Maybelline ColorSensational: Plums!

Next up in the Maybelline ColorSensational color review iiiis….plum!!

If I had to choose a lipstick color that I think most Black women run to first, I’d say plum.

Plums are safe. They are work-appropriate and can have many different color variations when topped off with lip liners and glosses. I probably have more plum-esque colors in my lipstick collection than any other color.

Meet Mauve-ulous lipstick and Sugared Honey lipgloss.

This duo sat in my purse for a good month. I love them! They complement each other very well. See….

Find 11 more plum lippies in the Maybelline Colorsensational family at your local drugstore, Wal-Mart, Ulta and Target.

So how many plum lippies do you have? Like 48 right? HA!!

Check out my review of the red family here.

Maybelline ColorSensational: Reds!

I love red lipstick. A LOT! Now granted I wouldn’t walk around wearing every day but when I’m feelin’ sassy or sexy….out comes the red.

In this case its Are You Red-y lipstick and Wine All Mine lipgloss.

Both are heavily pigmented and fail to dry out the lippies. That’s a plus in my book. And have I mentioned how heavenly the ColorSensational glosses feel? They smell like honey almond syrup and jelly bean pie…or somethin’ like that. Ha!

I’ve never been good at these up close and personal shots of the lips but er uh…

Intense, right? Are you red-y?

Oh yeah…..
See…that’s what happens when you wear red lipstick. You get all sexy-eyed and start poutin’ the lips. Or…is that just me? Maybelline ColorSensational has 11 more reds….one of ’em has your name on it.

Stay tuned for the next color in the ColorSensational family. Should I do natural, pink or plum? I’m thinkin’ natural.

Maybelline ColorSensational: The Mini-Series!

After attending the fabulous Maybelline ColorSensational event, it only makes sense that I highlight some of these gorgeous lippies, right? So I’ve decided to do a mini-series on a color from each individual shade once a week.

That’s right! I’ve got representatives from Red, Naturals, Plums and Pinks checkin’ in. How fly do they look?

Oh wow…let’s get a close-up.

A beautiful line-up, uh? I even brought their sidekicks….The Corresponding Gloss Crew!

Stay tuned for reviews and swatches! If there is anything specific you would like to know about these babies, just let me know and I’ll include that in the review.

Stay tuned!

Clumps in the Streets: Maybelline ColorSensational Event

So remember in this post when I talked about Maybelline New York heading down South to tell us cool Floridians about their newest kids on the block? I was already heading down that way to visit family so it was totally meant to be that this event landed on the same weekend.

Saturday morning I grabbed Clumps’ Miami intern Briana, her Mommy and my BFF (she wrote an awesome post about this event on her Mommy blog). We headed to the “Little Havana” part of Miami and jetted to the parking lot where the ColorSensational trailer had been set up. There was a crowd of ladies listening to astrology expert Carlos Javier. He was revealing what colors best went with each sign.

Executive Editor of the magazine Siempre Mujer, Maria Cristina Marrero was also there.

“Psshttt….” whispered the intern. “Everyone is speaking in Spanish.”

Ah yes…the entire presentation era en Espanol pero I was fine. I’ve been speaking Spanish since I was a little girl so I was good!

Soon after the presentation, they opened the doors and let us in. The trailer had been set up with lip-over sections. It was gorgeous!

BriAna, the intern, is great…she took all of those photos while I chit-chatted with my lip consultant. I lovingly named her mi madre de labios (my Mother of Lips…ha!)

Together we picked out the perfect lip for moi. The ColorSensational collection has 4 color families to choose from….pinks, naturals, plums and reds. They are neatly categorized by packaging.

Anywhoovers, if you know me…you know I chose red!! And of course it scared me with the initial application.

But within seconds, I was loving it!

We used Very Cherry lipstick.

BriAna even got in on the action. She chose a teen appropriate color that looks so darling on her! Ohhh, to be 16 again!

I’ll be doing swatches and providing more information about the fabulousness that is the ColorSensational lippies. Until then..

