Amor de Lacquer Debut!

Welcome to the inaugural post from the Amor de Lacquer series! Do yall like that name? It took me ages to come up with something witty, catchy and memorable. Please visit the poll on the left hand side to tell me what you think about this series. I’d greatly appreciate it!

Amor de Lacquer will discuss any and everything under the nail umbrella…and let me tell you, that encompasses a lot. We can talk about upcoming collections, general nail care, what not to wear (neon green polish at an interview? Uhhh…) and even nail news. Like…..fish pedicures and men rockin’ nail polish. Yes, despite what you may think or have heard, nail polish is HUGE. And I’ve got a list of bloggers around the world who would co-sign to that statement.

“But B….I don’t even wear nail polish.”

“I’m a chronic nail biter.”

“Colorful tips and designs are so 8th grade.”

Yeah…I’ve heard it all. No matter your position on nail polish/care, I think you will find some interest in this series and enourage you to send me an email any time you have an idea or suggestion.

So what do you think?

An excited new venture for Clumps of Mascara?
A waste of time?
Don’t care either way?

An Amor de Lacquer post will never be complete without a NOTD (nail of the day). Check out a sloppy application of Zoya’s Kalista from their winter Flourish collection.

Zoya describes this color as “Metallic mahogany brown with gilded sparkle highlights” (source). I would say that’s a pretty accurate description. I only needed two coats and topped it off with Poshe fast drying nail polish.

I used Konad m36 plate for the ring fingers.

You can cop Zoya’s Kalista for $6 at zoya.com. Yes, they are only sold online. And don’t get to gripping. The customer service and shipping is amazingly FAST! And this is coming from a chick who hates ordering online.

Stay tuned….and stay beautiful!

FOTD Friday: Clinique’s Holiday GWP

I’ve always been a Clinique skincare girl. But since getting into make-up (like a year ago, ha!) I never really looked twice at them for pretty lipsticks, eyeshadows and blushes. I managed to scoop up a few of their eye pencils and maybe even a gloss here or there but I never had any crazy indulgences. It wasn’t until I heard about Nordstrom’s Trina Turk gift with purchase that made me want to scratch that Clinique itch a little more. I literally fleewww to Nordie’s here in Orlando.

Spend $25 and look at all of the fabulousness you get:

Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser (1.7 oz.)
Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift Firming Cream (0.5 oz.)
Lash Doubling Mascara (0.14 oz.)
Long Last Lipstick in Blush Coral
Bamboo Pink glosswear
Color Surge eye shadow/duo
silver lipstick case

…..how I ended up with that extra lipstick, I don’t know. But you don’t hear me complaining!

What did I purchase to snag those goodies?

Quickliner for Eyes in Navy ($14.50)
Long Last glosswear in Mystic ($14.50)

The best lipgloss in the market, in my opinion? Clinique’s glosswear! Not lyin’. This is actually my third one and I LOVE the staying power of these babies here.

I know that many women of color may think that Clinique’s shadows and blushes are not brown girl friendly. I, too, thought the same thing for awhile so I thought I’d do a FOTD using all Clinique products to convince some of you, pretty people otherwise.

I decided to do a look using these shadows and blush.

I also used some of my other favorite Clinique products:

EYES:

Colour Surge eye shadow (lid)
Almost Peach eye shadow (as a highlight. My FAVORITE highlight of all time!)
Bewitched eye shadow (to deepen crease)
Brush-On Cream liner in Black
Quick Liner pencil in Navy
Lash Doubling mascara (this is a niiiice mascara, I approve!)

LIPS:
Clinique Twilight Nude lipstick
Clinique Mystic long last glosswear

…I went a little heavy on the blush so that it would show up on the camera. I am loooving this smooth matte pink.

Serious

Silly

…I was trying to hide my bra strap from the camera but got it on the other side. I am a mess, people.

So that’s that….I found that Clinique’s shadows were extremely workable. Were they pigmented? Absolutely! Especially that frosty gold. I think it works well on the brown skin. What say you, beautiful people?

If there has ever been a time that you wanted to play around with Clinique’s…now is the time! Head on over to your nearest Nordstrom’s stat!

Have a beautiful weekend!

