Mascara Monday: Dior DiorShow Extase Mascara

Okay, I’ll be honest…I’ve never been an enormous fan of higher priced mascaras. Or higher priced cosmetics, for that matter. Sure I’ll spend my life savings on skin care products (I jest…kinda), but spending a ton of money on items that need to be thrown away, like mascaras, have never been my style.

Buuuut, I’d be a fool to not review them for y’all. And soooo, for my girls who love the super luxurious mascaras, this review is for you!

Dior DiorShow Extase mascara

Price: 1 out of 5 ($28 from Sephora)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
DiorShow Extase provides built-in treatment benefits and high-impact lashes in a single stroke! The spherical-shaped Black Pearl Pigments create a 3D volume effect and the exclusive Metamorphosis Powders expand in size by up to 50% after application. Also, SR38 Patented Ceramid brings additional care, reconstructing damaged lashes and promoting stronger and fuller lashes. (source)
The truth: I’m not a diggin’ it.
What I loved about it: The wand is pretty groovy. I wiped off all of the mascara to display it in all of its essence.

However even with those curvy grooves, it doesn’t enhance the mascara application in any way. It just looks cool.

What I didn’t like: It was super thick and didn’t give me enough volume..
Overall: Okay, let’s face it…I’m just not a fan of Dior mascaras. I’ve reviewed 3 of them and not one has left me mega impressed. Not even DiorShow. The formula for this kid was just TOO thick. Granted, I know that it is a volume mascara but I found it go on way too thick–even with just one coat. I mean, just look how thick it looks coming straight out of the tube.

Very unpleasant. It is also pretty smudge-y. Meaning if you drop a tear, splash some water near your eyes or sweat a bit, the mascara is coming right off. More so than other non-waterproof mascaras. I’d deal with the all of the flaws if the mascara gave me enough volume. But it doesn’t. Not at all.

Mascara from a distance

While it performs well up close, it looks average from a distance. And for $28, I need more than average, son! And also tends to loose its lifting power after an hour or so. In fact, a friend of mine asked me if I was even wearing mascara on one of the days I wore Extase. Um…..#fail

I don’t know if it was me or the brush but man, I had such a hard time NOT getting it all over my lids.

Would I recommend it?: It isn’t the best for me but I could see this being a rockin’ mascara for ladies who already have thick and lush lashes.
Have y’all tried Dior’s Extase? What did you think?

Welcome to another post from the Sista Show Off series! In this series I like to show some love to other companies, blogs, businesses, organizations or just regular ladies like myself who are paving the way for women everywhere! Let me feature you! I love showing off the baby bloggers. Once upon a time Clumps of Mascara was a baby blog. I averaged a good ten readers my first YEAR. And it never seemed to bother me. A true blogger blogs because she has a voice and a passion…not because she needs a gajillion readers.

But a few readers loving your posts doesn’t hurt either. Which is why I wanted to feature baby blogger Amanda from Tatted Sparkles.

What she says about herself:

I’m just a frugal wifey and mommy who loves ALL beauty products, MOST tattoos and YUMMY cooking =) However I have a whole lot more to explore and talk about. I’m a recent college grad trying to find a career in this tough economy, a young God fearin’ mommy of an (EKKK) almost 3 year old, makeup & food fanatic, and so much more. I have a voice and I want my voice heard, its as simple as that. I was inspired to start my blog to reach people…the chunky girl with self esteem issues, the married woman who just had a miscarriage, the guy who grew up with messed up parents…just to let them know they’re not alone. Yet also to show people my personality and insight. And to get advice and views from others as well.

Did someone say tattoos? Y’all know I love ‘em! Show Amanda some love and tell her B sent you!

Sista Show-Off: UK beauy blogger Wande

After the U.S. and Canada, my UK readers show Clumps of Mascara A LOT of love. Twitter has been introducing me to so many wonderful fellow beauty bloggers in U.K. Add the gorgeous Wande to that list.

Hit the jump to see what Wande has to say about her online home.
Wande’s World is a tongue and cheek beauty and lifestyle blog which features cosmetic reviews from indie, drugstore and luxury brands; makeup looks and tips; along with regular competitions and freebies; plus your weekly dose of fun, confidence and relationship to build your self-esteem! A sucker for gadgets she likes to think of herself as being techno-savvy. She is a social networking freak married to her Blackberry and Twitter. Candid with no tolerance for time wasters, working her beauty both inside and out, Wande is your big sister, who will break it down for you with love and laughter.

I started my blog beauty because I found one problem was that there wasn’t a beauty blog for women of colour from the UK, not just dealing with beauty but other aspects of beauty eg embrasing your natural hair, discussing relationships problems, talking about other beauty related products such as whats the best epilator to use! In ddition I love my YouTube gurus but again I didn’t find someone that is women of colour, on the relatively darker side on youtube, so I hope to solve that problem with www.wandesworld.com.

Check out what Hillerie says inspired her to start a blog.
I always like to describe myself as a traditional-modern woman—you know the type who likes to try the latest recipe, decorate the house, and work the office all while making it look glamorous.

Since I was a little girl, I loved all things glamorous and beautiful. In my little-girl mind, Penny from Good Times was THE “it” girl. I remember at age seven or eight trying to get my hair to look just like Penny’s. You know that style with the little bump and the curls on the side. Chile please!

Sitting in the bathroom, watching my mother do her hair and makeup, was when I became mesmerized by styling. I would look at her and think, “I can’t wait to do that.” I was about five when I first wore makeup. I didn’t “wear” it really, my mother’s friend put a little blush and lipstick on me. I became a supermodel that day.

I grew up watching and helping my grandmother and great-grandmother plan events. Growing up in that type of environment, I learned the skills needed for entertaining and making great food.

I consider myself something of a Martha Stewart type who knows how to work it like Carrie Bradshaw. I love a great shoe with the same passion as a mouthwatering recipe, and do- it-yourself project, so I wrote a blog about it. I hope you love it.

She is as lovely as she is talented. When you visit Hillerie Camille, tell her B from Clumps sent you. :)

Mascara Monday: tarte multiplEYE natural lash waterproof mascara

Lately I’ve been getting a TON of requests for green mascaras. And by green, I mean mascaras that don’t contain those yucky parabens and the like. I’ve got a nice little list of natural mascaras and here’s another kid to add to the bunch. If anyone knows how to make eco-friendly, green cosmetics, it’s tarte!

tarte multiplEYE natural lash
enhancing waterproof mascara

Price: 2 out of 5 ($24)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims:
“Our new multiplEYE™ natural lash enhancing waterproof mascara is perfect for those wanting to fortify lashes while increasing the appearance of lash length and growth. “ (source)

The truth: It does pretty good in the volumizing department.

What I loved about it: Totally love the following:

formulated without mineral oil & petrolatum
formulated without paraben
cruelty free
formulated without synthetic dye
formulated without synthetic fragrance
dermatologist tested
clinically tested
What I didn’t like: The wand isn’t the best thing kicking.

The mascara tends to gather at the tip of the wand and gets all gunky. And the bristles aren’t as stiff as I’d like them to be. That makes root to tip application challenging. And if you apply more than one coat, go ahead and prepare for the clumps.

Overall: This mascara is the first and final step of 3 products that promise stronger and longer lashes. Step 1 is the Natural Lash Enhancer ($65) and Step 2 is the MultiplEYE primer ($22). If you wanted the trio, you’re looking at paying over $100. I’ve seen lash growth serums that cost that alone so as far as pricing, I don’t think tarte is too far off. Keep in mind that a mascara like this is intended to be used with the other two products over time for maximum results. Due to my inability to review mascaras for months at a time, I’ve only been reviewing for under two weeks and did not notice a difference in my lashes’ length or condition. My review is based off of the mascara’s application, everyday wear and performance.

I’ll give it up to multiplEYE! It does darn good in the waterproofing department. Which, of course, makes it a perfect summer mascara. Especially for ladies who sweat on a dime; such as myself. Volumizing was good, but not incredible. I tried to push it to the limit and get two coats but this mascara seems to work best with only one coat. It doesn’t flake or smudge. If I wasn’t a regular mascara user, I’d be inclined to use use it overtime to see the results. But man…I’d love some extra length.

