FOTD Friday: Red/Gold hair and eyes!

Hellllooooo darliiiings! And Happy Friday to you! A day or so ago I spent some time looking at a few of my past FOTD Friday looks.
Wow.
And excuse the ebonics but “I be on some other stuff.” LOL!!! I get so much solace knowing that my blog is titled Clumps of Mascara. It means I don’t have to be perfect. No Photoshop needed. You get the unedited version. And I don’t apologize for it because you know what? We are all perfectly imperfect. Yep!!!
Sooo, speaking of past FOTDs, I came across a look I did circa Summer 2007.
*ignore the unblended lipliner.
Y’all know I struggle with that. LOL*
OMG, I used to LOOOVE dabbing golds in my inner-V and burgundy from the middle of the lid to the outer-V. I called this look Arabian nights. I have have a thing for deep dark reds, golds and purples.
And not just on the lids, in my hair as well! I spontaneously dyed a few of my locs.
See!

They are the inspiration behind this look.
FACE:
MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
Tarte Green Siren natural cheek stain

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance

L’Oreal HIP Cream shadow paint in Witty
NARS Albatross (highlighter)
Cargo bronzer in medium and MAC Amberlights(Inner-V to lid)
MAC Handwritten e/s (crease)
MAC Coppering e/s (outer-V)
MAC Blacktrack fluidline
Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Zero
I forgot to put some on! *gasp*

LIPS:
Stila Lip Glaze in Peach Cobbler

Those dyed locs are so random, right? What can I say? I got bored and wanted to spice up my hair a bit. I would to add a rich purple but I can’t find any purple dyes. :( Anyone know of any? You can continue to follow my hair journey at LocRocker.com.

And just because I know she is now an active reader of Clumps of Mascara, some random shots of my little sister Imani and I. She spent the week with me last week and we had a little TOO much fun with the MacBook.
Love you sis!
I hope everyone is off to a fantabulous weekend!!
Oh, next week is a themed week. Stay tuned and get excited!

Stay beautiful,

Beauty Beehaviors: Have you ever visited the derm?

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

Well, I did it.

I have been dealing with mild acne for a good 2 years now and after trying EVERYTHING, I thought it was time to seek professional help. I visited the dermatologist for the first time this week. It was an interesting experience to say the least.
After telling me things I already know (I be doin’ my research, yo!) the derm gave me 2 ‘scrips for acne medicine. I have been doing more research to see what I’m getting myself into. We’ll see how that goes.
Riddle me this…..

Have you ever visited a dermatologist?

Was it a good experience? Not so much? Do you go regularly or was it a one time thing?
Tell me allll about it!

But Black Women Can’t: Get Wrinkles….

Hello Clumpers! This is Tamar and I would like to welcome to another But Black Women Can’t post. The purpose of this series to dispel the many myths and stereotypes that have haunted Black women for centuries. Colors we can’t wear, products we shouldn’t touch….it’s getting old. It’s time we start reclaiming our identities and defining our own beauties. Who’s with me?!! Email your suggestions or ideas to TamarForClumps@gmail.com. I would love to try out any theory you may have.

All my life I have been surrounded by beautiful women of color. I was always taught that “Black don’t crack” meaning that we can’t get wrinkles and in our case that includes breakouts. The only product I saw my Grandma use on her face was Noxzema and her skin never showed any signs of aging. I can look into my Mom’s bathroom and find that same blue container.

She follows the same rules. But me? I decided to go a different route. I believe that every woman has beautiful skin. I also know that we HAVE to take care of it! I’m the type of woman that rarely gets any type of breakout. I don’t know if it’s because of genetics or because of the mountain of products I’ve tried over the years. I’ve used just about everything from Clean and Clear to witch hazel to alcohol to Proactive and guess where I ended up? Right back to Noxzema! I will be 28 this month and I’m positive that when I’m my Mom’s age (I’m not tellin’ how old, I’m scared) my skin will be just as beautiful as hers. See my Mom!

I use Noxzema along with a a few other products thrown in like a serum and I use a night cream that I’ve yet to review. In my opinion, none of us are safe when it comes to wrinkles but we all can protect ourselves. I will be perfectly happy when I’m 90 years old with a million wrinkles as long as I know that I lived a full life and did something worth talking about.