Brown and Blushin’ Series: N.Y.C. Chroma Face Glow

Lately I’ve been all over highlighters. For the longest I didn’t even know what a “highlighter” was. I would constantly annoy fellow beauty blogger/buddy Kia with the “What’s a highlighter again?” question.

I get it! Highlighters add a little “pop” to the cheeks. More specifically, N.Y.C. New York Color says that their Chroma Face glow is a “luxurious velvet-soft powder with a metallic finish that smoothes on to highlight cheeks, brows, chin and forehead”. This product comes from the Metro Metals collection. Ohhh, loves the name!

I have been finding myself rocking N.Y.C.’s Chroma Face glow in Sunset just about every day. I love how it gives me a touch of definition without adding a bunch of heavy make-up on my face. I can wear this over concealer for a flawless look! I don’t even feel like I have to wear blush! Which is shocking since I have this crazy love affair with blush. Look at the marbleized goodness…

Here I am wearing it as a highlighter…

And the best part?

It’s only $4.99. *does the bankhead bounce* Aww yeah….that’s ridiculously affordable! And I give the staying power a thumbs up too. N.Y.C. has been impressing me a lot lately. Have you tried this product? Interested in trying? I think you should….run to your local Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Target, Wal-Mart, CVS or Longs, like….now. I would say that this product is a fantastic dupe to MAC’s MSFs…..which will run you $25.

Stay beautiful, fam!

Mascara Monday: CoverGirl Exact Eyelights

Happy Monday, family!!

Ahhhh, the year is passing us by, uh? I could have sworn I was juuust making my way to Long Beach in California early February. But I’m not complaining because I am one of those annoyingly happy people during the holidays. I adore Christmas time and was ecstatic to hear Christmas music as I was strolling through Sephora on Saturday. It will only be a matter of time until I start getting my Christmas tree together. Yessss!

Okay–back to business. This was a reader requested mascara. I received several emails about this mascara waaay before I even saw it in stores. And then I saw the display featuring the omnipresent Rihanna. I swear that chick seems to be everywhere. Did this mascara live up claim of brightening the eyes? Hmmm….

CoverGirl Exact Eyelights

Price: 5 out of 5 ($6.00 from CVS)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 1 out of 5

What it claims: “The unique eye brightening formula combined with the patented No Clump brush technology brings out the color of your eyes and gives you gorgeous clump-free lashes.”

The truth: Wait, what? I’m looking for my eyes to be brighter? What the….is there a mini flashlight in the mascara tube or something? I don’t get it.

What I loved about it: Uh….I love how the tube is white and then fades out into a gray and then black. Seriously the only good thing about this mascara.

What I didn’t like: Gee, where to start…..okay, here’s the wand.

Not bad but not spectacular either. I didn’t like how the “hairs” of the wand weren’t elongated all the way out. You see how they start small and then get bigger? Well, what sense does that make, CoverGirl? How am I going to get the inner lashes? Yikes!

Overall: I don’t really know what CoverGirl’s motive was for this mascara. Some promise length. Others promise curl. And then some promise clump free separation, volume, long lasting wear, etc. But how many people have actually said, “Gosh, I wish my brown eyes looked brighter!” *looks around* One would assume that if for whatever you reason you wanted your eyes to appear “brighter” then you would perhaps play in around in eye make-up that compliments your eye color, right? CoverGirl has tried to be innovative and failed, in my opinion. This mascara does nothing. See for yourself…

Lashes with NO mascara

Lashes with TWO coats

The length isn’t bad but that’s not what I l’m looking for. Do my eyes appear brighter to you, folx? No. I was extremely frustrated with this claim not delivering. And while the mascara itself didn’t clump on me, I experienced terrible fall-out in my eyes. Each day that I wore it, I had eye irritation allll day. Not good. And then I figured out why. Look closely at this picture and enlarge if you have to.

The mascara apparently has little glitterly flecks that are supposed to “illuminate” your eyes. I get it! But nope, take it back to the chopping block, CoverGirl. These little flecks are irritaters (made that word up) that should not be in a product that goes so close to the eye. That’s a no-no. And I’m sure it would be far worse if I were a contact wearer. Not a good idea.

Would I recommend it: Absolutely not. I don’t think it’s very safe for the eye. I mean, at all…plus it doesn’t do anything. Definitely not a fan of this mascara.

