Fabulous berry lips for a steal with Wet ‘n’ Wild Silk Finish lipstick

Lipstick and I have a rocky past. Until recently, I was very, very afraid of lipstick and gravitated more towards lip glosses and tinted lip balms; for some odd reason the idea of lipstick was just too much! Nowadays, I’m much more used to wearing color on my lips and I find it so fun to spruce up a look with a fun lipstick. The one I want to share with you today- Wet ‘n’ Wild Silk Finish lipstick in #522A Dark Wine- was my first “bold” dive into lip color.

I remember it like yesterday: it was a year ago in the fall, and I wanted to play around with color without breaking my student budget. I ran to my nearest Walgreens to peruse the beauty aisle, and as I glanced over the Wet ‘n’ Wild display, Dark Wine practically leaped off the shelf and into my hands. Was it possible to pay $.99 for a deep, berry red lipstick? Yes, indeed!

#522A Dark Wine is the only Wet ‘n’ Wild Silk Finish lipstick I own, but I’m in love with everything about it. The formula is smooth, pigmented, and long lasting. It provides opaque coverage in one application, and the color is just divine- the creamy, berry hue pops against my skin tone. At first I was hesitant to wear it- my favorite way to pull it off was to use it more like a stain. I would apply the lipstick and then dab my lips with a tissue to lighten it. As I’ve become more comfortable with it, however, I enjoy the bold look it achieves.

If you’re weary about how much quality can be packed into a lipstick less than one dollar, fear
not! Dark Wine lasts on my lips for 4-5 hours, even through eating. I wore it to work earlier this week and though the color needed touching up, I still received compliments on it after 7 hours.

The only complaint I have is that Wet ‘n’ Wild doesn’t offer many other wearable, frost-free
shades (many other Silk Finish lipsticks have an abundance of shimmer- if you like frosty
lipsticks, you are in luck!). Other than that, I’m obsessed with Dark Wine for its last abilities, smooth color, and comfortable wear.

If you’re in the market for a great dark red lipstick to complement your winter makeup wardrobe
(and on a tight budget like myself), definitely take a lot at what Wet ‘n’ Wild has to offer. This one ranks high on my list of favorites; I foresee getting plenty of use out of it in the coming colder months!

The Ultimate Stocking Stuffers – Lip Balms

Toss away my mascaras. Give away my blushes. Flush my eyeshadows down the toilet. But touch my lip balms, girlfriend and you just may pull back a nub. I don’t play when it comes to my lip balms. Hence why I love reviewing ’em, collecting ’em and giving ’em away.

How’s this for a lip balm army?

Aren’t they just fantastic? Do any of these babies look familiar you? If not, I’m excited to be introducing three new brands that make soothing and moisturizing lip balms. Plus, if you’re looking for cheap stocking stuffers, lip balms are the best way to go!

Okay, you’re going to hate me for this but the brand is still in the process of launching their website.

Even so, Nature’s Lip Nourishment lip balms are one of my favorites because the main ingredient is shea butter.

Which is nuts! I’ve never had a lip balm with shea butter in it. I use the Kool Mint one every night right before bed. I’m addicted to it and can’t wait for the website to launch so I can deliver more information about pricing and availability to y’all. Next up is MoistStic, a brand whose inclusion of peppermint helps soothe the lips while the tea tree oil helps heal the lips.

At $2.59 a pop, you can grab these ultra-healing lippies from Target, Kroger and online. It isn’t the tastiest lip balm and has a medicinal smell to it, but if you don’t mind it, MoistStic makes for a fantastic winter balm.

The most flavorful of the bunch comes from Surya Brasil, a brand that you can find at Whole Foods.

This vegan brand has some of the of the tastiest lip balms I’ve ever tried. I mean – not that I go around licking balms but you know…it happens. From Acai Berry,Chocolate and Strawberry, I can’t really decide which one I like best.

These beeswax lippies go for $3.49 and would be perfecto if they had SPF in them.

Don’t ask me to choose a favorite. I love ’em all!

Are you a lip balm lover? Which brand is your fav?

Pearl lips by Maybelline ColorSensational

Who loves lipsticks more than lip glosses? I do, darlings. I really do. Maybe it’s the old soul that’s in me but I find lipsticks to be classic and rather riveting. I feel like a “woman” when I apply them. I mean, don’t get me wrong…I love a good gloss but if I had to get rid of those or lipsticks. I’d send glosses to the curb in a heartbeat.

With the holidays rolling around, I’m going to do my best to show y’all lots of cheap lippies for holiday parties, gifts and stocking stuffers. Let’s start with these Maybelline ColorSensational jewels. You can grab these kids anywhere Maybelline products are sold and on Drugstore.com. All of these lipsticks have a pearl finish and like most lipsticks, are a wee bit drying. I wear a lip balm underneath to keep the moisture in my lips locked in.

Coral Lustre – I’ve never thought that coral lip colors were terribly flattering on my skin complexion. They are a little too cool and pink for my liking. Somehow, this one isn’t half bad. I actually feel okay wearing it without a lipliner.

