Mascara Monday: Lancome Oscillation Powerbooster primer

So I reviewed the world famous Lancome Oscillation mascara primer here. And I absolutely loved it. Is Powerbooster a nice little addition? Or a nice little rip off?

Check out the review….

Lancome Oscillation
Powerbooster mascara primer

Price: 2 out of 5 (around $39.00 )

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims:

“* Conditions: to fortify and strengthen lashes
* Primes: to prepare and improve lash surface, separates, defines for a perfect smooth lash surface. Vibrations: Wraps lashes with formula up to 360°, to reinforce separation and coverage; formula is coated onto lashes to allow for mascara to glide
* Boosts the appearance of natural lash growth: healthier base
* Maximizes mascara lash results: maximized effects of mascara applied over it – you will see immediate results; Powerbooster intensifies color, longer lasting mascara

Results are spectacular: visibly stronger, fuller, longer day after day.” (source)

The truth:
It’s kinda pricey for a primer…..I can’t even lie. But for extreme EXTREME lashes, I guess it’ll do the trick.

What I loved about it: It has a wand just like the regular Oscillation!

I love this wand! It is great at getting allll of those lashes. The Powerbooster has a bit of a curved look to it. I’m not sure if I damaged it or if it’s supposed to be that way. Hmm, it is also a tad bit more flimsy than the original Oscillation. This isn’t bad per se but I prefer a super sturdy wand for more control. Still not complaining because the bristles are phenomenal!

What I didn’t like: The price still bothers me. I know Lancome is a higher-end brand but $40 on a primer is…..wowsers.

Overall: First, let’s give props to Lancome to rolling out with another innovative mascara. I mean, the vibrating mascara had me at “hello” but a vibrating primer? Now that’s just too cool for words.

Let’s compare the two for a minute….we know that both are similar, if not identical. And if you put them side-by-side, they look that same from those angles too.

See!

So no major changes there. The formula of most primers are usually creamier than a mascara’s formula. Not a bad thing–simply an observation.

The key to primers is applying mascara on top of them before the primer dries. This isn’t too much of an issue with Lancome’s. So yay in that department! I purposely waiting a good 4-5 minutes before applying my mascara and my lashes remained primer-coated without any stiffness.

Now check out my lashes before I applied Powerbooster.

Womp womp…not bad but could be better, right? Check out what I get with one quick run through of Powerbooster on my lashes.

Whoooooa! Not so bad for just a primer right?

And then with one coat of the regular Oscillation, I got this:

I kinda like the look of my lashes with just the primer. HA!

I have mixed feelings about a vibrating primer. On one hand, I love it. It really gets my lashes OUT THERE before mascara application. On the other hand, it seems semi-pointless with the fabulousness that is Lancome Oscillation mascara. Buuuut, is it great with other non-vibrating mascaras. Yes!!

Do you need both the vibrating wand AND the vibrating mascara? I don’t think so. Tell me if you can tell a difference between the above photos and the ones below.

This time I used Oscillation by itself WITHOUT the primer.

(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 1 coat of mascara

Ummm, yeah…..I don’t see THAT much of a difference. So I really am on the fence.

Would I recommend it?: I think Oscillation Powerbooster is a great little splurge if you have the money but I’d much rather spend my money on the regular Oscillation. And even if money wasn’t an issue, I would still go with Oscillation.

Unless of course you’d like to use the primer with many different mascaras.

So what do you think? You want it? Got it? Love it? Hate? Tell me!

FOTD Friday: Power Words

Hi my darlings,

I am skipping the regular face-of-the-day post for this week. I hope you don’t mind. I thought I’d share some random quotes I’ve been tweeting all week.
I am finding that putting out positive vibes does so much for me as it does for others. You should try it.
Remember….Clumps of Mascara is more than just beauty behind mascaras and blushes. Y’all know inner-beauty trumps all of that.
All of these little quotes came from me (unless otherwise stated) and I decided to toss in some throwback photos just for fun.
Peace sisters and happy weekends to all!

Yes, I know it’s a Monday, but you better find something
to be happy about. It ain’t THAT bad.

We really are in more control than we think we are.
Think about it.

Life is short. Follow your passion. And then figure
out how you can get paid for it.

(heard this on the radio!)

Life ain’t fair. This is a fact. You have the ability to do
WHATEVER you want .This is also a fact. Live it and do it, people.

Unless you’re willing to attempt to alleviate it, stop complaining
about the issues in your life. Put up and shut up or change it!

If you have any words or inspirations, feel free to share them!

And if you’re in the TV watchin’ mood–check out how fierce this little lady is!

