Mascara Monday: Physicians Formula Organic wear mascara

It’s the beginning of a new week and I hope that you all are off to a GREAT one. I had an amazing Valentine’s Day. I was able to spend most of it with my girls from college. I haven’t seen most of these ladies since I’ve moved back to Florida so it was a great little reunion for all of us. The greater part of Valentine’s Day was spent with someone special so all in all it was a good day!

But is THIS is a good mascara? Hmm….so many products have gone 100% natural and “eco-friendly” and while I am not opposed to products like this, I do rate them the same way I would rate a traditional mascara. That means I expect the same performance based on their claims. Did this one impress me? Or will I be throwing it in the recycling bin?

Physicians Formula Organic
wear mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got it for $10 at CVS)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 2 out of 5

What it claims: “Revolutionary 100% Natural Origin formula contains the purest ingredients and provides 5x Lash Boosting for lash length, volume & definition naturally.” (source)

The truth: The idea is great….I’m all for “going green”–even with cosmetics. However, I couldn’t get past the smell and the formulation just doesn’t dry.

What I loved about it: The packaging is tres cute. I love love love it. I also like how the mascara is 100% all natural. For someone who who is big on eating all-natural and wearing her naturally, I could definitely have some all-natural additions to my make-up collection. I was hoping that this product could be that introduction.

What I didn’t like: It just isn’t comparable to a regular mascara. And the smell is horrific! I mean….awful.

Overall: Let’s rap a little bit about the wand.

It’s not bad. It’s not exceptionally good either. I would REALLY like it it the the bristles were a little longer and the wand were more steady. It is a too flimsy and of course that affects the control you will get when applying it to your lashes.

Let’s do a rundown of what is in this mascara:

-100% free of synthetic solvents
-Organic Orange water
-Orangic Aloe and Cucumber extracts
-100% natural orgin biopolymers
-1oo% natural orgin preservatives
-100% natural orgin rice protein & organic tapioca starch organic beeswax
-100% free of petroleum by products, parabens, GMO and synthetic fragrances

Right off, I’m impressed. Traditional mascaras contain a great deal of synthetic preservatives and solvents. These ingredients put you at risk for eye irritations. So it is definitely comforting using a mascara like this.

But that’s where the comfort ends. Unfortunately, while it gives me a decent amount of volume and length it just doesn’t last. I find that the Floridian humidity makes the mascara literally slide off of my lashes. Traditional mascaras usually leave your lashes relatively hard. This mascara does not do that. Because of that I endured a lot of smearing and found that within a few hours, the mascara was just gone. I also couldn’t get over the smell. It just didn’t go away! It was a very distinct plant-y smell that just didn’t sit well with me.

I really wanted to rate this mascara a little higher but the performance just wasn’t there.

Would I recommend it?: I think it’s worth a try. Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it can’t work for someone else. I think my climate has a lot to do with it. Plus it’s all natural so it really is worth a try….even though it smells like potting soil.

Didn’t do a video review this time around.
Should I? Let me know in the comments.

Would you be open to trying a mascara like this? Should all mascaras go “all natural”? What do you think?

Have a wonderful Monday!

Mascara Monday: Dior Diorshow Iconic Mascara

Okay, is it just me or does it seem like Christmas was just a week or so ago? Why is it already almost mid-February?! That is crazy to me. Before you know it, it will be summer time and yours truly will be flying away to my favorite spots in Hawaii. Or if I can’t afford it, I’ll settle for Daytona or Clearwater beaches here in Florida.

Speaking of “not being able to afford it”….that’s really how I feel about this mascara. I don’t know what it is about me, but I’ve gotten extremely cheap with my make-up purchasing. If I’m going to spend almost $30, I better get more than a measly mascara. And the mascara better be AWESOME!

How did DiorShow Iconic stand up for me? A waste of money or a wonderful investment?

Dior Diorshow
Iconic Mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($27 is a bit steep, fam. I’m just sayin’…. )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What it claims: “A mascara with an innovative oblique brush that curls and defines lashes.” (source)

The truth: I’m just thrilled that it’s not anything like the original Diorshow.

What I loved about it: Wow….I mean, my lashes really looked….almost false! And the wand is pretty groovy. Dior gets 10 points from me for the innovative wand design.

What I didn’t like: This mascara had me residing in Clump City, USA.

Overall: I have been asked to review this mascara ever since it came out. And while I love makin’ yall happy, I just couldn’t allow myself to spend so much on a mascara. Sure, I’ve done it before but times have certainly changed econonmically—as if yall didn’t know.