What steps are you taking to prevent premature aging? Is there a product that you saw your Mom use when you were young that you find yourself using now?

Until next time,
TAMAR

Amor de Lacquer: Lippmann Collection ‘Celebrate’ Set

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

A month or so ago a college girlfriend and I (hey Asha darlin’!) found ourselves in Nordstrom for a beauty event. Every summer Nordstrom has these Nordie’s exclusive beauty goodies. My favorite NARS make-up artist called me weeks ago to let me know about the launchings. When I arrived to Nordstrom, I made my rounds but didn’t find anything that caught my eye. Until I saw the Lippman trio.

This post will be pic heavy because these polishes seriously deserve an extensive photoshoot!

Funky Chunky

This polish is described as a “sequined sheer black”. And can I be honest? It was quite the disappointment. I wish I could have swapped it out for something else. It is black with little tiny sequins throughout the polish. The idea sounds good but when applying–it’s just a hot mess. I remember reading Scrangie’s review of this polish and she said that it just looks like you sloppily applied the polish. I agree! The sequins go allll over the place when you apply more than one coat. It just…didn’t work out well.

And as I remove the polish….LOOK! There are the sequins. *sucks teeth*

Ruby Red Slippers

Well hello hot mama!! Now we’re getting somewhere. This color is described as “Dorothy’s shimmering ruby”. Cute Lippman, but not exactly a color description. I thought China Glaze’s Ruby Pumps was a hot glittery red but this baby knocks her out of the water. Whoa!! It is essentially a black polish with red glitter and flecks. It took me three coats to achieve full coverage but it was well worth the effort.
Doesn’t it look like there is a ball of fire in the bottle?
Awesomeness right?
Superstar

Now for a polish that has made its way in my list of Top 10 Polishes of All Time with just one swatch. Holey moley!! This color is described as “show stopping copper flecked fudge”. This is glitter mania, kids. The BEST polish I have ever seen. Amazing. It is more glitter than polish. It’s like 90 parts glitter, 10 parts polish. It is incredible. It it really is the reason why I purchased the entire set. Talk about feeling like a Superstar! It only took two coats to achieve bottle color. It’s a disco ball on my nails and I LOVE it!

More shots of Superstar…
Overall: This is my first time trying Lippman polishes. My experience with them was just…okay. The brushes were a little to narrow for my liking. I am a fan of Zoya and OPI Pro brushes. Those brushes allow for you to apply one coat without going back in the bottle. I had to dip the Lippman brushes several times. As for each polish, the application for all of them was tricky. Which was expected. Fleckies (as I like to call them) and glitter polishes take a lot of work. My method is.
Apply 1st coat
Wait 2 minutes
Apply 2nd coat
Wait 2 minutes
(repeat as needed)
Removal of these polishes are also very challenging, especially Superstar. I had to use Pure Acetone for all three.
You can snag this limited edition here for $35. Quite steep, right? I initially impulsively purchased this set. Then I returned it. Then I found a Nordie’s gift card from the holidays and knew it was meant for me to have these babies!
Have you tried any of these polishes? A Lippman fan?

Your fellow nail polish junkie,

Mascara Review: Maybelline Great Lash BIG (vs. regular Great Lash)

I was originally going to review another mascara but with the high volume of requests for Maybelline’s Great Lash BIG I figured I BETTER review this baby here before y’all start e-hating me. HA! Not to mention newer mascaras override older ones. That’s just the rule of thumb for mascara reviewing, riiiiight? Hehe.
As most of you know, Great Lash has been out for quite some time. In fact, it has been rated the #1 mascara by a number of magazines. Do I think it’s #1?
No. It isn’t my favorite. Maybelline has “re-released” Great Lash and gave it a bigger wand. For the purpose of this, I will not only give an extensive review of Great Lash BIG but also compare it to the original.
Is it better?
Worse?
Still overrated?
Check the review….
Maybelline Great Lash BIG mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (around $4.99 ) Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:

The original Great Lash’s claim:

Great Lash BIG’s claim:

The truth:
I’ll let the pictures talk…..

What I loved about it: See below!

What I didn’t like: See below!

Overall: Okay first, let’s talk about outside packaging.

