Mascara Monday: Rimmel The Max Volume Flash mascara

Rimmel’s The Max Volume Flash is the winner of the “What mascara should I review next?” poll. A good 362 of y’all voted and 125 folx (about 34%) said they wanted to see what Rimmel’s newest had to offer in all of its hot pink goodness.

Your wish is my command!

Peep the review…

Rimmel “The Max” Volume Flash

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $5.00 at Walgreens )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: ….from the packaging.

The truth:
The wand almost scared me but the truth is…it didn’t! It breezed right through my lashes.

What I loved about it: It gave me some good length AND volume.

What I didn’t like: Hmm…what’s not like to like?

Overall: I have reviewed and been impressed with other Rimmel mascaras. Rimmel ‘Glam Eyes Lash Flirt received a 5. Have you seen the wand on that thing? Amazing! Then there’s Sexy Curves and the regular ‘Glam Eyes. All of which have high ratings. So needless to say, I am a fan of Rimmel’s mascaras. Let’s talk about what I love most about them…

Their wands!

The Max Volume Flash has a pretty large wand that can be intimidating at first glance. See…

But it has characteristics that puts other large wands to shame. The bristles are stiff enough to glide through your lashes. And although the photos don’t show it, the bristles somewhat flatten out toward the end. Maybe this photo will give you a better idea of what I’m talking about.

See it now? I love this little detail! If you have smaller lashes/lids and have issues with larger wands, The Max Volume Flash allows for you to press up against your lashes comfortably. The only issue with that is you may end up with mascara on your lid. But the volume you get is worth it. In the video I talk about how to can make for easy clean up when that happens.

I did experience clumps with added coats but when I stuck with a good two coats….I was fine. The lengthening factor is pretty dope too which was a nice little surprise since this is supposed to be a volumizing mascara.

No smudging or flaking but then again that has never been an issue for Rimmel mascaras. What can I say? They are simply one of the best drugstore mascaras I have ever used.

Would I recommend it?: Oh yeah….cheap AND it works? Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

Have you tried Rimmel’s newest yet? What do you think?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: YSL’s ‘Volume Effet Faux Cils’ Luxurious mascara

‘ello there, darlings! And did everyone have a wonderful weekend? Enjoy Halloween? I spent mine at Bayside in Miami with the BFF and cousins. As much as I love the North, I also love this unseasonably warm winter in Central and South Florida. 90 degrees in November is SO what’s hot right now.

Is my first YSL cosmetic experience just as hot? Check the review….

YSL’s ‘Volume Effet Faux Cils’
Luxurious mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 ($28 from Nordstrom)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Luxurious mascara for a false lash effect. An intense look in a single stroke. The secret? A triple-film complex—a coating film for intensity, conditioning film for curve and fixing film for long-lasting effectiveness.” (source)

The truth:
I feel all luxurious and whatnot. I mean, wow…YSL mascara. Ohhh, dawliiing!

What I loved about it: That golden tube makes me feel like I’m holding a piece of…gold. I love it! And I love how this mascara comes in SIX colors. That’s dope, son!!

What I didn’t like: Blue, where you went? You went on beautifully but within minutes you disappeared. Dude, WTFrack…

Overall: So a few of y’all requested this mascara. I probably would not have reviewed it otherwise. But being that I’ve never tried a YSL mascara, I decided to give it a whirl.

I’m kinda glad I did because it’s a pretty cool mascara! First of all….10 points for YSL for having a burgundy and gray mascara. How cool is that? I’ll have to play around with those soon. It took me forever to figure out what color I was going to get. I wanted to be safe and stick with black but lately many of y’all have been asking me about colored mascaras, so I picked up #6 Deep Night and took it home.

Well….look how blue it is!

So pretty! The wand is decent. Not good, not bad but not ah-mazing, ya know? I really like colored mascaras but I get kind of annoyed when they don’t show up so well on dark brown/black lashes. I would love to see how this looks on blond lashes! Or even red…wow!

But I digress…to really see if I could get blue blue lashes, I rolled the mascara on top of my lashes. Like this…

This was after I applied on coat the “regular way”. It came out like this…

Boo. Clumpy and just..confused. LOL! This is without flash but they aren’t even that blue in person. *sigh*

So I applied it again the “regular way”.

(photo from lash week)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Well, hot darn! That’s some pretty good volume and length. Not bad at all. And the lashes look all curly too. They almost look like falsies.

But wait. Here’s a far-away-shot. I’ve got the mascara on the left eye only. Does it look as good? And can you see the blue?

I guess it’s okay. But darn it! I want more blue! I’m still satisfied. It is a really good mascara.

