The LookBag’s Goodies: March 2012

Soooo, I got my second LookBag and I wanted to share with y’all some of the goodies this go ’round. I did a complete review of how The LookBag works a few weeks ago. For some reason, I didn’t get a little flyer giving me information of what each product is this time. The good news is, every brand that is thrown into The LookBag is also listed on the LookStore website. AND, you can purchase directly from the website too. Pretty cool, uh?

Let’s see what we got this month…

First up is a pair of Shadow Shields.

These are pretty good at catching the fall-out from eye shadow looks. I wouldn’t get much use out of these because I don’t do a ton of eye shadow looks but these are pretty nifty for makeup artists and those who do a ton of looks. The sample should give you an idea if you’d like to purchase more of these. A box of 30 on The LookBag site will run you $7.99 (normally $9.99). Not too steep.

Then there’s Damone Robert’s Brow Highlighter in Bling Bling.

Considering Damone handpicks a lot of these goodies, I was wondering when they were going to throw one of his products in. I was most excited to try this. This is a product that I’d actually use regularly and would consider purchasing if I liked it enough. Sample size is large enough and I’ll probably get a few months of regular use out of this one. It goes for $20 but member’s price is $16.00. That’s a lot of money for a brow highlighter but it’s the norm. And they last forever. Anastasia Beverly Hill’s brow highlighters are around the same price, if not more expensive. Those who know the value in quality brow highlighters don’t mind shelling out the money.

The Cailyn Gel Eyeliner set was probably the best value in this month’s subscription.

You get a nice amount of gel liner and a dual-pot of loose silver glitter and a mineral shadow. Per the instructions, you can mix the gel liner with the glitter and shadow to create different looks. Nice! Aaaand, the top of the gel liner has a built in brush. Would I use this? YES! I am a gel liner fanatic and I never need a reason to need glitter. Member’s price for this is $16.80 but it regularly retails for $21. So yes. This is definitely a deal.

Indie Lee’s Squalane Facial Oil came next…

Packaging gets an A+ for me because even if I don’t end up liking the product, I can reuse that bottle. Product-wise, this is an anti-aging oil that I probably won’t use because I don’t use anti-aging products. The sample size is enough to give you a feel for if you’d like it or not. I’ve never heard of this brand but the beauty blogger in me can appreciate coming across brands I’ve never heard of it. Member’s price for this is $21.60 while is regularly retails for $24. I can’t say if this is a good value or not because I dont know how large the full-sized bottle would be.

SHEATERRA ORGANICS Rose Hips Black Soap

I have to give it to the brands of The LookBag. Most of the skincare products come in such reallllly nice packagings. Lovin’ this one. And considering this is a preservative-free product, the chances of my using it and purchasing it if I liked it are high. And I LOVE black soap. I’m using a cleanser similar to this so I will definitely be giving this one a whirl. Member’s price is $14.40 from the regularly priced $18.00. Again – I wish the site listed the ounces the full-sized bottle comes in.

Aaanad, I saved the best for last. This Franchè lipgloss in Ice Crystal is amazing!

Inglot has a gloss that is similar to this and oh man….it blows me away. Sample size gave me enough to experiment with putting this gloss over different lipsticks to change their colors and dimensions. I had so much fun using this! However, the price is a little too steep for me in that I probably won’t be purchasing the full-sized because the member’s price is a whopping $28.80. Yeah, that’s a deal considering the regular price is $38 but sheesh….c’mon-that’s A LOT of money for a lipgloss. So yeah. This sample was just a big tease.

Overall: This month’s The LookBag was nice. I loved the inclusion of cosmetic products and I loved that most of the skincare products were paraben-free. Two months in and The LookBag is still impressing me. If you’re still not sure if beauty subscriptions are for you, give The LookBag at chance. If all else fails, you can cancel with no penalty and at the very lease, you’ll end up with SOMETHING that you can use from day-to-day.

Like that brow highlighter. Hollersssss!!!

My current facial cleanser. What are you washing your face with these days?

I’ve found a new face cleanser! This is a big deal, y’all. Despite being a beauty blogger, I am far from a product junkie. I stick with what works and while I may review a ton of skincare products, I usually stick with the same ones until they run out. What I review and don’t use, I often donate and pass over to those who I know who I know will use them. I just hate being wasteful, ya know?

A few weeks ago I was roaming through Chamberlin’s Natural Foods store here in Orlando and found myself venturing in the skincare lanes. I’m so ridic. I can MAKE my own skincare products but still feel the need to “buy” some. I’m no Mama Clumps. I don’t have the patience to make my own stuffs. And soooo I buy. This go ’round, I picked up a cleanser from a brand that I’ve never heard of.

