Mascara Monday: NYX Voluptuous Lush Lashes mascara

NYX Voluptuous mascara

Look at that. NYX has done it again. They are giving us another collection of mascaras! I can’t decide if I like this or not. What do you think? Would you rather a brand release all of their mascara at one time or would you prefer them to sprinkle it throughout the year? I think I prefer the latter. I like little surprises. But, on a good side, NYX is like “Wait…what’s that you said, girlfriend? You need your mascara to do what? Boom. We got that.” And they do. They have mascaras for practically every need.

First up is Voluptuous…
NYX Lush Lashes Voluptuous
Thick in the waist, isn’t she?

Price: $7 from Ulta and  from NYXCosmetics.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Have them guessing if they’re real or not with this well endowed formula. The thick tapered brush builds volume and is also ideal for reaching even the tiniest lashes.” (source)

The Truth: The truth is I am dead at the words “well endowed” being used to describe mascara. I have literally passed away. My ghost has typed this post up.

What I Loved About It: With a wand this thick, you would expect the mascara to be on the messy side, but nope…the formula is lightweight and so applying is super easy.

What I Didn’t Like: While the formula and the wand play nicely together, the formula itself isn’t thick enough to really hold on to lashes and produce dramatic results.

Overall: I love me some NYX and I always look forward to the awesomeness that they ALWAYS bring with each new season. They never let me down and even when I come across a product that’s just so so, the next one blows me away. That said, perhaps my favorite aspect about this mascara is the wand.

Mascara wand

Wands like this, I think, are ideal for those who already have nice and thick lashes. Oh, and those folx whose lashes all go in the same direction? Yeah. This wand rocks. People who suffer from WLS (wonky lash syndrome) have a difficult time this wands like these because they are so large and in charge that they don’t really allow you to come through the lashes.  Separating? Forgot about it. Your lashes better already be in check because trying to comb through the lashes with a wand this big is tough stuff, bro. Honestly, NYX needs to write a book on how to the stopper and big mascara wands work because they, unlike so many other brands, have figured it out.

Mascara tube

The formula is nice and thick and applies easily. It also removes easily too and I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking throughout the day. But with a name like Voluptuous, I would expect a mascara with a thicker formula. A thicker formula would adhere to my lashes a bit better and give me some more Drag Queen realness. But nope. I didn’t get much of that.

And that makes me sad because y’all know how much I love Drag Queen lashes.

Do I recommend it?: It depends. If you have thick and plump lashes and you’re looking for a mascara that will coat your lashes nicely without providing clump, you’ll love this. If you are like me and have relatively puny lashes that you expect to like INSANELY awesome with a mascara who has the word voluptuous in its name, then nope…save you pennies for one of NYX’s better mascaras.

So. What time are you rollin’ with? Puny Lash Crew or Long Lash Entourage?

Mascara Monday: Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

It’s been a minute since I’ve reviewed a mascara from Hard Candy. I received this for review quite some time ago and I’ve been testing this baby for a good 2 weeks. Which, is now, starting to become my standard. I used to review a mascara for at least a week, but I don’t know…a lot of good (and bad) can happen in 2 weeks.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara wand

Such was the case with this mascara.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

Price: $6 from Walmart and Walmart.com
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Ginormous Volumizing Mascara infused with Growth Serum helps promote long-term lash growth, strength and vitality. Apply and watch as Ginormous plus Growth Serum stimulates your lashes to appear longer, fuller and stronger with regular use.” (source)

The Truth: Meh.

What I Loved About It: The wand works beautifully at really bringing out the lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: It didn’t volumize my lashes enough.

Overall: Well. I like Hard Candy. I really do. I think some of their polishes are freaking awesome and when it comes to budget makeup, you can always depend on them to step outside of the box and give us bold color and whatnot. They’ve got a slew of mascaras to pick from and any brand that gives me several mascaras to buy is alright with me.

This mascara not only promises to give crazy voluminous lashes but it is also supposed to help grow the lashes. I only reviewed this for 2 weeks, so I can’t speak much to that claim but the volumizing. It’s just okay. Really, it’s nothing monumental. And neither is the wand.

