Mascara Monday: Maybelline Volum’ Express MEGA PLUSH mascara

Well, well, welllllll….look who has a new mascara. It’s Maybelline! Are you surprised? I’m not, darling. When it comes to mascaras, you can always depend on Maybelline for hitting us with the latest and sometimes greatest. Looks like we’ve got another sibling of the Volum’ Express crew. I’m wondering how this one can beat The Falsies. But we’ll see, won’t we?

Price: $6.29 on
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What It Claims: “Innovative formula and precision brush design lengthen and separate each lash for high-definition, all-day wear. Wheat protein strengthens and defines without clumping or flaking. Vitamin E conditions and nourishes for soft, flexible lashes. Panthenol prevents your lashes from becoming dry and brittle.” (source)

The Truth: Man. I think I like many of the other Volum’ Express mascaras better.

What I Loved About It: I can see how many will really like the lightweight formula. It’s perfect for those with sensitive eyes.

What I Didn’t Like: The flexible wand just isn’t cutting it, bro.

Overall: If I didn’t have a blog that was based on mascara I would have stopped reviewing Maybelline mascaras a looong time ago. Why? Because The Falsies and Great Lash LOL are two of my favorite mascaras EVER. And I think I’ve had enough mascaras from the Volum’ Express line. Me thinks Maybelline should go ahead and retire that, ya know? BUT at least this mascara comes with something new to the table. According to Maybelline, this is the first ‘gel mousse’ mascara to hit the market. At first I was all, “Nah uuuuh, Maybelline! COVERGIRL NatureLuxe was first!” But after further research, I’ve discovered that COVERGIRL calls NatureLuxe a ‘mousse’ mascara. Not gel mousse. Okay whatever. Tomato tah-mah-to.

I’ll go ahead and say it, I’m not a fan of this formula. And not because it isn’t effective but because it’s almost impossible to get insanely volumized lashes from these mousse-y formulas. And I get it: not everyone needs insanely volumized lashes. But honey, I do. And mascaras that give me less than that make me cry. True story.

The good news is, despite this mascara not being ideal for me and my needs, it works well if you’re a fan of separation and soft lashes.

The wand…

The wand looks a lot like The Falsies except there’s a bend in it that makes it flexible. No me gusta. I prefer my wands to be sturdy and stiff because I find that they give me greater control when applying. Maybelline says the flexible head shock helps with lifting the lashes. Do I agree? Meh. I get its purpose but I’d much prefer a sturdier wand. It’s definitely a preference thing though, ya know?

Despite it not being my favorite, there are several great things about this kind of formula. The consistency looks a lot like most mascara formulas so it’s likely that you won’t notice any difference until you begin applying it to your lashes. For one, the consistency is nice. It isn’t goopy, super thick or watery. It’s nice and makes applying to the lashes easy. I had a hard time noticing much of anything after just 1 coat. It took THREE coats for me to really see a difference in my lashes. That’s the thing about this gel mousse formula; because it isn’t heavy, you may find yourself staring in mirror wondering where the mascara you just applied went. It’s there! It’s just soft and faint. This kind of mascara is a makeup minimalist’s best friend. I also found it to be an ideal mascara for those who have sensitive and watery eyes. Because the formula is so lightweight, I didn’t have to worry about any flaking. Which is a huge plus. I could rub my eyes and not have to worry about any mascara particles droppin’ in ’em.

I typically wear 2 coats of mascara with this one but pushed it to the limit with 3 just to see where I could take it. It thickens up a bit but still not where I’d want it to be.

It’s not a bad mascara. Not in the least.

Bare Lashes

Do I recommend it?: Sure! While it doesn’t fit my needs, if you really like lightweight mascaras whose wands give great separation, you’ll love this mascara.

Okay Maybelline mascara lovers….whatcha think about this one? Yay or nay?

No Longer Walking Dead with Maybelline’s Eye Studio Ink Pen Eyeliner

Mascara? Yeah, whatever. Eyeliner? Can’t leave home without it. I know, I’m pathetic. I never wanted to be one of those gals who couldn’t leave the house without makeup but I look like The Walking Dead without eyeliner. And I’m not even kidding. A little bit of black eyeliner gives my eyes definition and makes me look more awake. But liquid liner?

Liquid liner is the bee’s knees and butterfly’s wings if you know how to use it correctly. Don’t even think about asking me for tips, dude. I am still struggling with applying it. Maybelline is hitting us with a new one and by George, I think I like it!

The tip has a darn good point.

Which is a good thing. A liquid eyeliner with a dull point or a point that collapses too easily can make for ineffective application. And ineffective application will have you looking like a 2nd grader did your makeup. Which is no bueno. This black liner looks really black. Which I love.

It lasts throughout the day without many problems. It did flake on me after I rubbed my eye a bit, but I’m used to that happening with most eyeliners.

-Affordable. Depending on where you go, it’s between $6.99-$7.99.
-It has a nice and intense black color.
-Nice point-y tip that makes it easy to draw both thin and thick strokes.
-Long lasting.

-Can flake if you rub your eyes.
-Dries out if you leave the top off for a few minutes.

Have you seen this eyeliner around? Whatcha think?

Maybelline’s Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadows: For Rockstars Only

I love tattoos, y’all. A lot. I call myself a tattoo rockstar because even though I have 5 tats, I want more. And I could care less about how “unprofessional” people may see them. Tattoos, like makeup, are accessories. It’s self-expression. Granted getting a tattoo is 10x more painful than applying mascara but still….if I didn’t already run out of “un-wrinkable” areas on my skin, I’d be saving my pennies for another tattoo.

But anyway…

My love for tattoos sooooo doesn’t have anything to do with Maybelline’s Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadows. Don’t you love how random I can be? 8)

Have you gals seen these? I only snagged 3 but there are a total of 10 shades. They range from beautiful neutral shades to poppin’ “in yo face” shades. If you’re a fan of eyeshadow primers, you’ll like these. They mimic the oh so popular gel eyeliners that L’Oreal HIP had some time ago. Only these are better.

Much better. What Maybelline says about ’em:

“Dare to get inked with a super long lasting eye shadow. Maybelline New York has combined their intense pigment technology with flexible film formers to create a shadow that packs our most intense, saturated color. The semi-permanent gel-cream smoothes on for vibrant, crease- resistant color that doesn’t fade away– wears for 24 hours.”

Okay…for the record, I don’t recommend wearing anything for 24 hours. I know they weren’t being literal with that claim, but still…wash your face, dolls. I really like the consistency of these. They aren’t super emollient and gel-like but they aren’t hard to work with either. In fact, I don’t even use a brush to apply them. I use my fingers. The three I have do a darn good job at showing up beautifully on my skin.

Tough as Taupe…

I like this one. The color was a little off though. In the pot it looked to be a “lighter” putty but when I dapped my finger in it, it darkened up a bit. Not a total deal breaker as I still think it works nicely as a neutral base. I dug the lighter putty more shade more though.

Painted Purple is actual a little less blue and more purple. My camera is being a butt and not showing you how awesome this shade is in real life.

It’s my favorite of all of the Color Tattoos but mainly because I LOVE rich purple-almost-violet kind of shades.

And then there’s Fierce & Tangy.

Orange is another one of my favorite eyeshadow shades because it’s so unexpected. I wish more brown girls wore orange.

I loved this baby so much that I cranked out a look with it.

Who knew orange eyeshadow could actually be work-appropriate, right?

-Lasts ALL day.
-Priced relatively well at $6.99.
-Comes in myriad of gorgeous colors.
-Easy to find in drugstores in the U.S.

-May be tough to apply as some of the shades are a little tougher to get on your fingers or brush.
-If you have SUPER oily lids, you may still have to wear a primer under these.
-Dries out quickly if you leave top off. Even for a few minutes.
-They don’t always dry with an even finish. When packing on, you have to be sure to do so with precision.

I’m lovin these and if I didn’t already have enough color bases, I’d be hauling them all. I do have my eyes on Pomegrante Punk, though. That cranberry shade has been calling my name since I left her stranded at Walgreens. Whatcha think? Have you tried these babies yet?

Happy Valentine’s Daaaaaay!!

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Illegal Length Fiber mascara

Well, well, welllll….what do we have here? Looks like Maybelline is starting the year off with a new fiber mascara. Considering I find fiber mascaras to be one of my favorite kind of mascaras (after volumizing mascaras, of course), I could not have been more happy. And Maybelline rarely disappoints me when it comes to mascaras. Let’s hope this one won me over…

The packaging looks a bit like Lash Stiletto, uh?

Price: $8.95 in drugstores. Of course you can probably get it cheaper with a coupon.
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims:  “Defy the rules with new Illegal Length Fiber Extensions Mascara. A Maybelline New York first, this new mascara features fiber-extension technology for longer-looking lashes – 4mm visibly longer looking lashes to be exact!

How does it work? Maybelline New York incorporates 4mm black fibers into our formula. These elongated, dark fibers provide a dramatic, almost illegal length to lashes. Our exclusive Fiber Fix formula actually seals the fibers to each lash while the Fiber Fix Brush catches each lash for optimal fiber placement. Lashes extend to their fullest, most traffic stopping lengths! No flaking – no breaking.” (via press release)

The Truth: This wand is the best at defining, y’all. The best!

What I Loved About It: The wand. It’s just amaziiiiing!

What I Didn’t Like: When I think of something, I’ll let you know.

Overall: Maybelline does it again! *does the cabbage patch* I’m so excited! Okay, let’s get back at square one. You know what a fiber mascara is, don’t you? Essentially these little fibers give you dramatic length by attaching themselves on the tips of your lashes. You know how some women wear hair extensions to make their hair longer and fuller? Fiber mascaras do the same thing for eyelashes. I’ve discovered that there are 2 kinds of fiber mascaras; ones that promise volume and others that promise length. Both types of mascaras have to have great wands to be effective. Illegal Length Fiber is winning in that department.

Because of the wand’s slimness, I was able to apply the mascara on the tiny tips of my lashes. This can be challenging with a larger mascara wand but ILF was perfect. Like most fiber lengthening mascaras, the consistency of the formula was far from thick. Which is another good thing. A thick formula would make it difficult for you see the bristles on the wand and applying would be a wee bit of a hazard. Another plus of the wand (can you tell that I’m obsessed with it?) is that because the bristles are so stiff and tiny, applying on the lower lashes are super easy. Woot! Oh and even if length isn’t what you’re going for, the wand does an amazing job at helping you comb your lashes.

ILF lasted all day (most fiber mascaras do) without any smudging or flaking. This mascara also comes in a waterproof formula and I’m interested to see the differences between that and the non-waterproof one.

The best way to apply a fiber mascara for optimum results? Apply it on top of your favorite volumizing mascara. A coat of Maybelline The Falsies + Illegal Length Fiber, I imagine would be an amazing combination. I don’t mind wearing ILF solo though. And like all fiber mascaras, removal is easy peasy. Simply wet your fingers and gently massage your lashes. It’s off  faaaaaast.

Bare Lashes

Lashes after 3 coats

Do I recommend it?: Oh yeahhhh. If you’re one of those guys or gals with super tiny lashes and REALLY want them to stand out, go for Illegal Length Fiber.

Have you tried this mascara yet? What do you think?

My Top 4 Favorite mascaras of 2011

I hope no one noticed that I didn’t do a “My Top Favorite Products of 2011” -type list. Why DIDN’T I do one? I was too busy working on a top secret project. Okay, I’m lying. I got lazy and forgot to do one. But what I do have is a list of my Top 4 Favorite mascaras of 2011.

This wasn’t easy, y’all. I came across A LOT of amazing mascaras last year. These kids happened to be the ones that made the cut.

Queen mascara

This mascara was everything. Everything! From the packaging to the wand, formula and results, this fiber mascara could have very easily been the only mascara I wore all year. You know…if I didn’t have a mascara blog.

Maybelline Great Lash Lots
of Lashes (LOL) mascara

You knew it was coming, right? I raved about how much I loved this mascara the first time I tried it. Aside from it being a FANTASTIC mascara, it has a really groovy wand (it’s heart shaped!) and was 10x better than the original Great Lash mascara. Go Maybelline go!

Clinique Bottom Lash mascara

I loved this mascara so much that I used it all. I don’t think I’ve ever hit the bottom of any mascara tube. This teeny tiny wonder of a mascara makes bringing out those bottom lashes super easy. And it’s just soooo cute.

LORAC Multiplex 3D Lashes mascara

This one may have come as a surprise because I didn’t brag about it as much as I did the others. But considering it’s a preservative-free mascara, it is fantastic! It has a buildable and long lasting formula that really helps lengthen those eyelashes.

Honorable Mentions:

What were some of your favorite mascaras from last year?

Pearl lips by Maybelline ColorSensational

Who loves lipsticks more than lip glosses? I do, darlings. I really do. Maybe it’s the old soul that’s in me but I find lipsticks to be classic and rather riveting. I feel like a “woman” when I apply them. I mean, don’t get me wrong…I love a good gloss but if I had to get rid of those or lipsticks. I’d send glosses to the curb in a heartbeat.

With the holidays rolling around, I’m going to do my best to show y’all lots of cheap lippies for holiday parties, gifts and stocking stuffers. Let’s start with these Maybelline ColorSensational jewels. You can grab these kids anywhere Maybelline products are sold and on All of these lipsticks have a pearl finish and like most lipsticks, are a wee bit drying. I wear a lip balm underneath to keep the moisture in my lips locked in.

Coral Lustre – I’ve never thought that coral lip colors were terribly flattering on my skin complexion. They are a little too cool and pink for my liking. Somehow, this one isn’t half bad. I actually feel okay wearing it without a lipliner.

Disco Pink – is a super pink with a whole heap of shimmer. I think it’s fantastic!

Glisten Up Pink is slightly cooler than Disco Pink whose shimmer isn’t as sparkly.

Nude Glow is a shiny caramel that actually works for me. I’m pretty picky with nudes and I really like this one.

Plum Shine isn’t as dark as a “plum” and that’s a good thing because I’ve had my fair share of burgundy lipsticks. Plum Shine is more of light red wine.

I’ve never claimed to be the best when it comes lipstick swatches so try to stifle those laughs if you see some lipstick creeping up on my check or somethin’. 8)

Whatcha think? See any you like? Disco Pink and Glisten Up Pink are definitely my faves.

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes (LOL) mascara

I’ve been beyond excited about this mascara. Bee-yawn’ed. Mayelline’s Great Lash Lots of Lashes mascara excites me simply because I’ve found it to be the BEST of all of the Great Lash mascaras. I was sworn to secrecy to not say a word about this mascara for quite some time and now, I can finally let it out. Do you know how hard it is not say anything about a mascara that has a heart-shaped brush? Yeah. Not easy at all. Finally! The time has arrived. Brace yourself for the awesomeness of Great Lash LOL mascara.

Price: $6.49
Packaging (brush wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5

What It Claims: Per press release

A Maybelline New York first, the heart-shaped elastomer brush simplifies the application process. In just one swipe, the great Little Grabber brush easily reaches the inner and outer corners of the eye, multiplying and building your lash look with no clumps. Just lots of clean, full lashes with no mess.

The Truth: Oh my words. This isn’t at all like the original Great Lash

What I Loved About It: That wand, baby! It’s one hot mama!

What I Didn’t Like: I hope you only like to apply 2-3 coats of mascara. Any more than that may send you to Clumps City.

