Mascara Monday: Rimmel Volume Accelerator mascara

Anything that starts with Rimmel and ends in Accelerator gets me just a liiiittle excited. Remember Rimmel Lash Accelerator? That mascara not only held a special place in my heart because it was my 100th review but also because, um…it was an amazing mascara. And I do mean amazing! I loved it so much that I ended up giving away 10 of them.  Will its volume promising sister give me the same results?

Price: $8.99
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: Per the packaging…

The Truth: What the heck, Rimmel? This is not good. This isn’t good at all.

What I Loved About It: Even though the application sucked, it did okay with lasting all day.

What I Didn’t Like: The formula was far too watery.

Overall: Oh no. I didn’t want to NOT like this mascara. I had such high hopes considering Rimmel LASH Accelerator was one dynamite mascara. Surely the sequel would be just as good, right? Wrong. Even if it’s volume, length or both that you seek, you’re better off getting it from either Lash Accelerator or Extra WOW Lash mascaras. It’s just that simple. There were many attributes that made this mascara fail for me. First let’s get on the oopy goopy formula.

I found the formula to be extremely watery. I mean, reallllly watery. It was one of the most wateriest (wait, is that a word?) mascaras that I’ve ever used. Just like a mascara that has a thick formula, application can be extremely tricky and sometimes impossible. Watery mascaras can result in the formula seeping in your eyes, and if you have sensitive eyes, you may endure burning and/or eye irritation. Not cool, uh? Lucky I didn’t experience any of those, but I found it tough to apply the mascara. It took for ever to completely coat the lashes and when I did, I barely noticed. Then there was the tube.

‘elllo doooown thereeeee. I call the super large holes in mascaras the dreaded Black Abyss. This is what happens when there is no stopper in the packaging. This can be a chronic case in ALL Rimmel Volume Accelerator mascaras  or perhaps just the one that I have. Either way, it isn’t pleasant and it can be a bit on the unsanitary side as every time I dipped the wand in the tube, I had to remove it and widp off the residue. Yucky. And then there’s the wand…

It’s just…massive. Wands like these are just so unfriendly. Guys and gals with smaller lashes and lids will struggle with trying to get the inner corners. Every time I tried to apply it, I ended up getting a mess load of mascara on my lower lashline . I spent a lot of time cleaning up after application. And so even after you’ve gotten past the watery formula, Black Abyss and massive wand, the mascara won’t provide the kind of volume you would expect having gone through all of that work. It will look mediocre at best. And that boys and girls makes me sad. :(

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 2 coats

Do I recommend it?: Nope. If you’ve got a volume mascara that you already like, stick with that. Or, if you really want to try it, catch it when it’s on sale.

Have you tried any of the mascaras in the Accelerator line? What do you think about ‘em?

FOTD Friday: Blue Moon on the beach

So guess who actually put on makeup? Me! It’s been forever and I day since I put on eyeshadow. I don’t know what it is about makeup that has me obsessed  with writing and reading about it but not always wearing it. I mean, if you caught me in the streets, you wouldn’t even think I’ve been running a beauty blog for over 4 years. I am definitely not a walking advertisement for my blog. Which can be a good or bad thing.

Still. I don’t want to NOT wear makeup so often to the point where I forget how to actually apply it. That would be sad. And so I found these two shells on the beach and decided to scoop ‘em up.

Do you see them?

Look a little closer….

WOW! Don’t you wish every beach had eyeshadows poppin’ out of the sand?

I do. These pretty shells shadows are essence’s colour and shine eyeshadows. By the way, when I typed colour I actually said it in a British accent. 8)

Anywhoovers, at first swatch I found these shadows to be super pigmented and quite attractive.

(l-r) Blue Moon, Joyride to Jupiter

But just how well will they wear on the lid? I used Blue Moon and I didn’t have to do much work to get it to show up. It was anything but sheer. Not bad ‘at all. For the lippies, I used Stila Lipglaze in Foxy with MAC’s Vino lipliner.

Blu Moo shows up well in low light too.

You know you have too many tattoos when you spot one and say, “Oh wow, I forgot about you!” I spotted that tat on my wrist and memories flooded my mind.

Oh…before I float away again, Polo says hi.