Mascara wand

I’m starting to prefer the plush brush wands over the plastic ones because you can really build up volume with them. So yes, for helping plump those lashes up, this wand works great. The formula is just so so. It wasn’t overly thick or thin but I felt like I had to apply a ton of coats for it to really show a lil’ somethin’. And said somethin’ was very minimal. Even after 3 coats, I didn’t feel as if I had much on my lashes. Some mascara lovers love the lightweight mascara feel and I do too, but only if my lashes look coated! And they just didn’t with this mascara. Boo. And double boo. But on a good note, I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking. Which is always a good thing. It’s an average mascara at best.

Do I recommend it?: I wouldn’t break my neck running to Walmart to get it but if you’re a lightweight mascara lover, you may appreciate it. However, if you’re like me and love those drag queen lashes, you may find this one a wee bit disappointing.umph!

Are you a fan of mascara with growth serums dumped in them?

Mascara Monday: POP Beauty No Clump Comb mascara

I’m trying to stay active with doing Mascara Monday posts because they are the real bread and buttah at Clumps of Mascara. Plus I feel so bad when I get emails from y’all that are like “I was soooo looking forward to a mascara review today. My life is now ruined because you didn’t post one. Gahhhh!!!”

Okay, they are never that dramatic but I still feel bad. I’m going to try crazy hard to keep cranking them out but do know that the blog may be running slowly in the next few weeks as I adjust to this new job. Oh yeah, and the holidays. .

What I definitely didn’t have to adjust to though, is POP Beauty’s No Clump Comb mascara. Just wait until you see the awesomeness that is the wand of this mascara. Just wait…

*squeals*

POPBeauty POP Beauty No Clump Comb mascara wand
Price: $18.50 from Beauty.com
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “Dramatically unique mascara for no clump application! Fine-toothed comb separates & extends individual lashes, leaving them inked out, volumized and curled. No-smudge, waterproof formula keeps lashes curled & gives this master mascara a 12h+ lash-life” (source)

The Truth: I heard birds singing.

What I Loved About It: The wand! Ooooh, the wand!

What I Didn’t Like: My lashes didn’t thicken up much with this but still…the wand!

Overall: I didn’t know much about this mascara before I tried it. I’ve heard of the brand POP Beauty but I hadn’t heard much about their mascaras. And then I received a sample of this in the mail. The packing was so so. The name didn’t make me want to do cartwheels and so I tossed it to the side for a few moons.

And then something told me to pick it up. And thats when I saw this…

POPBeauty POP Beauty No Clump Comb

Do you see that wand?! Do you see that? Look at it! It’s reminiscent of Maybelline’s Lash Stylist wand…one of my favorite mascaras ever! I reviewed that mascara sooooo long ago and it’s been a minute since I’ve thought about it. I don’t know why so many brands got rid of the beloved lash comb style wand but I’ve always liked them. Especially since I have crazy wonky and crazy lashes. Lash combs breeze right through my lashes and make everything better. They’re wonderful!

And it doesn’t matter if they don’t provide a ton of volume. It’s the combing through the lashes that really makes me jump for joy. So yes! I am so excited about this mascara. Did it provide added length and volume? No, not really. But did it comb my lashes to perfection and prep them to be mascara’d up by a mascara with a plush brush? YES!

Do I recommend it?: If you’re big on trying to get those lashes straight, you’ll love this mascara. Do know that you’ll probably have to follow up with your favorite volumizing mascara to get some extra umph!

Any other lash comb lovers out there? Where ya at? Come shout and jump for joy with me!

Mascara Monday: Eyeko Fat Brush mascara

It cracks me up when some makeup brands get all literal with their descriptions. Eyeko wasn’t like “Massive plumping brush”. They’re all like…”fat brush”. Ha! *snort* It’s the little things, y’all. The little things… Anyway, when I got this to review I just knew I had to share it with the blog fam!

