Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Queen volume mascara

Nope, it’s not new. You probably haven’t seen any commercials for this mascara in a while….if ever. I am huge fan of CoverGirl’s Queen line. Did the mascara impress me? Hmm….

CoverGirl Queen Volume mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 ($7.00-ish at drugstores)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: The packaging…

The truth:
Eh…it’s not BAD.

What I loved about it: It gave a good amount of volume.

What I didn’t like: The wand was massive. I’m so not a fan of wands like this:

Overall: I didn’t have have high expectations for this baby. And I guess that’s a good thing because it really didn’t let me down. When I think of CoverGirl mascaras, my mind always flashes back to the fabulousness that is Lash Blast. CoverGirl got it right with that mascara. Don’t get me wrong, Queen isn’t “bad”. It’s just an average mascara. Now and days mascaras are vibrating and have funky wands and colors and well, it doesn’t look like CG Queen volume can compete.

The larger wand makes for difficult application. For ladies with smaller lids and lashes, y’all will endure somewhat of a struggle. This wand doesn’t work too well with getting in the corners either.

In the volumizing department, it fairs well. In fact, I was shocked at the amount of volume that I got. I didn’t see much length but the volume was enough for me. No real major problems either. *yawn* It works. It works well. But don’t don’t expect to be blown away. And if you’re looking for just a bit of volume and don’t need any tricks….you may like this one. But if you’re like me and want fireworks after applying a new mascara…NEXT!

Would I recommend it?: Only if you find it on sale or just have a general interest on how it works. I think there are better ones out there. But if you do end up getting it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed?

What do you think about CoverGirl’s Queen volume? A fan?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Blast Length

Yeaaaa mon!! CoverGirl hits us with another Lash Blast mascara. This baby is supposed to make your lashes 80% longer using Elsta Nylon.
Many of us have high hopes after finding so much success with the original Lash Blast. Did this one deliver?
Is it just as good if not better than its big sister?
We’ll seeee…..
CoverGirl Lash Blast Length

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7 at drugstores, Wal-Mart and Target)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “A perfectly matched system that combines an advanced Super-Length brush and our unique lengthening Elsta-Nylon formula for extreme lash length that won’t break or flake off. “

The truth:
I’m glad to see another lengthening mascara hit the market. This one ain’t too shabby.

What I loved about it: The wand is great! I would have loved if the tip was a little more triangular just so I could attach those fibers to the inner lashes a little easier. But overall, the bristles (all 450 of ‘em….I counted. Hehe, j/k) are great at grabbing my lashes.

What I didn’t like: I won’t complain about the lack of volume because I know most lengthening mascara have this issue–that issue being that they ONLY lengthen. I wish I could have gotten a bit more length.

Overall:
Lash Blast is back, baby!! I think we need to throw a party! When I first heard about this mascara, I was excited. Then again—I get excited about the release of all mascaras.
But Last Blast is different because a great deal of consumers all over the word seemed to like it. Check out my review here. Cover Girl has decided to join the mascara bandwagon and release a mascara that has some innovative formula that gives the effect of wearing real lash extensions. We have seen this before from Too Faced Lash Injection, Imju Fiberwig, Blinc Kiss Me and L’Oreal Lash Extension beauty tubes. I have nicknamed these mascaras “fiber mascaras” because they all have little “fibers” (CoverGirl’s LB Length’s are called nylon fibers) that attach on to the lashes creating looooong lashes.
Wait—I was able to catch one of those fibers in action. Look to the right of the brush. Do you see one? It’s waving at you!
What I love about CoverGirl’s attempt in this is how light my lashes feel. They don’t feel heavy and I’m not enduring the flakiness that some fiber mascaras may have.
Now–I really wish I could have gotten some more length. Actually, a lot more. My lashes don’t behave so well with JUST a lengthening mascara. They tend to act all wonky and I have to do a lot of manipulation just to make them look decent.
See…..

