Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

So who remembers the original Lash Stiletto mascara? I do! I do! That’s because I loved it. I thought it was one of the greatest lengthening mascaras in 2009. A year later and now we have Lash Stiletto’s little sister….Lash Stiletto Voluptuous. Is it just as great? Or does it suck? Click the jump to get the stats!

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

Price: 3 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: Meh… I’m confused. What is it supposed to do?

What I loved about it: I got a good amount of length!

What I didn’t like: I didn’t get any volume and it was a little too clumpy for my liking.

Overall: Well, well well…where to start? First of all…I don’t even know what this mascara is supposed to do. The packaging was extremely vague. So I guess it’s going to give me “incredible length and volume”?? Gee…okay. I guess I’m so used to seeing mascaras with exaggerated claims that it seems strange to see one that doesn’t offer such. I assumed that with it being called “Voluptuous” that it was a volumizing mascara. It was expecting to see full and lush lashes. Negative.

Instead, what I got was length. Which wouldn’t have bothered me had the original Lash Stiletto NOT done that. Accompanying the length was clumps. Boo. Don’t let the website name full you. I’m not really a fan of clumps of mascara. LOL!

Now let’s talk about the wand….

It has what’s called the “plump and stretch brush”. It has a wav-y thing goin’ on and I’m not all that impressed by it really. It doesn’t make applying any easier. It most mimics the Lancome  Hypnose Drama wand but between you and me, I like Lancome’s better. The original Lash Stiletto wand was your average straight wand.

Despite the clumps, it was hard for me to give this mascara a really bad score. I did get A LOT of length. But I’m still disappointed because I wanted some volume. *pouts*

Would I recommend it?: I think you can pass. Unless you are really wanting to try out that the new plump and stretch brush. Other than that,  I don’t think it’s a must have.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

Mascara Monday: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash mascara

This was probably one of the most highly requested mascaras. And I am FINALLY getting to it. Is it worth the hype? Hmmm…

Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got it for $18 at Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
“Bare Escentuals Buxom® Lash Mascara – Blackest Black holds the style of your lashes for a continuous 12 hours with no flakiness. The silky, vitamin-rich formula darkens, lengthens, and thickens from root to tip without ever clumping. Its patented, hourglass-shaped brush is designed to lift and separate every lash while delivering the perfect amount of antioxidant-rich mascara needed for bigger, fuller lashes. “ (source)

The truth:
*yawn* Oh wait….what were we talking about again?
What I loved about it: It’s a green mascara so it lacks:

– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Synthetic Fragrances
– Synthetic Dyes
– Phthalates

That’s pretty cool!

What I didn’t like: It claimed to be a volume mascara but I didn’t see much. That sucks.

Overall: This is one of those mascaras that took me almost a year to review. I’m not sure why. I received SO many requests to review it and just never got around to it. But here we are. I’m not all that impressed with Buxom. Like, at all…. First, let’s take a look at the wand.

This is what they call their hour glass buxom wand. As you can see, the middle of the wand sucks in and if you hold it vertically, it indeed looks like an hourglass. I mentioned in the video that I didn’t see the big deal in this but I guess it’s one of those things that companies like to do to make their wands appear “more unique”. Um yeah…whatever works.

It’s not a bad wand though. The bristles are long enough to effectively grab the lashes so they get an A+ in that area. It does, though, make for tough application in the inner lashes. The end of the wand is rounded and is really hard to get in the corners.

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t get much volume out of this mascara. The lengthening bit was okay but I wasn’t THAT impressed. Perhaps the best thing about this mascara is the fact that it is build-able. And it really doesn’t clump no matter how many coats you apply. But even that was enough to appease me. I needed more length and at least SOME volume.

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

Okay, here’s a far away shot.

The lashes still look a puny to me. Boo!

I can appreciate that a little booklet thingie comes with the mascara though.

It gives neat tricks of how to apply the mascara with their special wand. Nothing that us veteran mascara users don’t know though.

Would I recommend it?: Nope. It’s pretty average and for $18, I think there are better out there.

Until next time…..

Mascara Monday News! *giveaway*

I am SO excited about Clumps’ new website! Mascara review navigation will be so much easier.

But anyway, back to the topic at hand. Here is a quick heads up letting y’all know that for the next 6 weeks, I will be reviewing the following mascaras:

Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash
Maybelline XXL 24HR Bold Intense
Maybelline XXL Curl Recourber
Maybelline XXL Pro Extensions
Maybelline XXL Volume
Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptous

The requests I have been getting to review Maybelline’s newest have been blowing up my inbox. So unless otherwise stated, I’ll be cranking out those reviews. But I’ll need your help. In the left of the website, you’ll see a little poll. It looks like this…

Vote and let me know which one I should review first. I don’t even know where to start.

Also, I accidentally picked up Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto Voluptous in brown. Any brown mascara wearers out there? If you want it, leave your email address in the comment section and I’ll choose someone by Thursday, January 21, 2010 at midnight. Winner will be selected at random and International ladies are free to jump in!

