50 million pound challenges: Greens 3x a day

Time for weigh-in!

…er uh, check-in. But speaking of weigh-in, I have only lost 2 pounds. Boo. I’ve never really been one to constantly weigh myself but since I’m doing this challenge I kinda have to, right?

Oh…the Mascara Mamas group is growing! We have a good 16 members now. So glad to have so many people on board.

When I was a on a raw foodie (for like a month but hey…lol) I learned SO much about incorporating greens in my diet. And not just at one meal. I try to get my greens in at least two meals a day. And three on a good day.

So for breakfast I’ll make an egg white omelet and toss in some some spinach sprinkled with lemon pepper. That’s feta cheese on the side. I can do without most dairy products but feta cheese is like….my weakness.

Lunch or snack is usually always a raw spinach salad. I keep it simple with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette, sunflower seeds, raisins and tomatoes. Sooo good!

And there’s the green smoothie aka green monster aka grass juice aka the best drink in the world. Can’t get enough of this stuff. I drink at least 40 oz of it a day. I usually drink it in between meals and if I’m craving something sweet at night…it’s a dessert!

I think green smoothies are great for folx who really don’t like the taste of greens. When combined with fruit, you can’t even taste them! I did a video of it here.

To my weight loosin’ peeps, keep it up! And for this week, try getting more greens in your diet.

See y’all next week!

50 million pound challenge: Eat This, Not THAT!

Time to check in, sisters! So far the Mascara Mamas team has 9 members! I’m so excited. Thanks for joining. You too can join and be a part.

When it comes to managing weight, I find that it is best if I am realistic. I tailor dietary ideas to fit my lifestyle. Hence why these books are my best friends.

Yes, I have ALL three of them and I love them. Especially when traveling. When I can’t make a green smoothie 0r bake kale chips, I am flipping through one of these books to see what I can eat on the go that won’t kill me. Loves it! I’ll do a formal review on these babies in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, check out these books. I find that they are a great little addition to a weight loss plan.

Anyone read these?

See you at next week’s check-in!

Healthy Beauty: Beauty in Green Smoothies: my video

By popular demand….

….or by the 3 of y’all (giggles), I have decided to do a little video of how I make green smoothies. This video has annotations of little tips and tricks if you are new to making green smoothies. Even if you could care less, you should still watch this as it may inspire you to incorporate more fresh fruits and veggies in your diet.

I didn’t use my handy dandy awesome camera for this video–and it shows! Enjoy nonetheless!

Beauty in Vegan eats and Raw Food treats

How corny is that title?

HA! I know, I know…

Lately I have been exploring vegan and raw foods. I have been talking about my experience, showed photos and tweeted recipes all over Twitter. I thought I should also do a quick post on Clumps of Mascara in case there are other Clumps readers looking to incorporate healthier foods in their diets.

Follow my photo journey!

A week starts with a visit to one of the local farmer’s markets here in Orlando. Can you believe I spend no more than $7 for a week’s worth of fruits and veggies? And people say eating healthy is expensive. Ha!

Google “green smoothies” and tell me what you find. Greens blended with your favorite fruits are the ultimate power drinks. They are not only tasty but are full of vitamins and minerals. My body literally craves these things. I usually use kale, spinach, collards, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes, bananas, ginger, almond milk, coconut milk, cinnamon. Whatever I can find, I toss in! The combinations are endless and ALWAYS delicious. No matter how funky it looks.

Lunch is usually a huge spinach salad with sunflower seeds, raisins, olive oil, lemon pepper, sprouts, tomatoes, peppers, etc. And although I’m not a fan of carrots, I find that munching on them keeps the hunger pangs at bay. Oh—and a gallon of water a day is a must!

One of my favorite meals! Spaghetti squash topped with fresh tomatoes and raw lemon drenched kale. Don’t knock it until you try it!

Can you tell I love kale? If I’m craving a crunch with a bit of saltiness, I make kale chips. Toss them in the oven for 10 minutes, sprinkle a little sea salt on top and they almost taste like chips.

And just because I’m incorporating more greens doesn’t mean I have to go without my sweets. I love pina coladas. Toss in a few pineapples, coconut milk, ice and cinnamon and oh wee….sah-weet!

Vegan chocolate chips anyone? Don’t turn your nose up. They taste just as good as the regular ones….if not better! This is the recipe I used.

