Makeup Wars: Anastasia Beverly Hills Maya Mia palette review + tutorial

This is a very special Makeup Wars because a few of us gals were so graciously sent the Anastasia Beverly Hills Maya Mia palette to review. I haven’t been keeping up with the awesome things that Ana has goin’ on and uh…talk about a mistake. This palette has reignited the admiration that I have for the brand.

Anastasia Maya Mia palette

Designed by blogger and makeup artist Maya Janeska. This East African beauty is not only stunning but puts out amaziiiiing tutorials and has a jumpin’ Instagram channel. She collaborated with Anastasia Beverly Hills to put together a fantastic palette.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Maya Mia palette

It really is unlike any eyeshadow palette that I’ve seen before because within the 10 shadows, you’ve got two pops of color – including that very bright Aqua!

What a nice little surprise, right? I’ve found that the Aqua works very nicely on the lid and even used as a liner on the waterline. Included with the palette are 5 Get The Look cards . Maya has given us step-by-step instructions on how to achieve various looks. Of course I fell in love with the look that used that stunning Aqua. I’m lovin’ how the cards tell you at the top which shadows you’ll be using.

Swatch-wise, I would have loved for these to be more intense.

Anastasia Maya Mia palette swatches

They pop well on my skin but if we could have taken the intensity level up a bit more, I would have been a happy girl. And then there’s a nice dual-sided brush!

But despite that, this palette inspired me to do a tutorial which, ohmigosh y’all…I haven’t done in years! It is such a challenge to do a tutorial under 5 minutes. My girl Phyrra has perfected this so until I grill how she does her tutorials, you lovely people will have to deal with my choppy tutorials. And bad brows. Because yeah. My brows look baaaad in that video. Oh well.

You can get this palette from ULTA.com for an easy $29.

Sleek Makeup in the House!

Okay, where have I been? Why haven’ y’all told me to buy Sleek Makeup yearssss ago? I mean, seriously. I’ve known about the brand for a while but no one told me how great they were. Yes, I saw the swatches online and lusted after their eye shadow palettes but I never made the jump.

Sleek Makeup

Until one fateful evening on Twitter. I was chatting with beauty blogger friends and before I knew it, it was midnight and I was ordering makeup. I blame them. Beauty bloggin’ peer pressure.

Sleek Makeup products
I also thank them because everything is absolutely goooorgeous. I didn’t want to spend too much money and honestly, that’s easy to do considering their prices are so affordable. Since I did a video feature of the things that I hauled, this post will mostly be full of pretty pictures. You’ll have to watch the video to get my thoughts on everything. But I can tell you this…I will be purchasing more Sleek. And soon.

Sleek Bronze Block

Bronze Block in Dark for $11.49. This was a total impulse buy because I’m not really sure how I’m going to use this.

Sleek Mystic

Sleek Loved Up and Mystic

Lipsticks in Loved Up and Mystic. They are  $7.49 each.

Sleek Life's A Peach

Life’s a Peach blush for $6.99. I really wanted to do something different in my blush game. I’ve never owned a peach blush and I didn’t see them as flattering on my warmer skin but I’m going to push it to the limits and see if I can make it work.

Sleek iDivine Ulta Matte V2 palette

iDivine Ulta Matte V2 palette swatches

iDivine Ulta Matte V2 palette. This baby went for $11.99 and of course I didn’t need any more palettes but this was just calling my name. I saw swatches of it and HAD to have it.

Not pictured is the Hide It Concealer that I got for $4.99 and apparently someone hid it because I can’t find it! Haha, see what I did there? I’ve got a video coming soon about this line so stay tuned for that! I can tell you now…I am an enormous fan and will definitely be ordering from them again.

Have you ever tried anything from Sleek? What should I scoop up next?

Come oooon, Fall 2014. NARS has some fantastic things for us!

