50 million pound challenge: Green smoothies are my BFF

I can’t tell y’all how many emails I get about green smoothies. I am SO glad to see this yummy drink become more and more popular. So here it is….the All About Green Smoothies post.

Q: What made you want to start drinking green smoothies?
A: During the summer of 2009 I wanted to try something new diet-wise. I really wanted to start falling in love with vegetables again and incorporate them more in my diet. Sooo…I went on a raw food diet and loved it. I read about green smoothies and fell in love. I love that they are cheap, portable, easy to make, delicious AND provide me more than the daily recommended amount of greens I need.

Q: What makes these things so healthy for you?
A: You’re kidding, right? Green smoothies are nothing but fruits and vegetables–the two kinds of food that most of us don’t eat enough of. I could talk all day about how the health benefits of green smoothies, but this article sums it all up!

Q: Wait…you mean it has vegetables in it? Eww! That means it tastes gross, right?
A: Nope. Thanks to naturally sweet fruits, you really can’t even taste the greens. Some people get turned off by the green color and I don’t know why. Green is beautiful!

Q: How often can you drink them?
A: I drink at least 40 oz of green smoothie a day. My body literally craves them. I put them in washable bottles and sip them in between meals. They are also excellent for breakfast, after a work-out and as a dessert. Oh…and I love them as energy boosters.

Q: Do you need a super pricey and amazingly awesome blender like a VitaMix?
A: Heck no! All of my blenders have been under $50. I’ve gone through 3 in about a year so I should probably invest in a top of the line blender. However…my cheap-self won’t allow me to make the purchase. :( No worries. My current Black & Decker Cyclone is holdin’ it down!

See how it got its name?

Q: How do you make a green smoothie?
A: I knew you’d ask that!

First, do know that there are no rules to making these babies. No measuring is needed. Mix this and add that and you’ve got a green smoothie .Ice and water are the foundation to my green smoothies. Not to mention without them you’ll be drinking what tastes like pureed grass. Trust me on this. And of course you need GREENS. Like kale, for example.

Kale is typically used as a garnish but when blended it provides an insane amount of Vitamin K. I use this and spinach the most. You can also use lettuce, parsley and chard. I tried collard greens once but I wouldn’t recommend that to anyone. *gags*

And then you need fruits!

I ALWAYS add a banana in my smoothies. They seem to do the best job at cutting the veggie taste. Be creative with your fruits. You can use anything in fresh or frozen form. Very rarely do I purchase expensive behind fruits from grocery stores. I like to support fresh fruit markets and go to one every Sunday after church. However, because of the season my market is on hiatus and I’m left to buying fruits from the grocery store. Do you need organic fruits? I guess it’s a personal thing. I always get organic apples because apples are more prone to getting zapped with pesticides with their permeable skin and all. But when it comes to bananas, berries, etc…I say my grace and move on.

Got milk?

I don’t add any milks to my smoothies unless I am making them for a dessert or want a little something special. Rice milk is a rarity for me. I LOVE almond milk but apparently so does everyone else in the world because it is always out of stock when I want it. Coconut milk=heaven. But fatty heaven and for that I only add it in smoothies every now and then. Feel free to use any kind of milk you like. I avoid cow’s and soy milk because they both are no bueño on my tummy.

Where da sugar at?

Adding a bit of sweetness to smoothies is also a rarity. Sometimes the fruits don’t provide enough and this is where additives come in. I only add a bit of raw cane sugar, honey, stevia or agave nectar. Maple syrup works well too but be careful….it is high in calories.

Flavor enhancements?

Some add whey and hemp protein to their smoothies. I haven’t tried either yet but I LOVE cinnamon and ginger. I also add a few drops of Vanilla extract in a smoothie if I really want a nice treat.

A blender full of green smoothie is enough to last me the whole day.

If I am detoxing, I double my intake of green smoothie and drink them in lieu of breakfast and lunch. The great thing about green smoothies is that they can last for a good 2-3 days in the fridge.

That’s it, y’all!

Some of my favorite random recipes include:

Sliced apples (super refreshing)
Strawberries
Banana
Kale

Avocado
Pineapple
Spinach
Coconut milk
Banana
….tastes like a green piña colada. Yum!

Blueberries
Strawberries
Kale/spinach
Pineapple
Almond milk
….full of antioxidants and GREAT for after work-outs.

Happy blending!

Beauty Review: Clarisonic Mia Face brush

Finally!

