Eyeliner Face-off!!

It’s that time again!!

Once upon a time here at Clumps of Mascara I had an eyeliner face-off. That’s right. I rounded up a few of my favorite eyeliners; both drugstore and higher end put them to the test to see which ones were the most durable.

Because you know they ALL claim to be smudge-proof and waterproof. Yeah yeah…

“That’s what they all saaay!”

I decided to do another face-off. I have six teams this time around.

Meet the teams!

(from left to right)
Team N.Y.C. Waterproof eyeliner pencil (sky high)
Team Maybelline Unstoppable (onyx)
Team Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye pencil (jet black)
Team Tarte Emphas Eyes high definition eye pencil (green)
Team Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eye pencils (covet)
Team MAC Pearlglide eye liner (rave)

Choose who you think we will now and see if you are right!

I took the liners through Three Rounds. Round I was Durability. I used them on the back side of one hand and left them there for a good 5 hours. Which liners made it the first round?

Team Maybelline and Team Tarte aren’t doing so hot this go round. Round II is the wet test. Which liners can last being submerged under water for a few seconds?

Team Rimmel is slowly sliding away this go round. Looks like Team N.Y.C., Urban Decay and MAC are holdin’ on! But will they last the final test? The ultimate tri-swatch test? I rubbed my fingers vigorously over the liners. You would never do this in real life but if the liners can stand up to this, they will really last on your eyes.

Would you have thought that Team N.Y.C. would win? Look how vibrant that blue is? Team Urb Dec and Team MAC didn’t do so bad either.

Can’t judge the liner by the price. For under $5 N.Y.C. really surprised me!

Rock on, N.Y.C. Cosmetics!

What are some of your favorite liners?

Eyeliner 102: Applying eyeliner on the waterline

This is probably one of the most requested uhhh….requests here at Clumps of Mascara. And I am oh so apologetic for just now getting to it, my darlings. Que pasa con me? I don’t know but I have finally gotten it together and I hope you enjoy both my photo and video tutorials of how to apply eyeliner on the waterline.

“B….are you kidding me? That’s like the easiest thing to do.”

Hmm mmm, for you it is. But not for everyone. Clumps of Mascara’s primary focus is on the newbies in the beauty and make-up world. This is one application that took me FOREVER to learn how to do. As I mentioned in the video, I was taught by my younger sisters how to apply eyeliner.

That’s right…my younger sisters. Since, then, however I have been all over it and it is very rare that you see me without it. I find that a nice smooth line of black eyeliner gives my eye shape and definition. I can see A HUGE difference when I wear eyeliner and when I don’t.

I mean….can’t you?

For the purpose of this tutorial I have used a bright eyeliner. I think that it will show up better in the pictures. Not to mention that Urban Decay’s 24/7 eye gliders are the BEST eyeliners that I have ever used.

Okay…ready, set:

Step 1

To keep my hand steady (my nerves are bad, yall) I rest my pinky by my nose. This helps gives me better control.

Step 2

Of course you can start anywhere, but I start from the outer. My eyes tend to water pretty easily and if I started in the inner, I’d be crying mid liner-application.

Step 3

Take small strokes. The great thing about color liners is that your line does not have to be perfect. If some of the liner gets on your lower lashes or even UNDER your waterline, that’s okay.

Step 4

Done!

I find that retractable liners are my favorite because they you a) don’t have to sharpen them and b) they don’t have the prickly edges. The smoother the pencil, the easier the application. If you find that you have to keep going back and forth on your eye, you may want to invest in a better pencil.

Of course, if you are new to this, it is going to take some time….as does everything in the make-up world. Practice makes perfect.

If you are you using two hands, be careful not to stretch your skin too much. Ahem…you don’t want pre-mature wrinkles, do you?

I think that I’ve covered anything but if there are any questions/comments or advice that you would like to drop for fellow Clumps of Mascara readers, please do not hesitate to do so!

Are you a liner wearer? Not so much? Or are you like me and feel like this is a MUST before you leave the house? What’s your eyeliner brand of choice?

Happy lining!

Eyeliner 101

By popular demand (okay, only 2 of yall asked, lol), I bring you some eyeliner tips. When I tell you there is no RIGHT way to achieve the pretty simple line on the waterline, I ain’t lyin. I used to have crazy thick lines. Don’t believe me?

Exhibit A (May ’08)….

Yes family, I have learned a thing or two and thought I’d share them with you.

First–don’t think that your line has be perfect.

My preference is a gel eyeliner with an angled brush because you can control the width of your line. Pencil and liquid liners don’t allow that.

You can start any where on your lid. For the pictures, I started in the corner and worked my way out. Normally I start in the center. Do whatever works for you.

I imagine as if I’m drawing at the base of my lashes—not ON my lid. Does that make sense?

I take small strokes. Trying to make a complete straight line is sooo hard for me. Shoot, I can’t even draw a straight line on paper.

At the end I simply turn my brush for a little extra “winged” look.

See!

But look closely at those mistakes…

A swip swip of a Q-tip dipped in make-up remover can clean that baby up.

Bam bam! The video actually does a lot better job at explaining how I do this.

Preguntas? Just let me know! What do you use to get the line on the waterline? Any tips or suggestions for me?
