Makeup Wars: 5 Beauty Resolutions That I BETTER Stick To In 2014

Beauty Resolutions

I’m not the type to make annual resolutions (I’m a fan of smaller weekly and monthly goals) but when my girls thought of the idea to do beauty resolutions, I just couldn’t pass this one up. Part of me wants to blame my laziness and frugality on being a new mom but dude, my babe is almost a year old. I can’t use this “I’m a new mom and don’t have time for anything” spiel forever, can I? Soooo, here are some things that I blame to change and institute in 2014.

Wash my face every night.

It’s a bit embarrassing to admit that I’ve gone to bed without washing my face. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who does this but I’ve made too much of a habit out of it. 9pm hits and the old lady in me doesn’t want to do anything that requires lifting a hand. At the very least I can invest in face wipes to wipe off the makeup IF I’m not going to bust suds nightly. But still…busting suds is better.

Wear a full face of makeup at least once a week.

In the 6+ years I’ve been into makeup, I’ve gone through 2 extremes. I went through wearing makeup every day like my life depended on it to not wearing anything at all. I’d like to meet myself in the middle and at least commit to wearing eye shadow once a week. I don’t want my skills to disappear on account of my laziness.

If nail polish starts chipping, remove it.

I know. I know. This is bad. I really should know better. Chipping nail polish is the worst but I’ve spotted myself rockin’ this like it’s a trend. And that needs to stop. ASAP.

Do weekly hair treatment

I’ve always been lazy in the hair department and for the most part my hair continues to look relatively healthy. But a lil’ weekly treatment wouldn’t hurt. I’m going to check out the natural hair blogs to see what nourishing treatment I can do to help with shine, manageable and all around hair health.

Spend $50 a month on new products

Back in the day, I spent well over $50 a month on makeup. And now I don’t spend anything. My priorities have changed and I was pinching pennies for quite some time but I think I can afford to invest in some new and pretty beauty baubles. Besides, I deserve it, don’t I? I work hard yo!

Makeup Wars: 5 Indie Nail Polish Brands That You MUST Try

Indie polishes

My Makeup Wars sisters and I are back and we’re showcasing some of our favorite indie brands. By indie, we mean brands that you probably won’t find in Sephora or UTLA. These brands are typically smaller businesses and they don’t always have a Marketing Department or Sales Department. They are run by real men and women and sometimes out of their own homes. They do it all!

I don’t own much indie makeup but I certainly have my fair share of indie nail polishes. Indie nail polishes have taken the nail polish blogosphere by storm. These brands are giving us nail polish lovers unique shades and finishes and I am so here for it. The bigger brands are obviously keeping their eyes peeled because I’ve seen them come out with shades AFTER an indie brand has released it. That said, check out some of my favorite indie brands!

Cult Nails

Well, obviously Cult Nails would be first. Maria is a good and supportive friend of mine but even if she weren’t, I would still love this brand. Her polishes are AMAZING! She puts serious thought behind each shade and prides herself on stepping outside of the box. I’ve watched Cult Nails grow overnight and I am just so honored to know the woman behind this awesome brand.

My favorite Cult Nails polishes: Flushed, Deal With It, Lamestain and Charlatan

Literary Lacquers

Gotta love a brand that combines 2 of my loves…books and nail polish! Amy reached out to me to see if I wanted to feature her brand on Clumps of Mascara and how could I say “No”? For one thing, I love when nail polish brands seek diversity. And the fantastic polishes are just the icing on the cake.

My Favorite LL nail polishes: More Like Fire Than Light, Green Gables, As The Waltz Was Ending

Cirque

I can’t remember which nail polish blogger prompted me to stumble on Cirque’s nail polishes, but man, I am hooked. I love everything about this brand. The name, their adorable bottles and the shades. Ooooh, the shades! I like how Cirque is always releasing something unexpected. While many brands follow trends, Cirque does not and I love that about them. This one is nail polish brand that always keeps me on my toes.

My favorite Cirque nail polishes: Tibetan Nights, XX, Dark Horse, Cornotion (wish I owned it but it’s $48!)

A. England

I fell in love with A.England at first glance. I don’t know much about the owner or her story behind the brand but I know that she has perfected holographic nail polishes. And this is no easy task. Holographic nail polishes are my absolute favorite and it’s so hard to find good ones. A.England has a slew of gorgeous polishes but they rock at creating holographics. I mean, amazingly so!