It’s the post you’ve all been waiting for! I am excited to review the Clarisonic. I’ve it bragged it enough in my YouTube videos so it’s about time, right? This is going to be a picture heavy post so brace thy self. I’ll do this review by posing questions. I think this will be the best way to really get across how awesome the Clarisonic is. Click the jump to read on!

What are the other Clarisonic face brushes like?

The Clarisonic Mia face brush is the baby of group. Its older siblings include the Classic, which retails for $199 and the Plus which retails for $225. I haven’t used the big boys but the main difference, other than price, are the speeds. The Mia only has 1 speed whereas the Classic has 2 and the Plus has 3. If you are stuck on which Clarisonic to purchase, the website has an awesome comparison chart here.

How much is the Clarisonic Mia? Are there any ways to get it cheaper?

I was ECSTATIC when the Mia made its debut. It retails for $149 but I purchased it for 20% off thanks to a Sephora Friends & Family sale. That’s almost $30 off! If you really want to make this investment, but the price is hurting you–wait for a sale. Also, QVC sells the Classic and you can make 3 installments. Find out more about that here. You can also get it from Sephora and Ulta. I highly suggest purchasing from Sephora because they have a great return policy. I know the Clarisonic Mia is pricey but my skin (even in all of its craziness) is worth it.

Okay, so what does the Clarionic Mia do?
Here’s what the back of the box says…

And according to the website,

* Removes 6x more makeup than manual cleansing
* Leaves skin feeling and looking smoother
* Cleanses so well that products absorb better
* Gentle enough for twice daily use
* Helps reduce oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes
* Helps reduce the appearance of visible pores
* Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

What comes in the Clarisonic Mia box?

Inside you will find the system with a sensitive brush head, a charger and a 1 oz. sample of Gentle Hydro cleanser. I chucked that. You can use the Clarisonic with cleanser you choose. Inside the box is also a ton of valuable information about how often to charge (after 20 minutes of use) and ways to care for your your brush head and handle.

The Clarisonic Mia looks REALLY small. How big is it?
Since I have never owned the Classic, I can’t do a side by side comparison but I think the Mia is a great size.

It fits right in your hand. I have since played with the Classic in stores and it just feels bulkier and not as easy to control as the Mia. The Mia is also travel friendly and relatively lightweight.

How do you charge the Mia?
The Classic and the Pro both have cradles. The Mia, however, has a charger. The charger simply goes into the wall and connects at the bottom of the handle.

It’s pretty cool, actually. Align the holes up and the charger magnetically snaps into place with the handle.

How do you turn the Mia on? Is there a timer? Any bells and whistles?

The Mia turns on with a press of its only button.

Once this button is pressed, it will automatically turn off in 1 minute. It doesn’t beep or say “ta da” or anything like that. Remember, the Mia only has one speed so if you press this button again (after you’ve already turned it on), it will turn off.

How does the brush head feel? Is it okay for sensitive skin?

The sensitive brush head feels just find on my skin. I don’t find it to be too abrasive or harsh at all. Clarisonic brushes use sonic technology and are gentle on the skin. The bristles don’t dig into your skin rather they oscillate which actually feels good. Everyone’s skin is different so if you have extremely sensitive skin, perhaps using the Clarisonic only in one area on your face would be best; just to see how your skin will react.

The brush in action….

How does the Clarisonic Mia compare to Pretika’s face brush?

The Mia is MUCH better. Granted Pretika’s face brush is only $24.99 and it was “okay” when I used it. However, when I used the Mia my skin looked and felt different in a matter of weeks. This wasn’t the case with the Pretika and I used that for a good 3-4 months. Would I recommend the Pretika for those who don’t want to splurge on the Clarisonic Mia? Sure. But if you want the best for your skin…save your pennies (Lord knows it took me months…lol) and get the Clarisonic. See obvious differences between the two in my video here.

Okay, what’s the bottom line? Did the Clarisonic Mia work for you?
Absolutely!!! My skin has never looked better. I know that sounds cliche, but I mean it. My skin has changed completely and I attribute it to the Clarisonic Mia. I can’t even say diet, exercise and vitamins. Those have all been a part of my life for quite some time and my skin was STILL a mess. The Clarisonic Mia, along with visits to the dermatologist and skin tone correctors have really changed my skin. See my before and after pictures here.

The lengthy but very detailed video review…

Well y’all…told you it was a jam packed post. Between this post and the video, I think I have covered everything inquiring minds may want to know about the Clarisonic.

