Mascara Monday: Mary Kay Lash Love mascara

Mary Kay Lash Love mascara

Where are my Mary Kay girls at? This is a highly requested mascara and I am so sorry that I am just now getting the opportunity to review it. I received this mascara for review and even before then so many of my gal pals were telling me how awesome this mascara is how it’s a travesty that I haven’t reviewed it yet. I know, I know. Well, here we goooo!

Price: $15 from MaryKay.com and from a Mary Kay consultant
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Love your lashes with the mascara that defines, defends and delivers four times the volume while looking naturally flawless, soft and healthy. The flexible, sculpted brush separates and coats lashes.” (source)

The Truth: I found the volume to be just okay, but the length was niiiiice.

What I Loved About It: Um yeah. The length.

What I Didn’t Like: It was just a wee bit smudge-y for my liking.

Overall: I don’t try many Mary Kay products. Mainly because I kinda forget about the brand since they aren’t sold at Sephora, department stores or the drugstores. I know. Bad B. I should really be more hip to Mary Kay products because they really have some pretty awesome things. This mascara isn’t bad at all. In fact, I found myself wearing it weeks after I reviewed it. And that never happens.

I think most of the reason why it’s so awesome is because of the wand.

Mary Kay Lash Love mascara brush

Even if you hate plastic wands, you HAVE to like this one. It’s got those nice and stiff bristles that are great at catching each and every lash. Crazy and wonky lashes like mine don’t stand a chance against this kind of wand. I loved how it combed straight through my lashes and helped elongate the lashes.

Volume-wise, I didn’t get much plumping but I think the wand is made more for lengthening than for volumizing. And I’m okay with that since the lengthening action was decent. The downfall to this mascara? I found it smudged a bit throughout the day. A top coat mascara like Anastasia Lash Genius should set it straight though. Otherwise, it’s  a decent mascara. The formula was easy to work with and I didn’t experience any clumps. So yeah, the smudging sucks but the mascara is still worth a try.

Do I recommend it?: If you’re a Mary Kay fan and/or really want to try a good lengthening mascara, I say give this one a whirl.

Any Mary Kay girls in the house? What do you think about this mascara?

Mascara Monday: Revlon Lash Potion by Grow Luscious mascara

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

A new Revlon mascara!! It is a well known Clumps of Mascara fact that I’ve always had issues with Revlon mascaras. And I’m not the only one either. Many of you have had your issues with the brand’s mascaras. The past few, however, have been decent and despite not being an insane fan of the original Grow Luscious mascara, I was kinda excited to try this one that I received for review.

And I mean, look at the packaging!

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Talk about ‘Best Dressed Mascara’, uh? Let’s hope she lives up to her fabulousness!

Price: $7.99 at drug and mass retailers nationwide and from CVS, of course!
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Revlon Lash Potion drenches lashes with a potion of strengthening proteins for captivating volume and length. Lash Potion works to nourish lashes so they reach their fullest potential—looking lush, long and lustrous. The Lash Potion ‘Illusionist Wand’ has wide grooves to instantly coat lashes in formula for maximum volume and triple brushes to comb through for clump-free length – in just one swipe! There are no smoke and mirrors here – just enviable long, voluminous lashes.” (per press release)

The Truth: Not bad. Could be better though.

What I Loved About It: The volume is niiiice. It’s been awhile since I’ve tried a mascara with a good amount of volume. This one has it!

What I Didn’t Like: Revlon still can’t get the whole mascara packaging thing down right. Ugh. It’s so annoying.

Overall: I really do have a love/hate relationship with Revlon. I’ve always thought that their mascaras had so much potential but there was always something that stopped them from being awesome. It usually isn’t their wands because the wands are pretty awesome. I like this one a lot!

mascara wand

Yeah, it’s pretty massive but it’s a fantastic wand for volumizing. And boy does it really bring those lashes out there! If you’ve got super tiny lids or lashes you may struggle with this one a bit. And not because the wand is so huge. But because of that huge mascara hole…

mascara tube

This is so common in Revlon’s mascaras that I’ve given it a name. I’ve named it the Black Abyss. I don’t know why this feature keeps popping up in their mascaras. It does nothing but cover their great brushes with a ton of mascara goop. And it takes time to remove said goop. Time that many don’t have, well…time for. That said – as awesome as the wand is, the Black Abyss gets in the way a bit.