I felt a little better spending $27 on this baby since it came with a little goody.

As a Sephora Exclusive, the Diorshow Iconic mascara comes in a cute little bag with a mini Addict High shine lipstick. Makes purchasing it not soooo bad.

One of my biggest frustrations with the original Diorshow was the crazy amount of clumps it gave me. I didn’t see why the mascara was so popular when all it gave me was a hot mess of clumps after the 2nd coat.

But Iconic is different; because the wand is different. Which helps with the clump factor a bit, but not tremendously. I think I’m okay with getting away with two coats of mascara with this baby here. And because it’s a “high drama mascara”, I definitely wouldn’t not wear it to work every day.

But does it do its job? I would say so! I managed to get a good amount of curl and length. And of course, volume. I wish Dior would do something with that “gooby-ness” that is their formula, though. It’s just so thick.

But it is still a good mascara and a lot better than the original.

Would I recommend it?: Only if you can afford it. If not, I highly recommend L’Oreal Volumnious or Max Factor Volume Couture for great black volumized lashes.

What do you think? Have you ever tried this mascara or the original Diorshow? Think it’s overpriced or is it worth it?

Here is my review of the original Diorshow mascara.

Mascara Monday: Max Factor 2000 Calorie EXTREME Lash Plumper

Happy Monday! Yes….this dreaded day is back. I don’t think that I will ever get over “dreading” Monday. I mean….does it ever get better? Gracias a Dios for Mascara Monday. It brings a much needed joy in my life and I hope to your life too.

I know—it ain’t that serious but then again it is! HA!!

So we all know how much I adore Max Factor Volume Couture. Forgot one of the best….this mascara just may be THE best in terms of volume. I love it. I have since reviewed Max Factor 2000 Calorie and uh….let’s just say it wasn’t anywhere near as awesome as that MF Volume Couture.

So how does the EXTREME take? Is it better? Just as good? A disappointment? Hmmm….

Max Factor 2000 Calorie
Extreme Lash Plumper

Price: 3 out of 5 (I got this for around $6 from Ulta)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “Introducing our new pro tool for the most voluptuous lashes ever. It’s not a mascara, it’s a lash plumper! Our patented fat-wrap formula and extreme brush uniquely wrap and plump every single lash, from root to tip.” (source)

The truth: Wait…is this a wanna-be Cover Girl Lash Blast in black? Hmmm….

What I loved about it: I suppose that the volume isn’t so bad after a good three coats.

What I didn’t like: It just isn’t….the best. I mean, it’s okay. It’s good ‘n terrible.

Also…..what a hot gooby mess. I mean, look at this:

You get an F for that, Max Factor. And perhaps I got a “bad bottle” but my goodness….

Overall: I’m not even gonna lie to, yall….when I first saw this mascara, I thought “Look at CoverGirl Lash Blast’s wannabe little sister.” LOL! I know..cruel. A true mascara reviewer never compares one mascara to another unless the company itself makes that claim. But can you blame me? Look at this!

The brushes are almost identical. Here’s a closer look at Max Factor’s…

So yes…those not used to this kind of wand will have that inital strugge. I’ve learned to manipulate them pretty well, so this was not a downfall for me. I found that it took a good 3 coats to achieve pretty decent lashes. That annoyed me—I don’t like to apply more than 2 coats if I can help it.

The lengthening factor wasn’t so bad. And now that I look at the photos again, the volume isn’t that bad either. But it isn’t amazing. And it certainly doesn’t stand up against Lash Blast.

….or wait–am I comparing them again? My bad, yall. I can’t help it!

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Nope. It is a definite pass. It’s not bad but I am sure your favorite mascara now is better.

….seriously. I’m just keepin’ it real.

Could it be that Volume Couture is the ONLY decent Max Factor mascara? I’m starting to think so? What say you, folx?

Enjoy your Monday!!

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Blast

Happy Monday, beautiful people. I’m back!!

No more “scheduled posts”. I am soooo happy to be back home and glad that I was able to not only head up to D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration, but I also got to spend some time with some of my favorite beauty bloggin’ babes…also known as The Pretty Committee.

Do you see me in the back being all “extra”. Wow. Ohmigoodness, we had a ball. Thanks Shana for that picture. More about those happenings later. Let’s get to the mascara review. I know, I know. This mascara is quite ancient, ain’t it? I have been getting several requests for me to review it. I must admit….I was a little annoyed with having to re-REVIEW this mascara again but I’m glad I did!