Many have asked WHY I have gone this route. I simply wanted to spice up the way I eat—in a good way. I’ve been a good eater for quite some time but I am loving adding veggies to everything! And loosing weight along the way ain’t so shabby.

Let me know what you think! You know I find beauty in EVERYTHING so don’t be surprised to see more green foods somehow tied with beauty on Clumps of Mascara.

Beauty Initiative: The Red Pump Project

Hey family!

I’m not sure if yall know this about me but one of my biggest passions is awareness. And that’s with anything. I like to keep you all abreast of what’s hot in the beauty world but I also like educating any and everyone about any and everything beyond beauty.

Seriously, I strongly believe that education can really save lives.

And so…I can’t say how honored I am to participate in the Red Pump Project
“Wait….’hole up, B. What is the Red Pump Project to be exact?”

Per the website:

“One of the main purposes of National Women/Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is to encourage women to take a proactive approach in their sexual health. One of the biggest ways that you can do so is to know your status. Nowadays, many health organizations offer HIV/AIDS testing at little to no cost to individuals, and some places even offer rapid and/or needle-free testing.”

Now how can you NOT want to support and be a part of something like this?

I don’t care who you are……
Where you are from……
What you do….

GET TESTED!

Tell you friends to get tested.
Your family members.
Strangers on the street.

Any and everyone.

This disease is taking our our loved one….especially our women.

I have decided to wear my red pumps today in honor of this special day.

Hmmm mmm…my Nine West pumps from DSW. And I also decided to rock a red lippie as well.

This is Stila’s lipstick in Dominique.

…..and let’s disregard the skin, mmmkay? I am still trying to get that breakout under control.

As should you with your HIV status.

You can find out more about this project at The Red Pump Project blog.

Stay healthy family,

Beauty + Fitness: Wii Fit called me fat!

I have a confession.

I’m pretty obsessed with fitness. I think about it all the time. I am consciously always counting calories. And I have finally gotten to the point where I actually enjoy waking up in the morning to run my miles.

But nothing, I mean nothing beats my Wii Fit.

I got it for Christmas and can’t stop playing it.

The Wii Fit and I were good friends until it called me “overweight” *gasp* Imagine my horror! Apparently the Wii Fit didn’t know that I had already gone from 201 lbs to a little less than 180 lbs in the past 6 months. And surely the Fit didn’t know that my dangerously high blood pressure around 150 was dropped and stabalized to the normal 125-130 range. Yikes.

No worries. I continue to jump out of bed to run every morning and jump on the white board every night.

Fitness is beauty, family. Doesn’t matter how beautiful your gloss is. Or how “fab” your new boots are. High blood pressure doesn’t know that you massage your cuticles every night. Diabetes could care less if you spent $19 on that Make Up For Ever 92 eye shadow color (hehe). None of that matters.

THIS JUST IN: MUFE 92 can prevent anxiety/stress. Swatch it on your fingertip and see what I’m talkin’ about

We have to start taking better care of our bodies…not just on the outside, but on the inside, as well.

What do you think? Would you like to see more health related/weight loss posts on Clumps of Mascara? Do you think that health is relative to beauty or not so much?

I would love to know your thoughts. I also have a poll on the left hand side of the page. Vote por favor!

Stay beautiful but more importantly, stay healthy,

Sista Show Off: Fitness/Diet Blogs

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

As most of you know I have been actively training to run a 5K. I have been serious about fitness since July but I have kicked it up a notch within the past month or so. It is super hard to stay motivated. I can deal with eating healthy but forcing myself to run and sweat and lift weights is totally out of my element. Thank God for blogs like Gaining Beauty while Loosing Booty. This fitness trainer/Mommy really has been wonderful at keeping a beginner like me focused and motivated.

And then there’s the Diet Blog. I check this blog EVERY day. The posts are just as informative as the readers’ comments. The blog authors actually respond to your questions and are extremely helpful.

Talk about about a strong sista! Confessions of a Fitness Diva drops a ton of tips to help tone your flabby parts.

My other favorites include:

These blogs have been instrumental in inspiring me to stick to this new way of living. And don’t think you can’t do it. Had you told me a few months ago that I would be running 3 miles a day, I would have laughed at you. Soon I will be starting the Nike + program (I owe that one to you, Mischo!) and hope to make exercising as normal as breathing. Taking care of our bodies is beauty too!

Any athletes out there? Or anyone else working to loose weight or become more fit? Tell me!!

….and as always, stay beautiful!!