Now it’s your turn. Do you have one? Want one? Not sold on it yet?

Tell me!

Happy 2010! Love letter to Clumps fam…

It’s me on New Year’s Day at some fabulous little lounge in New York’s Tribeca. I brought in the New Year with some of my favorite people in one of my favorite cities. I’ll be in NYC for a few more days so I’ll be sure to post some of my findings. If you’re following me on Twitter, you’ll see that I’ve already tweeted new goodies from L’Oreal HIP and showed off the lavender mascara that I purchased. We’ll see how that mascara works. *gulp*

On a personal sappy sentimental note, I want to thank you all so much for your love and support in 2009. Did I tell you that Clumps is also Clumps of Mascara, LLC? I have so many ideas and visions for my new company. Clumps dot com will still operate as normal but I plan to expand in ways that I can’t even see right now.

This would not have even been possible had it not been for you all’s support. The emails, the comments, everything… A year ago I really had no idea what I wanted out of life. I had too many passions and didn’t know where to start. Thanks to y’all, I now know where my calling is and plan to continue to help inspire and motivate women to be the best that they can be.

Oh! Silly me…forgot to post my Top 10 Favorite Products of 2009.

So yeah, that’s it for now, darlings. I have got to go to Inglot! Oh and I need to go do some more investigating to see what kind of plans my friend’s have for my birthday tomorrow. Weeee!!

Politically Pretty: The Obama Time Capsule

What if you could personally document history? I mean….how cool would that be?

I was heavily involved in the last Presidential election. I watched every debate, tuned in to the Democratic and Republican National conventions, I campaigned for President Obama and I even attended inauguration. I was completely immersed in all things politics at that point. Kia from Yummy 411 and I even did a Politically Pretty challenge. Who says you can’t combine beauty and politics?

While I am able to hold onto those memories, I’ve got something that is tangible and will last a lifetime!

The Obama Time Capsule

Wait….look again. See the last author on there?

Your eyes do not deceive you. That’s me! I am all up and through this book. I created my own personal edition. It talks about President Obama’s journey to the White House. It goes in depth about EVERYTHING. Even things that relate to the new generation–me!

Liike…

I think it’s SO cool to see the influences social networking had on the election. Especially since I am a social networking nut. And to be able to share this with the future grandkids is just….wow.

See the invitation I got?

….and of course all of his fabulous supporters!

….and Obama art!

This is the PERFECT holiday gift for any one who was involved in the election. I think I’ll get my sister Courtney one aaaand Beauty and the Male’s KP one as well.

Shoot—well, now they know their Christmas gifts. Oh well!

You can find out more about The Obama Time Capsule here. I’m closing the book!

Clumps in the Streets: Maybelline ColorSensational Event

So remember in this post when I talked about Maybelline New York heading down South to tell us cool Floridians about their newest kids on the block? I was already heading down that way to visit family so it was totally meant to be that this event landed on the same weekend.

Saturday morning I grabbed Clumps’ Miami intern Briana, her Mommy and my BFF (she wrote an awesome post about this event on her Mommy blog). We headed to the “Little Havana” part of Miami and jetted to the parking lot where the ColorSensational trailer had been set up. There was a crowd of ladies listening to astrology expert Carlos Javier. He was revealing what colors best went with each sign.

Executive Editor of the magazine Siempre Mujer, Maria Cristina Marrero was also there.

“Psshttt….” whispered the intern. “Everyone is speaking in Spanish.”

Ah yes…the entire presentation era en Espanol pero I was fine. I’ve been speaking Spanish since I was a little girl so I was good!

Soon after the presentation, they opened the doors and let us in. The trailer had been set up with lip-over sections. It was gorgeous!

BriAna, the intern, is great…she took all of those photos while I chit-chatted with my lip consultant. I lovingly named her mi madre de labios (my Mother of Lips…ha!)

Together we picked out the perfect lip for moi. The ColorSensational collection has 4 color families to choose from….pinks, naturals, plums and reds. They are neatly categorized by packaging.

Anywhoovers, if you know me…you know I chose red!! And of course it scared me with the initial application.

But within seconds, I was loving it!

We used Very Cherry lipstick.

BriAna even got in on the action. She chose a teen appropriate color that looks so darling on her! Ohhh, to be 16 again!

I’ll be doing swatches and providing more information about the fabulousness that is the ColorSensational lippies. Until then..