Amor de Lacquer: Orly’s Once Upon A Time, Fall 2009

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Fall collections are a coming!! I’m excited to see what kind of goodies my favorite nail polish brands are coming out with.
I’ve been a fan of Orly for quite some time. How can you not love a nail polish company that has a rubberized handle? This is great for professional nail techs as well as regular ole’ gals who obsessively polish their nails every day. I played around with Orly a lot this summer. See some of the beautiful spring-y colors I hauled?

I was even inspired to do funky designs!
Follow me on a Once Upon A Time fairy tale.
Introducing some of our characters….

Enchanted Forest

Now what’s a fairy tale without an enchanted forest? Not any enchanted forest will do. This forest has to be rich of dark and creamy green-y goodness. It must be opaque in only 2 coats. And it must be a cream.

Poison Apple

How can something so poisonous look so beautiful? It makes me question if it is indeed….poisonous. Well, if you swallow it–it is. If you apply two coats on your nails, however, you will find yourself captivated by the beauty that is a….how can I say it? A “sho nuff red”. This is the ultimate red. The kind of red polish that I couldn’t wear as a little girl. The kind of red polish that every lady needs in her stash.

Pixie Dust

After we’ve dodged the wicked witch and her poison apple, it’s only right that we come across fairies that sprinkle our locks with pixie dust. What’s left of the mix is thrown in a bottle and used as nail polish! This pixie dust looks like Zoya’s Harley and OPI’s Sheer Your Toys had a little baby. And this is what they produced. With micro silver glitter making a tiny yet memorable appearance, Pixie Dust is…..a must.

What a fun collection, Orly!! I have since removed the darling little jewels and put them on a keyring. I love them! I had no issues with applications. Enchanted Forest was a little thick but nothing that made me want to cry. I have some more hauling to do of the rest of this collection. There are 3 other characters just calling my name. Especially that Prince Charming. This collection will be available September 2009 for $7.50. My best spot for grabbing Orly polishes is at Sally Beauty. They have crazy deals on them at times. And so does Ulta!
Are you an Orly fan?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Lash Blast Length

Yeaaaa mon!! CoverGirl hits us with another Lash Blast mascara. This baby is supposed to make your lashes 80% longer using Elsta Nylon.
Many of us have high hopes after finding so much success with the original Lash Blast. Did this one deliver?
Is it just as good if not better than its big sister?
We’ll seeee…..
CoverGirl Lash Blast Length

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $7 at drugstores, Wal-Mart and Target)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: “A perfectly matched system that combines an advanced Super-Length brush and our unique lengthening Elsta-Nylon formula for extreme lash length that won’t break or flake off. “

The truth:
I’m glad to see another lengthening mascara hit the market. This one ain’t too shabby.

What I loved about it: The wand is great! I would have loved if the tip was a little more triangular just so I could attach those fibers to the inner lashes a little easier. But overall, the bristles (all 450 of ‘em….I counted. Hehe, j/k) are great at grabbing my lashes.

What I didn’t like: I won’t complain about the lack of volume because I know most lengthening mascara have this issue–that issue being that they ONLY lengthen. I wish I could have gotten a bit more length.

Overall:
Lash Blast is back, baby!! I think we need to throw a party! When I first heard about this mascara, I was excited. Then again—I get excited about the release of all mascaras.
But Last Blast is different because a great deal of consumers all over the word seemed to like it. Check out my review here. Cover Girl has decided to join the mascara bandwagon and release a mascara that has some innovative formula that gives the effect of wearing real lash extensions. We have seen this before from Too Faced Lash Injection, Imju Fiberwig, Blinc Kiss Me and L’Oreal Lash Extension beauty tubes. I have nicknamed these mascaras “fiber mascaras” because they all have little “fibers” (CoverGirl’s LB Length’s are called nylon fibers) that attach on to the lashes creating looooong lashes.
Wait—I was able to catch one of those fibers in action. Look to the right of the brush. Do you see one? It’s waving at you!
What I love about CoverGirl’s attempt in this is how light my lashes feel. They don’t feel heavy and I’m not enduring the flakiness that some fiber mascaras may have.
Now–I really wish I could have gotten some more length. Actually, a lot more. My lashes don’t behave so well with JUST a lengthening mascara. They tend to act all wonky and I have to do a lot of manipulation just to make them look decent.
See…..

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of mascara

To show how much better lengthening mascaras behave when they have a little help from a volumizing partner, I used 1 coat of Lancome Defincils Pro AND 2 coats of CoverGirl Lash Blast length on the left eye vs. 2 coats of Lash Blast Length by her lonesome on the right eye.

Can you see a little more volume on the left eye’s lashes? I can.

Would I recommend it?: I do because I think it will be be phenomenal for ladies with extremely short lashes. And if your lashes behave better than mine….you will really like it. I think it’s worth a try for any avid mascara shopper out there!
I’m playing around with embedding my videos in posts but we’ll see how long this lasts. Mofos be stealin’ vids, man. :( But do check out the video review and see this mascara in action.

This baby will be available
September 2009!
So what do you think?
Excited about trying it?
Were you a fan of the original Lash Blast?

A crazed mascara reviewer,

FOTD Friday: Tarte Cosmetics in the house!

Happy happy Friday, sweets!
As promised I am shootin’ you another FOTD from my Tarte Femme Fatale palette.

Hopefully you had a chance to indulge in Tarte’s 40% off sale. This palette is full of shimmery goodness that works well for daytime and nighttime looks.
The colors were pigmented and while I did endure some fall-out I found that I was able to create a toooon of looks with the palette. Including a pretty wearable work-appropriate smokey eye.
[NOTE] Now my skin is going through some things because I am on some new treatments per my dermatologist’s counseling. I thought about not even doing an FOTD but that would imply that you can’t be beautiful with jacked up skin.
And we all know I’m about going against the grain….rock on acne sufferers! We are still fine and gorgeous!
FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa Blush

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance

L’Oreal HIP Cream shadow paint in Witty
Tarte Femme Fatale eyeshadow palette
MAC Blacktrack fluidline
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Zero
Cover Girl Lash Blast Length mascara

LIPS:
MAC Funtabulous Dazzleglass (seriously the best dazzleglass EVER!)

Why did I forget I had those rollers in my hair? Haaaa!!!
A mess, y’all. A mess.

And look at that! Zoya’s Fergie almost matches my laptop case. Tres cute!
Got word from ma bird that this Tarte palette is already sold out but standby—if you can’t snag it from Sephora, I would wait until it becomes available. It is quite the jewel!
Have a wonderful weekend, family. Love y’all to pieces!
Stay beautiful,

Beauty Beehaviors: Tyra Banks + "Real Hair"

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

The entertainment and celebrity blogosphere actually had some news that interested me. After Kim Kardashian changing her hair color, of course. LOL….I’m being crazy sarcastic, y’all.
But seriously…Tyra Banks has decided to do the season premiere of her show wig-less. She is has even coined September 9th as “Real Hair Day”.
Check this:
“This season on The Tyra Show we’re taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they’ve got and be proud! For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that – no fake hair, I’m rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we’re declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!” (source)

Being that I have had 2 blogs, photo albums, several videos and even hosted a party for my natural hair, I guess it’s safe to say that I love my natural hair to the max. I’m not the biggest fan of fake hair for myself and when I openly said this on Twitter–guess what? Many of you agreed with me saying that “real hair” is what’s hot in the streets.

So I ask you this question….
Do you prefer wearing your own hair or jazzing
it up with weaves, wigs and extensions?

Mascara Monday: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara

Everytime I look at the name of this mascara it reminds me of Mr. Cheek’s “Lights Camera Action”. That was my jaaaam in high school.
The question is—is this mascara as hot as the song?
Hmmm…..

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!

Price: 3 out of 5 ($18 at Sephora, Sephora.com and Tarte.com)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! 4-in-1 Mascara is what we call a push-up bra for your lashes—a 4-in-1 (lengthening, curling, volumizing, and conditioning) dermatologist- and clinically-proven to increase the appearance of lash volume by 430% after applying giving dramatic, thick and sexy lashes.” (source)

The truth:
This mascara makes a lot of promises. I don’t think it lives up to ALL of them.

What I loved about it: The packaging is sooooo cute.

What I didn’t like: The claims…they were exaggerated a bit and let’s just say they didn’t deliver to the level that I thought they would.

Overall:

This is one mascara that I always looked at when I first discovered Sephora. I mean, the packaging is just darling. I have always had it on my radar. I know that most mascaras make outrageous claims but when I read this one’s I just KNEW it was something special.
Imagine my surprise when it turned to be….just okay.
I mean, don’t get me wrong. It’s not bad. It’s just average. I didn’t experience a great deal of length and very little volume. By the second coat my lashes started to lump together. My lashes did get a nice little glossy effect but *sigh* that didn’t make up for the lack of va-va-voom lashes I realllly wanted.
I can appreciate that this mascara is green-friendly though. Your lashes are free of synthetic fragrances, sulfates and parabens. Gotta love that!
The wand? Eh. Not bad but not the best.

Would I recommend it?: It’s worth a try. Didn’t work too well on my lashes but doesn’t mean it work well on others.

A fan of this mascara? Whatcha think?
