Mascara Monday: Maybelline Volum’ Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Goodness gracious. Mascaras have the longest names these days. I mean, my goodness….! I guess when you’ve been making mascaras since 1914, you run out of short and to the point names. I get it. Maybelline has a new mascara on the block and while I am usually excited about their new mascaras, this one didn’t excite me too much at first glance. Which is shocking because I usually go gaga over dual-wand mascaras. Did application and performance of this baby change my mind?

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Nothing fancy in the packaging department…

Maybelline Falsies Big Eyes mascara

Price: $7.99 in drugstores
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Revolutionary dual-ended Mascara for 360° all around Lash Glam. Two brushes specifically designed for top and bottom lashes. Special quick-dry formula holds lashes in place” (source)

The Truth: I’ve had better Maybelline mascaras but this one isn’t too shabby.

What I Loved About It: I do love the option of having two wands. Not ideal for everyday use but if you’ve got the extra time, it works!

What I Didn’t Like: The volume power is just so so.

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara wands

Overall: This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a wand like this from Maybelline. Back in the day they had mascaras with dual wands. One wand was for a primer and the other was the actual mascara. Those were just so so. I actually like this mascara a little bit better because at least you can see the impact that is made. I like the idea of being able to have a mascara for those hard to get smaller lashes. Most wands make it difficult to do because the wands are large. The baby wand is fantastic for this purpose. Look how wittle she is…

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes skinny wand

I found that this wand is also great for grabbing the inner lashes too. And I suppose if you have super tiny lashes, they work for those too. The regular wand, however just isn’t plush enough to provide a ton of volume. I mean it does ohhhhkay.

Maybelline Volum' Express Falsies Big Eyes mascara larger wand

It’s a nice wand. I think it’s great for separating and attempting to straighten out wonky lashes but I didn’t find it to be insanely impactful for those seeking crazy huge lashes. If you’re desirous are defined lashes without much POW, this mascara will work. But if you’re like me and need for folx to see your lashes before they see you…well, you may be disappointed. On the good side, the formula was easy to apply and I didn’t get any clumps. Score! So yeah, it’s not my favorite mascara but hey, if you are serious about maintaing those bottom lashes, me thinks you’ll like this baby. I also found it to be pretty lightweight. No heavy lashes here. I had nice and fluffy lashes all day. But on the downside, fluffy lashes don’t stand up too well in Florida humidity.

Do I recommend it?: Meh. I think Maybelline has better mascaras in stores these days. Even the Rocket is better than this one.

Okay Maybelline mascara lovers, what did you think about this one?

Mascara Monday: Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Maximum Volume mascara

Guess how many mascaras I have formally reviewed? 200! Crazy ,right? I’ve probably tried more (not all of them make the cut) but I find it nutty that I’ve talked about, taken pictures of and tried at least 200 mascaras. Crazyyyyy. I was too lazy to think of some kind of creative giveaway but I do plan on doing something so stay tuned. In the meantime, let’s chit chat about this mascara…

Elizabeth Arden Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Maximum Volume mascara

And I know what you’re thinking…”Isn’t Elizabeth Arden for grandmas?” Heck no. It’s a brand that’s been around for quite some time but they ROCK in the cosmetics department. Remember that bronzer of theirs I reviewed? Anywho, I’m lovin’ this mascara that I got for reveiw…

Elizabeth Arden Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Maximum Volume mascara tube

Price: $19.50 at ElizabethArden.com or at Elizabeth Arden counters
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “This beauty award-winner dramatically thickens lashes as it separates and defines. Smudge-proof formula lasts all day.” (source)

The Truth: Oh, how I love the length and volumizing power of this mascara!

What I Loved About It: It’s got a great and easy to use wand.

What I Didn’t Like: The formula is so lightweight that it doesn’t seem to last all day.

Overall: I really wanted to make this mascara my 200th review because I think it’s special.I mean, how lame would it have been if that 200th mascara review was of a mascara that sucked? Yeah. This mascara rocks for several reasons. For one, the wand is niiiice.