He’s not too bad. When he’s not running around like a maniac, he is quite delightful. Remember, I’ve never had a pet so this owning a cat thing is major for me. Keep the advice comin’!

Oh! You can grab those essence eyeshadows from Ulta and Ulta.com for a smooth $2.99 a pop. Check out some more of my essence reviews. This is hands down one of my favorite drugstore brands.

Ciao for now, darlings. Enjoy the weekend!!

P.S.

You would think that I would have noticed my missing earring in those pictures. Nope. Didn’t notice until I posted these pics. I am such a clump of mascara. 8)

tarte’s Maracuja Creaseless Concealer really doesn’t crease!

Concealer. I love that stuff. I seriously want to hug the person or team of folx that invented concealer. Concealer is the reason why I’ve never felt the need to wear foundations. If you can find a good concealer that can cover up discoloration on a few spots on your face, who needs foundation?

Okay, let me back up…I don’t mean it like that. Foundations can be great. But for a gal who lives in super hot Florida with bipolar acne-prone skin, foundation is hardly ever my first pick when I’m beautifying in the morning. Concealers, however…I loves ‘em! I am an enormous fan CoverFXs concealer but lately I’ve been playing around with tarte’s Marajuca Creaseless Concealer.

Now before you get TOO excited, I must warn you that this concealer is currently only available through QVC by purchasing the tarte Glow Your Way To Gorgeous 8-pc Maracuja & Clay Collection. The collection retails for $54.96 which would normally have me screaming, “OMG, that’s SO much money…” but you get so much in that collection that is totally worth your pretty pennies. But let’s rap on the concealer…

For now, the concealer only comes in 3 shades; Medium, Tan and Deep. While I know it hasn’t officially been released by itself, I certainly hope that tarte gives us more shade options. I’d love to see something a little lighter than Medium and a shade darker than Deep. For reference, I am MAC NW45 and while the concealer works great for me under the eyes, me thinks my even more richly hued gals (thanks for that term, Sam Fine!) will be happier with something darker than Deep.  While most concealer-wearers wear for their concealer to be lighter than their complexions, I actually like for my concealers to be as close to my complexion as possible. Deep isn’t quite there for me.

Buuuut when it comes to brightening up the under-eye area, it does a phenomenal job. I don’t know if it’s age, stress or lack of sleep (probably all 3, ha!) but the area under my eyes have been darker than I’d like. A few dots of this concealer…

And a gentle sweep to blend it in a bit…

Equals concealed under the eye areas. I can dig it. I dusted my favorite and staple tarte bronzer all over and loved the results. I was happy to see that the Creaseless-ness of the concealer is dead on. I didn’t experience any creasing whatsoever. Mind you, this was with a good 12+ hours of wear time. Like all tarte products, this concealer is paraben-free and free of synthetic ingredients and fragrances. It also includes that wonderful maracuja oil and I can’t wait for it to be released as a solo product.

Do you think you’ll be purchasing a concealer from tarte when it gets released? Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes (LOL) mascara

I’ve been beyond excited about this mascara. Bee-yawn’ed. Mayelline’s Great Lash Lots of Lashes mascara excites me simply because I’ve found it to be the BEST of all of the Great Lash mascaras. I was sworn to secrecy to not say a word about this mascara for quite some time and now, I can finally let it out. Do you know how hard it is not say anything about a mascara that has a heart-shaped brush? Yeah. Not easy at all. Finally! The time has arrived. Brace yourself for the awesomeness of Great Lash LOL mascara.

Price: $6.49
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per press release

A Maybelline New York first, the heart-shaped elastomer brush simplifies the application process. In just one swipe, the great Little Grabber brush easily reaches the inner and outer corners of the eye, multiplying and building your lash look with no clumps. Just lots of clean, full lashes with no mess.

The Truth: Oh my words. This isn’t at all like the original Great Lash

What I Loved About It: That wand, baby! It’s one hot mama!

What I Didn’t Like: I hope you only like to apply 2-3 coats of mascara. Any more than that may send you to Clumps City.

