Mascara Monday: Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

Happy Monday, family! I hope that you all had spectacular weekends! I would like to thank you all again for your support of Amor de Lacquer week. I thought it was a huge success? What do you think? I’d love to get your feeedback on the poll on the main page of the blog.

And for those of yall that were irritated with the non-stop talk of all things nails….your time is coming up! Want to see a week worth of mascara talk? All things blushes? Hair? Lips? Or eyes? Let me know at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

OH….and I tell you that there is an official archive for ALL of the mascaras that I have reviewed? The MASCARA BIN tab is also on the main page of Clumps. All mascara reviews will end up there and per the request of readers, I have organized it by rating.

Where will Rimmel Sexy Curves end up? Hmmmm…..

Rimmel Sexy Curves mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7 from Wal-greens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Lashes look up to 70% curlier with voluptous volume(per packaging)

The truth:
Volume? Not so much. Curl? Okay…..not too bad.

What I loved about it:
Despite it looking a little strange, I actually really like the brush.

What I didn’t like:
Grrr, it didn’t give me the dramatic level of volume I was looking for. I know that most curling mascaras don’t provide a good amount of volume but this one said that it would so….*pouts*…I’m sad.

Overall: If I could give an award to the “Most Passed By Mascara”, I would give it to Rimmel’s Sexy Curves. I have been eye-ing this mascara for months! But for some reason….I never bit the bullet and gave it a try. Until now.

First, let’s talk about the wand.

Rimmel calls this their “triple plump brush” and that it “curves in for volume and curves out for maximum curl.” Um. Okay. I’m not sure what that means and they don’t exactly provide directions for it so I used this wand the same way I would use any other.

Well…I like it! It makes for decent application with minimal strain. I don’t really understand WHY it is made that way but it doesn’t give me any problems, so a sista ain’t complainin’!

In terms of the mascara’s performance….it’ s good! It gave me A LOT of curl. I found that by bringing the lashes up from root to tip and holding it for a few seconds, I got a better hold. Sometimes I feel like curling mascaras should have some kind of spritz in them–just so that they can hold that curl. Not sure how eye-safe that would be but it’s a thought, hmmmm?

So yes, Sexy Curves gave me that curl. It didn’t hold up as much as I would have liked it but such is the case with most curling mascaras. To get the maximum amount of curl I would suggest curling your lashes with an eyelash curler prior to application.

(DID curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Sure. But only if you are okay with curling your lashes first. However, if you have bone straight lashes and eyelash curlers don’t work too well for you, this mascara may not work.

Have you tried this mascara yet? What do you think?

I have also reviewed Rimmel’s Glam Eyes mascara.

Enjoy your Monday, family!

Mascara Monday: Lash Control-Volume

Happy happy Monday, family! Mascara Monday took a little break last week but we are up and running again and excited to bring you another mascara review.

Here is a brand that focuses strictly on mascara. I was able to meet with Jennifer from Lash Control at The Makeup Show LA and I had a wonderful time chit-chatting with her about all things mascaras. Of course I had to try one of the mascaras from Lash Control. I chose the lady in purple who represents volume.

Soooo….did it work?

Lash Control-Volume

Price: 2 out of 5 ($20 a little steep for the average mascara)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “The mascara comes with a fitted, snap-down vinyl “baggie” for added protection inside your make-up bag. The extra inch of distance provided by the flexible wiper offers another barrier to air and foreign particle contact with the formula which make the mascara perform better and for a longer period of time.(source)

The truth: Wow! The squeezable tube is pretty cool. No more globs of mascara coming out of the tube.

What I loved about it:
I love the wand. It makes mascara application easy and effortless.

I also liked how weightless two coats of mascara felt on my lashes.

What I didn’t like:
I wish I would have achieved a little more volume.

Overall: Lash Control is a mascara brand that has mascaras specifically for certain needs. Need a waterproof mascara? They have it. Desire curl? They got you covered? Seeking length? Look no futher. I am glad to see a mascara company that tries to cover all of the issues that we have with mascara application and performance. The “flexible wiper sleeve” is incredibly useful.

In the past, I have gotten so irritated with mascara wands that pull out TOO much mascara. You end up having to wipe it along the edges of the mascara tube or wipe it on a tissue. Both actions are unsanitary so in a sense this mascara is helping you keep the germs at bay as well as allowing your mascara to last a little longer.

The idea is ingenious and it works flawlessly.

As far as the mascara, I wished that I got a little more volume. Just a tad bit more. But I won’t complain too much because what I got after only two coats is absolutely beautiful!

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely. It is innovative and it works!

What do you think? Would you like to try this mascara? How cool is the squeezy-middle? I love it! You can get this mascara and more at the Lash Control website.