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

To show how much better lengthening mascaras behave when they have a little help from a volumizing partner, I used 1 coat of Lancome Defincils Pro AND 2 coats of CoverGirl Lash Blast length on the left eye vs. 2 coats of Lash Blast Length by her lonesome on the right eye.

Can you see a little more volume on the left eye’s lashes? I can.

Would I recommend it?: I do because I think it will be be phenomenal for ladies with extremely short lashes. And if your lashes behave better than mine….you will really like it. I think it’s worth a try for any avid mascara shopper out there!
I’m playing around with embedding my videos in posts but we’ll see how long this lasts. Mofos be stealin’ vids, man. :( But do check out the video review and see this mascara in action.

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Beauty Review: CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain

Good day, family!

Before we get on with the review, just giving you a heads up of the new “review format”. Instead of just a looooong article with pictures about the products, I will now break it down much like the mascara review. Should make it a lot easier for you to decide if you are interested in the product or not. Okay?

OKAY!

Introducing….

CoverGirl’s Outlast Lip Stain

Price: 4 out of 5 (shouldn’t be more than $7)
Packaging: I haven’t decided if I really like using a pen for lip color application.
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “A lightweight flush of color that lasts for hours without the heavy look or feel of an ordinary lipstick.” (source)

The truth: Well shucks….that’s a pretty accurate claim.

What I loved about it:
It looks cool! Yall know I’m all about “innovative beauty”. Using products that don’t look like their previous predecessors is such fun to me. I liked the idea of using a marker-looking product to apply a lip color. I am a fan of lipstick stains so I knew that I would like this.

And look, Mom! It really does look like a marker!

CoverGirl gets a good 10 points in the smell/taste department. The pen has a pleasant smell and doesn’t turn my stomach upside down if I accidentally lick my lips.

I found that it DOES last for quite awhile. Will it last for 12 hours? Probably not….but I don’t keep lip colors on that long anyway so that’s not important to me. I found that it did well while drinking my 3 bottles of water over a span of 5 hours. I got 425 (not sure of the color) and it goes on pretty well…

What I didn’t like: My goodness, it’s drying!! This product will not work well if you already have dry chapped lips…which I think is a great deal of us with the winter season is full swing.

Okay, so what if I live in Florida….it got down to 40 degrees here a few days and my lips were feeling every bit of it! This product provides ZERO moisture. And should you decide to use a balm or chapstick under it, guess what? It will defeat the purpose of it being a stain. It will look like a regular ole’ gloss. Boooo….

Overall: So it’s not a bad product. But I find that it is really hard to work on my dry lips. And we won’t even talk about how unforgiving this is if you have some lines in your lippies. Oh man…..exhibit A.

Not baaaad but not good either.

I find that throwing a lip gloss on top alleviates the problem but then it looks like a regular gloss. Hmm….see the issue?

Would I recommend it?: Only if you have perfectly smooth lips that don’t need much moisture. If you are like me and have slight imperfections and suffer from dry lips, then this may not work so much. But it is still worth a try as it is a fun product to use!

Muuuuuuah,

Have you entered the contest?

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Blast

Happy Monday, beautiful people. I’m back!!

No more “scheduled posts”. I am soooo happy to be back home and glad that I was able to not only head up to D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration, but I also got to spend some time with some of my favorite beauty bloggin’ babes…also known as The Pretty Committee.

Do you see me in the back being all “extra”. Wow. Ohmigoodness, we had a ball. Thanks Shana for that picture. More about those happenings later. Let’s get to the mascara review. I know, I know. This mascara is quite ancient, ain’t it? I have been getting several requests for me to review it. I must admit….I was a little annoyed with having to re-REVIEW this mascara again but I’m glad I did!

CoverGirl Lash Blast
mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 ($7)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: “Get a blast of lush, volumized lashes! LashBlast’s patented volume-boosting formula and patent-pending brush are designed to max-out each and every lash, leaving you with the ultimate big lash look.” (source)

The truth: Ummm, wow!! This is good! And I feel like a cosmetic loser for just now showing love to a mascara that’s been out for 288 years.

