Beauty and…Male: Men and pedicures?

I’m not sure how it happened.
It caught me by surprise.
The feeling was so nice.
It about brought tears to my eyes.
Ok.  Now, let’s remove your mind from the gutter and follow me as we approach the final frontier for ‘Beauty and the Male’—the male pedicure.  The sad story is that men rarely pamper themselves.  Most of your husbands or boyfriends wouldn’t know the word “pamper” if it wasn’t on your baby’s diapers.  Now, I do consider myself a ‘metro” guy but this is just one thing I have never given on.  But thanks to some encouragement from good friends, I got over it and to my surprise—loved it.  So, how did they convince me? Here’s several ways to get your man to the salon with you for a pedicure:

1)      Start with telling him how awesome his looks already are.  Many guys just need that extra push and there is nothing that beats hearing that from your woman.  Once you gush a bit about how fine and sexy he is….
2)      Offer to go with him and treat the two of you.  Many men think this costs a bunch of money but you can take that argument out of it by offering to P-A-Y.  Most gentlemen are used to paying so its nice to be treated some of the time!  Now that he is considering it…
3)      Find a place that won’t intimidate him and make the appointment.  If there are flowers and pastels on the wall, keep looking.  Any place where he might be seen by his boys or coworkers is out of the question.  Search your city for places that have a more masculine feel to them.  Now, after you have the place selected….
4)      Choose a time when there will not be a lot of folks there.  You can even earn bonus points if you can manage to ask the salon to schedule you both when another guy already has an appointment.  Private booths can help ease this anxiety too since he won’t want everyone staring.  The icing on the cake is….
5)      After the service is done, you must tell him how great his feet now look and feel.  Offer to take him with you four times a year (at the beginning of each season).  Encouragement is just part of the ego thing.  Accept it; deal with it;  and use it to what will ultimately be your advantage—after all, those feet will be rubbing against your feet tonight!

Yes, its hard to be a man
‘Cause pampering can be a sin
But once you get that pedicure
You’ll be headed back again.
Until next time, Clumpers….

Beautiful Bee-ing Me: Amy goes to the Zulu Ball

Beautiful Bee-ing Me in the reader/fellow blogger photo showcase! It is in this series that you can show off your hair, fab new outfit or make-up look. Wanna show off your new hair cut? That lipstick you’ve been rocking for a month? Show off on Clumps!

There is something special about New Orleans. There is NO place like it. From the food to Bourbon Street and the residents’ strength despite adversity, I can’t help but love loooove NOLA. Will definitely be planning another trip (Essence festival anyone?) there soon.

Last week I got an email from my totally awesome and beautiful friend Amy. She was prepping up to go to the Zulu ball and wanted to get some ideas on how she should wear her make-up. She told me that was would be wearing an olive dress. And so combined with a few of my ideas, her skills and stunning features, here’s what she came up with!

Hit the jump to see the rest of her look!

How gorgeous is she? I love how the subtle green eyeshadow makes her eyes pop but don’t take away from the dress. A light blush application brings out her cheekbones and freckles and I could not have chosen a better lipstick and gloss. That’s Revlon’s Airy Fairy lipstick paired with E.L.F’s Airy lip gloss.
And hmm, is it just me but….
Both Princess Tiana and Amy are in New Orleans. And both went to a ball wearing green. How cool!
Amy, please tell me you noticed that too or else I am going to feel like an oversized kid. HA!

FOTD Friday: Matte pink on the lids and eggs!

Happy Friday!

I really wanted to do a  light pink eye look but uh…that so didn’t happen. Sketch eyeshadow apparently becomes purple when blended with pink. No me gusta. I need some make-up inspiration because lately I’ve been cranking out the same boring looks. And I’m making silly mistakes with simple techniques. Like…how BAD is that liner application.

Wowzers. I think I need to work on my skiils.

What I used…

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty (lid)
Light pink shadow from Coastal Scents palette (lid)

MAC Sketch (crease and outer-V)

NARS Edie eyeshadow (between crease and brow)
NARS Albatross highlighter
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner in Black
L’Oreal Voluminous

MAC Lipliner in Vino
NYC Cosmetics lipstick in Garnet

Random: Every day I make the same critical decision. One that will determine how the entire day will go. Will I wear the purple frames?

Or the aqua frames?

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. But I always have to eat it on the go.

Two over easy eggs on whole wheat bread. Who likes eggs? If they didn’t have that cholesterol issue I would eat them every day!

Me and my Inspector Gadget trench coat.

Ah well, darlings. Off I go to find some inspiration. Maybe I need to spend more time playing in make-up. Most days I either don’t wear it or rush to do a look for a FOTD. HA!