Elizabeth Arden Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Maximum Volume mascara brush

Simple, yes, but I dig simple because I think we sometimes over complicate things like mascara wands. This is small enough to grab all of the lashes and plush enough to plump up the lashes. It works. It was tough to get the inner corners and bottom lashes but if you’re patient enough to work with it, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem with that.

My favorite aspect of this mascara is how wonderfully it volumizes. I applied to coats and got va va voom lashes. Lengthening was decent too. This is the perfect mascara for those who want volume and aren’t in need of a waterproof mascara. The formula is great but I found it to be extremely lightweight. Normally I wouldn’t complain about something like this but I need a mascara that lasts for quite some time since it’s almost summer time in humid Florida. That said, if you need super lush lashes and don’t plan on sweating vigorously, this may be a great mascara for you.

And even though it’s lightweight, I didn’t experience any clumps or smudging. So yay, Elizabeth Arden!

Mascara Monday: Milani Grandissimo Lashes mascara

Milani Grandissimo Incredible Volume mascara

Ya’ll know I love Milani. Like adore. A lot. Their mascaras have always just been okay though. Not good but not terrible either. I’ve been eyeing this one for a while so when it landed in my mailbox I got excited and wished for the best. Let’s see how we did…

Milani Grandissimo Lashes mascara

Price: $5.49 at drugstores and at Milani.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “Bigger is better! The mega volume brush creates a false lash effect. Dramatically enhances and thickens even the littlest lashes. Long-lasting, smear-proof, and non-clumping formula. Paraben-free. ” (source)

The Truth: Wowsers…this is definitely one of their better mascaras!

What I Loved About It: It’s got nice volume.

What I Didn’t Like: It has a large wand and may clump on you…

Overall: I first saw the wand on this mascara and just knew that she would be able to work some magic. And she didn’t let me down. Look at this baby…

Milani Grandissimo Lashes mascara wand

Not too shabby, uh? When you see a wand like this, you should realize 2 things. (1) A good amount of volume is coming your way and (2) so are clumps. It is almost inevitable. You just can’t avoid the clumps when you’ve got wands like these. To minimize them you can only apply one coat of mascara but if your goal is crazy awesome lashes, you’ll want to apply more mascara. That said, I REALLY dug this mascara. It’s average as far its appearance and she doesn’t tote any ah-mazing claims but it’s a fantastic mascara nonetheless. The wand is large but if you’ve got patience, you’ll find that it’s easy to breeze through the lashes.

The formula is great too. I didn’t find it to be too thick and it applied nicely to the lashes. I only applied 2 coats to my lashes and got a good amount of length and volume. It’s dark mascara so it’s perfect for a dramatic look. It does well with holding up throughout the day and I only found clumping to be a problem when trying to apply more than 2 coats. Way to go, Milani!

Ooooh Milani lovers, have you tried this one?

3 More Reasons To Love Urban Decay…their brushes!

First of all, why am I just now discovering that Urban Decay has amazing brushes? I feel like it’s a little known secret. Do people know how great these brushes are? I mean, my goodness…I feel like shouting it from the rooftops! But I’ll settle for shouting it on my blog instead. I got these for review and can’t stop rolling them over my face.

Urban Decay brushes

They are just so wooooonderful and soft and just…I mean, whoa! What’s to review? Why can’t I just say: “These are awesome. Buy them.”? And leave it at that?

Urban Decay Good Karma brushes in hand

I guess I COULD do that. But y’all would hate me for it, uh? Welp. Okay then…let’s do a quick review of each brush. And let’s start with that Good Karma Blush Brush.

Urban Decay Good Karma blush brush

Cost: $32 from Urban Decay.com.
Intended uses: To be used for applying blush, powders, bronzers and highlighters.
Is it effective?: Absolutely! What a wonderful brush to use daily. It feels incredibly soft and allows for great distribution right up under or on those cheekbones. And did I mention that she feels realllllly soft?

