Mascara Monday: Sephora Outrageous Volume mascara

DSC_3459

I get so embarrassed sometimes. Like, why don’t I review more Sephora mascaras? It makes no sense. I think sometimes I get so caught up with the bigger and more popular brands that I forget about Sephora’s products. I suck, I know. I’ll be stepping my game up in 2013. Don’t worry. In the meantime, I’m excited to show off this adorable little Bewitching Eye Kit.

The kit itself includes the Sephora Outrageous Volume mascara and also a mini-versions of glitter eyeliner/mascara and a black eyeliner.

An adorable little kit for only $20. Not too shabby.

DSC_3452

Price: $15 for mascara alone and $22 for the kit at Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “This mascara’s unique triple load brush intensely coats lashes in one easy stroke for a full, luscious look. The thick, Ultra Black formula is enriched with hyaluronic acid—an ingredient recognized for its moisturizing properties. Use the brush’s reservoirs to intensify lashes from root to tip, separate lashes with the “spiked” areas, or achieve a curved effect by pressing the brush lightly against the tips of the upper lashes.” (source)

The Truth: Whoa whoa whoa! My lashes are nice and looooong!

What I Loved About It: I love the richness of the mascara and I love the volumizing aspects.

What I Didn’t Like: It found it to be a bit flaky and I really hate the wand.

Overall: The holiday season is a brewin’ and so I am all up in the spirit. Hence why you see candy cane-related backdrops ‘n such. Anyway, I’m not sure if this kit is a staple for Sephora or if it’s just around for the holidays but either way, I think it’s a good value. The mascara is reasonably priced at $15 and for an extra $7 you can get some additional eye trinkets. Way to go, Sephora!

But of course, most of what I’ll be talking about will be about the mascara itself. And to start off, I just wasn’t a fan of the wand.

DSC_3466

The wand really sucks and it’s unfortunate because the mascara is really a good mascara. What’s not to like about the wand? There’s no stopper in the tube so I have to deal with the excess mascara that ends up being wiped away. I ended up with far too much mascara on the wand each time I pulled it out. It would take me 2-3 minutes just to remove the gunk and get started on my lashes. Yeah. Hate when that happens. Once I’d remove the gunk, the plastic bristles didn’t seem to be long enough. But they were workable. I also appreciated the little round ball at the end of the mascara. I find those particularly useful for applying mascara to the lower lashes. When, of course, they aren’t covered with 3 feet of mascara gunk. I’m exaggerating, of course but that’s what it feels like each time I remove the wand from the tube.

So yeah, if you can get past the gunk on the mascara wand, everything else is pretty pleasant. The mascara has a thicker formula but it’s easy to apply on the lashes. In fact, it’s the kind of formula that really makes the lashes look beautiful after only 1 coat. I love when this happens! I’ve been curling my lashes lately and this mascara has done a really good job at holding the curl.

Length-wise, the mascara delivers and it does darn good with volume too. In  fact, it’s SO good that I think you can get away with applying 2 coats tops. I tried to push it to the limit with 3 coats but I ended up with clumps…of mascara. And while the mascara does a good job at lasting on the lashes, it did flake on me a bit after 8 hours or so. Which is almost expected but still something to not. Overall, I was super impressed. How many other Sephora mascaras have I been sleeping on?

Do I recommend it?: Yep. It’s a pretty awesome mascara.

Have you ever tried any of Sephora’s mascaras? Are they all this kind of awesome?

Mascara Monday: Physicians Formula Organic wear 100% Natural Lash Boosting mascara

DSC_1618

It’s been a very long time since I’ve reviewed something from Physicians Formula. I think the last thing I featured was their amaziiiiiing and super cool lipgloss that lights up. And I am still using it. I’m serious. It is currently taking up residency in my makeup bag. I know how to be a faithful makeup user. Hmm mmmm. Anywho, they’ve got a a new mascara on the scene and I’ve had my up’s and down’s with PF’s mascara’s. Let’s see where this one stands…

DSC_1601

Price: $9.95 at drugstores and at PhysiciansFormula.com
Packaging (brush wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: Per packaging…

DSC_1603

DSC_1612

The Truth: It kinda sucks. I know, I know. I hate to say it but y’all want me to be honest, don’t you?

What I Loved About It: I also adore PF’s packaging. Especially their mascaras. So cute, right?