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stylist Washable mascara

Happy Monday!!

Did everyone have great weekends? I had a ball hosting a “Beauty 101″ class with a group of 16-year old young ladies. I even put together a little booklet that I will share with the Clumps of Mascara family later on this week. And the weather in Tallahassee, Florida was absolutely divine! The nomad in me is itching to make another big move but I have to admit….it’s going to be difficult to move to city that isn’t as warm as Florida is this time of the year.

Boy, I sure have been on a Maybelline mascara tip for a while, uh? I can’t help it! These older mascaras may be diamonds in the rough and I may not know about it. Is the Stylist one of them? Or just a big bust?

Check out the review…..

Maybelline Lash Stylist
Washable mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $6. I got it as a BOGO buy from Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “Exclusive V-Styling mascara comb sculpts and thickens lashes up to 65%. (source)

The truth:
Aww look! It’s got a baby comb. How cute! In all real seriousness….this is a pretty good mascara. Maybelline is truly one of the best in the mascara making department, IMO.

What I loved about it:
Obviously the wand is pretty cool lookin’. And not only that it is pretty effective in getting ALL of your lashes out there.

I find that it is easier to use than the traditional mascara wand. It coats each and EVERY lash with ease.

What I didn’t like:
This may be the klutz in me, but I ended up getting a TON of mascara on my lower lash line when trying to apply this mascara. I mean, it’s insane…of course I have learned how to manipulate the brush a little better but my first few applications were a hot mess. LOL, literally.

Overall: To be honest…I kinda wanted to hate this mascara. LOL, seriously. I feel like a broken record when it comes to singing praises to Maybelline’s mascaras. But it’s not just simple adoration for these babies. As the saying goes, “Proof is in the pudding” and I hope that you all see that I’m not exaggerating with the before/after photos and videos. Simply put..this mascara is GREAT! Per its claim, it DID thicken my lashes and gave a crazy amount of length. The volume junkie in me would have liked a little more volume but I think that this is great for every day wear. It is easy to remove, doesn’t irritate or flake and is just a pleasure to work with.

LOL…like it’s a co-worker or somethin’. On to the photos.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

I should probably mention that you really only need one coat of this mascara. Two isn’t at all necessary and I only applied that second coat out of habit.

I like mascaras with the comb! Clinique High Definition Lashes mascara has a wand like this and I found success with that baby too.

Would I recommend it?: Sure do! Especially if you find that your lashes are wild and crazy like me. The comb will set them straight.

Have you ever tried this mascara? A fan? Didn’t find success with it? Do you prefer mascaras with combs? I would love to know your thoughts!

Always,

Beauty Bee-haviors: How many mascaras do you have?

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.
How many mascaras do you have?

Do you stick with one or are you constantly buying more?
Yall know that I am a mascara reviewer but I only have about 4 mascaras. Seriously! That’s it!
What do I do with the ones I review?

No, I don’t save my receipt and return them all. That could have probably worked once or twice but I have reviewed over 40 mascaras so how would that look? HA! I usually trash them. Some are given to me but most of them I purchase. In the future I think I will use disposable wands as I test mascaras. That way if I don’t like them I can give them to friends and family.

But enough about me. What about you?

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Sky High Curves mascara

Rise and shine, cupcakes! It is another Monday. *insert groan audio clip here* How was everyone’s weekends? I went to an event and met up with some of my family members. Which is a big deal because my family has always been so spread out. Even my immediate family. My youngest sister and I just happened to both be wearing green. Ain’t that somethin’?

She’s a mess like her big sister. I also enjoyed the 80 degree weather here in Orlando, Florida. 5 degrees warmer and I will literally be running to the beach!

And I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. Probably the best movie I have seen all year. I’ve had the soundtrack for awhile so it’s good to put a sound with….the movie.

Now for the mascara review….did this mascara really give me sky high curves? Or is just an exaggerated claim?

Maybelline Sky High Curves mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $6. I got it as a BOGO buy from Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: “Captures each lash. Lengthens to the extreme. Sets daring curves beyond your natural lash. No clumps, no globs.(per packaging)

The truth:
I love it. Definitely an amazing mascara that gives me super long lashes!

What I loved about it:
The length…it’s pretty impeccable, yall!

What I didn’t like:
It was a little clump-a-licious but nothing that I couldn’t handle.

Overall: Often times we are so used to only looking at mascaras that are “new”. You know….the ones with commercials and pop up in magazines. But what about the veterans mascaras. The ones that came out a year or two ago. I decided to give Maybelline’s Sky High Curves mascara a whirl and lemme tell yall….I’m glad I did. This mascara is GREAT! I think it is absolutely phenomenal. I purchased this tube about 2 weeks ago and I am STILL wearing it religiously. Normally I am volume-seeker. I love thick lush lashes over length. But I managed to fall in love with a mascara that wasn’t so volume-enriched.