Dr. Woods, uh? Is this Dr. Bronner’s cousin? Ha! I vigorously scanned the ingredients list and LOVED that there wasn’t any artificial fragrances in it. Too many times brands say a product is natural but then dump a ton of artificial fragrances in it. Which always annoys me.

This cleanser is so wonderful, y’all. So wonderful. I’ve found a keeper and don’t see myself venturing away from this one any time soon.

Pro’s

-Contains tea tree oil. My favorite all-natural pimple bustin’ agent.
-Includes peppermint oil and that makes the skin feel rejuvenated.
-A little goes a long way.
-Has a mint-y/tea tree oil smell to it. Which I really like but I can see how it may turn off others.
-Nice clear consistency. I prefer clear cleansers over creamy ones. Even though they may not be the best for my dry skin, I feel like they do a better job at drying out those pimples.
-Minimal ingredients!

Con’s

-Can dry the skin out. You have to apply moisturizer quickly!
-Pretty pricey in stores. I paid almost $12 for it but saw that you can get it online for as low as $4.69!

So yeah, I love everything about this cleanser. And I love that I can get it online for almost HALF of what I paid for it. Between this cleanser, my Weleda Almond moisturizer and Boscia masks, I have a nice line-up of preservative-free facial care products.

I love featuring ALL products here on Clumps but for every day use? I stick to all-natural, baby. With my acne flare-up’s, gentler is better, ya know?

What cleanser are your currently using these days?

MAKE UP FOR EVER’s HD foundation is amaziiiing!

I hear it alllllll the time. “B…you never review enough foundations.” I know. I know. But it’s only because I don’t really wear foundation. Dude, I live in Florida. That and the fact that I sweat like a beast. Wearing a full face of foundation everyday just doesn’t make sense to me. But every now and then I like to even out my skin and look all flawless and whatnot. When I have those moments, I play around with different foundations. Laura Mercier’s is still a holy grail as is MAKE UP FOR EVER’s HD foundation.

Sooooo can’t believe I am just now reviewing this. I’ve been loving this foundation for a while. In fact, it’s one of the few that I find not only matches my skin beautifully without much doctoring up, but it also looks good in photos. Lord knows ain’t nothin’ worse than seeing a picture of yourself where your face and neck and are TWO different colors.

Not a good look, y’all. Not a good look.

First of all, can I stop for a minute and give MAKE UP FOR EVER some major props for actually having a diverse selection of foundations? This very rarely happens. Most brands will a dozen shades of ivory, some neutrals and only 2-3 darker shades. But MUFE gets it.

Their 178 works very nicely for me. For reference, I am NW45.

Y’all know the deal with my bare skin. I suffer with acne, hyperpigmenation and ingrown hairs on my chin. Those ingrown hairs are the worst because the only way to get rid of them is by breaking the skin and removing the hair. Aaaand, of course I’m left with scars to deal with. Ugh. See all three here…

I conceal the hyperpigmentation daily with just a bit of concealer and a powder. I can proudly walk concealer-less but only because the acne scars are going away little by little.

Gracias a Dios! But even though I want to wear foundation for special occasions, I do NOT want to look like I’m wearing it. Ya know? I never wanted to be one of those gals that looks like she has on a ton of makeup. It’s tricky trying to achieve this because a lot of times, full-coverage foundations give you that “I’ve got on makeup.” look.

MUFE’s HD foundation is one of the few that allows me to feel confident. Watch this…

Not too bad, uh? The left side looks even but I don’t look like another person. Now on both sides…

Uh. Just ignore my horrid blending efforts around my mouth and chin. That’s another reason why I can’t wear foundation regularly. It just takes TOO much time to make sure every nook and cranny is in place, ya know?

Do I look too makeup-y? I don’t think so. Which is why I LOVE this foundation. Close up, though…I do realize that when I wear foundation, my pores look HUGE.

I kinda don’t care though. *shrugs* I mean…should I? 😉 So yeah. This foundation will always be with me. It’s $40 but considering I wear it once, twice and maaaaybe three times a month, it’ll be a while before I run out.

Of course you can get this from Sephora and Sephora.com. I totally recommend going IN to Sephora if you can, though. They’ll hook you up with a sample so you can try before you buy.

Considering this is one of the most popular foundations on the market, I know some of y’all have tried it. Whatcha think? Yay or nay to MAKE UP FOR EVER’s HD foundation?