EYEKO FAT BRUSH

And obviously this wand ain’t little. It’s fat. Didn’t you read the description?

Eyeko Fat Brush mascara

Price: $19 from Eyeko.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Our super-sized dense bristle brush coats lashes from root to tip building a volumised full lash fringe. Complimented by our fibre-enhanced Keratin formula to boost lashes with carbon black finish for visibly thicker and defined lashes. ” (source)

The Truth: The wand is definitely on the thick side.

What I Loved About It: The packaging. This is seriously the best mascara wand everrrrr!!!

What I Didn’t Like: While the formula was nice, the mascara’s performance overall was just…eh.

Overall: Man, I love me some Eyeko. It’s been over a year since I’ve tried their Skinny Brush Mascara and I’m trying to figure out what has taken me so long to play with their mascaras again. Eyeko is most known for their innovative mascara packaging but I’ve also heard that their eyeliners are amaziiiiiing.

Also amazing is this mascara’s wand…

Eyeko Fat Brush wand

Yes, it’s large and in charge (like me, boo!) but I like it. I’m a fan of larger mascara wands. I don’t need to use them often but when it comes to coating the lashes in just a few coats, large wands tend to get the job done. They also make it difficult to get in the inner corners and bottom lashes, but c’mon now, girlfriend. Stop being picky. You can have it all. Application is easy enough but my folx with smaller lids and lashes may run into some trouble.

The good news is, because it’s a fiber mascara, you can take small strokes up to the tips of your lashes for extra long. In fact, I found that to be more effective that attempting to get volume from sweeping the lashes at the base of my lashes. I found the formula to be very lightweight. It was memorable but it wasn’t terrible either.

I think I like the Skinny Brush mascara better because at least you have more control. I think my guys and girls with nice and thick lashes will like a mascara like this because it’ll take their lashes over the level. Those of us who already have puny lashes, however, we won’t see any dramatic differences. Womp.

But the mascara does have some other good specs – it’s paraben-free, contains conditioning keratin and it’s water-resistant.

Do I recommend it?: I’d say nay. I think you’re better off with the Skinny Brush mascara.

Soooo is anyone else in love with Eyeko’s packaging?

Let’s Talk A Little Bit About #MascaraProblems…

Mascara wands

This is a collaborative post is all about mascara. And its potential woes…

Mascara can be a wonderful thing – a desert island essential and the one thing most women won’t leave the house without – it makes us look awake and opens up our peepers to give us that pretty, girly look. However, mascara can also be the beauty bane of our lives and when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. Here are some of our most common #mascaraproblems…

The Eye Poke

You’ve slept in, you’re blurry eyed and you’re trying to balance throwing on some clothes with gulping down a scolding hot coffee and doing your makeup – it’s never going to end well. How it often does end, is with a mascara wand being prodded into your eyeball, blinding you for a good few minutes and consequently making you even later for work. Not ideal.

Over-Zealous Hairdressers

A trip to the hairdressers is supposed to be a relaxing experience, but often, that’s just not the case when you’re at the mercy of an over-zealous hair washer. Not only do you leave with an aching neck after being sat over one of those hellishly uncomfortable sinks, but you’re also subjected to several face-fulls of water as your hairdresser carelessly tries to rinse the conditioner from your locks. Ten minutes later you’re left with black smudges around your eyes and streaky foundation, and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. Hairdressers, take note: invest in more comfortable sink seats from Capital Hair & Beauty and be more careful in future!

The ‘Les Mis Effect’

Anybody who saw Les Miserables at the cinema will be well aware of what I’m talking about here. Going to see a sad film at the cinema will inevitably result in you walking out looking like a clown; tear-stained foundation and panda eyes, anyone? It’s happened to all of us, but seen as Les Mis has to be the biggest tear-jerker we’ve ever come across, we’re dubbing this the ‘Les Mis Effect’. Mascara lovers, be warned!