SMOOCHES!

Mascara Review: Maybelline Great Lash BIG (vs. regular Great Lash)

I was originally going to review another mascara but with the high volume of requests for Maybelline’s Great Lash BIG I figured I BETTER review this baby here before y’all start e-hating me. HA! Not to mention newer mascaras override older ones. That’s just the rule of thumb for mascara reviewing, riiiiight? Hehe.
As most of you know, Great Lash has been out for quite some time. In fact, it has been rated the #1 mascara by a number of magazines. Do I think it’s #1?
No. It isn’t my favorite. Maybelline has “re-released” Great Lash and gave it a bigger wand. For the purpose of this, I will not only give an extensive review of Great Lash BIG but also compare it to the original.
Is it better?
Worse?
Still overrated?
Check the review….
Maybelline Great Lash BIG mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $4.99 ) Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:

The original Great Lash’s claim:

Great Lash BIG’s claim:

The truth:
I’ll let the pictures talk…..

What I loved about it: See below!

What I didn’t like: See below!

Overall: Okay first, let’s talk about outside packaging.

No changes here! Both the original and the Great Lash are the same in width and height. The only noticeable difference is, of course, the BIG on the new one. To better differentiate between the two mascaras (as if the wand doesn’t do that alone, ha!) I purchased Great Lash BIG in Very Black and Great Lash in Royal Blue.

Whoa! Huge difference, right? Great Lash’s wand always looked pretty “cheap” to me so it’s great to see it upgrade to a more modern and mainstream wand.

At the same time, however, you have to take into consideration that not all women like larger wands; especially ladies with smaller lids and lashes. Bigger wands are a mess for them. They also aren’t so friendly when trying to apply mascara in the corners of the eyes and on the bottom lashes. Let’s just say when attempting to do one of the two with Great Lash BIG, keep a Q-tip moistened with make-up remover nearby.

The new kid….

The old lady….

Great Lash BIG on the left eye.
Great LASH on the right eye.
Crazy brows above both left and right eyes. LOL!

Um, I’m not that impressed with either. As you can see the original really looks a hot blue mess. I was better off not wearing any mascara at all. I should also mention that it made my lashes insanely hard. Which of course led to flaking.
Thumbs down to Great Lash—I need to amend my previous review of that mascara.
Now for Great Lash BIG.
In comparison to the original Great Lash, it indeed beats its predecessor. The volume isn’t bad at all, is it? I found Great Lash BIG difficult to use. The wand makes for difficult separation. I struggled somethin’ serious. I also found that when pulling the mascara out of the tube–I got very little mascara! I have to dip the wand in tube a good 5 times to get my lashes coated for just one coat. The formula isn’t the best. It seems very weak. Which, I suppose would work for ladies who don’t want coated lashes. After all, the packaging does say that the mascara is “buildable”. I get that but my goodnessss…..
This mascara also burns my eyes; a rarity for someone who reviews a different mascara every week! I actually had to stop using it because of the irritation. This, however, did not affect my overall opinion about the mascara. I doubt that the #1 mascara gives the average user burning eyes–otherwise it wouldn’t be #1, right? Maybe my eyes were just goin’ through some thangs.
Having played around with so many mascaras, I guess I don’t understand the hype that is Great Lash. BIG hasn’t changed my opinion either. I can name a dozen other mascaras, drugstore and higher end, that can knock these kids out of the water. I do think they are both overrated. This mascara is average. Certainly not the worst but nowhere near the best.
Clumps of Mascara YouTube subscribers think so too. You should see the comments I’m getting on this mascara. People seem to HATE Great Lash immensely.

Would I recommend it?: Nope. It’s cheap enough to try out if you’re bored but chances are you’ve tried something better.