But if you’ve managed to remove the excess goop and apply the mascara to your eyes you’ll achieve a wonderful set of lashes. I was amazed at what this mascara could do with only 1 coat. Pretty spectacular! The formula is pretty thick so it’s best to work quickly and settle with only 2 coats of mascara if you can help it. If you go for a third you may end up with clumps of mascara. Hehe. See what I did there? 😎

There is a bit of downfall to this mascara though. I found that it tends to flake over time. It had a hard time lasting throughout an 8 hour work day. I would catch it flaking away a few hours later. Ugh. And we all know how much I hate flaking mascaras. The best way to prevent this is to apply as few coats as possible. So instead of 2, I found myself applying just 1 coat and I didn’t have the problem as much. But it kinda sucks because while my lashes looked great with 1 coat, they looked amaziiiiing with 2. *sigh*

I’m guessing the waterproof version of this should straighten that out a bit. I can’t speak on if the mascara will help thicken and strengthen lashes over time since I’ve only been testing it for a week. And as gorgeous as the packaging is, that dress of hers is very fragile. She got all scrapped up in my purse.

Revlon Lash Potion mascara

Boo.

Do I recommend it?: I do! But only if you’re in the market for a volumizing mascara. I think it’s great for short term wear if you don’t mind messing around with the excess mascara on the wand. And of course if you buy this mascara from CVS/pharmacy, it’s applicable for those awesome Extrabucks Rewards.

So Revlon still hasn’t fixed the “lack of a stopper” issue in their mascaras. Womp. But this is still a stellar mascara.

Mascara Monday: Clinique High Impact Waterproof mascara

DSC_7201

Look who has a new mascara! And a waterproof one at that. Just in time for summer, the folx at Clinique were so gracious to shoot me this mascara to test drive. I plan on doing a ton of time at the beach this season (yes y’all – I am a total beach babe) and I’m hoping that I can find a mascara that can accomodate my obsession with boogie boarding self.

Let’s see how this one did…

DSC_7204

Price: $16 at Clinique counters and at Clinique.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 2.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Instant volume and length that resists flaking, clumping, smudging. Our waterproof version of High Impact Mascara can stand up to heat, humidity, an active day. Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Ophthalmologist tested, too.” (source)

The Truth: Decent brush, okay performance but waterproof? Meh.

What I Loved About It: The formula is pretty groovy.

What I Didn’t Like: It was far too flaky for a waterproof mascara.

Overall: FACT: Clinique usually has pretty decent mascaras. And you wouldn’t know it unless you were a Clinique fan because this brand always comes off as being so modest to me. Other brands love to brag about what they do well, but no, not Clinique. I was all kinds of excited to try this mascara because I usually have great experiences with their mascaras. Well, I hate to say it but this one wasn’t so hot.

And it wasn’t the wand’s fault because the wand is actually the best part about this mascara. See…

DSC_7207

Yep. It’s a nice one. It does well at getting those smaller lashes and bottom lashes. It isn’t the most ideal mascara for volumizing but we don’t care about that because this is a waterproof mascara. All we care about is waterproofness. And that’s the thing. It just isn’t there. And that makes me sad.

Formula-wise, the mascara had a bit of glossiness to you. I liked it. It went on well and I didn’t have any issues with trying to get it evenly coat the lashes. It’s a lightweight formula and I didn’t notice any significant boost in my lashes’ appearance. Very little volume and not much length. Like I said, none of that really mattered. But the mascara totally disappointed me in that it didn’t really seem like a waterproof mascara. It flaked a bit throughout the day and after a few splashes of water in the face tests, it seemed to just wipe away. Nooooooo!!

I’ve tried better waterproof mascaras. This one isn’t horrible but I know that Clinique can do better than this. The mascara is still fairly decent because you do get a liiiiittle length.

Do I recommend it?: Meh. Only if you realllly need to try something new. But don’t expect anything spectacular from this one. Your lashes may get a bit of added length but that’s about it.

Have you ever tried any mascaras from Clinique? Doesn’t it suck when a waterproof mascara really isn’t waterproof? Grr!

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Telescopic Shocking Extensions mascara

I can’t even remember the last time I tried out a mascara from L’Oreal. It’s been monthssss. They don’t seem to be big on releasing as many mascaras as some of the other brands. Which I guess is okay. Better a few big hitters than a ton of sorry mascaras, ya know? This mascara came in a CVS Beauty Bag that I got for review.