Overall: I shall preface this by stating that I was never the biggest fan of the original Great Lash’s wand. I reviewed Great Lash back in 2008 and I don’t know if I was a total mascara reviewing newb back then or what, but despite my not putting it in the review, I was quite displeased with the Great Lash wand. You may say I’ve been spoiled by vibrating and spinning mascara wands to the point where I can’t appreciate a simple and no frills kind of wand, but no…the original Great Lash’s wand is just…meh. It is pretty standard in terms of mascara wands. And for some gals, that works. But in a secret hideaway world, there live us folx who desire MORE when it comes to mascara wands. We want a wand that’s easy to control, can not only sweep through our lashes with ease but also get into these inner corners. Guys and gals like us may be considered needy, but hey…we want what we want.

If the original Great Lash’s wand wasn’t enough for you, the new one is all that and a bag of Skittles. Just look how it compares to the original Great Lash.

Fantastical, right? I know, I know. It’s a beautiful. You’ll be happy to know that this heart-shaped wand (awww, Maybelline loves us) REALLY makes a difference in the overall outcome of the mascara’s performance. If mascara reviewing was math, I’d say that a mascara is made up of 4 parts. You’ve got the wand and the formula. The other two parts are brand and technique but we’ll talk about those later, class.

Having got the great wand part down, I was just wishing on a star that the formula was up to par as well. While the formula of Great Lash LOL is similar to the original Great Lash, LOL’s wand allowed me to pick up more mascara and apply more to the lashes. I was also able to get into those inner corners and lower lashes with no problems. Yes! That is what I’m talking about, Maybelline.

Some of us are picky mascara applicators. We don’t don’t feel as if we’ve done much if we don’t apply a ton of coats. If you’re that kind of applicator, Great Lash LOL may surprise you. Because of the wand’s girth, you shouldn’t need to apply more than 3 coats of mascara. And even that’s pushing it to the limit.  I love this aspect about this mascara. It doesn’t require a lot of fuss to get the job done. You apply one coat, let that dry, apply another coat and you’re done. Easy peasy! Even the Clumps kitten preferred Maybelline’s newest superstar mascara.

In terms of packaging, LOL is the same size and length as the original Great Lash.

From bare lashes to mascara coated lashes in under 3 minutes.

I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging which meant that mascara lasted for hours on end. I’m not the kind of gal that re-applies on the go. A mascara HAS to last all day for me. Great Lash LOL was quite the trooper.

Bare Lashes

Lashes with 3 Coats of mascara

This was such a special mascara to review because not only does this mascara’s release remind of  me of how iconic Maybelline is, but I was also one of the first to test Great Lash LOL out. Very cool. Very very cool.

Do I recommend it?: Um….yeahhhh!! Especially if you tried the original Great Lash and didn’t like the wand. This wand will totally win you over. I promise. Give it a try.

What do you think? Will you give this version of Great Lash a try?

Mascara Monday: tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart mascara

What don’t I love about tarte? From their lippies to their blushes and bronzers, tarte always knows how to make a gal feel special. Thing is, though, I’ve haven’t had much luck with their mascaras. They’ve always been average at best, for me.  Can this Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart mascara change my mind? Let’s see…

Price: $19 at Sephora and Sephora.com
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: Per Sephora.com

This amazing mascara delivers a 406% increase in lash volume and long-term reparative, rebuilding, and strengthening benefits with each swipe giving you instant results and better lash health. Just as it intuitively restores hydration and texture in skin, Amazonian clay intuitively hydrates and replenishes dry and brittle lashes to prevent fallout. High performance natural™Amazonian clay performs all day by absorbing oil to balance mascara and keep product in place for flake-free longer wear. It lends itself to deepen pure color pigments creating a volume-boosting formula with higher intensity and truer pure color. The result is healthier and more voluminous lashes that won’t ever flake or transfer, naturally. After daily wear, lashes are intact, healthier and stronger. This mascara prevents lash loss and promotes lash health.
The Truth: Hmm, I may be able to get down with this one.

What I Loved About It: The formula feels niiiiice. And the packaging. I mean, come on…it is hands down one of the best dressed mascaras that I’ve ever seen.

What I Didn’t Like: It wasn’t super volumizing and got a little clump-alicious around the second coat.

Overall: This may very well be my favorite tarte mascara. While it didn’t provide the kind of volume that I really wanted, it’s better than the other tarte mascaras that I’ve tried. So yippie to that! tarte’s been on this “amazonian clay” bandwagon for quite some time and while I can’t say I know everything about the clay’s properties, I do know one thing, it certainly enhances their products. Remember the Amazonian Clay blushes? Those totally rocked the house.