CoverGirl Lash Blast
mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 ($7)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What it claims: “Get a blast of lush, volumized lashes! LashBlast’s patented volume-boosting formula and patent-pending brush are designed to max-out each and every lash, leaving you with the ultimate big lash look.” (source)

The truth: Ummm, wow!! This is good! And I feel like a cosmetic loser for just now showing love to a mascara that’s been out for 288 years.

What I loved about it:
The volume is insane! I mean…it really is there. And it’s there instantly! I almost didn’t need two coats but I’m used to always applying two so I did so out of habit.

What I didn’t like: Like most–the wand. But that’s a given.

It’s good and terrible (name that movie!!). Good because once you get the hang out it…it isn’t so bad. Terrible because..well, look at it!

Overall: This is such an old mascara! I mean…it’s funny that I am just now reviewing it because it has been around for a minute. Actually I did a small review of it in one of my first YouTube videos. Thanks to those who asked me to review it again because I have fallen in love with it! I have been wearing this mascara for quite a while now and am amazed at the volume factor. I found that it also gave me a little length. I didn’t experience any flaking and it held up throughout the day. Again…what a GREAT mascara!

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

It is the TRUTH, ladies! While strolling through CVS a few days ago I noticed that Lash Blast has a sister mascara called Lash Blast Luxe.

However, I will NOT be reviewing this baby here because I refuse to use mascaras with glitter in them. I had a bad experience with that awful CoverGirl Eyelights mascara. Glitter + mascara= eye irritation!! It infuriates me that these companies don’t get this. Goodness gracious….

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely!! Great deal and great mascara if you can get used to the wand.

If you are a crazy mascara consumer like me, I am sure you have tried this one. Tell me what you think!! Would you try the Lash Blast Luxe?

Mascara Monday: Prescriptives Absolute Eyes False Eyelashes

It’s another Monday and you know what that means…..*drum roll*. Another mascara review! I’ve been giving you lovely people the tidbits about the greatness (or lackthereof) of drugstore mascaras but I have been neglecting the higher end brands too. I know yall aren’t complaining because of these tough economic times. I love reviewing mascaras with dramatic claims. Prescriptives Absolute Eyes False Eyelashes set is just that. Will my lashes look “false”. Check the review…

Prescriptives Absolute Eyes
False Eyelashes set

Price: 3 out of 5 (the entire set is $30)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2.5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: ” All you need to make your eyes look amazing, featuring False Eyelashes Plush Mascara.”

The truth: Plush lashes? Yes! False lashes? Not so much.

What I loved about it:
It really did give me plush lashes!

What I didn’t like: The brush wasn’t the easiest to use. Look at this bad boy.

I didn’t know where to start. However, once I got the hang of it, it wasn’t so bad!

Overall: This is my second time reviewing a Prescriptives mascara. The first one was Beyond Long and I didn’t have the best experience with it. Needless to say, I didn’t have high hopes for Absolute Eyes False Eyelashes. Well, I must say—it won me over! I like the idea that the mascara comes in a cute little case with eye make-up remover. Tres cute!

The primer didn’t give me any issues. Add too many coats, however, and you will end up with clumps by the end of your first coat of mascara.

Lashes with NO mascara

(I curled my lashes prior to
mascara application)

You are to use the Lash builder primer first and follow it up with the mascara–obviously.

Lashes with TWO coats

Wow! I say it did a decent job in giving me dark, plus lashes. The length wasn’t so bad either. Due to curling my lashes before application, I ended up a really nice set of lashes. But false? Nahhh….not quite. But good? Yes!

Would I recommend it?: I do! It’s not a bad mascara and if you’re thinking that the price is a little steep, consider what you’re getting with it. $30-mascara, primer, make-up remover and little cute bag. Not too bad.

Due to my travels this week, I won’t be able to provide you lovely people with a video review this time around. Wipe your tears, though. I’ll be back next Monday!

Are you a fan of Prescriptives mascaras? What do you think?

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!!

Staying beautiful and remembering history,

Mascara Monday: Shiseido-The Makeup Mascara Base

Greetings and hot chocolate, friends! Did yall have a wonderful weekend? I was happy to finally spend mine at home. I’ve been traveling since the holidays so it was nice to be stable for a “hot minute“—as my Mommy would say. I’m off to D.C. next weekend but that’s one getaway that I can not wait for.

Ahhh, so let’s see. This mascara review is long over do. I have had this baby here for quite some time. Shiseido mascara base is supposedly a “cult fave” among beauty gurus, editors and novices. Did it pass my tests? Make me smile? Have I found an awesome mascara primer?