I also tweeted “Do you like Maybelline Great Lash mascara” on Twitter and check out the responses:
@MitzyG Maybelline Great Lash. Don’t hate but terribly over-rated. Better than nothing, but barely.
@NaturallyAlise I like it, but I have found so many other Maybelline mascaras that are better (read: Stiletto).
@AmyPredsfan I wish I can give you my honest opinion on it but a couple of times I tried it, it made my eyelids swell up.
@Fashionista_911 I think of this as a starter mascara. It’s cheap but it also gets the job done. I love it.
@Chugamagoozers Hate it! With a passion!
@CanadianBeauty just mehhh. Good for makeup artists who go through a lot of mascara and use their own wands but not for everyone else.
@MsTrecie I think it is a classic staple in the makeup world, but with the revolution of mascara I secretly think it is overrated.
@TriedAndTruth hated it! LOL. I think lash stylist is WAY better.

What do YOU think? A fan of Great Lash? Interested in trying Great Lash BIG? Think it’s overrated? Tell me!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Full ‘N Soft

I have finally gotten around to reviewing one of THEE most commonly requested mascaras. And I “think” this completes my reviews of ALL Maybelline mascaras currently in stores. Well, except Lash Discovery and Unstoppable. What do you think? Should I review those?

Maybelline Full ‘N Soft

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7.99 )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “This mascara builds full, soft thick lashes without the brittle feel.

* Prevents loss of lashes with patented Quick Dissolve System that allows easy mascara removal
* No clumps, no globs
* Contact lens safe and hypoallergenic
* Washable; also available in waterproof formula ” (source)

The truth:
Whoa! My lashes really are soft!

What I loved about it: I don’t know why–but I was shocked that my lashes actually stayed soft the entire day. Talk about upholding your claim, Maybelline. That’s friggin’ awesome!

What I didn’t like: Soft….YAY! Full….eh. And the wand is a big boy!

Overall: So I can see why so many of you requested this mascara. It probably stared you down. While you were glancing at the newer mascaras on the market, Mr. Full ‘N Soft was like,
“Hey!! Check me out….I’m old but I’m gold, baby.”

I know I’m not the only one that hears mascaras talking to them.

LOL, I’m kidding y’all. Kinda.

But yeah…Maybelline Full ‘N Soft is not bad. I will say that it isn’t GREAT for me because I desire darker lashes with more volume but this baby is perfect for everyday looks. If I happen to head to the gym after work, I don’t have to worry about it smudging and flaking. You’ll get some length. But not much. I like to think of this mascara as more of a “lash enhancer” if anything. If your lashes are already crazy long and full (then I hate you….lol, j/k) this would be perfect for you!

I should also mention that because it’s soft you don’t have to worry about any flaking. Most mascaras make your lashes hard. When they are hard and brittle you risk them [lashes] breaking and mascara residue falling in your eyes. Eww is right!!

Contact wearer or an allergic sufferer who is always eye-rubbing? Maybelline Full ‘N Soft would work for you too!!

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Pulse Perfection vibrating mascara

It seems like it has been quite a while since I have done a mascara review. I’m glad that good ole’ Maybelline Pulse Perfection is breakin’ a sista’s hiatus. This is another one of those “highly requested for review mascaras”.

This is the FIRST drugstores vibrating mascara. Well, SpinLash did come out a year or so ago, but this is the first we’ve seen from a big name cosmetic company.

Is it amazing?
Is it everything you thought it would be?

Take a look…..

Maybelline Pulse Perfection
vibrating mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($14.99—pretty pricey for a general drugstore mascara purchase, but after all….it does vibrate. )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4.5 out of 5

What it claims: I can show you better than I can tell you! Here is the packaging’s claim:

The truth:
Well, it’s not your average mascara! That’s for sure….

What I loved about it: The Define-A-Lash wand. The mascara’s name in its entirety is “Maybelline Pulse Perfection BY Define-A-Lash. So that’s what you can expect as far as the wand’s look goes. Despite not being an enormous fan of Define-A-Lash (check out my review here) I have always loved its wand. It is perfect for ladies with smaller lids/lashes and gets into those small corners beautifully.