What I Didn’t Like: It’s like a lot of PF mascaras in that a few hours after you apply it, it just disappears. Freaky.

Overall: Oh boy. Let’s go ahead and get this over with. Reviewing this mascara will be like quickly ripping a band-aid off. I just want it to be quick. First, let’s talk about about some of the awesome qualities and claims about this mascara. Ready? According to PhysiciansFormula.com, this mascara rocks because of the following reasons:

-Hypoallergenic. Fragrance free. Ophthalmologist approved. Gluten Free.
-100% of the Total Ingredients are from Natural Origin.
-44% of the Total Ingredients are from Organic Farming.
-100% saw enhanced lashes INSTANLY!
-1st Ever 100% Natural Lash Boosting formula enhances the appearance of lash length, thickness and volume for dramatic lashes instantly and long-term.

100% out of how many? These are the questions I have when I see percentages. But anyway…those are some serious claims, uh? I’ve got to give it up to Physicians Formula because when it comes to omitting a ton of yucky stuff from their products, they’re good at that. If, of course, you care about that sort of thing. But when it comes to performance this mascara sucks and that makes me sad. I can blame part of the suck-age on the wand.

DSC_1630

No, it’s not horrible and yes, I’ve seen worse and it’s not its size that bothers me. It’s those super itty bitty teeny tiny bristles. They are SO small. Ridiculously small. Even if you’ve got super long lashes, getting this wand to the base of your lashes will be quite the challenge. And it’s a time-consuming challenge that many of us who like to spend no more than 10 minutes on their makeup have no time for. If you can manage to coat those lashes with mascara, you’re left with a wee of thickness to the lashes. And just a wee bit. Lengthening was meh and I saw a little more volumizing. Enough volumizing to make me nod me head and say, “Hmm. Not bad.”

Hours later, though, I’d glance in the mirror and notice that I didn’t have no any mascara. None. The mascara simply did a disappearing act. This doesn’t surprise me. It has happened before with many natural mascaras. They aren’t always the best with longevity. I’m not sure what ingredient(s) it is that helps mascaras stay around longer but without it, wearing a mascara is almost point-less. I’ve experienced natural mascaras that actually stick around longer than a few hours without flaking or smudging away but I can’t say the same about this baby.

It’s a shame too because gosh…ain’t it cute?

Do I recommend it?: Nope. It simply won’t stick around. And I’m pretty sure it would do worse in super hot and sticky environments.

Any natural mascara lovers in the house? Have you ever experienced this before?

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Crusher mascara

DSC_1722

Guess who’s back in the hizooooouse? LashBlast! If I went around polling 10 of my friends, at least half of them are going to say they LOVE this mascara. And of course I agree. I’ve been a Lash Blast lover for quite some time. And I don’t even have to tango with LashBlast Length or Lash Blast 24HR or LashBlast Fusion. I’m okay rollin’ with the original. But in case you needed something new to your beauty boudoir, CoverGirl is gracing us with another Lash Blast, baby. And this one is totally made for me. It’s like THEE Clumps of Mascara anti-clumps mascara. Get it? Get it? I’m so weak from excitement yo.

DSC_1716

Price: $8.99 at drugstores
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Mascara by LashBlast features an innovative curved brush that builds 200% more volume with zero clumps, even after 30 strokes. The Clump Crusher brush custom fits to the curve of the eye allowing for root to tip volume while tight spacing between the bristles stops clump formation before it can start.” (per press release)

The Truth: It really didn’t give me any clumps. I’m serious. Not even one!

What I Loved About It: This mascara’s formula is incredibly build-able. So much so that if caught me by surprise.

What I Didn’t Like: A super build-able formula means that your lashes may be be a bit heavy and may flake a little too.

Overall: Hey there LashBlast! So nice to see you again. I usually complain when brands come out with multiple versions of the same mascara but I don’t know, there’s something wonderful about LashBlast. It’s kinda like that Aunt who is a bit obnoxious but always comes by bearing gifts. Like…how can you hate her? Auntie LashBlast shocked me with this formula. Simply because I didn’t think there would be any more LashBlast formulas. We’ve seen Volume, 24HR, Length and Fusion. How can you make better better? Wellll, you create an awesome clump-free formula and give it a captivating wand to boot. Duh!!!