406% increase is a bit of a stretch. I only tested this mascara for a week so I can’t speak much on the long-term aspect. What I do know (and I’ve probably said this a dozen times) is that a mascara must be off the charts to encourage one to use it repeatedly to see results. That said, this mascara is definitely one that I could see myself using for weeks and months at a time. The wand makes application a cinch.

tarte has always been really good with wands so I certainly wasn’t worried. Mascara novices and professionals both won’t have any trouble using it. But like all tarte mascaras, if you’re looking for insane volume, you won’t find it. Which, for me, is okay sometimes. Most times I want lashes from here to Timbuktu. I’ve come to expect this from natural mascaras. What you don’t get when it comes to volume is a green mascara that is gentle on the eyes and without all of the synthetic ingredients and preservatives. Another issue I had with tarte’s mascaras is I felt as if they didn’t last as long. The Amazonian Clay mascara lasts significantly longer. Yaaaay! It may flake away by the end of the day, but if you don’t blame on running in the rain, working out and dumping your face in a bucket of water, we amazed at how well this does hold up. Like most natural mascaras, this kid won’t leave your lashes hard and brittle. Your lashes will be soft and wispy.

Do I recommend it?: Yep. It is definitely one of the better tarte mascaras. I’m impressed!

Any tarte lovers in the house? Have you tried this one yet?

Clinique’s 8 hr-lid smoothie feels amazing. But does it last?

Anything that has the word “smoothie” in it makes me ridiculously happy. Y’all know how much I loooove smothies, don’t you? It was my love for smoothies that had me all giddy about Clinique’s new Lid Smoothie Antioxidant 8-Hour Eye Colour. They are certainly cute enough to be all that and more, uh?

I love anything that allows me to look polished without doing too much work. Clinique describes these Lid Smoothies as…

“Creamy, crease-resistant eye colour wears for 8 hours. Instantly cools thanks to a unique applicator. Nourishing ingredients coax fine lid lines into a blanket of smoothness. Antioxidants help protect eye-area skin.” (source)

Okay, so I’m not having to battle fine lines (not yet, at least) but I could so using nourishing properties on the lids. Every little bit helps when your skin is drier than the Sahara in the middle of summer. More than the product itself, I absolutely loved the applicator of these Lid Smoothies.

What looks to be a simple spout that emits smoothie goodness is actually a chrome’d out spout. Is chrome’d out a word? Not exactly but  I’m a fan of creating new words as needed. 8) I absolutely love the metal applicator of these things. They feel fantastic on the lids. I’ve never seen anything like this and I can only hope that other brands pick up this idea and do something similar. I would also love to see these on lip balms. Ohmigoodness, can you imagine using a chrome’d out applicator to apply a gloss on a hot day? Cool, uh? So yes. Clinique gets major cool points from me. This applicator is a total winner. While I was only able to check out 5 Lid Smoothies, there are 12 of ‘em. Most shades seemed to be a bit pastel-y. Shades like Bit O’ Honey and Cashew Later are perfect as primers as their colors will work great for applying darker eyeshadow colors without changing the colors too much. Then you’ve got shades like Impromtu-Blue and Currant Affair  which will be perfect for layering blue and purple shadows on top of. They have the potential to bring out the color intensity and pay-off.

(from l-r)

Currant Affair, Born Freesia, Cute-cumber, Pinkgo Biloba, Bit O’ Honey

While I’ve got super oily lids, a good creamy eyeshadow base gives me the opportunity to be lazy enough to throw it on the lid and move on and chic enough look like I spent 20 minutes doing my eyes. They are perfect for busy beauties on the go. But unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get 8-hours of wear-time with these kids.

Which made me SO sad. I tried wearing these two ways; by themselves and with an eye shadow on top of them. Both tests resulted in creasing within a few hours. Boo and double boo. I was hoping for more longevity but nope, I didn’t get it. That said, while pretty and practical, these aren’t the best for ladies looking to wear their eyeshadow and have it not budge all day. I would also like to see more shades with different finishes. These may do 10x better in a matte finish. If you’re in the mood to try something new from Clinique and don’t require long-lasting eyeshadow bases and shadows, then give these a whirl. Otherwise, if you’re like me and have super oily lids, these smoothies may not be up your alley.