Buttah-licious with Pooka Pure & Simple’s Whipped Cream

Da butters. Have y’all ever seen that video of the lady on YouTube who was upset at Black people  (she was kidding, of course) for hiding what she called “the butters”? It’s a hilarious video. One that had me rollin’ for weeks. In said video, she mentioned that she recently discovered shea butter and cocoa butter and she was blown away at their amazingness.

The truth is, I’ve been using “the butters” for a looooong time. Years. Decades. Pooka Pure & Simple has an amazing blend of whipped butters that I have been using daily. Daily, ya’ll.

There are so many benefits that come with using shea and cocoa butters. From completely moisturizing the skin to helping fade scars and dark spots, the butters rock. And I love that Pooka has included some of my favorite other ingredients…

Gotta love products that have minimal ingredients. All of which you can name. That rarely happens. But it’s the norm among the preservative-free goodness that is Pooka Pure & Simple. I am sensitive to fragrances and so I love that this doesn’t have a darn thing in it. There is a bit of a nutty smell but it’s faint and dissipates after the butter is rubbed all in. Speaking of the butter…

…in sinks right into the skin. And the best part? There isn’t an oily residue. I usually only use buttahs during the winter time but considering this doesn’t leave my skin feeling super oily, I can get down with using it daily. And yeah – I know it’s technically wintertime but I live in Florida. Ain’t no winter here.

This 6.5 oz tub of whipped goodness goes for $16. Steep but it’ll last you forever. Aaaand, there are scented versions of the whipped cream.

This is hands down one of my favorite Pooka products.

Whatcha think? A lover of buttahs, are you?

Milani’s Illuminating Powders are almost TOO pretty to use

Anyone ever watch the show Hoarders? Centered around people who “hoard” items, this show takes you on a journey inside the mayhem that these people live in. While shocking, it’s always sad because usually the hoarder had a breaking point in their lives that MADE them hold on to material things. Sometimes it’s the death of a loved one, feeling abandoned after their kids move away or divorce.

Anyway – I have a girlfriend who has me thisclose to calling Hoarders on her. She hasn’t had any recent traumatic events in her life but she hoards more makeup than anyone I know. She has a collection of more than 200 blushes that she doesn’t even use because she says they are “too pretty to touch”. That’s right. 200 perfect blushes that have never touched her cheeks. When I showed her these new Milani Illuminatizing Powders, she shrieked and told me she couldn’t wait to add these to her “Too Pretty To Touch” collection.

Crazy, right? Don’t worry. Said friend doesn’t mind that I put her story on blast. She assures me that there are probably hundreds of beauty hoarders out there. Eeek!

Beauty hoarder or not, if you’re a Milani fan, you’re going to love these. Milani is doin’ it BIG this season girlfriends and if you didn’t know, you better ask somebody. These Illuminating Face Powders are ah-mazing.

Gorgeous, right?

These babies can be used as a highlighter, bronzer or blush. Whatever fits your fancy.

First up is Amber Nectar…

Combining a gold finish with a touch of rose, Amber Nectar is the perfect combination of her other two siblings. She’s got a few micro-sparkles goin’ and while she may be a little too cool for my complexion but I’m sure other gals can rock Am Nec beautifully.

Beauty’s Touch is my favorite…

If you are taking baby steps into wearing blushes and want to wear something with a little color, this is the route to go. Beauty’s Touch’s golden notes are toned down a bit on the cheeks and what you’re left with is a shimmery pink finish.

Swatches….

(L-R) Amber Nectar, Beauty’s Touch, Hermosa Rose

And then there’s Hermosa Rose.

Despite the “rose” in the name, I think AR has more gold in it than anything else. In fact, it’s the closest powder to a true bronzer. That said, after Beauty’s Touch, it’s my favorite.

Pro’s:
-Beautiful and subtle shimmer.
-Perfect for blush beginners. It gives enough coverage without being too intimidating.
-A little goes a long way.
-The packaging. How beautiful are those flowers?
-Even with multiple uses, the flowers stick around. Yay!

Con’s:
-May be tricky to apply. Because it’s so sheer, you may actually have on more than you think. I found the best way to apply this was with a skunk/stipling brush.
-If you aren’t a fan of gold shimmers, you may not like these because all 3 of these are gold based.
-It isn’t very long-lasting. After about 5 hours, my cheeks weren’t as golden as they were when I first applied.

Hermosa Rose on my cheeks…

So yep, while these are subtle, I still love the glow that they give my cheekies. Some days I don’t feel like putting a ton of color on my cheeks, so these are absolutely fantastic. They are in drugstores now for about $8.99 and online for $9.49.

Whatcha think? Yay or nay?

Soft skin and lips with NIVEA’s newest.