Would I recommend it?: Yep! If you have close to $30 to spend on a mascara (which I don’t…see how much I love, y’all? LOL!), this isn’t a bad one to try.

Has anyone tried this one yet? I’m really itching to try the gray. Hmmm….

Mascara Monday: Victoria Secret’s Beauty Rush mascara

Well, look at that! Who would have thought that I would be reviewing a mascara from Vicky S? Totally unexpcted, right? The next time you’re strolling your local VS, check out their beauty section. It’s not so bad! I received a gift set for Christmas one year and was quite surprised!

Let’s see how this mascara holds up…

Victoria Secret’s
Beauty Rush mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (2 for $12 or 5 for $20)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: FA lush stroke of lash-enhancing color. Pigment-rich formula defines lashes in wearable color for look-at-me eyes. (source)

The truth:
They are just okay. It’s really the packaging that has me doing cartwheels. How cute is that?

What I loved about it: The purple is REALLY purple. Loves that!!

What I didn’t like: The black mascara fell way too flat. And neither provided much volume.

Overall: This wasn’t a highly requested mascara or anything but I thought they would be pretty cool to add to the Mascara Bin. Yana from My Own Judge snagged the black (Blacktastic) one for me and of course after seeing the purple (Violight), I had to run out and get that one.

Let’s take a look at the wands:

Pretty average, uh? Not BAD but they look a little cheap-y. I don’t have many problems with wands like this but they are soooo….2001, ya know? And they aren’t the best with separation. They kind of suck at it, actually.

Sooo….I don’t know. I had different experiences with both mascaras. Violight turned out to be pretty decent. I didn’t get much volume but I was pretty satisfied with the lengthening aspect. It wasn’t AMAZING. But it was good. That the purple really is purple on black lashes. Now that surprised me!

Blacktastic, on the other hand, was just….phooey. It was total disappointment. It weighed down my lashes and didn’t provide any kind of volume. Interesting considering these babies come from the same color. Why is Violight SO much better?

Interesting…..

Both were a tad bit smudge-y but I didn’t experience any flaking throughout the day But I will tell you one thing about these mascaras–they are build-able! I applied a good 4 coats one application and it refused to clump. But applying coat after coat didn’t do much…I was still volume-less. Boo! On to the photos!

Would I recommend it?: I suppose they are okay ladies who aren’t looking for much when it comes to mascara application. It is perfect for my 16-year old cousin who just wants a little POP.

Anyone try any of these mascaras? What do you think?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Fresh Supernova mascara

Okay, y’all should be proud of me because I am FINALLY getting around to reviewing this mascara. I have been working my hardest to crank out mascaras that have been highly requested. Fresh Supernova is one of them.

So yaaay! I am happy to finally add it to the Mascara Bin. Check the review below!

Fresh Supernova mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 (around $25.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: Find out more about it here.

The truth:
Wellll…..I mean, it’s not THAT super.

What I loved about it: It is totally build-able. You can apply two coats or twenty coats and you won’t endure any clumping. At all. Now that’s pretty cool.

What I didn’t like: It didn’t give me much….well, anything. And it also seemed to flake throughout the day. No bueno.

Overall: Okay, soooo…..I had HIGH expectations for Fresh Supernova. With all of the requests I received about this baby I just KNEW it would be the best thing since the Blackberry. Buuuut, not so much.

And it’s not that Supernova is a BAD mascara….I just find that it doesn’t do much for me.

First, let’s take a look at the wand..

It’s not bad. It allows for easy breezing through the lashes. So whether you have short, stubby, long or full lashes—the wand will work well for you. So 2 points for that.

Now as far as the actual performance of the mascara—it’s good. I think it may work better for ladies with shorter lashes. It gave me decent length but not much volume. As mentioned, one of the best aspects of this mascara is how awesome it is when it comes to building.

I talk about this a lot in the video review but I think it’s amaziiiing how it doesn’t clump. You can go for as many coats as you want and Supernova just won’t get all clump-tastic on you. This aspect makes it a very diverse mascara. That means you can apply 2 coats and head to work one day. And apply 4 coats and head to a bar the next day. It gives you options which is really cool because a lot of mascaras tend to clump after multiple coats.

However, what it did do was flake a bit. I soooo don’t like flaky mascaras. I don’t handle eye irritation well. I’m so serious. I get all dramatic and am always close to clawing my eyes out so a mascara that flakes, even a bit, is so not for me.

It is also free of synthetic dyes and sulfates so 10 points to Fresh for giving us a pretty green mascara.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

So the length is there but nothing spectacular. Eh. Eh. Ehhh….