What I loved about it:
The volume is insane! I mean…it really is there. And it’s there instantly! I almost didn’t need two coats but I’m used to always applying two so I did so out of habit.

What I didn’t like: Like most–the wand. But that’s a given.

It’s good and terrible (name that movie!!). Good because once you get the hang out it…it isn’t so bad. Terrible because..well, look at it!

Overall: This is such an old mascara! I mean…it’s funny that I am just now reviewing it because it has been around for a minute. Actually I did a small review of it in one of my first YouTube videos. Thanks to those who asked me to review it again because I have fallen in love with it! I have been wearing this mascara for quite a while now and am amazed at the volume factor. I found that it also gave me a little length. I didn’t experience any flaking and it held up throughout the day. Again…what a GREAT mascara!

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

It is the TRUTH, ladies! While strolling through CVS a few days ago I noticed that Lash Blast has a sister mascara called Lash Blast Luxe.

However, I will NOT be reviewing this baby here because I refuse to use mascaras with glitter in them. I had a bad experience with that awful CoverGirl Eyelights mascara. Glitter + mascara= eye irritation!! It infuriates me that these companies don’t get this. Goodness gracious….

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely!! Great deal and great mascara if you can get used to the wand.

If you are a crazy mascara consumer like me, I am sure you have tried this one. Tell me what you think!! Would you try the Lash Blast Luxe?

Stay beautiful….and intelligent (inside joke, hehe),

Beauty Review: CoverGirl Queen’s Natural Hue Minerals

There is a reason why I don’t do much discussion on foundations/face powders here at Clumps of Mascara.

I don’t wear them. I have no REAL reason for not wearing them. I just don’t.

Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive CoverGirl Queen Collection’s Natural Hue Mineral pressed powder and bronzer. This of course, had me excited because I had high hopes for the popular drugstore cosmetic line made just for women of color!

First up to bat…..the pressed powder.

What It Says
“Mineral enriched formula controls shine 30% better than the leading pressed powder. Provides natural, even coverage that lasts for hours.”

Wow, I concur. This powder is pretty excellent. For one…look how it blends beautifully with my complexion.

Where the little white sponge ends is where I “marked” my face with the powder. You can’t even see it! Which is beautiful because ain’t nothin’ worse than not having a face powder match your complexion. My color for the powder is Ebony Bronze 1.

Here’s how it looks all over.

I am beyond impressed! I found that that the powder was long-lasting and light on my face. The latter is extremely important to me. If I product feels too “heavy”, I just can’t wear it for fear that it will break me out. And I know that using a sponge to apply powders isn’t the best thing but I only used it once. See…..I know. *big grin*

Next up, we have the Bronzer, also in Ebony Bronze.

What It Says
“Get a sun kissed glow without the shine. Mineral enriched formula pampers skin and controls shine.”

I didn’t see much purpose for the bronzer. First of all, it was a little too glittery for my liking. And just a tad bit too dark. When I think of a bronzer of think of a gold-ish color. And I’m not sure I like the application of this baby here too. It took a ton of swipes before I could load it up effectively on my brush.

And even then….I didn’t feel like it complimented my skin well….can you see it?

I would much prefer a highlight than this dark bronzer here.

The final look:

The coverage is fantastic and I don’t even look like I’m wearing make-up which is a huge plus for me. Overall, I absolutely loooove the look and feel of the Natural Hue Minerals Pressed Powder. The bronzer? Not so much as I think I have a ton of great highlighters/blushes that can compliment my skin better. But I am impressed nonetheless and a little upset at myself for not dabbling in these products sooner. Have any of you tried these products?

Tell me what you think!

Stay beautiful!

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Exact Eyelights

Happy Monday, family!!

Ahhhh, the year is passing us by, uh? I could have sworn I was juuust making my way to Long Beach in California early February. But I’m not complaining because I am one of those annoyingly happy people during the holidays. I adore Christmas time and was ecstatic to hear Christmas music as I was strolling through Sephora on Saturday. It will only be a matter of time until I start getting my Christmas tree together. Yessss!