NARS Fall

I’m kinda ready for FAll. Yes, I know this is a little crazy considering Summer just started but quite frankly, I can’t enjoy summer. It’s just TOO hot, yo. That and the daily thunderstorms are seriously raining on my parade. Literally. I’ve got another reason to look forward to cooler weather and vampy shades. NARS Fall 2014 Fall collection Night Caller is seriously up my alley. Here’s what they are givin’ us…

Eyeshadow Duos
Jardin Perdu Duo Eyeshadow ($35) – (L) metallic dove grey, (R) metallic amethyst
Dolomites Duo Eyeshadow ($35) – (L) shiny rose quartz, (R) chocolate

Eyeliners
Night Flight ($24) – black with cobalt blue pearl
Night Bird Eyeliner – black with purple pearl
Night Clubbing Eyeliner – black with gold pearl

That blush and those lip pencils are miiiiiine!

LORAC Pro Palette 2…love, love LOVE!

LORAC Pro Palette 2

I know. That’s pretty much the craziest blog title ever but hey, sometimes keepin’ it simple is easiest. And simply put, I am so in love with LORAC’s Pro Palette 2. I did a post of their original PRO Palette back in 2012 and yes, while I still think it was great, LORAC is giving us richer shades and spectacular eyeshadow formula.

LORAC Pro Palette 2 outside

We’re seeing similar shades from the previous palettes but I am loving the the inclusion of the rich Navy and Plum. Seems simple but I don’t know, those additions alone, to me make the palette far more smokey eye friendly.

Closer looks of the shades…

Comparisons of the 2 palettes with PRO 2 palette on top…

LORAC Pro palettes

The palette is available for purchase at Ulta.com and I’m pretty sure it will head to the physical stores soon and maybe Sephora? Either way, I think it’ll be a big hit for those that don’t have the original PRO palette. Is it a necessity for those of us that already have that one? Well, c’mon…I’m a beauty blogger.

LORAC Pro Palette 2 packaging

I can find ways to justify many purchases. But in all seriousness, I think this palette is definitely more versatile than the first PRO palette so yeah…you beautiful people can draw your own conclusions.

LORAC Pro Palette 2 on brown girl

Not a bad look using Cool Gray a base, right? I did a video of this baby. I am still so impressed with myself, y’all. Last year I think I did one…maybe TWO videos. This year already I’ve done NINE! Heyyyyy!

Think you’ll grab this palette or naw?

Get Some Physicians Formula In Your Life!

Hey girls, hey! So about that #PFHealthyGlamour Twitter party last week… Did you go? I did and oh my heavens, if that party was in a real club, the roof would have been on fire. I’m not even kiddin’. We would have all been bumping into each other and spilling our drinks on strangers. It was a packed house but what an awesome party it was.

Physicians Formula BB powder

Tips from Joanna were flowin’ left and right and many lucky ladies left $50 richer. It was a grand time. Through Beauty Stat, I got the opportunity to work with Physicians Formula and I was sent a whole box of awesome goodies.

Physicians Formula products

I am no stranger to the brand. In fact, I’ve reviewed several of their mascaras, some of their lippies and their blushes. I do think they could plump up their availability of darker shades. But hey, I’m confident that in the next few years, we’ll see more “true” darker hues from them. In the meantime, I am head over heels in love with their Nude Wear blushes.

Physicans Formula Nude Wear blush

Physicians Formula Nude Wear

They call it “Nude Wear” because after you’ve applied these blushes, you can barely spot them on your cheeks. You’re left with a very subtle and beautiful glow. And yes, girl…I can attest to this.

Physicians Formula blush

They’ve got a similar effect in a palette form that can be used on both the face and eyes.

Physicians Formula eyeshadow palette

This Warm Nude Shimmer Strips All-In-1 Custom Palette may be a bit too shimmery for the office, but it is fantastic for date night or Girl’s Night Out.

And for my girls who like intense and sultry eyes, I’m thinkin’ you’ll love the Sexy Booster Ooh La La Eyes Trio.