No changes here! Both the original and the Great Lash are the same in width and height. The only noticeable difference is, of course, the BIG on the new one. To better differentiate between the two mascaras (as if the wand doesn’t do that alone, ha!) I purchased Great Lash BIG in Very Black and Great Lash in Royal Blue.

Whoa! Huge difference, right? Great Lash’s wand always looked pretty “cheap” to me so it’s great to see it upgrade to a more modern and mainstream wand.

At the same time, however, you have to take into consideration that not all women like larger wands; especially ladies with smaller lids and lashes. Bigger wands are a mess for them. They also aren’t so friendly when trying to apply mascara in the corners of the eyes and on the bottom lashes. Let’s just say when attempting to do one of the two with Great Lash BIG, keep a Q-tip moistened with make-up remover nearby.

The new kid….

Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

The old lady….
Lashes without mascara
(did NOT curl lashes)

Lashes with 2 coats of Great Lash

Great Lash BIG on the left eye.
Great LASH on the right eye.
Crazy brows above both left and right eyes. LOL!

Um, I’m not that impressed with either. As you can see the original really looks a hot blue mess. I was better off not wearing any mascara at all. I should also mention that it made my lashes insanely hard. Which of course led to flaking.
Thumbs down to Great Lash—I need to amend my previous review of that mascara.
Now for Great Lash BIG.
In comparison to the original Great Lash, it indeed beats its predecessor. The volume isn’t bad at all, is it? I found Great Lash BIG difficult to use. The wand makes for difficult separation. I struggled somethin’ serious. I also found that when pulling the mascara out of the tube–I got very little mascara! I have to dip the wand in tube a good 5 times to get my lashes coated for just one coat. The formula isn’t the best. It seems very weak. Which, I suppose would work for ladies who don’t want coated lashes. After all, the packaging does say that the mascara is “buildable”. I get that but my goodnessss…..
This mascara also burns my eyes; a rarity for someone who reviews a different mascara every week! I actually had to stop using it because of the irritation. This, however, did not affect my overall opinion about the mascara. I doubt that the #1 mascara gives the average user burning eyes–otherwise it wouldn’t be #1, right? Maybe my eyes were just goin’ through some thangs.
Having played around with so many mascaras, I guess I don’t understand the hype that is Great Lash. BIG hasn’t changed my opinion either. I can name a dozen other mascaras, drugstore and higher end, that can knock these kids out of the water. I do think they are both overrated. This mascara is average. Certainly not the worst but nowhere near the best.
Clumps of Mascara YouTube subscribers think so too. You should see the comments I’m getting on this mascara. People seem to HATE Great Lash immensely.

Would I recommend it?: Nope. It’s cheap enough to try out if you’re bored but chances are you’ve tried something better.

I also tweeted “Do you like Maybelline Great Lash mascara” on Twitter and check out the responses:
@MitzyG Maybelline Great Lash. Don’t hate but terribly over-rated. Better than nothing, but barely.
@NaturallyAlise I like it, but I have found so many other Maybelline mascaras that are better (read: Stiletto).
@AmyPredsfan I wish I can give you my honest opinion on it but a couple of times I tried it, it made my eyelids swell up.
@Fashionista_911 I think of this as a starter mascara. It’s cheap but it also gets the job done. I love it.
@Chugamagoozers Hate it! With a passion!
@CanadianBeauty just mehhh. Good for makeup artists who go through a lot of mascara and use their own wands but not for everyone else.
@MsTrecie I think it is a classic staple in the makeup world, but with the revolution of mascara I secretly think it is overrated.
@TriedAndTruth hated it! LOL. I think lash stylist is WAY better.

What do YOU think? A fan of Great Lash? Interested in trying Great Lash BIG? Think it’s overrated? Tell me!

A crazed mascara reviewer,

Sista Show-Off: DailyWorth.com

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com
Stop where you are!!
Put down the lipgloss.
Do you REALLY a 18th bottle of lotion? I mean sure it smells good and it is on sale, but do you need it?
This 18-second video is SO dead on.

You know it’s true. At 24, I am discovering that my spending habits now will affect my financial future. I am cognizant and love the daily “nudge” I get from DailyWorth.com.

About Daily Worth:
“Dailyworth.com is a free daily financial newsletter written by and for women. Did you know that women are chronically under-earning and under-saving? Women are often willing to work for 1/3 the price that their male competitors charge – and to add to that, most of the financial resources on the web don’t speak the language that we can understand.