Okay–back to business. This was a reader requested mascara. I received several emails about this mascara waaay before I even saw it in stores. And then I saw the display featuring the omnipresent Rihanna. I swear that chick seems to be everywhere. Did this mascara live up claim of brightening the eyes? Hmmm….

CoverGirl Exact Eyelights

Price: 5 out of 5 ($6.00 from CVS)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 1 out of 5

What it claims: “The unique eye brightening formula combined with the patented No Clump brush technology brings out the color of your eyes and gives you gorgeous clump-free lashes.”

The truth: Wait, what? I’m looking for my eyes to be brighter? What the….is there a mini flashlight in the mascara tube or something? I don’t get it.

What I loved about it: Uh….I love how the tube is white and then fades out into a gray and then black. Seriously the only good thing about this mascara.

What I didn’t like: Gee, where to start…..okay, here’s the wand.

Not bad but not spectacular either. I didn’t like how the “hairs” of the wand weren’t elongated all the way out. You see how they start small and then get bigger? Well, what sense does that make, CoverGirl? How am I going to get the inner lashes? Yikes!

Overall: I don’t really know what CoverGirl’s motive was for this mascara. Some promise length. Others promise curl. And then some promise clump free separation, volume, long lasting wear, etc. But how many people have actually said, “Gosh, I wish my brown eyes looked brighter!” *looks around* One would assume that if for whatever you reason you wanted your eyes to appear “brighter” then you would perhaps play in around in eye make-up that compliments your eye color, right? CoverGirl has tried to be innovative and failed, in my opinion. This mascara does nothing. See for yourself…

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

The length isn’t bad but that’s not what I l’m looking for. Do my eyes appear brighter to you, folx? No. I was extremely frustrated with this claim not delivering. And while the mascara itself didn’t clump on me, I experienced terrible fall-out in my eyes. Each day that I wore it, I had eye irritation allll day. Not good. And then I figured out why. Look closely at this picture and enlarge if you have to.

The mascara apparently has little glitterly flecks that are supposed to “illuminate” your eyes. I get it! But nope, take it back to the chopping block, CoverGirl. These little flecks are irritaters (made that word up) that should not be in a product that goes so close to the eye. That’s a no-no. And I’m sure it would be far worse if I were a contact wearer. Not a good idea.

Would I recommend it: Absolutely not. I don’t think it’s very safe for the eye. I mean, at all…plus it doesn’t do anything. Definitely not a fan of this mascara.

*wipes brow* I’m trashing this baby here. So what do you think? Has anyone else tried this mascara? I hate to give such a not-good report but I must keep it real with yall. Still interested in testing out this mascara? What say you?

CoM TV featuring B…..haha, that rhymes!
*crickets* Oh….never mind

Have a wonderful Monday and Happy Veteran’s Day!

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Exact

Happy Monday, pretty people! I hope that you all had wonderful weekends. Between checkin’ out Tyler Perry’s newest movie, shoppin’ at Ikea (OMG, I loooove that place), studying for the GRE and workin’ out, I was able to stay pretty busy. And I doubt I will ever love Mondays except for no other reason that Mascara Mondays. Yessss!!! Check out what we have this week.

CoverGirl’s Lash Exact Mascara

Price: 3.5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims: “No clumps on the brush means no clumps on the lashes for a DEFINED and LONG lash look.”

The truth: Hmm, it’s not bad. I didn’t get any clumps so it stands up against its claim!

What I loved about it: I really like the brush….but then again, I’m becoming a fan to the 3D wand since I’m learned how to use it efficiently.

What I didn’t like: Ummm, I would have liked if it gave me a little bit of curl. But I got nada. And even after I pumped the lashes with an eyelash curler a few times it was still didn’t a hold a “decent” curl.

Overall: I know this mascara isn’t new. It was reader requested by a lovely reader. Hey Claire! CoverGirl has since released LashBlast so LashExact is a bit on the “throwback” tip. But can I say something? Um….the wand, beautiful! You all know that I am a sucker for packaging so it was pleasant to have this baby girl in the mascara stash. As far as performance, hmm….it’s okay. I was able to achieve a good amount of volume. Length was pretty decent too. I didn’t get much of the flaky-flaky and was impressed with how well it stood up all day. Snagged this baby for about $7. Not too shabby.

