Beautiful Bee-ing Me: Ms. Shavonda!

Welcome to the inaugural post for the series I’ve been meaning to introduce for quite some time! Beautiful Bee-ing Me in the reader/fellow blogger photo showcase! It is in this series that you can show off your hair, fab new outfit or make-up look. Wanna show off your new hair cut? That lipstick you’ve been rocking for a month? Show off on Clumps!

“Briiit, what if someone laughs at me?”

Okay, who cares? Have yall seen MY looks….or mistakes? Don’t be shy. This series is about being able to connect with the Clumps of Mascara community and display your new findings in the beauty/fashion world. I welcome all submissions from all ladies (and you too fellas) of all backgrounds and ages! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I feel honored to even display Shavonda, a 26 year-old from Sacramento. She has recently BCed (big chopped–this means cutting off relaxed hair) and wanted to show her new look with the Clumps of Mascara family.

After seeing her beautiful hair, I just had to ask her a few questions.

1. When did you BC?
—> November 20, 2008.

2. What do you love most about being natural?
–> I love EVERYTHING about being natural. I love that I can wash my hair everyday. I love that I don’t have to run from the sheer thought of water anymore. I love that it takes me 5 mins to do my hair in the morning. I think the best thing about being natural is that everyday I fall in love with my hair over again. I love that my curls are uniquely mine. No one else has the same curls as me.

3. What are some of the challenges?
–> I don’t think that I have encountered any hair challenges yet only because I’ve recently BC’d. Right now I’m rockin the TWA and even when I think I may be having a bad hair day, you can’t tell because it come across as intentional. Although I will say that I am having kind of a hard time with the whole head scarf, wrap thing, I had never worn wraps or scarfs before I chopped so I have NO IDEA what I’m doing. Plus I have a little head so I don’t really know that they look right on me!

4. What are your favorite products?
I’m really into all natural products so there are the ones that I have discovered and are lovin right now. I co wash pretty much everyday with either Burts Bees More Moisture Raspberry and Brazil Nut Conditioner or Giovanni Deeper Moisture Conditioner. I tend grab the Giovanni more though. It’s amazing because it’s natural and organic which I love and it makes my hair feel so soft and nourished. I have been following a few blogs (including Clumps of Mascara) which have raved of Trader Joe’s conditioner so I actually went out and bought it last night!! I plan on testing it out today. After I wash it I pat dry and spritz with some homemade vegetable glycerin and water spritz. While my hair still damp I apply some of my homemade hair crack (as I call it) which consists of Pure Unrefined Shea Butter, Unrefined Coconut Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, and Jojoba Oil. My hair loves this stuff and it is the most amazing moiturizer ever.. I don’t comb or brush my hair so I finger style and Im out the door. **I usually dont shampoo at all but if I notice buildup I only use one of things. I’ll use either castille soap or I use Giovanni Deeper Moisture Shampoo. Both are Laurel Sulfate free. Ill be trying Trader Joes brand shampoo that goes along with their conditioner since its also Laurel Sulfate free.

5. What do you plan on doing next with the hair?
At this point I have no idea what I plan to do with my hair next!! I know I don’t plan to loc it, though. I love the look of natural hair wild and free so I do plan on doing alot of braid and twist outs. I’m just looking forward to getting to know my hair and its characteristics.

Going natural has sparked a serious transition within me. I’ve developed a major love affair with my hair. I love to wear makeup now and I accessorize like nobody’s business. The bigger the earrings the better!!

How beautiful is she?! She reminds me so much of myself when I did my first BC back in April of 2005. You can find more pictures of Shavonda at her Fotki album.

Okay, so who is going to be the next feature? Don’t make me call you out. :) Beautiful in your own skin and don’t mind letting the world know? Shoot me your shots at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Until next time….

Rock on with you bad self,

Mascara Monday: Max Factor 2000 Calorie

Happy Monday, beautiful people! Can you believe that Christmas is next week? Have you snagged your gifts yet? Not me! I have never been a good gift giver. Perhaps lack of funds? Who knows..

Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara

Price: 5 out of 5 (a little less than $7 from Ulta)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 1 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: ” Get a dramatic look with 2000 Calorie Mascara — it volumizes lashes up to 200%. Water resistant and smudge-proof hypoallergenic formula is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. With curved brush applicator.” (source)

The truth: Dramatic? Not so much!

What I loved about it:
It gave a little length to my lashes. But nothing that my current HG lengthening mascara can’t do.

What I didn’t like: The flipping wand was the worst thing I have ever seen Seriously..it was a clumpy mess and maybe it’s just be but I’m not a big fan of curved brushes. I don’t even see the point of them.

Overall: For starters, the picture I have listed is not the the EXACT same one as the one I purchased. In fact, after doing further research, I found that Max Factor has a number of 2000 Calorie mascara. The one I really wanted to try out was the 2000 Calorie Lash Extreme plumper. This mascara, I found to be just “okay”. I was actually a little disappointed. It wasn’t BAD, but I guess I didn’t understand what it was supposed to do. The volume was just so so. I didn’t experience and flaking throughout the day and the clump factor was down a bit. Definitely nothing to brag about.

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

Would I recommend it?: Not at all. I would hold out for the Lash Extreme plumper. Click the link below to visit the video review.

Have you tried any of the Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascaras? Tell me about it!

FOTD Friday: Purples & Pinks

Happy Friday, family!