Won’t-Budge Waterproofs

On the other end of the spectrum, the problem isn’t getting some mascaras to stay on, but rather the issue lies with getting them off. Some waterproof mascaras are so determined never to run, smudge or budge, that they’re actually impossible to remove. You can try oils and all the best eye-makeup removers in the world, but you can never quite get it all off. In the process of trying though, you end up with sore eyes and a few less eyelashes than you had when you started. You just can’t win!

Mascara Monday: ELLIS FAAS mascara

Every now and then I run into a beauty brand that I’ve never heard of. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, I get embarrassed about it.

“How have you never heard of ELLIS FAAS, B?”

“I don’t know. I just haven’t…..”

I mean, yeah…I live under a rock but when you’ve been beauty blogging, er’body expects you know er’thing. So shoot me! I haven’t heard of ELLIS FAAS and didn’t until I got a sample of this mascara in my Makeup Show Orlando Blogger Preview bag. And whoooooa…

ELLIS VAAS mascaraI dun seen the light.

ELLIS VAAS

Price: $34 from Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: “A creamy mascara that perfectly coats, lengthens and separates each individual lash.” (source)

The Truth: I love this mascara!!

What I Loved About It: What an incredible wand! And the formula is just beautiiiiful!

What I Didn’t Like: Well, the price is pretty up there but hey, in some cases you get what you pay for. And this mascara is amazing!

Overall: I never got around to really exploring the ELLIS FAAS booth at The Makeup Show Orlando 2013 but I walked past it a few times. I am now kicking myself in the butt for it because if their mascara is this great, I can only imagine what everything else is like. I’m a drugstore lover at heart but sometimes higher end mascaras have a really different (and sometimes better) feel. This mascara just feels luxurious. And I love how simple and uncomplicated the wand is.

ELLIS VAAS mascara wand

I’m starting to prefer the traditional mascara brushes over the plastic wands but when it comes to brushes, I don’t want them huge. This wand is perfect. It is small enough to get in those inner corners but it is large enough to coat each and every lash. I’m thinking those with smaller lids and lashes won’t have any problem with getting this mascara to really coat all of those lashes. The long handle makes it easy to really get into those lashes.

And while I really love the wand my favorite aspect about it is the wonderful formula. This non-clumping, gel-like formula of love is so easy to apply to the lashes. I found that it was also buildable so whether you wanted just 1 coat or 10 coats, chances are you won’t run into any clumps. It isn’t exactly water-resistant so I’m not sure if I would wear this if I knew I was going to the beach but for day-to-day indoor use…it’s fantastic!

I also found the mascara to be very lightweight. I applied 3 coats and still didn’t feel any heaviness to my lashes. Wow.

Do I recommend it?: If you’ve got the pennies to spare, I think you’ll love this mascara. It’s just such a pleasure to use.

Am I the only loser who hasn’t heard of ELLIS FAAS? Please tell me I’m not the only one! The good news is, I’ve found an amazing mascara and I can’t wait to check out what other gorgeous thangs the brand has.

Mascara Monday: Rimmel Lash Accelerator Endless mascara

Rimmel Accelerator Endless

Once upon a time and many many moons ago, I fell in love with Rimmel’s Lash Acceleraor. I mean, I was head over heels in love with that mascara. For at least 6 months, every time someone asked me what my favorite mascara was I would blurt out “Rimmel Lash Accelerator!” with full fervor and conviction. I adored that mascara. And time has passed and it looks like Good ole’ Lash Accelerator has a sibling. I had high high hopes for Lash Accelerator Endless.

I mean, HIGH hopes!

Rimmel Accelerator Endless mascara

Price: $8.99 from CVS stores and CVS.com
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Our first ultra lengthening mascara that defies the laws of lash length defies limits, has a formula with Micro-Fibres and Grow-Lash Complex and grabs every lash for perfect separation with no clumps!” (source)

The Truth: In.Love

What I Loved About It: This mascara has such a nice and thick formula. One coat is really all I needed to get such luscious lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: Because of that thick formula, clumping is definitely bound to happen. And you know how I feel about about clumps of mascara.