The wand is pretty decent. It almost looks like Maybelline Lash Stiletto. Almost.

If you seek length and curl…this mascara is IT! Yes, I said it. It even provides a bit of curl. Amazing to say the least.

I did notice that by the third coat it was a little clumpy-wumpy but that’s to be expected. And it wasn’t “insanely clumpy”. More like “Oh wow, your lashes look amazing and I’m looking past those clumps because….your lashes look so amazing.” Kinda like that.

And is it just me or do my lashes really look like they are reaching for the sky? LOL, I bet about 3 of yall laughed at that one.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

LOL @ that eyelash that just won’t curl. It is seriously standing straight up. I kinda like it though. It’s funny lookin’ but it doesn’t bother me.

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely. It really is a great mascara. It’s affordable and can be found anywhere.

A loyal fan of this mascara? Never heard of it? Want it? Need it? Could care less. Tell me!!

Enjoy your Monday, family!

Mascara Monday: blinc Kiss Me mascara

Greetings family! I hope that you all had wonderful weekends. I know the big talk was the Oscars but I didn’t even watch it. I’ve never been big on watching award shows. Can you believe that? But did any one catch it and want to update me on who had the best dress or make-up? Whatcha think?

Anywhoovers this mascara was requested a while back. I’ve heard many raves about it. But does it live up to those claims and raves? Let’s see…

Blinc Kiss Me mascara

Price: 4 out of 5 (I got it for $24 from Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5
Bold
What it claims:Blinc Kiss Me Mascara is the original tube-technology mascara. It’s invented to form tiny water-resistant “tubes” around your lashes for maximum amplification and hold, rather than painting them like conventional mascaras. Once applied, the tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump, or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes.” (source)

The truth:
I expected it to do a little more.

What I loved about it:
The wand is perfect for those with smaller eyes and lashes.

What I didn’t like:
I needed a little more “Umph“. I mean it wasn’t bad but after applying it, I looked and the mirror and thought, “That’s it?”

Overall: I took on a different perspective about this mascara when I was sharing my thoughts about it with the lady who worked in Sephora. Our conversation went something like this:

ME: “What do you think of Blinc’s Kiss Me mascara. I have been reviewing it for a while and it just doesn’t seem to impress me. What are your thoughts?”

Sephora Lady: “Kiss Me definitely isn’t one of the most dramatic mascaras out there but it works beautifully on Asian ladies and other women with smaller eyes.”

ME:Ohhh okay. That makes sense. I found that I had to keep applying and applying to even get a ‘decent’ amount of volume and length.”

Sephora Lady: “Right…it probably isn ‘t for you if you desire a LOT of volume and length. What’s great about it is that it is a rich black mascara. It looks very natural but gives a certain pop to your eyes too.”

I pretty much learned a lot more from this mascara and had a greater appreciation for it by talking with the Sephora Lady than from my own experiences using it. This mascara brought me back to one important lesson in mascara reviewing: Everyone is looking for something different. While I am desirous of long and full lashes, some ladies just want a little ‘somethin-somethin‘.

In which case, Kiss Me would work. Oh! I almost forgot to mention….this is a fiber mascara, so you know what that means right? To take it off, all you have to do is wet your fingers with warm water and then gently remove it. Easy! This is probably one of my favorite perks of fiber mascaras. Well, Blinc doesn’t call them “fibers”….they refer to them as “tubes”….hence their motto “Tube your lashes”.

It looks like this!

Pretty groovy (or scary), uh?

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I would. I don’t think it’s for me but I know that it would work beautifully on other women out there….especially those with smaller lashes.

Have you tried this mascara? A fan? Or not so much?

Have a wonderful Monday!

Mascara Monday: Physicians Formula Organic wear mascara

It’s the beginning of a new week and I hope that you all are off to a GREAT one. I had an amazing Valentine’s Day. I was able to spend most of it with my girls from college. I haven’t seen most of these ladies since I’ve moved back to Florida so it was a great little reunion for all of us. The greater part of Valentine’s Day was spent with someone special so all in all it was a good day!

But is THIS is a good mascara? Hmm….so many products have gone 100% natural and “eco-friendly” and while I am not opposed to products like this, I do rate them the same way I would rate a traditional mascara. That means I expect the same performance based on their claims. Did this one impress me? Or will I be throwing it in the recycling bin?

Physicians Formula Organic
wear mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got it for $10 at CVS)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What it claims: “Revolutionary 100% Natural Origin formula contains the purest ingredients and provides 5x Lash Boosting for lash length, volume & definition naturally.” (source)

The truth: The idea is great….I’m all for “going green”–even with cosmetics. However, I couldn’t get past the smell and the formulation just doesn’t dry.