My favorite A.England nail polishes: Lady of the Lake, Tristam and St. George

Nailventurous

I believe Floam was my very first indie nail polish. It holds a special place in my heart because um, well…it looks like the legendary Floam! I’m not sure if Nailventurous launches new polishes anymore but when the lady behind the brand was regularly launching polishes…WOW! I loved the uniqueness of these polishes. Also, while other brands have colors similar to Floam, I believe it was Nailventurous who did it first.

My favorite Nailventurous nail polishes: Floam, Sunny Floam, Bumblebee

Makeup Wars: All I Want This Holiday Season Is…well, here’s a list!

Makeup Wars Holiday Wishlist

ZOMG! The holidays are a comin’ and while I am so not ready for them (I’m far too stressed these days to really enjoy ‘em!), they’re comin’ anyway. I’m not gonna lie – I kinda miss the days of being able to give my parents a list of things that I wanted and actually getting those gifts. Welp. Those days are over. Ha! The married with kid life means if I want something, I need to save up and get it myself!

But ain’t nothin’ wrong with wishin’. And for this Makeup Wars post my girls and I are sharing our holiday wishlists.

Vitamix

I want a Vitamix blender sooooo badly. And I’ll never buy it myself because as much as I want it, I could think of so many other things I could buy with that money. But man – the things I would make if a had a Vitamix. The soups I brew, the smoothies I would…smoothe. I could do it all.

Naomi Afro Manikin

Look. I have a daughter. And I’m a Black girl. And I DON’T know how to cornrow. This does not bode well as taking care of naturally thick hair requires skill. With this manikin I could practice braiding and cornrowing so that by the time my girl gets too old for afro puffs, I’ll be able to put some adorable rows in her hurr (picture source).

Clarisonic Aria

Yeeeep. The Aria has been out for over a year and I still want it. And  there’s an Aria with a Josie Maran Set. They combined 2 of my favorite loves. *squeals* I’d also take Clarisonic’s Pedi Foot Transformation Set. Or both. Whatever.

Formula X for Sephora nail polishes

I want them all. I don’t need EVERY shade. But I at least need 10. Or 20. I’ve heard so many great things about this brand. Word on the beauty blogger street is that Formula X for Sephora nail polishes give you complete coverage with only one coat. Say whaaaat?

Reusable Rainbow Snack Bags

I’m a grazer and eat a lot of snacks throughout the day. I have a few reusable snack bags but I want more. Plus I love supporting work from home mamas!

Jewelry Holder

Also on Etsy is this gorgeous jewelry holder that I’ve been meaning to buy myself. It holds everything in ONE place. This organizer would make getting ready in the morning so much easier.

Wool Dryer balls

Y’all know I’m a hippie so this really shouldn’t even come as a surprise. I already use some wool dryer balls but I hear that having even more is better. These things are great! They really do fluff up towels and cloth diaper inserts aaaaand you don’t have to run the dryer as long. I haven’t used dryer sheets in years so the wool dryer balls are a great alternative.

Boscia Mask Medley

I’ve reviewed Boscia’s masks before but I need to re-up STAT. I had no idea that they had all 3 of their masks in one nice little set. So sweet of them to think of me like that.

Mason Jars

Doesn’t matter the size. Or the color. I want more! I use my mason jars for everything but I’m noticing that I’m running out. So…I need more!

Repayment of my student loans

No explanation needed. A wishlist is a wishlist, right?

Makeup Wars: Brand Wars

Weeee, it’s time for another Makeup Wars! This go ’round we’re sharing our love for our favorite brands. Well, at least one of our favorite brands. Each girl picked a brand and we’re showcasing our favorites from that brand. Guess which brand I picked…?

Tarte Cosmetics

Yes. Yessssssss. I love me some Tarte. A few weeks back I did a post on 5 Reasons Why Tarte Rocks and if that didn’t show hard I fangirl for that brand, I don’t know what will. I could easily be an ambassador for them because I love everything that they stand for. And it’s very rare that I run into a Tarte product that I don’t like.

Tarte Lights Camera Flashes

I do wish that they had more of a wide range of products for various skin tones. I love you more than gluten-free bread, Tarte but c’mon, y’all. It’s 2013 and there are soooooo many beauty lovers of all kinds of shades. You should be catering to us all.