Have a fabulous weekend,

Beauty Bee-haviors: Why we DON’T need make-up…

Welcome to another post from the Beauty Bee-haviors series. In this series we have open discussions about any and everything in the beauty world.

This edition of Beauty Bee-haviors was inspired by an 10 year old reader. That’s right…Clumps tries (operative world is “tries”, ha!) to be curse-free because I know that we have baby readers out there and I don’t want them to think cursing is cool.

Even though it was when I was 10 but I digress..

The young chick-a-dee was telling me how she just adores make-up and that without she doesn’t feel pretty. She said she’s tried 4 different brands of foundations and still hasn’t found the perfect primer. I didn’t know what primer was until I was like…23!  My attempts to tell her that make-up is SOOOO not needed at that age meant nothing because she was still desirous of a tips and tricks; not big sister-ly advice.

Oh well, my prepubescent pretty! You’re going to get more advice anyway because I’m a bossy big sister and that’s just how I roll. But now it’s you all’s turn. Help the baby Clumps readers understand

Why we don’t need make-up…

I think it is SO important to empower and motivate younger girls. They look up to us. Some read beauty blogs and look at magazines and assume that make-up is needed to feel beautiful. In fact, there are young adults and older women who feel this way.

Speak on it, y’all…

Mascara Monday: Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Good ole’ Maybelline has graced us with not one, not two but FOUR new mascaras under the XXL Pro by EyeStudio line. Now if you know anything about Maybelline mascaras, you may remember the original XXL mascaras. I’ve reviewed the Volume and Lengthening before. Don’t quote me on this, but I think that the XXL Pro will replace the XXL mascaras. Aside from the colors, the packaging doesn’t change so it makes me wonder if the formulations have.
Of course the only way to figure this out is by reviewing them.

First up…volume!!

Maybelline XXL Pro Volume

Hit the jump to see if it rocks or rolls…into the garbage can, that is. 😉

Price: 5 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall: 3.5 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: It’s aight…I don’t know about this microfiber thing. I didn’t experience any of that.

What I loved about it: Um, I couldn’t find anything to REALLY love about it.

What I didn’t like: I don’t feel like I got enough volume. Boo!

Overall: I always have high expectations for mascaras that claim to volumize. These mascaras excite me more than lengthening and curling mascaras. Volume=bigger and lusher lashes and that’s just so me! Maybelline XXL Pro Volume, like all of the XXL Pro mascaras, are dual ended.

You’ve got a primer on one end and the mascara on the other.

La Primer…

La Mascara…

I’m not the biggest fan of these wands. I mean…they aren’t bad but I wish they the bristles were a little further out. Now here’s the thing about the primer…although it goes on white, it disappears after applying the mascara.

I know, what you’re thinking, “What’s the point of this mascara? And does it really make a difference?” Truth is…it does! Watch this…

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

First the primer…

…and then viola!

Left eye: mascara WITH primer

Right eye: just mascara

Quite the difference, uh? So while it seems like an unnecessary step, the primer actually works. But I’m not all that impressed with the volume I got. Because I didn’t get much. Lengthening was good but come on…where’s the cream filling?
I also found this baby to be a tad bit flaky. Could it be because my lashes were coated too much? Maybe.
Ah well…I hope the other XXL Pro mascaras don’t let me down as much

Would I recommend it?: It’s not a must have. Snag it if it’s on sale.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

FOTD Friday: Coppering eyes and red like fiyah lips

Happy Friday, darlings! Gosh, I still can’t believe that it’s February already. I love the month of February. You’ve got Black History Month, Valentine’s Day and for us Floridians the weather starts hitting around the 80’s and 90’s and it’s practically summer time. Someone out there just shoveled snow this morning and is giving me “the look” but don’t hate me. Visit Florida! LOL!
Anywhoovers…so despite the fact that I’m Valentine-less this year (*pops collar* So, I still really like Valentine-y stuffs. I love the pink and red and it’s just so cheesy and over the top and right up my alley. My original FOTD was going to be something on the lines of…

Click the jump to see what the final look looked like!

But I’ve done that before. Remember when I used that NARS Caravaggio duo? Loved it! But for some reason I was feeling like sportin’ a red lip. But when doing so I wanted to do a pretty soft eye.

So I pulled out MAC’s Coppering eyeshadow. Man, I forgot how much I loved that color. It’s just so warm yet un-boring. See!
Go ‘head, Coppering! You rock and you know it. And then I had fun with a bright red lip.

What I used…

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty (lid)
MAC Coppering eyeshadow (outer-V)
MAC Embark and Handwritten (crease

NARS Edie eyeshadow (between crease and brow)
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero
Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner
L’Oreal Voluminous <—such a staple!