SMOOCHES!

Mascara Monday: YSL’s ‘Volume Effet Faux Cils’ Luxurious mascara

‘ello there, darlings! And did everyone have a wonderful weekend? Enjoy Halloween? I spent mine at Bayside in Miami with the BFF and cousins. As much as I love the North, I also love this unseasonably warm winter in Central and South Florida. 90 degrees in November is SO what’s hot right now.

Is my first YSL cosmetic experience just as hot? Check the review….

YSL’s ‘Volume Effet Faux Cils’
Luxurious mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 ($28 from Nordstrom)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Luxurious mascara for a false lash effect. An intense look in a single stroke. The secret? A triple-film complex—a coating film for intensity, conditioning film for curve and fixing film for long-lasting effectiveness.” (source)

The truth:
I feel all luxurious and whatnot. I mean, wow…YSL mascara. Ohhh, dawliiing!

What I loved about it: That golden tube makes me feel like I’m holding a piece of…gold. I love it! And I love how this mascara comes in SIX colors. That’s dope, son!!

What I didn’t like: Blue, where you went? You went on beautifully but within minutes you disappeared. Dude, WTFrack…

Overall: So a few of y’all requested this mascara. I probably would not have reviewed it otherwise. But being that I’ve never tried a YSL mascara, I decided to give it a whirl.

I’m kinda glad I did because it’s a pretty cool mascara! First of all….10 points for YSL for having a burgundy and gray mascara. How cool is that? I’ll have to play around with those soon. It took me forever to figure out what color I was going to get. I wanted to be safe and stick with black but lately many of y’all have been asking me about colored mascaras, so I picked up #6 Deep Night and took it home.

Well….look how blue it is!

So pretty! The wand is decent. Not good, not bad but not ah-mazing, ya know? I really like colored mascaras but I get kind of annoyed when they don’t show up so well on dark brown/black lashes. I would love to see how this looks on blond lashes! Or even red…wow!

But I digress…to really see if I could get blue blue lashes, I rolled the mascara on top of my lashes. Like this…

This was after I applied on coat the “regular way”. It came out like this…

Boo. Clumpy and just..confused. LOL! This is without flash but they aren’t even that blue in person. *sigh*

So I applied it again the “regular way”.

Lashes without mascara
(photo from lash week)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Well, hot darn! That’s some pretty good volume and length. Not bad at all. And the lashes look all curly too. They almost look like falsies.

But wait. Here’s a far-away-shot. I’ve got the mascara on the left eye only. Does it look as good? And can you see the blue?

I guess it’s okay. But darn it! I want more blue! I’m still satisfied. It is a really good mascara.

Would I recommend it?: Yep! If you have close to $30 to spend on a mascara (which I don’t…see how much I love, y’all? LOL!), this isn’t a bad one to try.

Has anyone tried this one yet? I’m really itching to try the gray. Hmmm….

A crazed mascara reviewer,

FOTD Friday: My Halloween/funky looks

Hi darlings!

So this year I didn’t do a Halloween look. And I usually do. I guess I didn’t do much brainstorming this year. I know, I suck.

So….here’s a blast from the past of my most creative looks.

And, in a few days I will be be celebrating my 2-year brow accident anniversary. LOL, not really a celebration. But I will never forget that awful incident. I walked around like this for months….

So dark and dramatic, I know. HA!

Have a safe Halloween, fam!

Brown & Blushin': Illamasqua blush in Thrust

Well, I couldn’t just stare at Illamasqua without purchasing, could I? Granted I have no problem window shopping (story of my life, HA!) but I owe it to Clumps readers to test drive the car you may be thinking of purchasing, right? That’s what I’m here for!

Sooo, I thought long and hard about the Illa product I first wanted to review.

Blush was one of the winners, baby! Now if this doesn’t convince brown girls that we CAN wear blush, then I’m going to have to go on a traveling tour called “Listen brown girls, we can wear blush”.

Seriously.

Thrust is the business!

Prettyful, uh? Illamasqua describes this as “magenta” and it retails for $23. You can find out more about it here.

So I applied a generous amount on the cheeks….

And wowsers! I like it!

Blush does a body good and I’ll be visiting my Sephora again to check out some more of Illamasqua’s blushes…or powder blushers they call them.

Loves ‘em!

Have you tried any of Illa’s blushes yet?

You don’t wear blush don’t you? Hmmm…..