DSC_1735

DSC_1738

Okay, so pleaseeeee don’t ask me to compare THIS LashBlast to the other LashBlast kids. I am going to review this one as if the others don’t exist. Each mascara totes its own claim and since this one promises to volumizes without ANY clumping, well then….that’s what I’m going to judge this baby on. First off, formula-wise, the formula has a nice consistency. I didn’t find it to be too thick and getting a nice even coat was easy peasy. One of the aspects about the LashBlast mascaras that people seem to love so much is the wand. Despite its girth, it has always performed really well for me. I never like to recommend this mascara for those with smaller lids and lashes (as they may find application to be a bit tricky and daunting) but the truth is, if you can handle the challenge, this wand does a great job at at grabbing those tiny lashes and coating them evenly with mascara. This wand differs from the other LashBlast wands because it has a bit of a curve to it but I didn’t notice it making or breaking my experience.

Now for the formula and its claim to be clump-free…first of all, how crazy is a claim is that? Pretty ambitious of ya, uh, CoverGirl? But if anyone can do it, it’s them so I was so excited to push this mascara to the limit. For the record, most mascara wearers seem to be okay with 1, 2 and maybe 3 coats. In real life circumstances, you’ll probably never need to apply more than 3 coats. But I’m a crazed mascara lover so my attempting to apply 10 coats of mascara shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Surprisingly, the mascara holds up REALLY well after 3 coats. The trick to get added volume is to make sure that your lashes don’t dry in between coats. That means you apply. Wait a few seconds. Apply again. Wait a few seconds. And repeat. If you try to apply and give breaks in between those coats, you’ll end up with dry lashes, a wet wand and a bit of a disaster when it comes to flakiness. Trust me on this. I applied up to 10 coats of this mascara and around the 10th coat, it STILL didn’t clump. A few of my lashes melded together a bit. And by 10 coats they felt heavier than I would have liked but the point is…no major clumps. AND decent length and awesome volume. I say that’s a win!

Do I recommend it?: Um yesss!! Granted, I’m sure you won’t ever be applying 10 coats of mascara like me but if you like buildable formulas (and you’ve been a fan of previous LashBlast mascaras) you are going to love this one.

What do you think LashBlast lovers? Is this one a hit or do you prefer some of the other versions?

Mascara Monday: Urban Decay Big Fatty mascara

DSC_1433

Urban Decay does A LOT of things right when it comes to cosmetics. How I am just now reviewing the new and improved Big Fatty is beyond me. I reviewed the previous one years ago (back when my mascara reviews were new and I sucked at ‘em) and now I’m back with an updated review. This review will replace the old Big Fatty mascara review. Which is a good thing because I like this version A LOT better.

P.S. – I got a lightbox this weekend and I’ve been messin’ around with some shots. Please excuse ‘em if things look a little funky.

DSC_1434

Price: $20 at Sephora and Sephora.com
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “This new formula is buildable, virtually weightless, smudge-proof, flake-proof, and provides ultra-long wear. Unlike other thickening mascaras, which can clump, this high-tech, moisturizing formula includes hemp seed oil, vitamin E, jojoba oil, and purisilk SPB to condition lashes and maintain a soft feel. The uniquely shaped, big molded brush actually latches onto lashes to load mascara evenly to each lash. The most exciting thing: The tip of the brush is covered in small bristles, specially made to deftly handle your tiny lower and corner lashes. No need to buy a special mascara for your corner lashes.” (source)

The Truth: I especially love it because it’s a preservative-free mascara. Woo hoooo!

What I Loved About It: You’ll get pretty good length and volume with only two coats.

What I Didn’t Like: The wand is a bit tricky to use.

Overall: Well, well, welllllll. Funny story about this mascara. I was telling my friend that  I was wearing Big Fatty and she goes into this long and hilarious story about how her family used to call her “Big Fatty” up until a few years ago. The crazy thing is, she’s super slim. But she’s a slim gal that can put away a plate of food in minutes. So yeah. Funny stuff.

Like most Urban Decay products, this mascara is free from parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances and pthalates.  So if you’ve got eyes that are super sensitive, you’ll appreciate this mascara little bit more. Now when it comes to the wand, the first glance of it may terrify you.

DSC_1441

Because it totally terrified me. It’s a great wand but it’s a victim of what I like to call the “Black Abyss” effect. Some mascaras have great wands but the tube has a huge hole that makes removing some of the mascara residue difficult.

See what I mean?