Tarte BB Cream

But change takes times and I’m hoping in the next few years we’ll be seeing darker foundations shades from them. And while I know Tarte is on the more expensive side of things, I can appreciate how they are regularly on QVC. Their QVC-exclusive collections give you more bang for your buck and you can pay spread your payments out a bit more.

Tarte QVC

It’s hard for a beauty blogger to pick one favorite brand but Tarte really embodies everything that I love from their natural approach, beautiful packaging and fragrance-free products. Hey Tarte, are you listening?! I guarantee you, if you add some dark skinned beauties modeling your products, you’ll appeal to a whole new demographic. You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve heard “Well, I didn’t think Tarte was for me because I’ve never seen anyone as dark as me wearing their products.”

Tarte Wild lipstick

Well, now you have, brown girls…now you have. Go Tarte go!

Check out the other brands that my Makeup Wars sisters picked…

Makeup Wars: Fall Manicure

Hey girl hey! Fall is in full swing (even in humid Florida) and I am all kinds of excited about it. The changing of seasons means I get to expose Elle to random happenings like pumpkin patches and it also means I can pull out my favorite Fall-inspired nail polishes. This Makeup Wars, the girls and I decided to showcase our favorite Fall manicures. I am far from a nail artist so I kept it simple and used one of my favorite polishes out this season.

DSC_1394

Say hello to the gorgeous Lamestain from Cult Nails’ All Access collection. I purchased all of the polishes from this collection but I adooooore this one the most.

DSC_1393

It’s a stunning polish, right? It’s a gorgeous and rich burgundy jelly that DOESN’T look black on the nails. It is everything I could have ever wanted in Fall nail polish. To add a bit of sparkle, I added Essie’s As Gold As It Gets on top.

DSC_1408

And since I’m as untraditional as they come, I am also loving butter LONDON’s Royal Navy as a Fall mani.

DSC_1427

I did a horrible silver glitter nail design on top but Royal Navy is the best navy nail polish everrrrr.

Check out the polishes the Makeup Wars girls picked as their favorite Fall manicures…

5 Cruelty-Free Brands That You Have To Check Out

Cruelty Free Beauty

The Makeup Wars crew is back and this time we’re highlighting our favorite cruelty-free products. I have my own theories about what “cruelty-free” actually means but I’ll save my rant for another day. I do know that there are many of you cruelty-free lovers out there so I know that you guys and gals will love this post. And so without further ado, check out 5 of my favorite cruelty-free brands.

Tarte Cosmetics

It’s no surprise, is it? I love me some Tarte. From their skincare products, to their lippies and liners, everything that Tarte releases impresses me. And it’s not just the quality of the products either. The packaging of all of their beauty goodies ALWAYS rocks. The Tarte team clearly thinks about branding and they rock. If you like higher-end cosmetics with a “natural” spin to it, you’ve got to check out Tarte Cosmetics.

NYX Cosmetics

DSC_0637

Girl yes. I love me some NYX. Where else will you get affordable makeup, that is great quality and easy to find? And what other brand releases an entire collection of just mascara? Yeah. NYX will always have my heart.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

OCC Lip Tars

I’ve been rollin’ on the OCC train for quite some time. Saying I’m obsessed with them would be just a little too cheesy but it’s certainly accurate. This brand is not for the weak. If you love supporting semi-indie brands and aren’t afraid of color, mixin’ and being BOLD, OCC is the way to go. I can’t waiiiiiiit to stop by their booth at The Makeup Show Orlando later this month.

St. Ives

DSC_7255

I’m a total skincare snob but I am open to using any brand as long as they are low in fragrances, dyes and synthetic crap. And that’s why I love St. Ives. They have recently reformulated a lot of their products and they are even more amazing. Three words: Green Tea Scrub.

[NOTE: Welllll, it looks like St. Ives may not be cruelty-free anymore but to be safe, check out the brand Desert Essence. They are definitely cruelty-free and one of my favorite skincare brands!]

Salma Hayek NUANCE

DSC_3865

I love love looooove this CVS-exclusive brand. Their skincare products are pretty awesome but so are their cosmetics too. And it’s a brand that caters to brown girls so the pigmentation of their shadows, lippies and blushes are dead on. Woot!