Overall: The original Lash Accelerator mascara was launched over 3 years ago and while it has been a very long time since I’ve tried it, its awesomeness will forever be etched in my memory. You see, this mascara did amazing things. Its ability to provide length and volume was fantastic but it also had a really cool brush. I feel like Rimmel took that mascara, sent it to boot camp and the result is Lash Accelerator Endless. I love everything about the mascara. The wand is just…great!

Rimmel Accelerator Endless wand

I know old skool mascara heads often prefer the brush-style wand over the plastic wand and I do too sometimes but for this mascara, it works! The formula is a bit on the thicker side and a brush wand would really distribute more mascara than you’d like on your lashes. This plastic wand has such long and stiff bristles that it makes applying to the lashes ridiculously easy.

And because of that thick formula, you can really get away with applying just one coat. But of course I’m a rebel so I pushed it to two and even then, the mascara still applied with ease with only minimal clumping around the corners of my lashes. I really have no complaints about this mascara. It does everything you’d want your mascara to do. It applies with ease, it stays put all day and it gives you a great amount of volume and length. The claims say that with extended use it’ll help grow the lashes longer and of course I’ll never know that since I only test mascaras for a week at a time. But still..it’s a great incentive to keep using it!

I’m so glad to see that Rimmel did the Lash Accelerator name right. I am so in love with this baby!

Do I recommend it?: Heck yeah! And I’ll be recommending it as much as I recommended the previous Lash Accelerator.

I can’t believe I am just now reviewing this mascara but man, it really is as awesome as everyone has said. Have you tried it?

Mascara Monday: Ck One Color mascara

CK One mascara

I received a sample of this mascara in a bag of goodies from ULTA’s 21 Days of Beauty. There was a mean sale of this mascara and I was so glad to see it for so cheap because I’ve heard amazing things about it. It’s one of those mascaras that so many people told me to try but I just never got around to trying. Until this week. I was rummaging through mascaras to see which one I needed to show love to and this baby popped up. And here’s the coolest thing about it…it’s blue!

Yeah, I know. Most of you are like…”Blue mascara? That’s like so 80’s.” I know. But I still get excited about them!

Price: $18 from ULTA stores and ULTA.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “Mascara by ck one Color has an adjustable mascara brush that creates customized looks and simplifies application with a quick twist of the cap. Precision curved brush and patented lycra technology amplifies, shapes, and lifts every lash for maximum volume.” (source)

The Truth: I think I like it!

What I Loved About It: I don’t know if I buy the whole “adjustable wand” thing but it’s still a fantastic mascara.

What I Didn’t Like: Adjusting the wand is hard!

Overall: Now and days mascara brands have to jump through all kinds of hoops to be appealing to us beauty guys and girls. Simply being a mascara that promises volume and length ain’t enough anymore. Mascaras have to not only bring volume, length and curl but they must pay our bills and rock our babies to sleep too. I’m just sayin’. So yes, this mascara is like all of the others in that it makes a lot of claims but its claim to fame is the adjustable wand. The concept isn’t innovative but I’ve never seen one like this before. With a turn at the top of the mascara your wand goes from this…

CK One mascara wand 2

To this…

CK One mascara wand

I don’t know if my wand was messed up or not but I found it hard to turn it…

Turn mascara

The shorter and plumper wand is supposed to help with volume and by making the wand longer, it’s supposed to help with added length. Does it work? Meh. I suppose everyone’s experiences will be different but I found that I got decent volume and length with both versions of the wand.  I love the plastic bristles. They are fantastic at combing through the lashes.

I found the mascara to last around all day and I love the stunning blue. Of course, blue mascara on dark brown skin and dark eyes doesn’t look as blue on me as it would on gals of other complexions but whatever. I still like it. The formula is spot on too. It’s a really nice mascara and I’m not sure if the adjustable wand is necessary but it’s a nice little treat to have.

Especially if you’re going to spend $18 on a mascara.

Do I recommend it?: Yep! There’s a purple mascara in this line too. I think I gotta try that one!

What do you think? Does the adjustable wand seem like a gimmick or have you found it to be effective?
