Mascara Monday: Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

It’s been a minute since I’ve reviewed a mascara from Hard Candy. I received this for review quite some time ago and I’ve been testing this baby for a good 2 weeks. Which, is now, starting to become my standard. I used to review a mascara for at least a week, but I don’t know…a lot of good (and bad) can happen in 2 weeks.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara wand

Such was the case with this mascara.

Hard Candy Ginormous Lash mascara

Price: $6 from Walmart and Walmart.com
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Ginormous Volumizing Mascara infused with Growth Serum helps promote long-term lash growth, strength and vitality. Apply and watch as Ginormous plus Growth Serum stimulates your lashes to appear longer, fuller and stronger with regular use.” (source)

The Truth: Meh.

What I Loved About It: The wand works beautifully at really bringing out the lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: It didn’t volumize my lashes enough.

Overall: Well. I like Hard Candy. I really do. I think some of their polishes are freaking awesome and when it comes to budget makeup, you can always depend on them to step outside of the box and give us bold color and whatnot. They’ve got a slew of mascaras to pick from and any brand that gives me several mascaras to buy is alright with me.

This mascara not only promises to give crazy voluminous lashes but it is also supposed to help grow the lashes. I only reviewed this for 2 weeks, so I can’t speak much to that claim but the volumizing. It’s just okay. Really, it’s nothing monumental. And neither is the wand.

Mascara wand

I’m starting to prefer the plush brush wands over the plastic ones because you can really build up volume with them. So yes, for helping plump those lashes up, this wand works great. The formula is just so so. It wasn’t overly thick or thin but I felt like I had to apply a ton of coats for it to really show a lil’ somethin’. And said somethin’ was very minimal. Even after 3 coats, I didn’t feel as if I had much on my lashes. Some mascara lovers love the lightweight mascara feel and I do too, but only if my lashes look coated! And they just didn’t with this mascara. Boo. And double boo. But on a good note, I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking. Which is always a good thing. It’s an average mascara at best.

Do I recommend it?: I wouldn’t break my neck running to Walmart to get it but if you’re a lightweight mascara lover, you may appreciate it. However, if you’re like me and love those drag queen lashes, you may find this one a wee bit disappointing.umph!

Are you a fan of mascara with growth serums dumped in them?

New Polishes From Hard Candy!

So this week I’m going to be cranking out a toooon of nail polish posts. I’m behind on putting some thangs out and wanted to hop to it before the seasons change. About a month or so ago, Hard Candy released several new polishes. And not like 10 or 20. I’m talking like…50. It was a huge new collection and these polishes were landing in Walmart stores nationwide. Beauty bloggers were going crazy because these polishes were just…stunning. And there were so many different shades and formulas. Not just creams and shimmers but holographics and glitters. ZOMG is right. I finally spotted a few of ‘em and between those and the ones I was sent for review, I am so in love with Hard Candy right now.

2013-04-08

Beautiful, aren’t they? There are so many more that I want to scoop up. I am nowhere near done with my haul of HC polishes. But these will keep me satisfied for a good…week or so.

Little Bo Pink is a shimmery hot pink. It’s so pretty! And there is something crazy unique about it. It reminds me of sparkling ocean water. Except pink water. Crazy description, I know but I am totally drawn to this pink. And I am NEVER drawn to pink nail polishes. Or the color pink in general.

Black Tie Optional is a white and black glitter with specs of hexagon glitter bits. Yep, it’s cool. I’ve seen a ton of indie brands release a polish like this but I haven’t seen many of the bigger brands pull this off. It’s an awesome top coat and can spruce up any polish.

Crush on Gold is a warm gold foil. It’s not super spectacular but if you dig foils, you’ll like this one. I loved how smooth the formula was. It was nice and smooth at only 2 coats.

DSC_7606

Tinsel Town is a purple and gold glitter meshed with turquoise glitter. It’s pretty much New Orleans in a bottle. I layered it over Crush on Gold for some extra bling!

DSC_7622

Gummy Green looks like mint chocolate chip ice cream on the nails, uh? The black and white specs stand out beautifully against the mint base.