Included is an eyeliner pencil, felt-tip eyeliner and kohl eyeliner. When layered with the Va Va Voom Volume mascara, this results in the perfect sexy eye look…

Too Faced Summer Sexy Shadow Collection

Soooo apparently Summer 2013 started right before July. Has it always been that way? I don’t know. When you live in a state where there are two seasons (hot and hotter), it seems like summer is alllll the time. I’m a lover of summer collections. They are always so fun and cheerful. I got this Too Faced Summer Sexy Shadow Collection to review and it just screams summmahhhhh!

Too Faced Summer Eye 2013 Summer Sexy Shadow Collection

And what’s inside is kinda awesome too…

Summer Eye 2013 Summer Shadow Collection

This tin case contains 9 exclusive ‘resort-inspired’ eye shadows. Too Faced knows how to do a good eye shadow so I just knew the quality of this was going to be on point. And of course it didn’t disappoint. First, let’s talk about these 3 shadows to the left.

Too Faced Peach Fuzz

They’re gorge! They can probably be used as highlighters and blushes but with a very light hand. I found Peach Fuzz to be super glittery but I think it would work well under the brow bone. Or even for illuminating the skin if you like glittah.

Too Faced Sunbeam

Shadow-wise, I found that they were all pretty flattering.

My descriptions of ‘em:
Plumeria – A frosty cotton candy pink.
Coral Crush – a shimmery rose coral.
Mermaid – a shinning sea blue with shimmer.
Cocoa Beach – a bronzed mauve with gold shimmer.
Chocolate Sun – a milk chocolate with subtle gold shimmer.
Toasted Coconut – a toasted gray.

Each shadow (with the exception) of Tosted Coconut has some bit of shimmer it. I found that they all had nice pigmentation to them but if you’re looking to do some kind of smokey eye, you would probably need to use a shadow that isn’t in this palette.

Not too shabby for $36 and it is definitely a palette that represents summer. Too Faced rocks the house…again!

Cargo Cosmetics is some kind of awesome…

So like a realllllllyyyyy long long loooong time ago, I was all obsessed with the brand CARGO. Some people are obsessed with shoes, some folx like hats (you know, like the ones people rock at the Kentucky Derby when they bet on horses), I obsess over cosmetics. Obviously. I’m not sure what happened but my love affair with them just…ended. Don’t you hate when that happens? It’s like one minute you’ll be obsessed with a song and then the next, you’re just like…over it. Okay, so fast forward a few years and CARGO and I are friendly again thanks to these press samples being sent to me. Yaaaayyyy!!!!

DSC_6560

CARGO is  currently sold in Ulta and at cargocosmetics.com, but I’m almost positive that they used to be sold in Sephora. I wish they’d go back to good ole’ Seph. But whatever – I’m just happy that I can buy them whenever now because it seemed to be that they weren’t so widely available years ago.

One of my faaaavorie things about the brand is their AMAZING bronzers. Mark my words – CARGO rules in the bronzer department. This Beach Blush in Echo Beach is absolutely lovely.

Don’t be silly and try to use each individual  color. No no, loves. Simply swirl a brush in there and apply it all over the cheeks.

Yep, that’s Elle’s little head at my chin. I’m a multi-tasking mama! Packing-wise, I love these bronzers but it’s really the longevity that make them stellar. I can use this bronzer on top of a powder and it will last a good 8 hours. Fo reals!

And then there’s the Essential Palette…

DSC_6599

DSC_6603

Who knew CARGO did eyeshadows so well? Priced well at $32, this palette in Warm Neutral is the perfeeeect everyday palette. I love how all of the shadows are matte but they weren’t chalky. In fact, the only issue I had was with the Browbone color. It was a bit frostier than I would have liked. I managed to tone it down a bit using a primer but by itself…wowsers.

Lippy-wise, I was sent the darling coral and shimmery darling.

DSC_6597

DSC_6598

A simple gloss, yes but it’s dainty and would probably be fantastic over a highly pigmented lipstick. It’s the kind of gloss that is appropriate for outdoor fancy affairs but it also works well if you need something subtle but nice.

I am beyond impressed with what CARGO has been doing lately. I’ve got some mascaras of theirs that I can’t wait to review so stay tuned for those reviews. Any CARGO lovers in the house? Have you ever tried the brand?