Overall: I shall preface this by stating that I was never the biggest fan of the original Great Lash’s wand. I reviewed Great Lash back in 2008 and I don’t know if I was a total mascara reviewing newb back then or what, but despite my not putting it in the review, I was quite displeased with the Great Lash wand. You may say I’ve been spoiled by vibrating and spinning mascara wands to the point where I can’t appreciate a simple and no frills kind of wand, but no…the original Great Lash’s wand is just…meh. It is pretty standard in terms of mascara wands. And for some gals, that works. But in a secret hideaway world, there live us folx who desire MORE when it comes to mascara wands. We want a wand that’s easy to control, can not only sweep through our lashes with ease but also get into these inner corners. Guys and gals like us may be considered needy, but hey…we want what we want.

If the original Great Lash’s wand wasn’t enough for you, the new one is all that and a bag of Skittles. Just look how it compares to the original Great Lash.

Fantastical, right? I know, I know. It’s a beautiful. You’ll be happy to know that this heart-shaped wand (awww, Maybelline loves us) REALLY makes a difference in the overall outcome of the mascara’s performance. If mascara reviewing was math, I’d say that a mascara is made up of 4 parts. You’ve got the wand and the formula. The other two parts are brand and technique but we’ll talk about those later, class.

Having got the great wand part down, I was just wishing on a star that the formula was up to par as well. While the formula of Great Lash LOL is similar to the original Great Lash, LOL’s wand allowed me to pick up more mascara and apply more to the lashes. I was also able to get into those inner corners and lower lashes with no problems. Yes! That is what I’m talking about, Maybelline.

Some of us are picky mascara applicators. We don’t don’t feel as if we’ve done much if we don’t apply a ton of coats. If you’re that kind of applicator, Great Lash LOL may surprise you. Because of the wand’s girth, you shouldn’t need to apply more than 3 coats of mascara. And even that’s pushing it to the limit.  I love this aspect about this mascara. It doesn’t require a lot of fuss to get the job done. You apply one coat, let that dry, apply another coat and you’re done. Easy peasy! Even the Clumps kitten preferred Maybelline’s newest superstar mascara.

In terms of packaging, LOL is the same size and length as the original Great Lash.

From bare lashes to mascara coated lashes in under 3 minutes.

I didn’t experience any flaking or smudging which meant that mascara lasted for hours on end. I’m not the kind of gal that re-applies on the go. A mascara HAS to last all day for me. Great Lash LOL was quite the trooper.

Bare Lashes

Lashes with 3 Coats of mascara

This was such a special mascara to review because not only does this mascara’s release remind of  me of how iconic Maybelline is, but I was also one of the first to test Great Lash LOL out. Very cool. Very very cool.

Do I recommend it?: Um….yeahhhh!! Especially if you tried the original Great Lash and didn’t like the wand. This wand will totally win you over. I promise. Give it a try.

What do you think? Will you give this version of Great Lash a try?

NYFW S/S 2012: Maybelline for DKNY

“The beauty look at DKNY is inspired by a California girl who has come to New York,” said Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer. “It’s about the simplicity of beauty – fresh sun-kissed and glowing.”

Charlotte prepped skin with a light layer of Fit Me! Foundation. She then used a mix of bronzer and blush to create a sun-kissed “California Girl” glow. She started by applying Fit Me! Bronzer in Light Bronze to the temples, top cheeks and eyelids.  Next she applied Fit Me! Blush in Deep Rose to the middle of the cheeks, where a natural flush would appear.

Eye Studio Color Explosion Luminizing Eyeshadow in Caffeine Rush: Charlotte applied the lightest shade from this neutral palette to the inner corners of the eyes. She applied the light beige shade all over the eye up to the brow bone for a subtle, glowing look.

Volum’ Express One-by-One Mascara: Charlotte added instant drama to the eyes with this clump-free, volumizing mascara. “We need to create definition with a strong lash so the eyes won’t be lost among the beautiful hats in the collection,” she said. Charlotte called extra attention to the eye area with perfectly groomed brows. She used Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil to fill in the gaps – creating a perfect frame to the face.

Color Sensational High Shine Lipcolor in Glisten Up Pink: Charlotte created a natural flush to the lips by dabbing this lush pink shade on with her finger.

She finished the lips with a layer of Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched.