Would I recommend it: Hmmmm….if you have something decent, stick with it. If you want to purchase this mascara just for experimental purposes, go for it. Otherwise….I say let it slide.

Brown and Blushin’ Series: Bronzers!

Time for another edition of Brown and Blushin’. I knowww, it’s been awhile since we’ve visisted this series, uh? Please excuse the delay. But this time around I have some real goodies for you in the “bronzer” department.

“What is a bronzer for anyway?”

Can yall believe I asked this question less than a year ago? Yes…your head newbie in charge was not familiar with bronzers. Don’t cyber-grill me…I’m learning, okay? And I know there are a few of you pretty people out there who don’t even own bronzers.

Neither did I until 3 months. HA!

Now I’m hooked. Bronzers are beautiful on brown skin. It gives us that “sun kissed” look. When lightly applied on the cheeks, it can bring out the cheekbones. When swiped under the brow, it can act as a pretty highlighter. When dapped on the apples of the cheeks, it provides just enough shimmer to make your pretty cheeks radiate with every smile.

I really love bronzers. Today I’m going to feature my 3 favorite (ha, and only) bronzers.

Are yall diggin’ my pretty set up? I try, I try.

So, I’ve put our 3 bronzers in categories.

For my sistas on a budget we have Tanfastic Bronzer by CoverGirl
For my girls who have a little extra pocket change we have Cargo’s Bronzer in Medium
…and for my ballin’ chicas (um, not me) we have Bobbi Brown’s Shimmbrick Compact in Bronze

CoverGirl’s Tanfastic Bronzer

For only $5.99, you have to be in love with this CoverGirl bronzer. It is highly pigmented so you won’t need much to achieve a nice but subtle glow. In fact, because it is so pigmented it is wonderful as an eyeshadow or brow bone color. I’m not gonna front–the brush uhh….the brush sucks. It is a a bit too stiff for initial application for me. But will it do the job for an on the go touch-up? Absolutely!

Cargo Cosmetic’s Bronzer-Medium

So maybe you got a little raise or Mommy dropped some funds in your account (dang, I miss those college years) and you want to splurge for the moment. Let me introduce you to this baby. I have the mini version but for $25 you can cop the award winning Cargo Cosmetic bronzer. Mad love to my sis, Amina at Coup de Coeur who got me hip to this beautiful tin canned wonder. The texture is so soft that it almost feels like “cream”. It isn’t as pigmented as CoverGirl’s so to get it show up you may have to apply a few swipes. It is absolutely radiating on my brown brown skin. And with the dose of Vitamin E this bronzer provides, I’m not only lookin’ good but keeping my skin healthy.

Bobbi Brown’s Shimmerbrick in Bronze

I’m not going to act like I can’t put some gas in my car, feed myself for a week or save for my upcoming travels. For $36, I could do one of the above. But if I “had it like that”, I would buy every single one of Bobbi Brown’s Shimmerbricks. They are just so dern pretty to look at. You can’t deny it….lemme bring the picture back.

Ohmiiiiigoodness. I mean look at that. Aside from this little brick going beautiful on the cheeks, it can also act as eyeshadows. You’ve got a lid color, crease color and a highlight right there in one palette. I don’t even travel with eyeshadows. I just take my Shimmerbrick and call it a day. I swear this thing has magic powers.

How do you apply it?

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way. I swipe my brush right down the middle and apply on the cheeks. It is divine.

I took some pictures of swatches but they pretty much all look the same because of the lighting. But a swatch of CoverGirl’s Tanfastic (that name is killing me, lol) on my inner arm should show you how pretty bronzers are…

This article at Black Women’s Web tells you a little bit more about bronzers.

So tell me….do you wear bronzers? Any recommendations? Your favorite? Your struggles? And suggestions for me? Shout out your favorite bronzer!