DSC_1442

I hate when this happens but it doesn’t always mean that a mascara is doomed. If you have a few minutes to wipe away the excess mascara sludge, you can reveal enough of the wand and its bristles to sweep it through the lashes. So yeah, mascaras like this do require a little more time but I think the results are worth it. I did struggle with using the ball on the end to apply mascara to the inner lashes though. I couldn’t remove enough mascara to make it happen without getting mascara all over my lids.

Formula-wise, it’s on the thicker side but mainly because it’s a volumizing mascara. On the good side, this means if you’re a fan of only applying one 1 of mascara, you can do with no problems. On the bad side, this means that if you aren’t careful when applying more than 1 coat of mascara, you may end up with some clumps. And I certainly wouldn’t recommend more than 2 coats with this baby.

So after you’ve removed the excess mascara from the wand and decided if you’re going to apply 1 or 2 coats, the actual application is simple. The bristles are nice and stiff and make it so you can sweep through the lashes while separating them. Any mascara that allows separating is the mascara for me! With just 1 coat, lashes look noticeably darker and plumper. The second coat just adds the icing on the cake and you’re left with nice volumized lashes with a bit of length to ‘em that will last all day. Yep, although it’s not a waterproof mascara, it does darn well at lasting throughout the day without any smudging and flaking.

Mascara Monday: Too Faced Lashgasm mascara

DSC_1537.NEF

Sometimes I go a bit overboard with my photo editing. If I could I would give every picture the 70’s effect. You know…because I’m old skool like that. But I won’t do it to y’all. But anywho – I can’t remember the last time I reviewed a Too Faced mascara. It’s been forev! I’m still in love with that gorgeous palette of theirs and I was super excited to play around with a mascara that has been around for quite some time. Except I’m late to the game on it. Which sucks considering I SHOULD be up on the new mascaras game, right? Ah well.

DSC_1527.NEF

DSC_1529.NEF

Price: $21 at Sephora and Sephora.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “A voluptuous, fluffing mascara that conditions as it thickens to create dramatically long lashes with intense color.” (source)

The Truth: Dang, this wand is awesome!!

What I Loved About It: Usually wands like these means you’ll get more lengthening than volume but it turns out that this wand + the formula makes for fantastic volumizing!

What I Didn’t Like: It’s a bit on the flaky side.

Overall: Hi Too Faced Lashgasm! I think I love you. And I know we just met and all but dang, you’re some kind of awesome. And as for youuuuuu Clumps readers, why didn’t y’all beg me to review this mascara earlier? How am I just now discovering its awesome? I mean, what rock have I been living under? Better late than never I suppose but man. I hate sleeping on fantastic mascara. Especially when I’ve been reviewing so many medicore ones as of late.

Let’s rap about the wand..

DSC_1541.NEF

First of all, it’s pretty freaking awesome. Do you see that? Do you see how stiff and long those bristles are? They make for great separation and lengthening. And usually I see wands like this and I’m immediately like “Oh, it’ll be great for lengthening but it’ll probably be just so so in the volumizing department.” WRONG! This mascara surprised me in that it did spectacular with both lengthening and volumizing. Niiiiice.

I guess it’s the formula that makes it so fantastic. There’s nothing groundbreaking about it at first glance but when it is applied to the lashes, it instantly starts thickening up. Which, okay, a lot of mascaras do this, right? Lashgasm not only gives you the nice thick volume but then you’ve got that great brush that helps with separating the lashes.

It’s like a match made in mascara heaven. This is the perfect mascara for many types of folx. If you’ve got long lashes and just want to plump them up a bit, this will be fantatic. If your lashes are practically invisible and you need length AND volume, bam…you got it, boo. But of course, with the good comes the bad. While the mascara does a fantastic job at lasting throughout the day, you may notice some flaking. Not enough to write it off as insanely flaky but it is definitely something to note.

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Cat Eyes mascara

DSC_1274

Yuuuuuuup! You guessed it. Maybelline has another mascara for us and it’s in the ‘Volum Express family. Okay, even if you have no intentions in trying out this mascara, you can’t deny how adorable that packaging is. Ca-ute, right?

DSC_1268

Price: $5 at Walmart and Walmart.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “Maybelline colossal volume gets a feline edge. Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Cat Eyes Washable Mascara’s collagen formula and claw brush plump and spike out lashes at the corners for a wild cat-eye look. Colossal volume with cat-like corners” (source)

The Truth: The truth is that as much as I love Maybelline (and I loooove Maybelline), I’m a bit over the Volum’ Express bit.