Shiseido The Makeup
mascara base

Price: 3 out of 5 ($22 from Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “A clear base coat for eyelashes that improves mascara application and wear as it boosts volume and curl. Adds dramatic definition to the eyes.” (source)

The truth: Definitely decent as far as mascara primers go.

What I loved about it:
I love the fact that it isn’t white like most mascara bases. In fact it has a gel-esque texture that I can appreciate. It didn’t make my lashes feel heavy and “loaded” like primers tend to do.

What I didn’t like: While it did give me a little extra volume, it wasn’t anything to do cartwheels over. I don’t think it is a necessary step in mascara application.

Overall: Okay, so here’s what I REALLY like about this mascara primer..how much easier it makes mascara application. If you find that your lashes really don’t cooperate well with mascara application, this primer can do the trick. I found it easy to apply. My lashes were longer and I think it gave me a little curl. When I applied the first coat of mascara, I found that I didn’t HAVE to do a second or third coat because the primer had already assisted in giving me extra volume. Which I suppose is a good thing.

I could not STAND the brush.

Eww….I mean…why does it look like that? It is a little challenging trying to get that messy brush through your lashes. Another plus for Shiseido mascara base is the wear. It holds up! Or maybe the mascaras I use for it are already up to par in the wear department.

IDK, my BFF Jill. <---random, I know. I actually say this when something confuses me. It’s rather hard to review primers. They are dependent on a lot; how your lashes already look, what you are trying to achieve, the mascara you are using and how much you put on. If you are trying to decide if you need one, I would think of it this way—does your mascara need extra “umph”? If so, maybe a primer would work for you. But then at this price, you are better off purchasing ANOTHER mascara. I don’t know….see, it’s hard!

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara
(NO primer)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara
(primer)

Would I recommend it?: Not really. Not because I didn’t like it but because I’m not sure how necessary it is for regular mascara users. But if you like primers then yes….this is a good one!

Are you a fan of mascara primers? Have any favorites? Don’t see their purpose? Tell me what you think…..

Mascara Monday: Lancome Définicils Pro mascara

Happy Monday, family! I’m back. “B…where did you go?” Thanks to Blogger’s “scheduled posts” thingie…..I bet yall didn’t even know I ghost, uh? I spent New Year’s and my birthday in Atlanta and had a BALL! I will be sure to post random pictures/commentary about my trip. Beauty and B’s life. What could be better? I hope you all could smell the sarcasm in that last statement. HA!! Enough ramblin’…let’s bring on the review, yo!

Lancome Définicils Pro mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($24…can’t even lie. That’s a little steep)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What it claims: “Lashes With Superb Definition. For lavishly long, perfectly defined lashes, this best-selling mascara provides the ultimate in shaping and separation. Patented brush coats each lash, from base to tip, for superb definition.”

The truth: WTF! OMG…this is an amazing mascara!!

What I loved about it:
That is works! The definition is really there!

What I didn’t like: That it’s too expensive. :( LOL…I know that’s not a real reason to dislike a product but look…I’m keepin’ it real, fam. And the clump factor was apparent. Uh oh.

Overall: I can’t believe that I am just now testing and reviewing this jewel here on Clumps of Mascara. Lancome Définicils (along with other mascaras from Lancome) has always been one of those mascaras that I “heard” was good but good but never got around to testing. I finally got the opportunity to test it when it came in my Lancome Beauty Box. Wow oh wow! The definition is there like crazy!! After about 2 coats I got amazingly dark and full lashes. The length was right on too. However, I found that after the 2nd coat I was escorted to Clumps City…a place I don’t like to visit when using mascaras. No worries. I found that 2 coats was enough for me. If you feel as if you need MORE coats, view my video to see a little trick that can steer you away from Clump City. As far as durability goes? It’s there! I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging yet it removed with ease. I should have known. Lancome, how you impress thee!!

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

Would I recommend it?: Sho do…that’s the Southern girl in me but in other words, “YES!” It is quite the splurge but definitely worth it as it gives all over eye definition.

Check out what my Twitter fam has to say about this macsara:

@luxetips Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay!

@minordetail I still have to try it!

@reallifecitygirl thats a definite yay! Love the stuff! Been using it since junior high

@FacePaint101 YAY!! It’s one of my fave mascaras

If that ain’t enough confirmation, I don’t know what is? Have you tried this mascara? Or any of Lancome’s mascaras? Tell me what you think!

Random Trip flick:
