FOTD Friday: I got the blues….and specs!

It’s Friday!!! Yesss….I am SO excited. This weekend I am heading to Tallahassee to see my alma mater play the Florida State Seminoles (double boo!). I have so much school spirit that it’s like…..ridiculous.

….and it’ll be my first football game of the season. I’ll probably go all out and rock green and gold eyes and nails. And I’ll be linking up with some of my college roommates and friends. Am I the only one that thinks college football is way more exciting than the NFL? I’m just sayin’….

So guess who got her glasses? Moi! If you missed last week’s FOTD Friday, you’ll have to click here. I had so many lovely ladies show off their gorgeous glasses and it actually made me get excited about mine.

So without further ado….it is me and my new frames.

Ohmigoodness, that blush is insane! I don’t remember buying it (did you give it to me, Danyelle?) but it some how resurfaced in my blush stash and I just adore it so.

…oh goodness, my bra strap is showing.
Clumps of Mascara strikes again!

Covering that pimple under my lips. It’s huge!
And red! I mean, honestly…..

So the glasses are growing on me. I really like the color. I have another pair that are purple. It’s amazing how much better I can see. Now that my eyes aren’t working so hard maybe those weekly killer migraines I get will cease.

Let’s hope!

Okay loves….have a wonderful and spectacular weekend! Motivate and be motivated!

Stay beautiful,

Sista Show-Off: Operation Beautiful

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

When I was a little girl my Mommy called me “Mary Sunshine”. I was always that annoyingly perky child with a gapped tooth smile.

Guess what?

I STILL get called Mary Sunshine. I’m not going to pretend like I live in a world of sprinkles, rainbows and cupcakes but having a positive attitude is a MUST for me. It is a way of life and I firmly believe in spreading positive vibes.

Reader Claire from England (hi honey!) put me on to a website called OperationBeautiful.com. The mission behind OpBeau is to end “Fat Talk” by leaving inspirational messages any and everywhere. It’s that simple. Something this simple can change someone’s mind or their perspective. Or even their life.

We NEED messages like this. After getting inspired at the thought of inspiring, I spent some time writing little notes like this…

….and this

…and this

I have about 20 or so in my purse and at any given moment, I’ll post them anywhere. In public restrooms, on treadmills in my gym….shoot, even the grocery store!

The best part about leaving these notes isn’t feeling amazing because you’ve done something nice—it’s watching the look on people’s faces when they’ve read the note.

I am so thankful for the Founder of Operation Beautiful. Catlin has started a mission that is rapidly spreading alllll over the world. I am proud to join her and the hundreds of other ladies who have participated in Operation Beautiful.

I say you try it, family. We really need a movement like this.

Kudos to you, Catlin!

Amor de Lacquer: Diamond Cosmetics’ Matte collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Are you sick of matte nail polishes yet? Because I’m not. I have reviewed quite a few from various nail polish brands. They all had their issues. When I tell y’all Diamond Cosmetics’ mattes were the easiest to deal with…I’m so not kidding!

Check ‘em out!

Matte Mulberry took me by surprise. I expected it to be super matte, but it wasn’t. It was opaque in only one, that’s right ONE coat and quickly became my favorite in the bunch.

Matte Burgundy is so much fun! I was afraid that it would look super dark on the nails but it didn’t. It stayed true to its name and will definitely be one of my top color choices for Fall!

Matte Smoke is a matte gray without shimmer or shine. After purples, greens, blues and oranges (hehe!) grays are my favorite nail polish colors. Smoke didn’t give me any issues. It took longer to dry than the others but who am I to complain when I ended up with a fabulous mani?

Matte Black is just that. A matte black. I own about three of these and this one is probably my favorite. Flawless application, opaque in two coats and long lasting. Loves it!!

The gang altogether!

Well well wellll, another reason why I am a Diamond Cosmetics fan. These mattes are incredible, y’all! I didn’t have any issues that are prevalent with most mattes. These issues include:

-Chipping within hours
-Dragging
-Bubbling
-Drying too quickly resulting in uneven coverage
-Not drying quickly enough
-Denting
-Applying messily

They are buttery smooth and all are opaque with two coats. These are not super matte-y. If you have been itching to try mattes but don’t too much like the “matte” look…these may be right up your alley.

And guess what? They are only $2.

$2!!!!

That’s it. Seriously the best deal ever.

Buy these and more for $2/bottle at DiamondCosmetics.com.

Think these will make you fall for mattes? Have you tried any of Diamond Cosmetics’ polishes?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Mascara Monday: Smashbox Lash DNA mascara

Well nooow, this is a Clumps of Mascara first! With Lash DNA being the first Smashbox mascara I have reviewed, I gave it high expectations. Did it deliver? Or did it make me MAD?

Get it? DNA…MAD?

*crickets*

Awww, bring on the review!

Smashbox Lash DNA mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 (around $19.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “Our revolutionary new scientifically-engineered mascara is packed with proteins and amino acids that bind to lashes for genetic defying length and strength. The unique double helix brush grabs each lash, no matter how small, for the ultimate fanned out effect. Dramatic jet black shade intensifies and defines. Defy genetics with Lash DNA Mascara.”