What I Loved About It: That wand is dynamic, yo.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s a great lengthening mascara but if you’re looking for volume, keep a lookin’, sista.

Overall: For once I’ll keep my mouth shut about how annoyed I am that I keep seeing 23,000 different versions of ‘Volum Express. Please realize that this whole “not complaining” thing is so tough for me because I really do get annoyed at…okay, wait. Look at me. I’m complaining. Eek! Let’s move on.

The wand. Yes! The wand!

DSC_1276

The wand is something special. I love everything about this wand. I could do without its curvy nature but I love how nice and stiff the bristles are. This is the perfect mascara wand for people like me. My lashes go alllll over the place and this wand is great for helping to straighten them out. Wands like these are also perfect for those with super itty bitty lashes. You can coat lashes easily and don’t have to worry about poking yourself in the eye because of the huge wand. WIN!

Now, let’s get to the nitty gritty, if I was super over-ambitious, I would try to compare this mascara with some of the other recent ‘Volum Express mascaras. But quite honestly, y’all…I don’t own any of ‘em anymore and I’m too lazy to even think of doing something like that. But hey – at least I’m honest, right? The best thing for mascara reviews is to just review them as if other mascaras didn’t exist. And so for now, we’ll forget about the other 98,000 ‘Volum Express babies out there, okay?

Formula-wise, Cat Eyes impressed me. It’s got a nice and workable formula but after a few strokes on the lashes, I realized that its goal was to lengthen my lashes and not bring about volume. Okay. No biggie. The claims on the packaging are a bit confusing so we’re not really sure WHAT this mascara is supposed to do but yeah, I’m pretty sure its main goal is to help elongate the lashes. Which is does so beautifully. Between the formula not clumping up on me and the stiff bristles of the wand, bringing those lashes out there was easy. And impressive! 1 coat was okay but 2 coats of this mascara really brought my lashes out there and helped to achieve that “wild cat-eye look”. Whatever that means. So yeah, it’s not a bad lengthening mascara. Keep in mind that it ISN’T a waterproof mascara so it does have some issues with lasting for a while. Especially if you have allergies.

And stick with just 2 coats. I found that the formula thickened up a bit too much and brought on some clumping when I attempted a 3rd coat.

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 2 coats

Do I recommend it?: The Falsies ‘Volum Express is hands down my favorite because it’s an intense volume mascara but if you’re looking for something lengthening (or a really cute mascara), I don’t think Cat Eyes will disappoint.

Okay y’all…who has tried this mascara? Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: Prestige My Longest Lashes Pro Lengthening mascara

First things first, beauty gals and girls…this review makes Clumps of Mascara’s 176th mascara review to date. Crazy, right? Yes, I’m patting myself on the back because I do feel it to be quite the accomplishment. And hopefully my parents are proud.

“What is your daughter doing now?”

“Oh well, you know….she reviews mascaras. Exactly 176 to date. Bet your daughter hasn’t done that.”

Okay, I’m being silly but if weren’t for you great folx, I would have stopped reviewing mascaras a looooong time ago. But since the Clumps fam is so great at keeping me up on my toes about which mascaras I should try, just know that I could never leave you. Well…unless I become a millionaire and then I may have to find an editor. Ha!

Anywhoovers, let’s check out this Prestige mascara…

DSC_0873

Price: $7.50 at Ulta.com and you may spot it at Ulta stores.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “No clumps or flakes, just your thickest, longest, biggest lashes ever!” (source)

The Truth: What a nice looking wand. It looks ideal for separating!

What I Loved About It: It really did give me some decent length.

What I Didn’t Like: Meh. The length wasn’t THAT dymanic.

Overall: It’s unlikely that you’ll ever see me willingly purchase a lengthening mascara. The truth is, I don’t really care about length. Volume is my shtick and I’m sticking with it. But I get it – some folx have super tiny lashes and want nothing more than to elongate them a bit so what better way to do that than with a lengthening mascara? I’m so not hatin’ because it makes so much sense to me. Even if I don’t prefer to wear a lengthening mascara regularly. Anyway, the wand on this guy was very niiiiiice.