Mascara Monday: Neutrogena Healthy Length mascara

Yay to the first mascara review of 2010! I had a wonderful experience with Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume mascara back in the day. Is Healthy Length just as good?

Neutrogena Healthy Length mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (I got it for $7.99 at Ulta)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “This breakthrough formula with rice protein instantly extends lashes, while nourishing and strengthening lashes to allow them to grow to their fullest potential.” (per packaging)

The truth:
Hmm….not bad.

What I loved about it: This mascara uses what’s called the “Clean Lash Brush”. Per the packaging it “provides a smooth, clump-free application by combing through lashes from root to tip, for outstanding definition and beautiful length”. I don’t know about all of that but it was great with separating my wonky lashes.

And I don’t know if it’s a defect or not but my wand has a gangsta lean to it. I kinda like it though. It makes applying easier.

What I didn’t like: It does flake a bit which is no bueno for contact wearers.

Overall: Well, Neutrogena has won my heart again! They simply come out with really good mascaras. And it’s so unexpected because when you think of mascara brands, you don’t necessarily think of Neutrogena. Let’s talk about the GREATs of this mascara.

It’s build-able: Some people really desire this in a mascara. While it’s not a must for me, I can appreciate the mascara that is such. Healthy Length will look just fine with one coat and it looks even better with 4 coats. Thanks to the great wand, you won’t experience any clumping.

It’s soft: This mascara just doesn’t feel heavy on the lashes. I love that! In fact, it almost feels like your natural lashes.

The packaging ain’t lyin': Look at this…

Isn’t that grand? I’ve seen SO many mascaras that claim to give you 100x your natural length. LOL…or 80% longer lashes. WTF does that mean? I don’t know. But thank you Neutrogena for keepin’ it real.

This baby did tend to flake a bit but I didn’t notice this until the end of the day and it wasn’t so bothersome that I had to remove it.

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Not bad at all!

Would I recommend it?: I would. My lashes got great length and if you’re in the market for a new lengthening mascara, this one isn’t so bad.

Until next time…..

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash

It’s been a while since I’ve played around with a MAC Cosmetics mascara. It’s been a while since I’ve played around with MAC period. Besides, with a name like Zoom Fast Black Lash, it has to be good, right?

MAC Cosmetics’ Zoom Fast Black Lash

Price: 3 out of 5 ($13.00 at MAC stores and
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims: “An intensely rich, deep, carbon black mascara that instantly combs and lifts the lashes for incredible volume and length. A deeper, darker version of the popular Zoom Lash Zoomblack shade.” (source)

The truth:
Wowsers! My lashes look like falsies!

What I loved about it: It gave me super black lashes with lots of length.

What I didn’t like: It was crazy clumpy around the second coat.

Overall: First of all, try saying Zoom Fast Black Lash 4 times fast. I mean, my goodness…what a mouth full, uh? This mascara first debuted on MAC’s Black Style collection this past September. It’s out again and this time it will stay. I reviewed the original Zoomlash here. I would have loved to compare the two. But ZFBL isn’t half bad. The wand makes for great application.

Isn’t that gorgeous? Those tiny bristles mean you can get in the inner corners and lower lashes effortlessly. One of the things I love about this mascara is how intense the black pigment is. It is insane! But it is also one of the contributing factors to the the clumpiness that I experienced at the second coat. It actually does okay with one coat but of course I always have to push it to the limit.

I’d love if they had this in waterproof. And I don’t like how heavy it is. It really seems to weigh down my lashes but I don’t experience much flaking.

You’re best bet with this? Stick with one coat….

Lashes without mascara
(curled lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

See…if it weren’t for the clump factor, my lashes would totally look like falsies.

Ah well….not an epic fail.

Would I recommend it?: I think it’s a great intensity mascara but only if you’re okay with applying one coat. I like build-able mascaras so I wouldn’t repurchase.

Until next time…..

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Queen volume mascara

Nope, it’s not new. You probably haven’t seen any commercials for this mascara in a while….if ever. I am huge fan of CoverGirl’s Queen line. Did the mascara impress me? Hmm….

CoverGirl Queen Volume mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 ($7.00-ish at drugstores)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: The packaging…

The truth:
Eh…it’s not BAD.

What I loved about it: It gave a good amount of volume.

What I didn’t like: The wand was massive. I’m so not a fan of wands like this:

Overall: I didn’t have have high expectations for this baby. And I guess that’s a good thing because it really didn’t let me down. When I think of CoverGirl mascaras, my mind always flashes back to the fabulousness that is Lash Blast. CoverGirl got it right with that mascara. Don’t get me wrong, Queen isn’t “bad”. It’s just an average mascara. Now and days mascaras are vibrating and have funky wands and colors and well, it doesn’t look like CG Queen volume can compete.