I also like the packaging’s other details. Aside from showing you what the wand looks like before you buy it, it also tells you how to use it!

What I didn’t like: I found that the vibrating was a little too much….at least for me. I don’t have “sensitive eyes” but the vibrating even had my eyes welling up a bit. I also found that it tends to get a little clump-alicious around the 2nd coat. Three coats is definitely a no-no with this mascara as you will certainly be entering Clumps City

Overall: Despite the two or so downfalls I am CRAZY impressed with this mascara. Maybelline has always managed to impress me as far as mascaras go and Pulse Perfecting definitely takes the cake as my favorite Maybelline mascara.

Wait…no, maybe not. I am still married to Lash Stilleto but don’t tell Mr. Pulse that. HA!

Seriously, if you are looking for length, Pulse will give it to ya! Volume? Mmm, it could definitely be better in that department, but it’s not bad. I guarantee that you will be too busy being impressed at the length to even care about volume. I didn’t experience flakiness throughout the day.

I really do wish that I didn’t experience clumps around the 3rd coat—but I did. I wanted to get as much length as possible but Mr. Pulse wasn’t havin’ that. So be careful.

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely! Aside from it being fun to use it really does give you insane results.

The video reaaallly shows the what the vibrating wand does.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet?
Interested? Not so much? Whatcha think?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stylist Washable mascara

Happy Monday!!

Did everyone have great weekends? I had a ball hosting a “Beauty 101″ class with a group of 16-year old young ladies. I even put together a little booklet that I will share with the Clumps of Mascara family later on this week. And the weather in Tallahassee, Florida was absolutely divine! The nomad in me is itching to make another big move but I have to admit….it’s going to be difficult to move to city that isn’t as warm as Florida is this time of the year.

Boy, I sure have been on a Maybelline mascara tip for a while, uh? I can’t help it! These older mascaras may be diamonds in the rough and I may not know about it. Is the Stylist one of them? Or just a big bust?

Check out the review…..

Maybelline Lash Stylist
Washable mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $6. I got it as a BOGO buy from Walgreens )
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 5 out of 5
Bold
What it claims: “Exclusive V-Styling mascara comb sculpts and thickens lashes up to 65%. (source)

The truth:
Aww look! It’s got a baby comb. How cute! In all real seriousness….this is a pretty good mascara. Maybelline is truly one of the best in the mascara making department, IMO.

What I loved about it:
Obviously the wand is pretty cool lookin’. And not only that it is pretty effective in getting ALL of your lashes out there.

I find that it is easier to use than the traditional mascara wand. It coats each and EVERY lash with ease.

What I didn’t like:
This may be the klutz in me, but I ended up getting a TON of mascara on my lower lash line when trying to apply this mascara. I mean, it’s insane…of course I have learned how to manipulate the brush a little better but my first few applications were a hot mess. LOL, literally.

Overall: To be honest…I kinda wanted to hate this mascara. LOL, seriously. I feel like a broken record when it comes to singing praises to Maybelline’s mascaras. But it’s not just simple adoration for these babies. As the saying goes, “Proof is in the pudding” and I hope that you all see that I’m not exaggerating with the before/after photos and videos. Simply put..this mascara is GREAT! Per its claim, it DID thicken my lashes and gave a crazy amount of length. The volume junkie in me would have liked a little more volume but I think that this is great for every day wear. It is easy to remove, doesn’t irritate or flake and is just a pleasure to work with.

LOL…like it’s a co-worker or somethin’. On to the photos.

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

I should probably mention that you really only need one coat of this mascara. Two isn’t at all necessary and I only applied that second coat out of habit.

I like mascaras with the comb! Clinique High Definition Lashes mascara has a wand like this and I found success with that baby too.

Would I recommend it?: Sure do! Especially if you find that your lashes are wild and crazy like me. The comb will set them straight.

Have you ever tried this mascara? A fan? Didn’t find success with it? Do you prefer mascaras with combs? I would love to know your thoughts!

Always,
