vote and choose – we are being complacent and currently, letting men make decisions for us. Vote, vote, vote!! Especially this time – we need change so we can get out of the recession, improve the economy and spend money on important stuff – like makeup!”

-Shefali

I love how these ladies touched on so many issues in just a few words. True beauty lies not in this make-up bit we talk about but our cognizance of worldwide issues; and how they will affect our future. I love yall!! Shoot me emails so I can send off your lippies. Thank you to all of the submissions.

Stila’s Rock the Vote Red and contest!

Hey lovely folx. Beauty bloggers everywhere have been buzzing about Stila’s “Rock the Vote Red”. I’m going to go ahead and assume that you beautiful people are registered to vote. So why not show support for your favorite candidate by rockin’ a lovely red lippie?

I’m not going to pretend that I’m super patriotic but I know many women and African Americans have died so that I can vote. I think it’s great that a cosmetic company like Stila is combining politics and beauty for a wonderful cause.

Not familiar with Stila’s lipsticks? Check me out in the beautifully sheer color “Natalie”

And the oh la la “Dominique”

Stila’s lippies aren’t too drying either so I’m definitely getting that “Rock the Vote Red” lipstick as soon as the make-up probation is lifted. And don’t even get me started on the “But Black can’t wear red lipsticks” bit. We alllll know that isn’t true, chicas so head on over to Stila’s website to cop your powerful red lipstick.

But I shouldn’t be the the only one glorifying Stila’s lipsticks. I am giving away “Ariel” and “Michaela”. How to snag them? Tell me your reason for why you think voting is so important. The best two answers to make me laugh, go “hmm” or bring me close to tears WIN! You can leave your answers in the comment or you can email me at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.

Of course if you’ve won a contest in the last 6 months, you aren’t eligible. But I still want to hear your thoughts! Contest ends Wednesday, August 6, 2008 and winners will be announced soon after. Hop to it, ladies!

Brown Beauties and Sun Protection

This post may be little delayed being that summer is more than halfway over with but better late than never, right? I hope by now you all know the importance of taking care of our skin, but even more so during those hot summer months.

In Florida we have two types of seasons: hot and hotter. I don’t remember putting on a ton a sunscreen growing up as a child; probably because of the idea that “Black folx don’t need sun protection because we are already dark” myth. Oh yes, it sounds funny but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to the beach with my girlfriends and they’ve packed everything in their beach bags EXCEPT sunscreen.

So let’s make this clear:

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen

The sun does NOT discriminate so it is important that we all take care of our skin year round but especially when the sun is blazing.

Since becoming a beauty editor, I have become a bit more cognizant in sun protection on my face as well as my body. Para mi cara, I use the following:

Olay Complete SPF 15

This has been my HG moisturizer for some months now. I doubt I will ever switch to anything else. It is wonderfully moisturizing for my relatively dry skin and isn’t so thick to where I feel like it is clogging my pores. When I break a sweat from working out, it doesn’t leave any residue. For less than $10, I can’t ask for anything more in a moisturizer. I tend to use this every day and even at night sometimes.

Clinique Superdefense Action Moisturizer SPF

Now if I know I’m going to be outside more on a particular day I pull out the Superdefense. This moisturizer is a bit thick in consistency but it doesn’t feel “heavy” which I can appreciate. I LOVE it! It has that ‘sun block-y’ smell that I know I most of us can’t stand but it was perfect for jammin’ at Bayside in Miami this past weekend. The price is steep. For $39.50 you only get 1.7 oz little jar but can I tell you a secret? I’ve been using my sample jar for about 4 weeks now. Ha!

I’ve also been playing around with Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30 but I haven’t had the best results being that it gives me that ghostly look. The product says that it is translucent but I object being that it didn’t look too flattering my on brown brown skin. Which made me sad because the concept is ideal; especially with this “mineral make-up” obsession going on in the beauty world.

We’ve covered face, but let’s not forget the body, baby. I have three different levels of SPFs that I use throughout the summer.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula SPF 15 Body Lotion

I don’t know about yall, but my Momma has been using Palmer’s products for as long as I can remember. What I don’t remember is this particular body lotion. It smells divine! Like a cookie! Now granted, I’m not the type that likes to go around smelling like food. The smell is a bit overpowering for me but pleasant to say the least. I generally use when I’m getting ready for work in the morning and know I will be hittin’ the streets after work for a “every other day” jog. Tis cheap too and provides enough protection without that “smell”.

Peter Thomas Roth Continuous Sunscreen Mist SPF 30

I’m diggin’ this sunscreen each time I wear it. The fact that it is oil-free, water-resistant and has some Vitamin E up in it, well…I mean this is perfect for a quick “walking the outlet malls” hit. I know some people have complexes about aerosol cans and while I don’t use this as much as my other sunscreen products I find that it does the job for when I really don’t have time to lather lotion up and down my arms and legs.

Banana Boat UltraDefense Sunblock Lotion SPF 80

I died laughing when I first saw this product. SPF 80. “Isn’t that a bit extreme?” I thought to myself. But alas the tube of sun blockin’ lube (LOL, I’m a mess) ended up in my basket. I don’t even think about loungin’ by the pool or on a beach chair without this baby here. It provides the ultimate protection for my melanin enriched skin.

….and don’t forget those lippies. It’s a bit on the pricey side but I stand by my MAC Lip Conditioner SPF 15. It is the greatest!

So if you’ve read this far, I’m thinkin’ you deserve the chance to win a sweet treat. I have 3 Lip Butters from Palmers. These glosses come in Dark Chocolate & Cherry AND Dark Chocolate & Peppermint and they taste….I mean feel divine on the lips. First 4 folx to email me the correct answer to the following question WIN!

Where was I born?

…..hint: it’s in Florida and it is a relatively large city. You only get one guess so good luck! Remember to email me, do not leave comments. Readers who have won within the past 6 months are ineligible. As well as personal friends and family members….yes Mom, hate to call you out again but that means you. I will announce the winners on Friday, July 18 during the FOTD Friday post.

Good luck and keep blockin’!

….oh wait, I would love to know what you other brown folx are wearing. Am I the only one that once thought we didn’t have to wear sunscreen? Speak on it!