DSC_7635

Cotton Candy Pink is a baby pink with purple and silver glitter and teeny hexagon specs. I think I love this one more than Gummy Green

This is my first time trying Hard Candy nail polishes in a loooong time and I was impressed. The quality of these were spectacular. I applied 2 coats for each polish (except for the last 2. I used 3 coats for those babies) and formulas were all nice and smooth. Go Hard Candy!

Worth the price?: Absolutely!

Have you gotten any of these Hard Candy polishes yet? They are flying off of shelves like you wouldn’t believe…

Mascara Monday: Hard Candy Flat to Fab Lash Building mascara

DSC_4322

Soooo, I’m just a wee embarrassed at how few Hard Candy mascaras I’ve reviewed. There is really no excuse for this because not only do they have quite a bit to choose from but they are freakin’ cheap too. Ahhhh well. Better late than never, I suppose.

DSC_4314

Price: $7 at Walmart and Walmart.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Flat, lifeless lashes need a lift? Create dramatic volume and curl with Hard Candy Flat To Fab Lash Building Mascara. Lashes will immediately be taken from flat to flab with this long wear instant curling and volumizing mascara.” (source)

The Truth: I’ll tell you one thing…Hard  Candy knows how to make some eye popping mascara wands.

What I Loved About It: Yeah, I’m still head over heels in love with this packaging yo. And the lengthening is pretty nice.

What I Didn’t Like: It had the potential to be an awesome mascara but it fell short somewhere.

Overall: Well hellllloooo Hard Candy. I get so many emails to review their mascaras and I just forget to do so. I don’t do much shopping in Walmart and to my knowledge, that is about the only place where you can physically purchase their mascaras. But I’m on my A-game and got a few of their mascaras to review so I’m on it now! Let’s rap about the wand…

DSC_4324

Preggo brain (which has morphed into mommy brain) has me forgetting what popular mascara has a wand like this. I’ll give an e-star to anyone who can figure it out. We’ve definitely seen wands like this before and as funky and unique as they look, I don’t find that they are particularly useful with applying the mascara. Which isn’t a good or bad thing. Good news is you can still effectively go from root to tip with this wand without many problems. Surprisingly, the tip of the wand did a great job at getting those inner corners. Usually wands like this have big nasty globs of mascara at the end but nope, this one was great at only distributing a bit of mascara at the top of the wand. Woot!

Performance-wise, the mascara says that it’s going to give us curl and volume. Well, you know how I feel about mascaras that say they can help with curl. I believe the only way to see true curl in your lashes is to actually curl your lashes first. That is, if you aren’t one of those lucky kids who was already born with naturally curly lashes. So yeah, volume…the volume is just so so. Not good. Not bad. Not groundbreaking. Not horrible. This was a bit of a surprise because the formula was nice and thick. I applied 3 coats and by the 3rd coat, I still wasn’t impressed. I had a bit of lengthening and it was pretty impressive.

But what did impress me about this mascara was its ability to hold up throughout the day with zero flaking and smudging. Yasssss. That’ll win me every time. So yeah…so so volume and length but longevity rocks!

Do I recommend it?: Meh. I’ve seen better Hard Candy mascaras but if you’re big on lengthening mascaras, this one isn’t too bad.

Have you tried any Hard Candy mascaras?

Glitter bombs from Hard Candy

I don’t care how old I get, I’m always going to love glitter. I’ve heard these stories about how women should over a certain age shouldn’t wear glitter. Whatever yo. I’ll be 93 years old with glitter on my nails and won’t give a darn what anyone says. Shoooot. Life is short, wear glitter. Hard Candy would agree with me.

Who knew they had so many glitter bomb-y type products? I didn’t!

Check out this Eye Def creamy eye shadow for example:

While my oily eyelids won’t let me get down with creamy eyeshadows, I absolutely love the intense glitter in this baby.