That’s the bad news. But the good news is, green smoothies CAN be up your alley. Woo hoo!

You can buy these 8-hr Lid Smoothies from Clinique.com and at Clinique counters for $19.50.

Maybelline’s new wicked cream pencil!

Yours truly needed a black eyeliner and can I be honest? I am quite the eyeliner snob. While I’ll try almost any brand, I really only stick with Urban Decay’s eyeliners for everyday use. They just haven’t failed me. But alas my laziness and cheapness has prevented me from driving to Sephora and spending almost $20 on said eyeliner. Instead, a recent stroll through Walgreens had me swooping up Maybelline’s newest eyeliner. After all, it was only a good $7 or so.

These kids come in 6 shades; ranging from a gray, to a purple, silver, gold, blue and black. I so meant to grab the black (Midnight Master) but ended up with the Gray (Coal Commander) instead. Opps. I suppose the gray cap was a ringer, uh? I know. I’m so smart.

So yeah, Coal Commander is little grayer than I’d like. See how much darker Urban Decay’s Zero is compared to Coal Commander?

I’m one of those Must.have.dark.eyes kinda gals. For no reason in particular. I just feel like the darker the line, the more awake and sultry I look. *bats lashes* Funny thing about this liner though…when I applied one eye with Coal Commander and the other with what was left of my Urban Decay Zero, from far away, I couldn’t tell which eye had which. Can you tell?

The right eye (your right) is rockin’ Coal Commander. So despite my “I wanted black, not gray.” whines, I wasn’t too disappointed at CC’s payoff on the waterline. As you get closer, you can see a bit of shimmery sparkles in there.

My poor eyes can only do matte liners on the waterline. Anything with a sparkle or shimmer to it has me itching like mad. Coal Commander was no exception. For the sake of beauty reviews, though, I kept the liner on just to see how well it would hold up throughout the day. It did…really well! It lasted from 7:00 a.m. through a hardcore lunch break workout and right on through post-work meetings. Impressive, uh? Not a bad eyeliner if you’re in the need for a new one. Because of my super sensitive waterline area, I won’t be using it there anymore but I’l definitely be applying it on the lower lashline.

Way to go, Maybelline. Way 2 go!! Get more deets about this liner on Maybelline’s website. Oh! And watch the vid too.

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Extra Lash Wow mascara

Well ‘ello there, Rimmel. It’s been quite a while since I’ve reviewed a mascara from you. I’ve got to keep my eyes on this brand. They always seem to launch mascaras without my knowing. Let’s see how this one fared.

Price: $7.99 at Walgreens…or any drugstore.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per packaging

The Truth: Hopin’ this mascara gives me some WOW factor.

What I Loved About It: It’s a great lightweight mascara. And I found it to be incredibly build-able. Be it 1 coat or 3 coats, it did a great job at not clumping.

What I Didn’t Like: It doesn’t wear as long as I would like it to and it tends to flake a bit.

Overall: Oh snap. Fo real, Rimmel? What an awesome mascara to add to your line-up. If you know me and my favorite mascaras, you know that Rimmel is one of my favorite drugstore mascaras. But it’s been awhile since they’ve impressed me. Extra Wow Lash totally won me back. I’ll admit–the wand did throw me off a bit. I’m not a fan of mascaras with large wands. They tend to be extra tricky…especially for folx who are already a bit shaky when it comes to applying mascara.

Oh. Perhaps my eyes were playing tricks on me because it looks as if Extra Wow was around the same size as Maybelline’s The Falsies mascara. The good news is, the bristles on this wand are incredible. What it has in size, it makes up in amazing bristles. Even the clumsiest mascara applier shouldn’t have too many problems applying. The formula is nice and consistent without being on the “super thick” side. Although, I really would not have minded if it was a little thicker. While Rimmel says that this is a volume mascara, I think it does a better job at being a separating and lengthening mascara. I would love to see a waterproof version of this. It flaked on me a bit throughout the day but I’m sure that could be alleviated with a waterproof formula mascara. Still. I am beyond in love with this mascara. Way to go, Rimmel!

Do I recommend it?: Hecks yah! And grab one for one of your favorite mascara lovin’ peeps too.

Another Rimmel win! Have you tried this mascara yet?