Let’s see how this one did…

DSC_6296

DSC_6302

Price: $7 or so at drugstores including Walmart.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Shocking Extensions Mascara has a lash-hugging brush with 200 bristles and a shape that simulates the eyelid to capture and precisely define every lash, even the smallest ones. In one motion lashes are separated, intensified, and look shockingly lengthened for an intense make-up result. The brush grips and lengthens the look of each lash for extraordinary lash extension effect–no lash is left behind. Its liquid extension formula coats and lengthens lashes from root to tip for shocking length and intensity.” (source)

The Truth: I’ll never complain about this wand. It is awesooooome.

What I Loved About It: Yeah, the wand. It is perfect for separating super wonky lashes.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s not the best mascara for if you want super volumized lashes.

Overall: Hi L’Oreal! So nice to tango with you again. It’s been so long, darling. First, let’s talk about the one aspect of this mascara that I’m obsessed with – the wand.

DSC_6306

Those little comb bristles literally comb the lashes to perfection. I’ve got cranky wonky lashes that neeeeever go in the same direction. This wands helps my lashes straighten up and act right with ease. I’ve always loved mascara wands like these. Because even though they don’t provide insane volume, they still make my lashes stand out. A wand like this gives them definition. Especially if you have puny lashes.

Formula-wise, this stuff was a bit on the thick side. It had a bit of a matte finish which is neither good nor bad. Okay wait, I lied. One of the downfalls to matte finishes is that they tend to smudge and smear a bit. Especially in high-moisture situations. I’m pretty sure they have a waterproof version of this mascara and I’d roll with that one over this one. I experienced a bit of flaking and I think that can be attributed to the formula. Your best bet with applying this mascara is to apply 1 coat, wait a few seconds and then apply the second coat. The sooner the first coat dries, the greater the chance you have of some flakin’.

Otherwise, I’m a fan of this mascara. Two coats is all you’ll need and it should last throughout the day. Don’t expect a ton of volume but if you’re looking for definition and a mascara to straighten out those lashes, this is your gal.

Do I recommend it?: Yep! I’m impressed. Granted, you really can’t go wrong when you have a mascara wand like this, but still…it is definitely a mascara worth trying if you’re in the market for a new one.

Are you a lover of mascara wands like this?

Mascara Monday: Essence Multi-Action Blackest Black mascara

DSC_2958

Soooo I’m back with an Essence mascara. I am slowly but surely making my way through these mascaras. They don’t seem to release as many mascaras as other brands and that’s totally okay with me. It gives me time to mess around with ’em a bit. Next on the list is this kid…

DSC_2972

Price: $3.99 at Ulta and Ulta.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 2.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “This multi-talented lash lover offers an innovative brush and unique texture with carbon black pigments to ensure more volume, length and curve for the deepest black lashes! A must-have for dramatic eyes!!” (source)

The Truth: It is indeed a super black mascara but man, it’s a flaky son of a gun. Or daughter. I’m not sure of its gender.

What I Loved About It: I’ll always love Essence’s affordability.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s flaky and just doesn’t seem to volumize or lengthen well.

Overall: Ah well. You win some and loose some. My feelings aren’t too hurt that this mascara wasn’t all that. I’ve come across better Essence mascaras and so the disappointment in this one didn’t last too long. For one thing, I’m not a fan of this type of wand.

DSC_2971

I mean, it’s nothing to HATE. I just don’t love it. I find wands like these so tricky to use with my short and wonky lashes. Those with longer and plush lashes will have much better luck. Sweeping through the lashes is challenging if your lashes aren’t all that long but of course it is possible. It just takes some time and sometimes when you only have 5 minutes to do your face in the morning, you don’t really want to deal with super large wands.

But once you get past the wand, actual application is decent. The formula is nice without being too thick or too watery. In fact, I was confused as to why the formula flaked so much because I didn’t find it to be too thick. Typically thicker mascaras lead to flakiness. I’ll tell you one thing though, Essence calling this mascara Blackest Black is dead on. It is a super dark mascara that has the potential to really bring some darkness to the lashes. After 1 coat, I could really see a difference in terms of how dark my lashes looked.

But after 2 coats, I only saw minimal volume and not much length. In fact, if anything my lashes just clumped up a bit. Boo hoo. Hours later my lashes, the mascara seemed to disappear from my lashes and flake away. And nothing sucks more than a flaky mascara. *sigh* So while the mascara does have the potential to give super dark and lush lashes, its inability to last around for hours just wasn’t up my alley.

Doesn’t look like much, uh? And note the flakiness under my eyes. No bueno.

Do I recommend it?: Nope. But worry not. Essence has plenty of other awesome mascaras.