Would I recommend it?: Ummmm, not really. I think there are better ones out there for a better price with better pay-off. It’s not bad bad but it’s not the bomb diggity (so old skool…ha!) either and for $25, I expected uh-maze-ing!!

A Supernova fan?

Think I’m loca for not liking?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Benefit BadGal Lash mascara

It’s been a long time coming but I’m back with a mascara review! I know, I know…don’t hate me. Blogger duties have called and I’ve been traveling for the past three weekends. And I’ll be traveling again this weekend so hang in there with me, fam!

Here’s a mascara review that has been highly requested for almost a year now. And I am JUST now getting around to it. Is it bad as in good or bad as in bad?

Check the review!

Benefit Bad Gal mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 (around $19.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “The BADgal line of mascaras from Benefit are full of “BAD-itude!” The rich, sexy formula and oversized brush build thick, beautiful and bodacious lashes.”

The truth:
That wand is a little too massive for my liking.

What I loved about it: Umm, I don’t think there was anything that I REALLY loved about it.

What I didn’t like: The wand. Seriously too big.

Overall: I think the world loves this mascara. I say this because I have gotten so many requests to review it. But then a lot of you have been skeptical. So leave it to your head Mascara Reviewer to bring you the nitty gritty.

Well, I don’t have THAT much to say about this baby here. It’s just okay. While I’ve heard a lot of people say that looooove it, I find it to be pretty average as far as mascaras go. The wand is HUGE!

And no me gusta. I find that wands this large make for difficult control. And for my ladies with shorter lashes and lids…this ain’t the one for y’all. The bristles are a little tight together and don’t make for much room to flow through the lashes.

As far as the mascara’s overall performance. It’s okay. But it’s not spectacular. I find that it does what it needs to do but does not go beyond the average mascara. Like ALL of my reviews, this is completely relative but I don’t….BadGal just didn’t surprise me. Plus I think it is far too expensive for it to not have any cool tricks.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Not bad…but I’ve seen better.

Would I recommend it?: Not so much. I know of other mascaras that do more for half the price.

A fan of this baby? Does it work wonders for you?

Mascara Monday: Mascara Talk

Yeah, I know…..you were probably expecting a mascara review but with the largest game of my alma mater football team’s existence, I got a little behind….

Besides, I bet you needed a break from the boring Mascara Monday, uh?

Or maybe that’s just me. HA!

Here’s what I’ve had my eyes on in the mascara world!

A reader sent me an article about these babies and whoa! They look delicious. For $19.50 you can coat your lashes Sapphire, Amber, Amethyst, Garnet or Emerald. Now that’s just too cool. I know colored mascaras aren’t new but am I crazy for wanting to try every single one of those? You can find out more about them here.

  • Waterproof mascaras—do they REALLY differ from regular mascaras? I know that they are intended to last longer–hence them being waterproof but does Maybelline Pulse Perfection work better, worse or just as good as Maybelline Pulse Perfection Waterpoof? Hmm….stay tuned for my findings on that.
  • So Tarte has this 4 day stain mascara that claims to keep your lashes long and lush for a whooping 4 days.

I mean, wow! How is that even possible? You mean to tell me it will hold up if I wash my face? Or pour a bucket of water over my head? I just, I don’t think—please believe I’ll be reviewing this one soon. (photo source)

  • Word on the street (and in my inbox) says that CoverGirl Queen Collection has a mascara. Now where have I been and how did I miss this? I have gotten so many requests to review it but I haven’t seen it anywhere. Man oh man!
  • The next mascara I will be reviewing will be Benefit Bad Gal .
  • Soon after comes Lancome Hypnose drama.
  • How soon is too soon to begin wearing mascara? I didn’t wear it much until I graduated from high school. I get emails from 13-15 year old readers and I’m tempted to tell them to just not even worry about wearing mascara right now.
  • I’ve said it once before but olive and jojoba oil do a fantastic job at removing mascara.

Got any mascara questions, news or ideas on the mind? Tell me yo!

Happy Monday!

Mascara Monday: Smashbox Lash DNA mascara

Well nooow, this is a Clumps of Mascara first! With Lash DNA being the first Smashbox mascara I have reviewed, I gave it high expectations. Did it deliver? Or did it make me MAD?

Get it? DNA…MAD?

*crickets*

Awww, bring on the review!

Smashbox Lash DNA mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (around $19.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Our revolutionary new scientifically-engineered mascara is packed with proteins and amino acids that bind to lashes for genetic defying length and strength. The unique double helix brush grabs each lash, no matter how small, for the ultimate fanned out effect. Dramatic jet black shade intensifies and defines. Defy genetics with Lash DNA Mascara.”