I am literally bouncing off of the walls today because well…it’s the weekend! Tomorrow I get my locs installed by my wonderful and beautiful loctician. I am tracking the journey to locs at my hair blog: The Crowned Chronicles. The “crown” would be my hair. Yes, another blog..I know. What can I say? I love blogging! Of course I will do mini hair-updates here at Clumps of Mascara. Stay tuned!

So in make-up news…there have been soooo many holiday sales going on in the cosmetic world. But the BEST one I’ve stumbled across is Sephora’s spend $35 and get $15 code. Whaaaat!! That’s amazing! Take that little gift card that I had plus this deal and I was one happy lady. I roamed Sephora trying to decide between something from Philosophy and Tarte. And then I strolled past NARS again….NARS, how I love thee, let me count the ways. And then I saw that Make Up For Ever shadow that I have been crushing on forever. Introducing…

(left) NARS Caravaggio eyeshadow-$32
(right) Make Up For Ever #92 eyeshadow-$19

I doubt I would have ever purchased these shadows so freely at their regular prices. I mean, really…$19, MUFE? However….when I tell you that MUFE matte purple is the BEST color I have ever purchased….I ain’t lying! I mean…I have no words for this shadow. It is THAT amazing. I just…wow. NARS Carvaggio duo, I find has the perfect deep pink and medium purple. They work beautiful together and MUFE 92 only adds a bit of magic to the duo. I am loviiiin’ these purchases.

Check out the look:

[NOTE: The skin has been bare all week. Not even a dash of blush. I've been trying to keep as many products of it as possible to clear up the little break-out I have on my left cheek.]

EYES:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Make Up For Ever #92 eyeshadow
NARS Caravaggio eyeshadow
Clinique Almost Peach eyeshadow (highlight)
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On eye liner in Electric
Clinique Quickliner for Eyes in Navy
Rimmel ‘Glam Eyes mascara

FACE:
Not a thang, mon!

LIPS:
MAC Nightmoth lip liner
MAC Hot ‘N Saucy Tendertone

What do you think? I am finding these colors extremely wearable! It was a pleasure playing with MUFE shadows for the first time and if those babies weren’t so darn expensive, I would love to invest in more. And I will always have a weak spot for NARS. *sigh*

Do you have any favorite pinks and purples? Tell me!!

Don’t forget to stick your hand in the Honey Pot to snag $130 worth of products from Rx for Brown Skin! Hop to it! This would make a wonderful gift!

Have a wonderful weekend, family!

Stay beautiful,

Sista Show-Off: Latina Beauty Bloggers

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! Shoot me an email at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

I recently came across some dynamite Latina beauty blogs. I find this to be a rarity in the beauty blogosphere. My African American and Asian ladies are on lock when it comes to beauty blogging but finding a Hispanic beauty blogger is a little more difficult. Hey, chicas….where yall at?!

I am ecstatic to have come across two new ones!

Lali.Amora

Erica from Lali Amora is a MAC lipstick lovin’, Sinful Colors polish wearin’ chica like myself. She blogs about the higher end products, as well as the cheaper alternatives. Swatches? Reviews? You got it!

Cafe Beautique

Take a coffee lover with a passion for cosmetics and you have the beautiful Bella over at Cafe Beautique. She’s a baby blogger with only a few posts but I am already loving her reviews and representation of the Hispanic ladies. Pero no matter who you are, you will feel like a hermana vistando su pagina.

….and since I’m talkin’ about Latina beauty bloggers, I would be remiss if I didn’t show love to one of the best in the game:

Beauty Logic

Dominican Enigma is no stranger to beauty blogging. She’s just as obsessed with nail polishes as I am and is constantly droppin’ the reviews for body, hair and face. You go, DE!

Know of any more Latina beauty/fashion bloggers? Let me know.

Stay tuned for a post later today announcing the contest winner for the Karmin Titanium Hair iron and a new giveaway.

Stay beautiful,

Amor de Lacquer: Soft Cremes

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Lately I’ve been toning it down it down in the nail polish area. I had fun with my reds and dark purples but I’ve always felt that my nails just looked BETTER with a nice coat of regular ole’ off pink polish. I love using polishes that you would normally use with a french manicure over my entire nail. My nails look healthier, more professional and I feel like such a lady.

Check out one of my top 20 favorite polishes ever:

N.Y.C.’s Love Letters

Seriously…I will probably get married in this color. You won’t catch this Bridezilla at a nail salon a few days before her wedding. Oh noooo. Just grab me a bottle of this beautiful off pink creme and I will polish my own nails a few hours before the ceremony.

My only issue with Love Letters is that it doesn’t last for nothin’. The ONLY top coat that I have found that works well with Love Letters is Seche Vite. And if I don’t use that…the polish will literally be chipping after only a few hours.

I had to use 4 coats to get the look I was trying to achieve and in this photo I was rocking Love Letters for 2 days. I love love loooove you, Love Letters. For less than $2, you will always have a permanent spot in my nail polish collection. You can snag this polish and more from N.Y.C. Color Cosmetics at Target, Wal-Mart and drugstores. Okay, one more glaze at Love Letters. Doesn’t this polish make my nails look like they were done by a professional? Loves it!

…but wait—this color, I think, has a muted gray/tan color.

Check out Essie’s Great Expectations

I needed a good 4 coats for this one too but I just love it. So simple.

I’ve got enough crazy colors in my nail polish stash but soft cremes will always have a special place in my heart. Do you have any favorites? Tell me!!

Stay beautiful,