Dailyworth.com was created specifically to give women the tools to help them earn what they’re worth and generate their own wealth through savings.
Our newsletter has taken out the boring numbers talk from finance and made it fun and easy to understand. The emails are short, punchy and directly to the point.”
Now that’s my kind of newsletter! And the emails are colorful and witty. See!

So while some of the emails are little motivators, others are real life tips that we can apply to our financial lives.

Hop to it, sisters! Debt isn’t a good look on anyone and saving is really what’s hot.
Let me know what you think!

FOTD Friday: Bloggin’ Beauts event edition

It’s another Friiiiiday! Dang, already? I’m never the one to complain about the end of a work week but my goodness…..sometimes they come a little TOO quickly if you ask moi.
Okay, soooo…I wanted to make the Bloggin’ Beauts the star of this FOTD Friday. Last weekend I partied with some of NYC’s finest.
And I don’t mean celebs, I mean bloggers! I have gained quite a bit in my 2 years of blogging at Clumps of Mascara. Aside from connecting with all of y’all, I also get the chance to hob nob with fellow beauty bloggers. It really does my heart joy. Follow my POTD (place of the day) back to NYC and at the Beauty Beauts event!
Yesss, I’m back. I am a small city girl by nature but I ALWAYS feel at home in the Big Apple.
I didn’t have any concrete plans so I pretty much roamed the city most of Friday and Saturday. I I found myself in a Chanel boutique and while the purses and shoes made me want to swoon, I ran to the cosmetics area where I knew my $20 could get me “something”.
But I didn’t haul anything. Chanel Cosmetics are gorgeous but a little too rich for my blood. I’m just sayin’….
I give my little sister my Blackberry for a quick second and before I know it she’s taking photos like a true beauty blogger.
If she started swatching, I would have died. LOL!
I did some more roaming around and managed to catch some AWESOME shots of the city. Especially this one.
Fellow beauty blogger and NYC BFF, Adina.
And these photos were all taken by my Blackberry, so……wow!
Managed to see another Broadway play.
WICKED is soooo a must see.
Saturday was the day of the party and you know it’s serious when you see cosmetics on plates. Oh yes, we take beauty seriously around here.

The purpose of Bloggin’ Beauts was to not only network with other beauty bloggers but to also play around with make-up and introduce new brands.
A presentation on Arbonne…..
We were even pampered by Zoya celebrity make-up artist, Jackie. She is doing the nails of Mrs. Thevi Cosmetics herself!
A few of the ladies chit-chatting….
The ladies at the meet-up!

A ton of love to Yana for doing all of the things I couldn’t do to make this party a success. And I can’t forget all of our sponsors including Zoya, Purple Lab NYC, Orly, Solerra, Arbonne, 3 Custom Color, Tarte, Fingrs, My Pretty Pink Box, Thevi, Cerave, Korres, etc.

With transferring all of my photos from my PC to my new MacBook Pro (woo!) my pictures are currently inaccessible–hence why all of these photos came from my Blackberry. To view other lovely photos from our event, click HERE to visit the NYC Bloggin’ Beauts website.

Anyone thinking about coming to my neck of the woods for The Makeup Show Miami? I’ll show y’all how us Floridians party. LOL!

Have an awesome weekend,

Keeping It Caliente with Courtney: 2nd Tip

Hi guys! It’s B’s sister Courtney and I am continuing on with my summer series. Missed my first tip? You can find it here.

As most people know the economy is not doing so well. Saving money is a must for everyone. As a college student saving on the smallest things can make a HUGE difference.

Take your regular face cleanser for example…

I like to exfoliate my face at least 2-3 times a week to keep my skin nice and soft. Instead of spending money to buy a whole scrub, I just add a spoonful of sugar (Mary Poppins anyone, lol)

No…. really! Add a spoonful of sugar to your regular face wash…it will leave your skin feeling better than before.

If you want your face wash to be hard add more sugar, but if you want a nice scrub add just a little. Either way, it’s a nice cheap way to keep you saving money and looking great. And with those two things you can never lose~

Keep Your Summer Hot!

But Cool at the same time cause I know it’s burning up here in Tallahassee, Florida.

Until next time!
Courtney