The larger wand makes for difficult application. For ladies with smaller lids and lashes, y’all will endure somewhat of a struggle. This wand doesn’t work too well with getting in the corners either.

In the volumizing department, it fairs well. In fact, I was shocked at the amount of volume that I got. I didn’t see much length but the volume was enough for me. No real major problems either. *yawn* It works. It works well. But don’t don’t expect to be blown away. And if you’re looking for just a bit of volume and don’t need any tricks….you may like this one. But if you’re like me and want fireworks after applying a new mascara…NEXT!

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Only if you find it on sale or just have a general interest on how it works. I think there are better ones out there. But if you do end up getting it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed?

What do you think about CoverGirl’s Queen volume? A fan?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Korres Provitamin B5 and Rice Bran mascara

Jasmine rice. Check! Brown rice. Check! Rice and beans. Oh yeah! I love me some rice, y’all. This starch just makes me smile. Never would have thought that I would be reviewing a mascara that has rice in it though. Leave it to Korres to come up with such. Ahhh Korres…a brand I have dabbled in and have yet to formally introduce to the Clumps fam. No better time like the present. Introducing….

Korres Provitamin B5 and
Rice Bran mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($18.00)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims:“Lash-strengthening mascara naturally volumizes thin and brittle lashes, while adding length and deep pigment
• Nourishes lashes with a non-clumping buildable formula, providing maximum lash health
• Provitamin B5, a proven natural hair strengthener, improves both the length and number of lashes, treating them while adding drama to the eye
• Rice Bran natural extract expands (just like rice does in water) to provide maximum lash length, volume, and fullness. “(source)

The truth:I am totally impressed!

What I loved about it: Is that volume I see?

What I didn’t like: It has a plant-y smell but this is to be expected from natural mascaras. No big problem but I can see how it may bother others.

Overall: Well, I don’t know what else to say other than I’m impressed. No, really…this is a dynamic mascara. I was sent this mascara some time ago and it sat and sat for months before I even touched it. By the time I went to grab it, it had dried out. Off to Sephora I went to purchase it for myself. I didn’t have high expectations because well…just check out the review of my first natural mascara here. This baby blew me away. I love the volume that it gave me. I didn’t get a TON of length but enough to keep me quiet. My lashes also remained soft and weightless.

Buuuut, if I had to change one thing about it, it would be the wand.

It doesn’t make for the easiest application. Especially if you have smaller lashes and lids. I would love to see this with a lash comb-esque kind of wand. It would make for better separation and enhanced length.

But other than that, I’m sold! Unlike other natural mascaras, this one was able to withstand Floridian humidity without flaking or just oozing off of my lids. Oh…and yes, it does smell funka-licious. It doesn’t bother me though. It’s the price you pay if you’re looking for a natural mascara. Aaaand, it comes in different colors including grey green. Now that’s dope.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?:I do! I receive a great deal of emails from ladies who are looking for natural mascaras and this is one I would definitely recommend. It works and although the price is a little steep, I think it’s worth it.Has anyone tried this mascara?

Whatcha think?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara

Here’s a mascara that was requested ages ago! Now I’ve heard of volume mascaras. And colored mascaras. And waterproof mascaras. But GLOSSY mascaras? I mean shouldn’t “gloss” only be used when talking about lippies? I don’t knowww…let’s see how this train rolls.

Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($14.00)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Gel-based formula defines lashes naturally. Lengthens, glosses, enhances. Lashes stay silky, pliant, clump and flake-free through multiple coats.” (source)

The truth: Well, what do ya know? It really is glossy!

What I loved about it: I gave me a good amount of length.

What I didn’t like: But I would have loved more volume.

Overall: When someone first told me that I should try a glossy mascara, I thought they were trying to be funny. I mean, honestly…what does that mean? A mascara with gloss? Uh? Wha? It sounds funny in speech but honestly…..this is a pretty cool mascara.

But you’d have to ask yourself…”When would I ever need to use a glossy mascara?” I couldn’t answer that question. From far away, you really can’t tell the difference between a glossy mascara and an un-glossy one. The silky effect is pretty cool but I guess I don’t see its point.

But who cares? There are a lot of “Uh?” products in the beauty world that I love! Application of this mascara was just so so. The wand was just…well….no me gusta.

It’s just….well, I guess its intentions are to coat and not separate and that’s fine but, hmmm but it wasn’t the easiest thing to use. I had to really press the wand up against my lashes to get a good amount of mascara on them.

BUT–after that ordeal, all else was easy as pie. I didn’t experience any flaking or clumpiness. It’s a light weight mascara so it doesn’t make you feel like you have 3 lb weights on your lashes. Cool!

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Ummm…not for anyone in particular. I mean, if you happen to grab it, I think you’ll like it. But it’s not a must have.

Has anyone tried this mascara?

And when would you ever be in the mood for glosssy lashes? Hmm….
