5 of the Best Beauty Items Under $10

Best Beauty Items under 10

I’m doing another post with my Makeup Wars sisters and this week we’re talking about some our favorite beauty items that just happen to be under $10 a piece. This is easy for me since I tend to lean more to lower-end cosmetics versus the expensive stuff. I can make more money in life and still have a hard time justifying a $40 mascara. Seriously, y’all. Luckily the babies that I’m mentioning in this posts are not only affordable but easy to find, too. Woohoo!

Best Eye Shadow Palette: Sleek Makeup – $9.60

I first discovered Sleek Makeup sometime last year and I’ve been hooked on them ever since. They recently sent me a box of goodies and I got to sneak a peek at a new palette. I haven’t tried them all but I do own thier  i-Divine AU Natural Palette and giiiiirl, lemme tell you. It is the real deal. I’m amazed at how cheap they are because the quality of the shadows are pretty stellar. Long lasting, extra pigmented and full of various textures, I have yet to come across a palette from them that I didn’t love.

Best Makeup Brushes: Real Techniques – $9.92

I’ve been on the Real Techniques bandwagon for quite some time and I’m still a rollin’. They can do no wrong in my eyes. They are the reason why I don’t even look at higher end makeup brushes. Sold online and at ULTA, finding a makeup brush that is efficient and lasts through tons of applications and washes couln’t be easier. I have a ton of their brushes but really it’s this Core Collection set that I can’t get enough of. I recommend it time and time again to  anyone who wants really good makeup brushes that are also affordable.

Five Drugstore Concealers That You Should Try

Drugstore Concealers

Have you ever been really tired in the morning and had dark circles or bags under your eyes? Do you have imperfections all over your skin? Chances are you need a concealer to take care of those problems! I’ve tried a ton of concealers in my day and some have been really great and some have been absolutely terrible and I’ve felt like they haven’t done anything for me! So if you’re on the hunt for a concealer for you, I’ve made a list of my top 5 favorite drugstore concealers and maybe this list can help you decide when you go out to purchase one!

5. Black Opal Total Coverage ConcealerIt’s hard for a dark brown girl to find a drugstore concealer. The options just aren’t there. Black Opal, however, not only gives us a slew of shade options for darker skin but this concealer is dead on. It’s long-lasting, moisturizing and works very well alone or paired with liquid, creme and powder foundations.

4. Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer: This is another concealer that I also do not use for under eye coverage, it is even thicker than the previous concealer stick I spoke about, but it is PERFECT for when I need to cover up a bit pimple or anything like that! I think it’s primary purpose, at least for me is when I have a random breakout and really need some heavy coverage. This is fairly affordable, retailing for only about $6.00.

Mascara Monday: NYX Le Chick Flick Boudoir mascara

NYX Le Chick Flick mascara

Last year NYX Cosmetics released an entire collection of mascaras and I am finally getting around to reviewing the last one. Le Chick Flick is all about giving waterproof lashes and like all waterproof mascaras that I try out, I had high hopes it. I am way harsh on waterproof mascaras because I’m not looking for a ton of length and volume, I just want longevity and waterproofness. Waterproofness IS a word, isn’t it?

Price: $5.99 from ULTA stores and ULTA.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What It Claims: “NYX Le Chick Flick Boudoir Mascara features a smudge-free formulation that thickens lashes as it delivers deep, dark drama. Dense dome brush reaches each and every lash.” (source)

The Truth: Oh wow…very nice longevity!

What I Loved About It: The wand is pretty awesome.

What I Didn’t Like: Meh, it’s just on the mediocre side in terms of volume and length.

Overall: It is sooooo hard to find a good waterproof mascara. Which is crazy because you would think by now, brands would have developed a decent enough formula. But nope, I am usually let down by most of the waterproof mascaras that I try. For one thing, they HAVE to have decent wands. There’s no need to have wands with a whole ‘lotta frills. Something simple will do. Which is why I love this wand…

Wham, bam and done. It isn’t anything fancy and it does a great job at sweeping through the lashes while generously coating each lash with ease. The formula was very nice to deal with and almost had a bit of a gel-feel to it when applied to the lashes. Like many waterproof mascaras, I found that it did a great job at really adhering to the lashes without clumping them up too much. Two  coats was good enough for me and while I didn’t have those long and voluminous drag queen lashes that I always love, the mascara plumped my lashes up enough.

What really impressed me was how long it stayed around. I worked out in this mascara and it lasted through the blood, sweat and tears that are involved in my strenuous workouts. I’m kidding about the blood part. I think. But yeah, I would wipe sweaty hands across my face plenty of times and this mascara didn’t budge. Score!! This is all I ask, NYX. If you’re going to give me a waterproof mascara, make sure that baby is actually…waterproof. I’m a happy woman.

So so happy.

Do I recommend it?: I do! It’s an affordable waterproof mascara that actually works.

Anyone else out there struggle with finding decent waterproof mascaras?

Mascara Monday: NYX Le Frou Frou mascara

Soooo by now you may be sick of seeing NYX mascara reviews but hey – don’t blame me. They’re the cool kids who decided to release an entire collection of mascaras. And I’m the crazed woman that decided to have a blog alllll about mascaras. So it was inevitable. This is my 2nd to last mascara review of the Boudoir Collection. I had high hopes for this one because I consider it to be my ideal mascara. Volume AND length? Yes please!

Price: $6 at Ulta and at Ulta.com.
Packaging (brush wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What It Claims: “Volumize and lengthen lashes. Dense dome brush to reach each lash.” (source)

The Truth: Well…it isn’t half bad.

What I Loved About It: The wand is nice and I’m loving the volumizing.

What I Didn’t Like: It doesn’t seem to be as long-lasting as I’d like it to be.

Overall: Of all of the mascaras from the Boudoir collection, this one is the one that I’d tango with the most. And why? It’s an ideal mascara in that it promises to give me both length and volume. I think if you were to poll most mascara wearers, many would say they’d want the same thing. So I wonder if this mascara is the most popular out of all of them. I’m not sure. But still…this baby came with a ton of expectations. And for the most part, she did okay. The wand is pretty good.

It’s nothing amazing and it’s nothing terrible. Which I’m okay with. Sometimes you just need short and sweet when it comes to wands. The bristles are tight enough to help with elongating the lashes and providing the length. I also found the bristles to be plush enough to help with sweeping from the base of the lashes to the tips to help with volume. It is also thin enough to get into those inner corners pretty well. So yeah…it’s definitely a full functioning mascara wand that will work beautifully for all eyes.

Formula-wise, it’s got a nice in-between formula. NYX’s mascara formulas are always pretty consistent with me. I never have many complaints about them and this one is no different. Application is easy and I found that I got more length than volume. The lengthening was REALLY nice where the volume was just so so. Well, so so for me. Y’all know how much I need to have those super crazy out there lashes. 😎 But, I found what volume it did give a good enough amount for the average mascara wearer. It isn’t by any means the kind of volume that you’d want if you were out on the town, but it’s do-able.

So while the mascara functioned well, I was little thrown off at its longevity. It didn’t seem to want to stick around long enough for me. I’m not the type to keep re-applying mascara throughout the day. I apply it once and expect it to last ALL day. That wasn’t the case with Frou Frou. Midday after wearing it, I’d notice that my lashes weren’t as WOW-y. I found that to be weird because I didn’t have any issues with flaking. After 3 coats of application, I would not have expected it to disappear on me. Oh boo.

Grr!

Do I recommend it?: It’s a great everyday mascara if you aren’t looking for too much drama but if you are a fan of longwear mascaras, this one may not be up your alley.

Have any of you NYX lovers tried this mascara yet?