Disco Pink – is a super pink with a whole heap of shimmer. I think it’s fantastic!

Glisten Up Pink is slightly cooler than Disco Pink whose shimmer isn’t as sparkly.

Nude Glow is a shiny caramel that actually works for me. I’m pretty picky with nudes and I really like this one.

Plum Shine isn’t as dark as a “plum” and that’s a good thing because I’ve had my fair share of burgundy lipsticks. Plum Shine is more of light red wine.

I’ve never claimed to be the best when it comes lipstick swatches so try to stifle those laughs if you see some lipstick creeping up on my check or somethin’. 8)

Whatcha think? See any you like? Disco Pink and Glisten Up Pink are definitely my faves.

Black Opal’s True Color Lipstick Kit Razzle Dazzle

Nothing like some good lip color palette porn to get a beauty lover excited, uh?

The prude that is me had a hard time typing palette porn. 😯 Let me move forward and attempt to forget about it before I delete it. Ha!

But yes, darlings…this is a quick feature of Black Opal’s True Color Lipstick Kit Razzle Dazzle. This limited edition palette retails for $20 which is  a decent price for a palette chockfull of fall lip colors.

I’m not sure how flattering these natural and nude-y shades will be on my skin complexion but that won’t stop me from trying them out.

Ohmigoodness, did I really type porn AND nude in the same post?

I’m just awful.

I think palettes like these are better suited for makeup artists than for gals like myself who usually do makeup in under 5 minutes.  Are you a fan of lip palettes?

Green Cosmetics for the Tween in Your Life

Aren’t these lippies just darling, darling? They’re cheap, free of preservatives and geared towards the teeny boppers of the world. Just how cute is that?

About 80% of the products I review on Clumps are paraben-free. And why? While I haven’t omitted every single chemical from my beauty shelves, I at least want to feature products that are less harsh on your skin. We can argue all day on whether or not parabens and phthalates are really harmful, but my goal is to put products on your radar that have less of a chance of hurting that beautiful skin of yours. Add GeoGirl to the list. This line contains lipglosses, lipsticks, moisturizes, eyeshadows and liners that are perfect for the tween in your life.

Okay, granted I’m not anyone’s Mama yet (wipes brow) so I don’t know the “appropriate” age for introducing cosmetics in a girl’s life. I love how this line makes it easy. Take this gloss for example…

Retailing for $4.29, Tutti Fruiti is a nice sheer gloss with just a hint of shimmer and color. And by hint, I mean you can hardly see it.

Raspberry (purple shade), Tutti Fruiti (pink shade)

Which is probably a good thing for Moms who aren’t ready for their daughters to walk around with bright glosses. The consistency feels nice and while the staying power isn’t the longest, I’m pretty sure your 13-year old isn’t too pressed to only wear cosmetics with 12-hour staying power. Then there are lipsticks…

(l-r) Strawberry Fields, Bubblegum

They may be too cool for my complexion but I think they are dainty enough for the tweenies. Also less than $5, these lipsticks come in beautiful cardboard packaging. Each product comes with lots of e-tips.

And of course the ingredient list is right up my alley. 😉

I think I’ll be getting my 13-year old baby sis some of these for stocking stuffers. You can snag these from Drugstore.com and Walmart store locations.

The best lip pencils! Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Lusters

Oh  Tarte. You certainly know your way to a girl’s hearts. Have you gals seen these things yet? Oh my words…they are incredible!

We all know how much I love Tarte. As one of my favorite brands evaaaaa Tarte is always giving us something innovative, practical and au naturale. These Lip Lusters fall right in the “Tarte is cool” congo line. This isn’t Tarte’s first time doing lip pencils. I never got a chance to try them but they have similar lip pencils with a matte finish. I’m all for matte lippies but lately my lips have been so ridiculously dry that the last thing I need to be using is a matte lipstick or gloss.

The Lip Lusters, however, are different. They have pops of glitter and are nice and moisturizing. Really! I don’t even have to wear a lip balm prior to applying these lippies. And that hardly ever happens. If you aren’t a fan of shimmer, worry not because the shimmer isn’t overwhelming. I also LOVE the peppermint scent and taste of these. If I’m going to have a scent and taste to my lip products, I prefer it to be peppermint.

Pouty just happens to be my favorite of the bunch. Described as a berry, it’s the one shade that has a permanent place in my makeup bag.

Pardon my silliness. Almost 5 years of beauty blogging and I still haven’t figured out how to take nice pictures of my lips. It’s like the most difficult feat ever. Glisten is a peach and one of the two nude-y shades in the bunch. It adds a bit of sparkle to my natural lip color.

Frisky is described as a bright pink but it really doesn’t appear that bright on my lips. I’d say it’s a baby pink. Pretty and pink.

Fever is a red and it’s my second favorite. It’s not a screaming ‘out there’ red. It is subtle enough to wear comfortably at work and gorgeous enough to rock to Happy Hour too. IF I went to Happy Hour. Y’all know I don’t drink.

Adored is a light pink that is cool enough for even me to love.