What I loved about it: The packaging is tres cute. I love love love it. I also like how the mascara is 100% all natural. For someone who who is big on eating all-natural and wearing her naturally, I could definitely have some all-natural additions to my make-up collection. I was hoping that this product could be that introduction.

What I didn’t like: It just isn’t comparable to a regular mascara. And the smell is horrific! I mean….awful.

Overall: Let’s rap a little bit about the wand.

It’s not bad. It’s not exceptionally good either. I would REALLY like it it the the bristles were a little longer and the wand were more steady. It is a too flimsy and of course that affects the control you will get when applying it to your lashes.

Let’s do a rundown of what is in this mascara:

-100% free of synthetic solvents
-Organic Orange water
-Orangic Aloe and Cucumber extracts
-100% natural orgin biopolymers
-1oo% natural orgin preservatives
-100% natural orgin rice protein & organic tapioca starch organic beeswax
-100% free of petroleum by products, parabens, GMO and synthetic fragrances

Right off, I’m impressed. Traditional mascaras contain a great deal of synthetic preservatives and solvents. These ingredients put you at risk for eye irritations. So it is definitely comforting using a mascara like this.

But that’s where the comfort ends. Unfortunately, while it gives me a decent amount of volume and length it just doesn’t last. I find that the Floridian humidity makes the mascara literally slide off of my lashes. Traditional mascaras usually leave your lashes relatively hard. This mascara does not do that. Because of that I endured a lot of smearing and found that within a few hours, the mascara was just gone. I also couldn’t get over the smell. It just didn’t go away! It was a very distinct plant-y smell that just didn’t sit well with me.

I really wanted to rate this mascara a little higher but the performance just wasn’t there.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I think it’s worth a try. Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it can’t work for someone else. I think my climate has a lot to do with it. Plus it’s all natural so it really is worth a try….even though it smells like potting soil.

Didn’t do a video review this time around.
Should I? Let me know in the comments.

Would you be open to trying a mascara like this? Should all mascaras go “all natural”? What do you think?

Have a wonderful Monday!

Mascara Monday: Dior Diorshow Iconic Mascara

Okay, is it just me or does it seem like Christmas was just a week or so ago? Why is it already almost mid-February?! That is crazy to me. Before you know it, it will be summer time and yours truly will be flying away to my favorite spots in Hawaii. Or if I can’t afford it, I’ll settle for Daytona or Clearwater beaches here in Florida.

Speaking of “not being able to afford it”….that’s really how I feel about this mascara. I don’t know what it is about me, but I’ve gotten extremely cheap with my make-up purchasing. If I’m going to spend almost $30, I better get more than a measly mascara. And the mascara better be AWESOME!

How did DiorShow Iconic stand up for me? A waste of money or a wonderful investment?

Dior Diorshow
Iconic Mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($27 is a bit steep, fam. I’m just sayin’…. )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What it claims: “A mascara with an innovative oblique brush that curls and defines lashes.” (source)

The truth: I’m just thrilled that it’s not anything like the original Diorshow.

What I loved about it: Wow….I mean, my lashes really looked….almost false! And the wand is pretty groovy. Dior gets 10 points from me for the innovative wand design.

What I didn’t like: This mascara had me residing in Clump City, USA.

Overall: I have been asked to review this mascara ever since it came out. And while I love makin’ yall happy, I just couldn’t allow myself to spend so much on a mascara. Sure, I’ve done it before but times have certainly changed econonmically—as if yall didn’t know.

I felt a little better spending $27 on this baby since it came with a little goody.

As a Sephora Exclusive, the Diorshow Iconic mascara comes in a cute little bag with a mini Addict High shine lipstick. Makes purchasing it not soooo bad.

One of my biggest frustrations with the original Diorshow was the crazy amount of clumps it gave me. I didn’t see why the mascara was so popular when all it gave me was a hot mess of clumps after the 2nd coat.

But Iconic is different; because the wand is different. Which helps with the clump factor a bit, but not tremendously. I think I’m okay with getting away with two coats of mascara with this baby here. And because it’s a “high drama mascara”, I definitely wouldn’t not wear it to work every day.

But does it do its job? I would say so! I managed to get a good amount of curl and length. And of course, volume. I wish Dior would do something with that “gooby-ness” that is their formula, though. It’s just so thick.

But it is still a good mascara and a lot better than the original.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Would I recommend it?: Only if you can afford it. If not, I highly recommend L’Oreal Volumnious or Max Factor Volume Couture for great black volumized lashes.

What do you think? Have you ever tried this mascara or the original Diorshow? Think it’s overpriced or is it worth it?

Here is my review of the original Diorshow mascara.