Good Karma Shading Brush

Urban Decay Good Karma shading brush

Cost: $26 at UrbanDecay.com.
Intended Uses: To assist with contouring and applying eyeshadow on the crease.
Is it effective?: This is the perfect brush to use for really blending out that crease. Even if you don’t have much of a crease or have to fake one. Ahem, like I do. I love that the brush is stiff enough to really GET in the crease but it’s soft enough to eyeshadow a nice airbrushed look.

Good Karma Shadow Brush

Urban Decay Good Karma Shadow brush

Cost: $26 at UrbanDecay.com
Intended Uses: To apply eyeshadow of course, silly!
Is it effective?: Yep! But I like this more for applying powder/loose eyeshadows. This brush dipped in whatever you use to make your loose shadows creamy and then applied to the lid is glorious. It’s a stiffer brush so I didn’t find it as useful when applying pan eyeshadows.

Reasons #493, #494 and #495 to love Urban Decay. That is all.

Have you tried any UD brushes?

Mascara Monday: Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan mascara

Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara

I am so in love with Josie Maran’s cosmetics. She rules. In fact, she rules so much I can’t even watch QVC because if she’s on I WILL buy something. There is no “if” about it. So yeah. I run far away from the TV if I know that she’s going to be on. I’ve finally gotten around to trying out her mascara. I got this one for review so let’s see if it was as good as everything else she’s got…

Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara tube

Price: $22 from Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “This mascara’s patented Triple V Brush delivery system coats lashes one luxurious layer at a time for full, long-wearing, clump-free, water-resistant definition. The rich, hydrating formula evenly builds thickness and smoothness, delivering a full fringe of blacker-than-black lashes with dewy shine. This natural and exclusive formula dries quickly without smearing, smudging, clumping, or flaking. An infusion of nourishing, protein-rich Argan Oil conditions and supports hair growth for lush, supple, healthy lashes.” (source)

The Truth: I liked it! I really liked it!

What I Loved About It: I got a nice amount of volume.

What I Didn’t Like: It was just a bit flaky. Pretty common for natural mascaras though.

Overall: I truly stan for Josie Maran products. And I’ve been doing so since I tried my first oil from her. It’s a stellar brand. Especially for my fellow natural lovin’ guys and girls out there. Natural mascaras are tough to love, though. Sure they omit the nasties but they aren’t so hot on the longevity tip. And let’s face it, I don’t care what your mascara preferences are, you definitely want it to last on the eyes for as long as possible. Natural mascaras aren’t so good in that department.

But first things first, the wand…

Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara brush

It’s a typical wand that is great for volumizing. It is large and plush and may be a bit intimidating to those who aren’t so used to larger wands. There wasn’t much of a stopper in the tube so when I pulled out the wand each time I endured a ton of mascara on the wand.

Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara brush and tube

Yes, I hate when this happens. It isn’t much to remove it but it’s still an extra step that I don’t always like to take. However, this mascara is kinda worth the trouble. I really like the volumizing action I got from this baby. Using only 2 coats I got a really nice set of lashes. With very little effort. My lashes were lush, dark and fabulous, darling. The downfall of course is the flakiness I ended up getting hours after application. And by hours I mean, only a good 4-5 hours of wear. This isn’t the kind of mascara you can rock through out the night. Nope, she just won’t last on you. And it’s sad because it really is a great mascara. Like I mentioned, it’s a common issue with natural mascaras. But regardless, I love the effect that this mascara gave me. It’s definitely a mascara I’d hold on to for short term dramatic wear.

Bare Lashes

Do I recommend it?: Sure! Especially if you’re a Josie Maran fan who doesn’t need a mascara to last hours at a time.

Where are my JM guys and girls at? Have you tried this mascara? Am I the only one that notices that natural mascaras don’t last as long throughout the day?

Got tired eyes? Yeah well, join the club. Let’s fix ‘em together!