The truth:
This mascara has one of the most amazing wands I have EVER seen. It’s sick, I tell ya!

What I loved about it: The wand is great. Phenomenal. Innovative. Perfect.

The “double helix” wand makes it so that that you can extend your lashes in several ways.

What I didn’t like: I would have liked to achieve a little more volume. But after a good 3 coats of mascara, it didn’t seem to give me that without clumping me up a bit.

Overall: Soooo, I don’t know why it has taken so long but yay to me for finally reviewing a Smashbox mascara. Lash DNA broke me in and I now have high standards for all of the other Smashbox mascaras I review. I can’t stress this enough—the wand is incredible. It really assists in extending the lashes. I love that you are able to maneuver it in many different directions.

See!

The packaging shows you three steps in which you can use the wand. It is difficult to photograph but the wand has a “twist” to it. This makes it easy to achieve all three steps–which I actually do each time I used this mascara. Lash DNA also gave my lashes a little gloss to them which was a nice little surprise.

How I applied it:

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely! The wand is definitely worth a try.

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion mascara

Oh yeah….another mascara review! This baby has been highly anticipated in the mascara world. I have gotten so many emails about L’Oreal Explosion. With a name like “Explosion” you would think this ish is like…amaziiiiiing. Is it though?

Check the review!

L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $9.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims: “…the first mascara at mass with a spherical brush and smooth formula to lengthen and separate every lash. Creamy formula works with the unique patened brush to build quickly, leaving a flexible deposit of color.”

The truth:
It has some of the same issues that Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes had. Buuuut, I like this one better.

What I loved about it: Its affordability. And I love the wand. I can’t deny…whoever came up with this idea of making a mascara wand a little ball is a genius. I find that this design works great for any and everyone. It REALLY gets in those corner lashes.

What I didn’t like: Like Givenchy’s Phenomen ‘Eyes, I was sent to Clumps City around the second coat. Third coat was a nightmare!

Overall: I’m not saying I’m a Know-It-All but I knew this mascara was a comin’. No I didn’t have any insider secrets but it only makes sense. We saw the same thing with Lancome Oscillation. Soon after Maybelline Pulse Perfection hit the scene. Givenchy Phenomen ‘Eyes blew us away and now we’ve got L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion. If you are one of those ladies that don’t want to shell out close to $30 on a specialty mascara, wait a few months. No doubt a drugstore brand will come out with a similar mascara.

If you have already tried Phenomen ‘Eyes, you can’t help but compare L’Oreal’s Explosion to it. It’s pretty automatic considering they both have what I like to call the dagger-like wand.

Not sure if I’ve said it enough so I’ll say it again, THE WAND IS AWESOME!! It is perfect perfect perfecttttt for ladies of all lash-types. Especially for those who struggle with separation issues. This, in my opinion, is the BEST brush for ladies with those issues.

Is it great for lengthening? Yes.
What about volumizing? It’s just “eh”. Not bad but not spectacular either.

Now let’s talk about a few of the mascara’s downfalls….like Phenomen ‘Eyes, L’Oreal Explosion clumps pretty badly. I really don’t understand why. Is is the formula? Or maybe it’s the way that wand is shaped….I really haven’t figured it out but it’s frustrating to say the least. The wand does such a dynamic job at separating that you really want to go for 2-3 coats. But the attempt will have you lookin’ in the mirror and uttering “WTF”. So sad, I know….

One coat is more than enough! Get those inner corners, separate the lashes and you are good to go. No need to push a second coat. It really will clump you up somethin’ seriously.

NOTE: I also found that this mascara works best with something like a mascara shield. I don’t know if it’s just me and my clumsiness but I ended up with a lot of the mascara being on the skin behind my lashes. This is crazy frustrating. Especially if you have applied eye make-up. This can be prevented by simply blocking that skin–use a mascara shield or even an index card.

Now let’s see the mascara in action…

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara

One coat isn’t bad…but check out the disaster that is two coats:

Yikes! See what I mean about only needing one coat?

More shots of L’O Explo in action….

Would I recommend it?: I do. Every mascara lovin’ gal needs to give it a whirl. I think everyone will be impressed with the separation on this baby. And who knows? You can probably do one coat for separation and then follow up with your favorite mascara for optimum results. Heyyy!!!

Video Review!

So whatcha think? Are you ready for it? It won’t be available until November 2009 (don’t be askin’ me how I got it…y’all know I’m cool with the Mascara Fairy. *wink*) but are you anxious for it now?