The truth:
This mascara has one of the most amazing wands I have EVER seen. It’s sick, I tell ya!

What I loved about it: The wand is great. Phenomenal. Innovative. Perfect.

The “double helix” wand makes it so that that you can extend your lashes in several ways.

What I didn’t like: I would have liked to achieve a little more volume. But after a good 3 coats of mascara, it didn’t seem to give me that without clumping me up a bit.

Overall: Soooo, I don’t know why it has taken so long but yay to me for finally reviewing a Smashbox mascara. Lash DNA broke me in and I now have high standards for all of the other Smashbox mascaras I review. I can’t stress this enough—the wand is incredible. It really assists in extending the lashes. I love that you are able to maneuver it in many different directions.

See!

The packaging shows you three steps in which you can use the wand. It is difficult to photograph but the wand has a “twist” to it. This makes it easy to achieve all three steps–which I actually do each time I used this mascara. Lash DNA also gave my lashes a little gloss to them which was a nice little surprise.

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

How I applied it:

Would I recommend it?: Absolutely! The wand is definitely worth a try.

Have you tried Lash DNA? Love it? Want it?

Tell me!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

FOTD Friday: Beauty through Lenses

Happy Friday, lovely ones!

Soooo, last week I saw the optometrist for the first time in like…7 years. I know, I know….trust me when I say I will never wait that long again. After feeling like I was drunk with my eyes being dilated and all, the doc tells me I need glasses.

“Great” I say with an exasperated sigh.

Instead of being concerned about the cost of these specks (I’m so cheap) I start envisioning my grown self with glasses. The thought didn’t make me happy. In fact, I was down about it.

It wasn’t until I tweeted my disappointed that I started to feel better. So many of my Twitter friends were telling me how much they loved their glasses and how I would love mine too.

So now I can’t WAIT until I get mine. Next FOTD Friday they will make their debut but in the meantime I wanted to feature some fly ladies rockin’ their specks. I also plan to do “looks that make my eyes pop even though I wear glasses”. Woo!

Kate from Amethyst Makeup is such a cutie pie! This 18 year old cutie (and baby blogger….show her some love!) makes glasses-wearing look chic and stylish. And how gorg is that scarf?

Oh Tonda mama….you look so professionally stunning. I think you need a raise. Visit Tonda’s Twitter page here.

Blogging beauty and YouTube guru Ren from Makeup by Ren Ren matches her glasses with her lippies! Hotness!! She loves MAC’s Funtabulous Dazzleglass as much as I do.

Clumps of Mascara’s own, Tamar, says “I’ve been wearing glasses for years! I really had to see the beauty in them because for a while I felt unpretty. When I finally accepted my beauty through lenses I was brave enough to get contacts. Now I can alternate.” Loves it!

Kelly from Goudly Lox Reviews is so fab, right? I don’t know what to compliment first….her hair, the necklace OR the glasses. She rocks them all beautifully and I love how her glasses give her a sassy but friendly and approachable look.

Wowsers Ms. Allyn….that fro is all kinds of fierceness! Pero your anteojos (Spanish for glasses) are even fiercer. Follow her on Twitter and tell her to update her blog. She has a lot to share with the beauty blogosphere!

Doesn’t Daenel from Living Outside the Stacks look like one of those people that you know you don’t know but you feel like you’ve met her before? She has such a classically beautiful look. Very subtle and natural. And er uhhh….those earrings=gottahavethem!

I think Lachelle and I are cousins and just don’t know it yet. Cuzzo resides at Polish Beauty Blog (fabulous nail blog for brown skin!). Here’s what she says about glasses.

“One time I had a girl ask me why I even bothered to wear eyeshadow and mascara if I have on glasses! What kind of question is that?! I think that wearing glasses shouldn’t stop you from loving makeup! In fact, when you look at glasses from a prospective of all things beauty; they could be seen as an accessory. I just recently got new glasses from DKNY and I couldn’t be happier!”

Massiel’s curls are poppin’! And her naturally thick brows (that many envy) plus her fabulous speckies equal a whole bunch of fabulousness. Rock on, Massiel! Hit up my girl on Twitter!

Mignon from Intellectual Soul. She’s got an inviting smile to go along with her beautiful shades. She makes you just want to run up and give her hug!

Leave it to a support system from the blogosphere and Twittah to make a gal feel better about glasses. And many thanks to my girls for their photo submissions.

Do you wear glasses? Love them? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em?

Check out the video I did in which I dropped a few tips about how to make your eyes stand out while wearing specs.

Sista Show-Off: Funlayo from AseIre.com

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com

Greetings CoM sistas!

I’m ‘Funlayo (pronounced “Foon-lah-yo,” it means, “She was given to me to cherish” in Yoruba) and I’m elated that Brittany has given me a chance to share with you all just a little of what I have learned – and am still learning – on my journey. One of my favorite organizations, DeAlmas Women’s Collective (check them out!) uses the slogan “The Feminine Spirit: Empowerment from the Inside/Out” and I believe that beauty, like empowerment is something that has to come from the inside and shine out. You can be as pretty, made up, smelling good, hair looking tight as you want but if you don’t work on your inner beauty too, you’re only doing half the job.