“Relax.” they say. “Get some time to yourself.” they utter. Hmph. Whatever. My darling child is a special gift and I love her more than life itself but babies are some selfish creatures, man. They don’t give a darn about your beauty blogging schedule. Which is why it has taken me so long to review this amazing Ultra Hydration Eye Mask Duo from Le Metier de Beaute. I got a pair for review awhile back and I just got around to trying them out.

Le Metier de Beaute Hydrating Mask Duo

First of all, LMdB is a luxury brand. You know this, right? I’ve reviewed the brand several times before and their products are far from cheap. But if you’re ever in the mood to treat yourself to something cosmetically decadent, well then, I’m suggesting LMdB. This eye mask duo is wooooonderful.

Le Metier de Beaute Hydrating Mask Duo up close

I mean, I knew they’d probably feel nice but no, they REALLY feel nice. According to LMdB these single-use translucent seaweed-based masks have several things they’ll do for the skin under the eyes. Aaaand, here’s a list…

-They instantly cool on contact.
-They re-energize the area under the eyes.
-They reduce under eye redness.
-They diminish puffiness and the look of dark circles.
-They automatically pay back your student loans.

…nah, I’m just kidding about that last part. Just making sure you were paying attention. Ha! But seriously, they are some kind of awesome. I like that you don’t have to lay down while wearing them. And they really do create a second skin.

Le Metier de Beaute Hydrating Mask Duo on eyes

Yes, girl. They feel just marvelouuuus! I am a believer. And I wish these were waiting for me each and every night. Hey! A girl can dream, right?

Price: $150 for a pair of 8
Availability: You can get them from Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com.
Is it worth the money?: I’m not sure they sell these individually (bummer) and a box is so expensive each time you needed the under-eye pampering. They’re worth the price but I’m sure there are other ways you can pamper yourself.

Do you take care of the skin under your eyes? You can be honest… Okay, I’ll start. I don’t but will dedicate more time to doing so.

Mascara Monday: Mary Kay Lash Love mascara

Mary Kay Lash Love mascara

Where are my Mary Kay girls at? This is a highly requested mascara and I am so sorry that I am just now getting the opportunity to review it. I received this mascara for review and even before then so many of my gal pals were telling me how awesome this mascara is how it’s a travesty that I haven’t reviewed it yet. I know, I know. Well, here we goooo!

Price: $15 from MaryKay.com and from a Mary Kay consultant
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Love your lashes with the mascara that defines, defends and delivers four times the volume while looking naturally flawless, soft and healthy. The flexible, sculpted brush separates and coats lashes.” (source)

The Truth: I found the volume to be just okay, but the length was niiiiice.

What I Loved About It: Um yeah. The length.

What I Didn’t Like: It was just a wee bit smudge-y for my liking.

Overall: I don’t try many Mary Kay products. Mainly because I kinda forget about the brand since they aren’t sold at Sephora, department stores or the drugstores. I know. Bad B. I should really be more hip to Mary Kay products because they really have some pretty awesome things. This mascara isn’t bad at all. In fact, I found myself wearing it weeks after I reviewed it. And that never happens.

I think most of the reason why it’s so awesome is because of the wand.

Mary Kay Lash Love mascara brush

Even if you hate plastic wands, you HAVE to like this one. It’s got those nice and stiff bristles that are great at catching each and every lash. Crazy and wonky lashes like mine don’t stand a chance against this kind of wand. I loved how it combed straight through my lashes and helped elongate the lashes.

Volume-wise, I didn’t get much plumping but I think the wand is made more for lengthening than for volumizing. And I’m okay with that since the lengthening action was decent. The downfall to this mascara? I found it smudged a bit throughout the day. A top coat mascara like Anastasia Lash Genius should set it straight though. Otherwise, it’s  a decent mascara. The formula was easy to work with and I didn’t experience any clumps. So yeah, the smudging sucks but the mascara is still worth a try.