These retail for $24 a pop and while pricey, I do think you get the most bank for your buck. You get a good amount of product in that tube…

I apply Pouty at least daily and have yet to re-sharpen it. Speaking of sharpening, it sharpens itself so no having to worry about finding a pencil sharpener large enough. Twist and turn…

Easy like Sunday morning. If you don’t feel so inclined to grab them all, I would definitely scoop up Pouty. I think it’ll like beautiful of folx of all skin complexions and shades.  And of course you can get these from Sephora stores and Sephora.com.

Have you tried any of these lippies yet?

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment: My new favorite lip balm

Okay, uh…how do I say this without coming off  as being waaaay over the top? I pretty much found the best lip balm EVER in life. And I know some of y’all out there are going to laugh and be like, “Really B? You say that all the time.” And in a sense, I do. I am always on the hunt for the best of the best when it comes to lip balms. Most times, my lips are drier than the freaking Sahara Desert and so I’ve got to be on top of the balm game.

That said, I am wondering why I’ve never given Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment a chance. I’ve heard phenomenal things about it from fellow beauty bloggers but just never gave into purchasing it.

Oh yeah. Because it retails for $22.50 that’s why. Cheapy McBritty over here (that’s me) can’t justify spending that much on a lip balm. Especially when so many good ones cost way less. But with some extra pennies in my pocket, I decided…”Why not?” After all, it would take way more than $22 to break me. More like $30. 8)

Dear Heavens, this is the BEST balm ever. Have I said that already? Please excuse my repeat phrases, but seriously guys and gals, you NEED this balm in your life. There was a reason why Julia recommended it to me. There is a reason why it has so many positive reviews on Sephora. This balm is fantastic!

-It’s paraben-free with no synthetic dyes and no phthalates
-The packaging is awesome! It’s a like a grown up lip balm
-It doesn’t have a horrible taste
-Has a nice and subtle scent. Very subtle
-It contains SPF 15
-It applies beautifully with a thick and super moisturizing consistency

-Super expensive for a lip balm
-You may have to reapply often
-You don’t get enough product for the price

Despite the Cons, I’d buy this balm over and over again. In fact, I need to buy some for work, home, my car and purse. Don’t worry. I won’t send myself to the poor house on account of purchasing balms. But if I did, it would be Fresh’s fault. Here’s to hoping they have a holiday set! They also have these in tinted shades and of course I need them all. Why so ‘spensive, Sugar lippy? I need y’all to be recession-friendly so I can hoard you all!!

Have you tried any of these lip balms?

FOTD Friday: Violent Lips temporary tattoos

Halloween is comiiiing! Are you dressing up? Got a costume? Goin’ to a party? I haven’t quite decided what I’m going to do for Halloween. I really only get dressed up if I’m going to an event, but if I’m not, inhaling a bag of Halloween candy and then complaining about how much weight I’ve gained the following week should suffice. If you’re lookin’ to do somethin’ a little different for the spooky holiday, check out Violent Lips.

I know, right? Looks kinda cool/weird. Have you heard about these temporary tattoos? I think they are super practical for those of use who want to do something shocking without going over the top.

Okay, I lied. Wearing a temporary tattoo on your lips can be considered “over the top” but you know what? It’s fun, unexpected and totally innovative. So how do these work?

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out but be prepared to spend a good 10+ minutes applying it as it takes time. Going too quickly can result in making some errors. Which of course will be spotted all over this post 8)

Spotted at Sephora and Sephora.com, you can get Violent Lips for $15. Considering you’d only wear these for special occasions, I think it’s a pretty good deal. Plus, you get three of them!

Here’s the thing…you have to know how to read. Thoroughly. Don’t give me the crazy face. The instructions are easy to understand but don’t try to be a Literary Speedy Gonzalez. Take…your…time.

Good thing the steps are easy to understand.

1. I popped the tattoos out and removed the plastic film.
2. Using cuticle scissors, I cut along the lines to get as close to my lips’ width and height. This part was tricky. I found the top lip to be easier than the bottom lip but it was still pretty tricky.
3. After measuring, I pressed the sticky side on bare and dry lips. And by dry I mean no lip balms or glosses.
4. Blot the tattoo with a bit of water on a cotton pad or washcloth for 40 seconds.

The entire process for both top and bottom lips may take you a while. Especially if you suck at measuring your lips. Which yeah….I did. I’m horrible at cutting paper so cutting temporary tattoos for my face ain’t all that easy. But I did the best I could.

The good news is that Violent Lips have a lot of cool designs so if it’s not sprinkles you like, they have a crazy selection on their website. I don’t fancy the sprinkles as much as I do some of the other designs. But still…it’s fun.

-Relatively affordable
-Several designs to choose from
-Application, wear and removal don’t damage your lips in any way
-They stay on for quite some time. Even while drinking. You can get a good 3-4 hour wear out of them

-Cutting the tattoo can be a bit tricky and time-consuming
-They leave your lips beyond dry. A balm on top will decrease wear time
-Stretching your lips before allowing them to dry can result in a distorted design
-Removal can be a little difficult. It took a bit of scrubbing for me to remove it all.

Whatcha think? Yay or nay to lip tattoos?