In fact, there is so much glitter in it, that when you smooth it out, it becomes more of a pewter grew with a punch of magenta glitter. That said, this will probably be worn best solo than as a base. Throwing another shadow on top will take away from the awesomeness that is this Eye Def. If you’ve got oily lids like me, you better wear a primer. Not a bad deal for $6. These Eye Def shadows also come 7 other stunning shades. If you’d rather have your glitter be a little more versatile, check out the Show Girl All Over Body Glitter for under $4.

This is your basic arts and crafts-type glitter. And it’s loose alright.

Use too much of it and it will be everywheeeere.

Buuuut, if you need something a little more concentrated, there’s the Glitteratzi Body Spray for $6.23.

The distribution of glitter was there but the fragrance was just so…unpretty.

Yep. You’re better off rolling with the loose glitter. Still. If you’re a lover of glittah, Hard Candy at Walmart has you covered.

Mascara Monday: Hard Candy Lash Tinsel glitter mascara

Well, well, wellll….what do we have here? It’s a Hard Candy mascara! I get a lot of recommendations to review these mascaras and for the longest, I didn’t think that they were even in Orlando. Until I went to Walmart one fateful day and discovered that the Walmart nearest me actually has a ginormous selection of Hard Candy mascaras, lippies, polishes and eyeshadows. Well, heyyyy! With the holidays rolling around, I wanted to review a fun mascara. You know…something that can help you stand out at that holiday party. What can be more show stopping than a glitter mascara?

Price: $5 from Walmart and Walmart.com
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: I didn’t spot any claims on the packaging or website. Weird.

The Truth: This mascara makes your lashes rock hard.

What I Loved About It: The color is really pretty and I didn’t have to endure any glitter falling in my eyes – and I was afraid that I would.

What I Didn’t Like: The glitter didn’t look as noticeable as I wanted it to.

Overall: I think this is my first time reviewing a glitter mascara. Why yes. It is. To be quite honest, I’ve never been a fan of them. If you know me, you know that I really don’t like anything with glitter around my eyes. I’m just too paranoid that a fleck will fall in my eye while I’m driving and I’ll crash into a pole or something. That sounds ridiculously dramatic, I know, but I don’t want to take any risks. And so I usually run away from liners, mascaras and eyeshadows with large glittery specs. But in light of the season, I decided to push my fears to the side and try something new. Aren’t you proud of me?

The consistency of this mascara is on the gel side.

I think the consistency is actually better fitted for an eyeliner. It’s thin (but not too watery) and dries to a sturdy finish – just like a good glitter eyeliner. But because the glitter floats in a thin base, it makes applying it on the lashes difficult. And the mascara’s wand isn’t much help either.

It’s just so — cheap looking. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t need a super top-of-the-line wand that automatically applies my mascara for me. But I would like it to have bristles that are closer together. These bristles are spread out so far apart but it takes quite some time to get the mascara on the lashes. Once I managed to apply a few coats, I couldn’t really TELL that I had on a glitter mascara. Up close, I could see a bit of the teal but far away…nothing. If I’m going to risk wearing glitter mascara, doggone it – I want it to be seen! An hour or so after applying, my lashes became hard as bricks. I haaaate stiff lashes. I always feel like stiff lashes are victims of being accidentally pulled out. Yikes!

Yeah, I don’t know about this guy. Its saving grace is the beautiful shade of teal and the fact that if you have a small enough brush, it can double as an eyeliner. But using it as  a mascara? Not a good idea.

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 3 coats

Do I recommend it?: Only if you’re okay with only getting a minimal amount of glitter on your lashes. You could of course layer it over a mascara that you already have on, but that can result in flaking. This mascara is cheap enough to be useful for some and even if you don’t think it’s hot, you didn’t spend too much money so all is good.

Have you ever tried glitter mascaras? Yay or nay?

Hard Candy’s Fox in a Box. That rocks!

Despite not reviewing many of their products, I really like Hard Candy’s beauty stuffs. They’ve got gorgeous lippies and nail polishes and from what I’ve heard, their mascaras aren’t too shabby either. But HC is one of those brands that I have yet to have really tackle. Until now.

How cute is this packaging? And the name? Fox in a Box. *squeals* How awesome is that?