Have you tried any Essence mascaras?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline The Rocket by Volum’Express mascara

DSC_6002

Oooooh yeah, Maybelline has a new mascara in town. I’m mad late on reviewing it but ya know…that whole “having a baby” thing kinda threw me off a bit, ya know? 😎 But alas, here we are with a review of one of the most popular mascaras to hit shelves this season.

DSC_5997

Price: $5.94 at Walmart and Walmart.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Washable Mascara’s patented supersonic brush with micro bristles loads on big, sleek volume instantly. Its fast-glide formula keeps lashes smooth. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Washable Mascara: The most explosive, beautiful lashes ever, 8x bigger, Explosive volume in rocket time, Smoother Zero clumps” (source)

The Truth: It’s not my absolute favorite Maybelline mascara but it’s okay.

What I Loved About It: Super awesome wand that helps with separating wonky lashes. .

What I Didn’t Like: It didn’t volumize the way I really needed it to.

Overall: This mascara totally took me by surprise. I felt like I just reviewed a Volum’Express mascara not too long ago and then along comes The Rocket. The hype didn’t seem to be as prevalent with this one than with other Volum’Express releases. I mean, think about it – the Falsies was everywhere. This kid? Not so much. The thing is, Rocket’s claims aren’t all that spectacular and she isn’t toting any special tricks. She’s just another ‘VolumExpress mascara that promises volume and a pretty awesome wand to boot.

And the wand IS awesome.

DSC_6005

It’s an awesome wand if you really need to separate your lashes. I mean, this baby gets them out there. This is actually my favorite kind of mascara if my lashes are doin’ crazy thangs and looking all wonky. Which, by the way, is all the time. And as great as this wand is when it comes to separating, it isn’t so hot in the volumizing department. Plusher wands are better in this regard.

But that doesn’t mean The Rocket sucks. She doesn’t. I just think her volumizing power is mediocre. Lengthening too. Her strength does lie in longevity though. I didn’t get the waterproof version of this mascara but I found that it did a darn good job at lasting throughout the day without any flakes or smudges. Which is always HUGE in my book.

So if you’re bored enough and just want to try something new, this is a great mascara to holla at. But if you’ve got huge expectations, meh…brace yourself to be a tad bit disappointed. Or, Maybelline’s the Falsies mascara. That kid is truly the winner in the Volum’Express department.

Do I recommend it?: Only if you reallllllly want to try something new.

Whatcha think? Have you tried this mascara yet? Is it just me or do some of the other ‘VolumExpress mascaras seem to do a better job?

Mascara Monday: Prestige My Biggest Lashes Big Lash Effect mascara

So remember that time I reviewed Prestige’s My Waterproof Lashes mascara? Well, My Biggest Lashes Big Lash Effect is the mascara that came alongside that one. I got those 2 mascaras in a pack together. Prestige Cosmetics has yet to really woo me with their mascaras but I’ve still got hope. Some brands do great in other beauty bits and just aren’t all that in mascaras. I can live with that. But come on, I need at least ONE good mascara from ya, Prestige. Help a sista out.

DSC_3672

*crosses fingers*

Price: $6.50 at Ulta and Ulta.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: “Full, plush brush coats each lash, intense, long lasting color, one coat application” (source)

The Truth: *yawn* This mascara put me to sleep. There’s nothing to it.

What I Loved About It: It’s got a decent price point.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s one of those mascaras that doesn’t provide much of anything at one coat or 3 coats.

Overall: Oh boy. I’m disappointed, Prestige. I expected this one to be a winner. I mean, when you give a mascara a name like My Biggest Lashes, you kinda expect some kind of ooomph. I got anything but that from this mascara. And that made me sad. The wand is a plush brush and it’s not one of my favorite type of wands.

DSC_3676

Can you effectively apply mascara with it? Absolutely. I did, however, struggle with the mascara’s formula. It’s not too thick or too thin but it’s got a barely there feel to it. Okay, it’s not invisible but it’s the kind of mascara that when you apply a coat to your lashes, you look at your lashes to see if you actually applied anything. It’s weird stuff, I tell ya and I can’t make this stuff up. I think it’s the large brush and its inability to pick up enough mascara that created this problem. Either way, I just know that after I would apply 3 coats, I would have some serious “barely there” mascara-covered lashes. Boo.

And even when you get the mascara on, it seems to slowly disappear throughout the day and as it disappears, it flakes in the process. Boo and double-boo. I don’t have much else to say about this mascara except that even though it’s on the cheaper side, it may not be worth your pennies.

Do I recommend it?: Nope. I’d pass by this one.

Have you tried any  Prestige mascaras? Whatcha think about this one?