I want to use “Inside Out” to share nuggets of wisdom to help develop INNER beauty and to recommend products that I like to help enhance OUTER beauty. I’m a low maintenance lady but there are some products I absolutely love and I’m looking forward to sharing those with you! This is gonna be fun!

Since we’re talking about beauty, it seems fitting to open with this quote by Sally Field who said: “It took me a long time to not judge myself, through someone else’s eyes.” Seeing ourselves through our own eyes is a struggle for many of us – particularly us brown girls who have been told that our hair is too nappy, noses and lips too big, hips to wide and skin too dark to be considered beautiful. But ladies: we ARE beautiful in all of our glory! We don’t have to adhere to anyone’s standards but our own; we don’t need anyone to validate our beauty. All we need is confidence in the fact that we are perfect and beautiful just the way we are.

Affirmation:
I am beautiful because I say so! I see myself through my own eyes, not anyone else’s.

Now that we’ve worked on the inside, you know what I like to use to enhance my outer beauty? Bronzer! Brittany loves bronzers and so do I – they give your skin such a lovely, natural-looking glow that’s especially great for summer and that will help you keep that lovely sun-kissed summer look through the fall.”. My choice is Wet n’ Wild MegaPump Bronzzer in Brazilian Bronze #989 . It goes on smooth and gives me the perfect glow with just a touch of shimmer. It’s available at most drug stores and, at around $3, the price is definitely right.

‘Til next time, ladies! Peace, blessings and beauty – inside and out!

FOTD Friday: Work Place Purple

Happy happy Friday, my darlings! Labor Day is coming up and I’ve got a pretty big weekend planned. Woo! I’m exciiiited. Stay tuned for photos of all of the happ’ns.

Soooo, lately I’ve been feeling a little uninspired with eye make-up. Not that I have the time to play around with it anyway. When getting ready for work, I have a good 10 minutes to throw together a workplace appropriate look. Most days it works. But other days the ‘creative’ in me seeps out and wants to come up with new looks.

I was in a “purple” mood so I pulled out MAC’s Vibrant Grape.

I freakin’ LOVE this color. It has always been one of my favorite purples. But it was a little too dominating on the lids.

See what I mean….

I mean, I could bang it out and make it nice smokey eye but come ooooon, I can’t wear a smokey purple eye to work.

Check out what I came up with. And don’t be laughin’ at my “needs to be threaded brows”. I got them done shortly after this FOTD. Ha!

FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
Rimmel Natural Bronzer

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance

MAC Ochre Style e/s
MAC Vibrant Grape e/s
Make Up For Ever #92 e/s
NARS Albatross highlighter
Lancome Oscillation mascara
LIPS:
MAC lipliner in Nightmoth
Inglot lipstick in #65
Kissable Couture’s Rose Gardenia

And could it be? My skin is acting right for once. Of course as you read this, I have a good 12 pimples or so. They came out of nowhere I tell ya.

Whatcha think? Is it possible to make purples professional?

Enough P’s for ya?

Haaa!!! Happy weeeekeeeend!

Stay beautiful,

Amor de Lacquer: Zoya’s Truth Collection

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Your resident Zoya girl has returned with another review. This time I’m reviewing the Truth from the Truth and Dare Fall 2009 collection. It’s a 2 part collection 12 polishes….and I’m tellin’ you…there is somethin’ for everyone.

Seeeee….

Ohhhh, how pretty are these babies? I must warn you…my pictures do not do them any justice. I tried photographing them in the light. And I tried photographing them with my camera’s flash. They still come out pretty funky. In fact the most accurate the colors are in the photos above.

Ready? Let’s go!

Penny is described as a golden metallic shimmer. This is one color I didn’t think I would like when I first saw it. I’ve never been a fan of gold nail polishes on warmer skin tones. But Penny works well for me. In fact, I REALLY like her.

Kalmia is described as a red and gold shimmer. Not bad! Quite an interesting color.

Anaka is described as a shimmery hot pink. Of course I love it. This color is awesome!!! She is pretty dupe-able so I don’t consider her a must have but the nail polish addict in me can never have too many colors like this.

Isla is described as blackened red shimmer have always. I LOVE this color. Isla will definitely be one of my Holiday ’09 colors. Simply stunning.

I am missing Drew and Salma. Would you believe these chicks could not be located in time for the personal photoshoots? They were ready to go for the group picture but disappeared soon after. *sigh*

I like this collection. It isn’t my FAVORITE from Zoya but it’s one of those collections that will appeal to everyone. I think Isla is a total must have. Anaka too. Her hot pink shimmer is fabulous!

I used two coats for each and didn’t have any application problems. I mean….do I ever with Zoya? I used Zoya’s Anchor base coat but I did not use any top coats.

Buy these and more for $6/bottle at Zoya.com.

What do you think? Own any of these? Want ‘em or not so much?