Check out some of the other cruelty-free brands and products of my Makeup Wars girls.

Makeup Wars: My Top 3 Favorite Oils

This week my Makeup Wars sisters and I are talking about oils. Weeeee!!

Cosmetic oils

Oils are totally a fad and er’thing now but honey, when I was growing up, oils were staples. Just like the butters. Brands think they are being all innovative by dumping naturally extracted oils in their products  but I’ve been using these oils in their original origins for yearsssss. I hoard many because they all have their uses but my favorite are these three…

Coconut oil

Coconut oil

Yes, girl. Yes. Coconut oil is the TRUTH! I use it daily and on every part of my body. Coconut oil gets slathered all over after a shower. I use it in my hair. I use it to remove makeup. I put it on my baheh, I use it to lubricate the nips after pumping (TMI nothin’…if you’ve ever put your nip in a baby’s mouth or in a flange, you know how badly the nippies need to be soothed afterwards) and I use it to moisturize cuticles. And if I’m craving an omelette or green smoothie, I’m using a teaspoon of coocnut oil. We don’t use PAM cooking spray. We use coconut oil. And don’t even get me started on coconut milk. Basically, El Coconut needs to run for President so that I can be its Campaign Manager.

Maracuja Oil

I hadn’t heard of maracuja oil until Tarte released it. And then I fell in love. It’s far from cheap if you get it from them but it’s worth the investment because this is one oil that doesn’t feel…oily. It’s amazing! I can slather this stuff all over and don’t feel like I can slip and slide down the tile floors. Elle’s super dry skin loves maracuja oil. Her skin sucks it up and while it won’t leave an oily film, it still feels nice and moisturized. Tarte also sells a version of this in a roller ball dispenser.

Best idea ever because now I can oil up on the go!

Argan oil

DSC_6110

I first learned of argan oil when I was aimlessly scrolling on TV and got trapped by QVC. Josie Maran was talking about her argan-infused products and I made my first purchase and then fell in love. To be such a light oil, argan oil is powerful! A little goes a long way and like maracuja oil, it doesn’t leave me feeling greasy. I also really adore argan oil because it plays nicely when placed in other products. I’ve even mixed my BB cream with this stuff and it didn’t cause any problems.

Honorable Mentions:
-Jamaican black castor oil
-grapeseed oil
-olive oil
-sweet almond oil
-jojoba oil

Check out some of my Makeup Wars girls’ favorite oils.

Do you have a fave?

Makeup Wars: Color Wars

This is probably the funniest (yes, that’s a word….for today) Makeup Wars ever! Each of us gals signed up for a color and we are going to be sharing some of our favorite products featuring that color. I picked purple! For the record, I don’t have a favorite color. And if I did it would be rainbow and since a rainbow has a TON of colors I’m not sure that really counts.

I know. I’m so complicated but picking a favorite color when there are so many beautiful ones out there just ain’t easy. I picked purple because there are just sooooo many gorgeous purple picks when it comes to the beauty world. Here are 3 of my faves.

Purple nail polish

I love love looooove purple nail polish. Especially when it is unexpected and has some kind of funky shimmer or whatnot. It’s hard to pick a favorite (especially since I did so in our last Makeup Wars post) but Zoya’s Aurora is by far the prettiest purple nail polish in the world.

DSC_1238

You can’t deny it. You KNOW you can’t. Sidenote: I sooooo miss my longer nails. Can’t wait until I can do this shape again.

Ah yes…purple lips. You either love ’em or hate ’em. I can easily get down with some purple lips and it was MAC’s All of My Purple Life that had me going bananas.

Pay no attention to my beach hurr but to that stunning purple gloss. Yas! Yas!

When it comes to eyes, I think purple eyeshadows look amazing on everyone – especially on brown eyed girls. Make Up For Ever’s #92 is epic. I mean, epic. I think I’ve lost this baby because I haven’t seen it in awhile but years ago (can’t believe it’s been that long since I’ve used it) but it was the bee’s knees back in the day. I took this picture back when I didn’t care much about photography.

That about does it…a few of my favorite purple picks. Of course I’ve got more but I don’t want to make this post insanely lengthy. I’ve always wanted purple hair but my jobs never allowed it. Womp. Check out the colors my other Makeup Wars sisters picked!