*wipes brow* I’m trashing this baby here. So what do you think? Has anyone else tried this mascara? I hate to give such a not-good report but I must keep it real with yall. Still interested in testing out this mascara? What say you?

CoM TV featuring B…..haha, that rhymes!
*crickets* Oh….never mind

Have a wonderful Monday and Happy Veteran’s Day!

Sista Show Off: Nail Polish Blogs

It’s no surprise that I have a slight obsession with nail polish. I always manage to slide in a NOTD (nail of the day) or drop the skinny on nail polish collections that catch my eye. Perhaps nail polish and designs are more attractive to me because of the boredom I have been feeling with make-up collections lately. My “slight obsession” with polish is virtually a lifestyle for some ladies out in the blogosphere. Just when I thought that beauty bloggin’ was where it’s at I stumbled across some fantabulous nail polish blogs. “Oh! Em! Gee!” Check out my favorites!

Scrangie

I looove Scrangie’s blog. Just the other day I spent about an hour looking at her archived posts and kept “Ohh-ing” and “Ahh-ing” at everything. Scrangie keeps you up to date with all things nail-related. Designs, looks, newly released collections, colors, finishes, requests? The good ole’ Scrange has it all. Warning…spend more than 5 minutes on her site and you will be coveting quite a bit.

The Nailphile

Talk about crazy close-ups and beautiful nail beds. In my dreams, I would be able to sport nails this long. The Nailphile is one of my favorite nail blogs because I just love the intensity of the colors she swatches. Just beautiful!

The Polish Addict

More beautiful swatches and fabulous designs! Can’t get enough of this site. I blame her for cyber-making me order that bulk of Misa polishes. And she endorses Obama? Heyyyy!!!

I have these blogs and more in my Google Reader. I’ve been running into so many great nail blogs that I’ve created a blog roll over there to the left of my page.

Check out the looks I’ve been sporting lately…

NYC’s Moten Metal
DESIGN: O.P.I.’s Take Me to the Taj Mahal
and Sally Hansen’s Alchemy

O.P.I’s That’s Berry Daring some
DESIGN: random black and white polishes

O.P.I’s Take Me To the Taj Mahal

I’m finding myself incorporating some funky design to each look I do. While I am currently rocking the latter I can not WAIT until my order of Zoya polishes from the Flourish Winter 08 collection come in. Formaldehyde and DPB free polishes? Yea mon!

Polish pretty!

….and while I’ve officially endorsed Barack Obama a loooong time ago I can’t express to you, my blog family, how excited/nervous/scared/thrilled/proud I am about today. I doubt I will get a wink of sleep tonight. We are watching history and I’m glad to have been able to experience some of it through Clumps of Mascara. Thank you to my readers, fellow bloggers and all of those beauty companiesgetting folx to vote. This election has been more than politics for me. This is a dream that I hope will become reality tomorrow. Enough of the yadda yah! I’ve Ba’Racked the vote and leavin’ the rest up to God.

Mascara Monday: Givenchy Phenomen ‘Eyes mascara

Happy Monday, fam! I spent the weekend in Tallahassee visiting friends and family and having a good time for Florida A&M University’s Homecoming. My sister wanted me to incorporate her in this week’s Mascara Review soooo…..I did. Check out what we thought about….

Givenchy Phenomen ‘Eyes
mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($27..can’t even lie. This is TOO much money for a mascara)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5
Overall: 4 out of 5

What it claims: Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara perfectly curls and separates lashes. It has a high-tech, patented round sphere at the tip of the precision wand that reaches every lash and adapts to all eye shapes. It’s a Sephora exclusive.” (source)

The truth: Wow, wow, and wow again! This claim is without a doubt…TRUE! Imagine that, kids!

What I loved about it: Well, the wand-ball thingie is amazing! Seriously. I didn’t want this mascara for awhile because I was hesitant about spending THIS much money on one. But, I got it as a gift and was doing cartwheels at first glance of the dagger-like wand.

What I didn’t like: The formula isn’t the BEST. Granted I was too obsessed with the wand to realize this for awhile but once after a week of testing this mascara, I just wasn’t impressed with its formula performance.