Milani Bonfire lip pencil
MAC Port Red lipstick
MAC 3D Lipglass in Wondershine <—throwback!

…and this one is for my girl Afrobella who LOVES bananas!

Actually, I’m kidding. She hates everything banana-related except banana bread and I love everything banana-related except banana bread. HA!

So what do you think? About bananas, I mean? Love ’em? Hate ’em?

I am going to have a pretty busy weekend. I am headed to Miami to crash a Superbowl celebrity styling lounge (no…seriously. I’ll tweet pics!) and then I am throwing my friend a baby shower in Tampa on Saturday. And let’s hope that I manage to finish up my 5K training for the week.

Okay, my loves….see y’all next week!

Have a fabulous weekend,

Mascara Monday: Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

So who remembers the original Lash Stiletto mascara? I do! I do! That’s because I loved it. I thought it was one of the greatest lengthening mascaras in 2009. A year later and now we have Lash Stiletto’s little sister….Lash Stiletto Voluptuous. Is it just as great? Or does it suck? Click the jump to get the stats!

Maybelline Lash Stiletto Voluptuous

Price: 3 out of 5
Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5
Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims:
Per the packaging…

The truth: Meh… I’m confused. What is it supposed to do?

What I loved about it: I got a good amount of length!

What I didn’t like: I didn’t get any volume and it was a little too clumpy for my liking.

Overall: Well, well well…where to start? First of all…I don’t even know what this mascara is supposed to do. The packaging was extremely vague. So I guess it’s going to give me “incredible length and volume”?? Gee…okay. I guess I’m so used to seeing mascaras with exaggerated claims that it seems strange to see one that doesn’t offer such. I assumed that with it being called “Voluptuous” that it was a volumizing mascara. It was expecting to see full and lush lashes. Negative.

Instead, what I got was length. Which wouldn’t have bothered me had the original Lash Stiletto NOT done that. Accompanying the length was clumps. Boo. Don’t let the website name full you. I’m not really a fan of clumps of mascara. LOL!

Now let’s talk about the wand….

It has what’s called the “plump and stretch brush”. It has a wav-y thing goin’ on and I’m not all that impressed by it really. It doesn’t make applying any easier. It most mimics the Lancome  Hypnose Drama wand but between you and me, I like Lancome’s better. The original Lash Stiletto wand was your average straight wand.

Despite the clumps, it was hard for me to give this mascara a really bad score. I did get A LOT of length. But I’m still disappointed because I wanted some volume. *pouts*

Lashes without mascara
(did not curl lashes)

Lashes with 3 coats of mascara

Would I recommend it?: I think you can pass. Unless you are really wanting to try out that the new plump and stretch brush. Other than that,  I don’t think it’s a must have.

Has anyone tried this mascara yet? Whatcha think?

FOTD Friday: Cat eyes and stained cheeks

Happy Friday, my darlings! Clumps 2010 is slowly showing its face so if you are liking the new changes (or not), let me know.

I’ve also been playing around with products that I’ve never used before. Watch this….

I did a simple neutral eye. I really really love L’OReal HIP’s paints, y’all. Perfect as bases and perfect as eye shadows too. I applied a bit on the lid, added a dark matte on the crease and swept some of the lovely NARS Albatross under the brow.

And then I pulled out a gadget that I’ve never used before. Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner. It looks like a felt tip pen, uh?

I didn’t know whether to draw on my mirror or on my my lids. Five minutes later….

Yes, it took me five minutes. HA! Have any of y’all used these? It was surprisingly precise. I love! Next up was Stila’s Yumberry Crush lip and cheek stain. This stuff seriously smells like red (not cherry, lol) Kool-Aid. I couldn’t figure out how to get it on the cheeks so I made up my own little method.

And I grabbed my favorite skunk brush from EcoTools and…

Final look….

MAC Studio Finish concealer in NW45
MAC Sweet As Cocoa blush
Stila’s Yumberry Crush lip and cheek stain

L’Oreal HIP cream paint in Witty

MAC Embark eye shadow (crease)
Albatross highlighter
MAC Blacktrack fluidline
Stila’s waterproof liquid eye liner
….and this black and silver mascara

MAC Lip liner in Vino
Tarte gloss. Loves this!

Blurry furry sparkle sparkle shine shine!

This is the “Yeah, okay Mom. Yes. No, but I will. Right. I know, I know. OK, love you too. Bye.” look.

….and why is my Christmas tree still up?

I know, right? HA!! Stay tuned for my reviews on all of those awesome Stila goodies.