Would I recommend it?: Sure ’nuff!

Have you tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

FOTD Friday: Orange eyeshadow, baby!

With the anticipation of all of the hot looks that I am going to see at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami, I decided to pull out my Orange aqua cream (#10) from Make Up For Ever.

I copped this baby at The Makeup Show NYC and have yet to really play with it. Leave it to me to choose the funkiest shade from the aqua cream line-up. But orange lids is truly where it’s at!

This isn’t my first time rockin’ orange shadow. A few years ago I wore it for for Halloween. It was just “eh” then. But MUFE’s aqua creams to take it up a notch. Aqua creams really don’t budge. I mean, at all. I submerged my hand underwater AND rubbed and look…

Nothing. Still there! So I put a bit on the lid and topped it off with MAC’s Acid Orange pigment.

This was a work look so I didn’t want it to be TOO bright. I left the orange on the lid and filled in my space between lid and brow with a brown shadow from my Coastal Scents 88 shadow palette.

To tone down the orange a bit I added a black matte eye shadow in my outer-V.

I sweeped a white eye matte shadow under the brow and bam!

Who knew orange could be so wearable?

My hair has me feelin’ like such a lioness. Rawr!

But nothing beats a pair of over sized shades.

Woot! I hope you are off to a great weekend. Be sure to check out the Clumps Facebook page over the weekend for backstage looks at Fashion Week Swim. And of course I’ll be tweeting like a mad woman while my assistant Nikki New helps me juggle between video footage and photos. The Clumps Intern, BriAna is the one that usually helps me but she’s in New York City for a summer acting camp. She’s the most awesome 16-year old ever.

Have you rocked orange lids before? No, you say? Do it, do it, do it. Yes, I am peer pressuring you. :)

Have a great weekend!

FOTD Friday: My Summer 2010 Look

It’s hot, y’all. Like…REALLY hot. I’m from Florida and I still complain about the heat on a regular. I refuse to walk around with a face of make-up that will end up melting in 2.3 minutes. Not to mention my skin tends to do 10x better when I don’t put anything on it. For an everyday look I’ve been doing my basic facial sunscreen, liner, mascara and gloss. That’s it!

But every now and then a girl has to get jazzy. So I’ve found my no fuss, sweat-proof and simple summer look. And it’s starring one of the sexiest blushes EVER!

This highlighter came from MAC’s To The Beach collection and I’ll be honest…I really only purchased it for packaging sake. Which so isn’t like me but even I can fall victim to pretty packaging every now and then.
Okay, so don’t hate me but this look is uneventful. But it’s simple and when I’m rushing in the morning and it’s already 80 degrees at 8:00 a.m., that’s what a sista needs. But even this is a rarity. My skin tends to flare up something serious in the summer time. I get clusters of pimples all on my cheeks.

Well hello hyperpigmentation and sunburned skin! Less is more with my skin but when I do a little something more, here’s the route I take.

I prep my eyes with my old faithful L’Oreal HIP creamy shadow in Witty. I use it as a base AND an eye shadow. Then I whip out Lancome’s Vintage…

…and apply it right in the outer-V.

Then I sweep a white matte shadow from my Coastal Scents 88 eye shadow palette under the brow.

I grab Eyeko’s Grafitti pen in Navy and Urban Decay’s Flipside to line my eyes. I top the eye look off with the ever so fabulous Maybelline The Falsies mascara.

After dapping just a bit of Iman’s Luxury Radiance Liquid Makeup on the cheeks, I take that On the Beach and sweep it from my temples down to my cheekbones.

 That’s some serious shimmer, baby!

Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am! That look takes no more than 4 minutes to do. But 5 if you’re jammin’ to an old Spice Girls song.

And then I apply the ever so wondeful NYX African Queen.

I LOVE this lip gloss. Get it in your life STAT!

And off I go! With a look like this I can only be going one place. Can you guess?

LOL! Me and my dramatics. This is what happens when you apply nail polish 2 minutes before you fall asleep. Talk about an epic fail! That’s Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear in Purple Potion.

B being B…

I just can’t seem to part with this Hello Kitty necklace turned rusty rearview mirror charm.

HK is my homie!

Have a fabulous weekend,