Overall: I gave this mascara 4 out of 5 stars for the wand alone! I can’t express to you how amazing it is! It would have given it a 5 if the mascara itself was hot stuff. But unfortunately, it wasn’t. It’s pretty smeary and has this gel-like consistency once applied on the lashes. It does an GREAT job at giving you volume but that volume seems to disappear throughout the day. The wand is successful at separating. I wish Max Factor Volume Couture mascara had a wand like this!! While I can appreciate its black intensity, I can’t get over how nasty looking it becomes if you were to gently rub your eyes. Yall know I love to play around and be dramatic but I promise you I did NOT purposely jack up Sister Clump’s eye on on this one. Check out Courtney’s lashes after she rubbed her eyes a good 10 minutes after I applied the mascara.

Yikes! Try again Givenchy….a huge thumbs up for the idea, but head back to the lab with the formula.

Would I recommend it: For fun, yes…but you can’t take it seriously.

FOTD Friday: BCA Tribute

Happy Friday, family! I guess it’s Halloween too, uh? I did my Halloween look last week but don’t have any plans for parties. I didn’t celebrate Halloween a lot growing up. Instead of trick-or-treating I went to “Autumn celebrations” at my church. We would bop for apples and play all kinds of games. I went trick-or-treating a few years but preferred the thrill of bucket loads of candies over the “dressing up” aspect.

Last year I went to Knotts Scary Farm in LA with one of my bestest, Steffie. We had a ball!

And then on the day of Halloween, my roomie Joy and I volunteered at a Health Clinic’s haunted house. Obviously we were too cute to be scary. Ha!

This year, I decided to forget the whole Halloween thing and do a tribute Breast Cancer Awareness month by posting random pink looks. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month was a special month because I enjoyed the collaboration with Total Beauty Total Cure.

Check out my pink-ed archives look. Should you have any questions about anything in particular, just let me know!

China Glaze Second Hand Silk

MAC Pink Mauved pigment

MAC Full Fuchsia Blush

China Glaze Shocking Pink

Never been a fan of the color pink but I can’t help but be all over it during the month of October. Farewell Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

And happy weekend to all!

Mascara Monday: L’Oreal Double Extend mascara

Happy Monday, fam! I hereby declare this week as “Week ‘O Reviews”! It’s been quite awhile since I’ve reviewed some products (the requested and the randomly snagged) so I have a lot in store for you beautiful people this week. But a Monday wouldn’t be a Monday without a Mascara Monday. This has been a crazy requested mascara. L’Oreal’s newest has been quite a buzz among cosmetic junkies. But is it worth it?

L’Oreal Double Extend mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 ($10.00, kinda pricey for drugstore)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 2 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims: “L’Oreal introduces New Double Extend Beauty Tubes Technology, a revolutionary lash extension effect mascara that provides up to 80% longer-looking, nourished lashes.”

The truth: Wowsers! It’s a Imju Fiberwig drugstore kinda mascara. Groovy!

What I loved about it: I did a ton of comparisons (in the video) between this mascara and Imju Fiberwig and one thing that I love BOTH about them is the way you wash it off. Simply wet your fingers, massage your lashes, and it’s off. Amazement, I tell ya!

What I didn’t like: I’m not a big fan of the wand. I really wish these mascaras with “fibers” had smaller wands. Granted it may make it a little messy but I feel like I could get better control if the wand was a little smaller….or no, wait—a 3D wand instead!

Overall: This mascara is seriously the cheaper version of Imju Fiberwig; except Fiberwig does not come with a primer. Oh yeah…and Fiberwig performs better. HA! What mascara hunters have to realize about about lengthening mascaras is….that’s really all they do. Lengthen. I have to keep reminding myself that because I’m a “volume, plush lashes” kinda gal. I would rather like my lashes to look full than be long. If you desire length, then I think you’ll like this. Although, I wasn’t a big fan of the primer. It didn’t really do much.

My lashes didn’t plump up any more than usual. Here’s step 2:

See, it’s just okay. I’m not crazy impressed with it. That side angle really makes me lashes look funky, uh? I should have tried the mascara without the primer to see how that worked. The good news is, I didn’t experience any smudging or flaking. Overall, I do give L’Oreal a thumbs up for coming out with a pretty cool mascara—it’s just wasn’t all that for moi.

Would I recommend it: If you’ve ever wanted to try Imju Fiberwig and didn’t want to spend $20+ on it, then I recommend this for you!