DSC_0880

That’s the thing about about most lengthening mascaras. The wands are typically nice and slim and have bristles that make it easy to do separate the lashes. This wand was a pleasure to work with. I was able to gently coat the the lashes with mascara with ease. Getting the lashes to look a little longer is always a challenge with lengthening mascaras. I find that you have to go from root to tip and slowly bring the lashes upward. And once you sweep the brush up to the tip of the lashes, I like to HOLD the wand there for a few seconds.

Formula-wise, this mascara was easy to work with. Application was easy and so was removal. I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging and like most GOOD lengthening mascaras, it didn’t clump up on me. I find clumping to be a problem in volumizing mascaras but not so much with lengthening mascaras.

As far as lengthening effectively, it does so pretty well. It’s nothing groundbreaking but it works good enough. I would have loved to see more length but little oomph I saw in my lashes was decent enough. Because the formula was so lightweight, throughout the day my longer lashes seemed to disappear a bit. I HATE when that happens. But still – it’s not a terrible lengthening mascara. Especially if you don’t have crazy expectations and just want a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ without overdoing it.

Do I recommend it?: Sure. Especially if you are already a fan of Prestige mascaras.

Do you prefer lengthening mascaras or volumizing mascaras?

Mascara Monday: Essence Get BIG Lashes Volume Boost Waterproof mascara

Oooh baby baby! It’s an Essence mascara. I love me some Essence products. Have you seen their new swoon-worthy nail polishes? Girl. GIRL! They are hot stuff. I’ve played around with some of their mascaras before too haven’t been too impressed. But the other week I was in Ulta (for no real reason, of course) and came across this mascara. I’m always getting requests to review waterproof mascaras so I decided to give this baby a whirl.

Price: $3.99 at Ulta.com and you may spot it at Ulta stores.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What It Claims: “Essence Get Big! Lashes Mascara. Good things may come in small packages, but bigger is always better when it comes to lashes. Available in the original and waterproof formulas, with the option of two different brushes, this mascara from Essence will make batting your lashes a breeze.” (source)

The Truth: Oh no. I hate to say it but it sucked. Not just a little bit but a lot.

What I Loved About It: Well. Um. It’s affordable!

What I Didn’t Like: It was a hot and flaky mess. To make matters worse, I barely got any noticeable volume. Fail!

Overall: Oh geez. I really do hate writing mascara reviews about mascaras that sucked. But I’ve got to be honest with y’all. It comes with the territory. *sigh* But yeah..this mascara’s performance certainly wasn’t up to par. And it’s a shame really because I find that most of Essence’s products perform really well despite their affordable price tags. I mean, where else can you get decent products for your entire face for under like $10? Yeah. Essence rocks and I’ll continue loving them as a brand but when it comes to this mascara, it’s unlikely that you’ll hear me recommending it.

The wand…

The wand isn’t THAT terrible. I mean, yeah…it’s huge and uncomfortable for those of us who prefer smaller wands. Because the bristles are so large, it’s really hard to comb through the lashes. A wand like this is best suited for guys and gals who have long and thick lashes or those who don’t need to do much separating. My lashes, however….they ALWAYS need some form of separating. It’s difficult to get it with this wand. But it’s not the wand’s fault that I have special needs lashes.

Now let’s rap on the formula. WOW. And not a good WOW either. In first glance and with the first stroke of application, the wand doesn’t appear to be all that bad. It’s got a nice consistency. But with the the huge wand, the formula doesn’t seem to thicken up as well on the lashes. Even after a second coat, I didn’t really notice anything. A third coat showed a bit of omph but still not enough to appease me.

Hours later, I would notice this mascara flaking down my cheek. No bueno. I HATE when this happens. I can tolerate a lot of mascara woes but flaking is just a no no in my book. Flaking also means that the waterproof-ness of the mascara isn’t even that effective. What a waste! With the ginormous wand, flaking formula and ineffective waterproof properties, I’m thinking this isn’t one of Essence’s greatest hits. No worries. I still love you, E. But let’s step that mascara game up a bit, eh?

[NOTE: Okay now, check this out – the camera I used to use for eye close mascara pics has decided to leap to its death. I’m in the process of learning how to take pictures with my DSLR. Sooooooo bare with me, okay? ]

Do I recommend it?: Nopers. Grab one of their awesome polishes instead.

Okay Essence lovers…have you tried this mascara? Or any of Essence’s mascaras? What do you think?