Do I recommend it?: If you’re a Mary Kay fan and/or really want to try a good lengthening mascara, I say give this one a whirl.

Any Mary Kay girls in the house? What do you think about this mascara?

Mascara Monday: Revlon Lash Potion by Grow Luscious mascara

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

A new Revlon mascara!! It is a well known Clumps of Mascara fact that I’ve always had issues with Revlon mascaras. And I’m not the only one either. Many of you have had your issues with the brand’s mascaras. The past few, however, have been decent and despite not being an insane fan of the original Grow Luscious mascara, I was kinda excited to try this one that I received for review.

And I mean, look at the packaging!

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Talk about ‘Best Dressed Mascara’, uh? Let’s hope she lives up to her fabulousness!

Price: $7.99 at drug and mass retailers nationwide and from CVS, of course!
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Revlon Lash Potion drenches lashes with a potion of strengthening proteins for captivating volume and length. Lash Potion works to nourish lashes so they reach their fullest potential—looking lush, long and lustrous. The Lash Potion ‘Illusionist Wand’ has wide grooves to instantly coat lashes in formula for maximum volume and triple brushes to comb through for clump-free length – in just one swipe! There are no smoke and mirrors here – just enviable long, voluminous lashes.” (per press release)

The Truth: Not bad. Could be better though.

What I Loved About It: The volume is niiiice. It’s been awhile since I’ve tried a mascara with a good amount of volume. This one has it!

What I Didn’t Like: Revlon still can’t get the whole mascara packaging thing down right. Ugh. It’s so annoying.

Overall: I really do have a love/hate relationship with Revlon. I’ve always thought that their mascaras had so much potential but there was always something that stopped them from being awesome. It usually isn’t their wands because the wands are pretty awesome. I like this one a lot!

mascara wand

Yeah, it’s pretty massive but it’s a fantastic wand for volumizing. And boy does it really bring those lashes out there! If you’ve got super tiny lids or lashes you may struggle with this one a bit. And not because the wand is so huge. But because of that huge mascara hole…

mascara tube

This is so common in Revlon’s mascaras that I’ve given it a name. I’ve named it the Black Abyss. I don’t know why this feature keeps popping up in their mascaras. It does nothing but cover their great brushes with a ton of mascara goop. And it takes time to remove said goop. Time that many don’t have, well…time for. That said – as awesome as the wand is, the Black Abyss gets in the way a bit.

But if you’ve managed to remove the excess goop and apply the mascara to your eyes you’ll achieve a wonderful set of lashes. I was amazed at what this mascara could do with only 1 coat. Pretty spectacular! The formula is pretty thick so it’s best to work quickly and settle with only 2 coats of mascara if you can help it. If you go for a third you may end up with clumps of mascara. Hehe. See what I did there?

There is a bit of downfall to this mascara though. I found that it tends to flake over time. It had a hard time lasting throughout an 8 hour work day. I would catch it flaking away a few hours later. Ugh. And we all know how much I hate flaking mascaras. The best way to prevent this is to apply as few coats as possible. So instead of 2, I found myself applying just 1 coat and I didn’t have the problem as much. But it kinda sucks because while my lashes looked great with 1 coat, they looked amaziiiiing with 2. *sigh*

I’m guessing the waterproof version of this should straighten that out a bit. I can’t speak on if the mascara will help thicken and strengthen lashes over time since I’ve only been testing it for a week. And as gorgeous as the packaging is, that dress of hers is very fragile. She got all scrapped up in my purse.

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Boo.

Bare Lashes

Mascara on eyes 2

Mascara on Eyes 1

Do I recommend it?: I do! But only if you’re in the market for a volumizing mascara. I think it’s great for short term wear if you don’t mind messing around with the excess mascara on the wand. And of course if you buy this mascara from CVS/pharmacy, it’s applicable for those awesome Extrabucks Rewards.

So Revlon still hasn’t fixed the “lack of a stopper” issue in their mascaras. Womp. But this is still a stellar mascara.