Okay, quick crazy story about NIVEA. And I do mean quick. For the longest I would call Nivea (pronounced Niv-E-ya) Na-vay-ya. And I was so obsessed with how it sounded, that I promised myself that I would name my first child Nivea. Of course I made this declaration when I was like…14.

Wait – so I was the only teen who already had their babies’ names picked out? Come on, y’all. Confess it up. I knowwww I wasn’t the only one. 8) For the record, I have since dropped that name for a potential Clumps kid. I do have other names picked out though. Bahahaaa!

Anywhoovers, good ole’ NIVEA has some new goodies for us skincare lovers and I just had to share them with you.

I’ve got super sensitive skin and so I stick to using a strict regimen of preservative-free skincare products but every now and then I like to review the popular brands of the world. Let’s check out the babies of the bunch first.

These lippes are pretty, uh? NIVEA A Kiss of Vitamin Swirl is packed with antioxidant-rich fruit extracts. It has a subtle hint of color. So subtle that if your lips are pigmented you probably wouldn’t notice it. The blue one (Kiss of Mint & Minerals) has organic shea butter and jojoba butter in it. Since it’s “mint”, you’re going to get that tingly mint feeling that you either really love or really hate. I don’t mind it. Aside from tasting a little funny, I dug these lip balms. Vitamin Swirl had a faint fruity scent and smell and Kiss of Mint & Minerals is minty. They don’t last forever but while they are on the lips, they keep the lippies moisturized. These babies retail for $2.99.

Next up is NIVEA’s Touch of Renewal Lathering Body Scrub with HYRDRA IQ.

I formally made the switch to handmade bar soaps but every now and then I get the urge to use a bodywash. It’s an exfoliating body wash that has a thick lather. I love how it feels but the fragrance is pretty strong. Almost TOO strong. It has a nice and clean smell but it was overpowering and just a bit too much for moi.

Still, if you’re in the perfect for a luscious body wash that polishes the skin to a smooth finish, you’ll love this one. It goes for $5.99.

And theeeeen there’s NIVEA’s Extended Moisture Daily Lotion.

Okay remember – just because the packaging says the lotion will last for 48 hours doesn’t mean you HAVE to wear it for 48 hours. 😉 Even so, I love how this lotion feels. It isn’t greasy or watery like some drugstore lotions can be. It sinks into the skin nicely without a filmy finish and does a darn good job at bustin’ ash.

Plus, it doesn’t have a loud fragrance like its brother, the body wash. It goes for $7.99.

You can grab all of these goodies at CVS Pharmacy. CVS so rocks, yo. Have you tried anything from NIVEA lately?

NARS Makeup Removing Water + being nice to old ladies

My neighbors probably think I’m weird. I get in all kinds of positions to take shots of beauty products outside. I get into some kind of zone yo.

And I am rarely friendly when I’m in the “zone”. Which is sad because the older lady who lives across from me always manages to venture outside when I’ve got my derrière aimed at the sky to snap shots of beauty stuffs.

She’ll ask what a blog is. She questions why beauty products have gone up in price since 1962. And bless her heart, but when I’m racing against daylight, I have very little time to answer these questions.

But I chit chat with her anyway. Because one day I’ll be a 70-somethin’ year old lady and I’ll want people to entertain my questions too. And I think I read somewhere that for every second you spend being nice to the elderly, another year gets added to your life. Or something like that. Anyway – photographing this bottle of NARS Removing Water was fun! Who knew a bottle of what looks to be water could look so cool?

Have y’all seen this in Sephora yet? It launched last month and it has become a staple in my makeup removing routine. This fragrance-free and oil-free makeup remover also doubles as a toner. With cooling cucumber and refreshing chamomile, this remover does a darn good job at keeping the skin hydrated.

Oh. And it cleans thoroughly too. Sometimes using a face cleanser isn’t enough so it’s good to know I’m removing everythiiiiing.

Pro’s
-It’s fragrance-free. A total win for me.
-Great for those with drier skin. It is hydrating and feels super refreshing.
-Non-irrittating. Yay for those of us with acne!
-I like that there’s a little hole in the packaging. This helps with distribution. That way you won’t end up using TOO much.

Con’s
-A bit pricey at $28. The good news is it’ll last last for quite some time.
-Doesn’t remove eye makeup. This is best for cleaning the skin.

Do you need this? If you’re like me and find that your cleanser doesn’t do the best job at removing your concealer, foundation and blush, you’ll love this. Plus it’s NARS. Don’t they do everything beautifully?

Whatcha think? Gonna stick with your ole’ trusty makeup remover or would you give this a whirl?

One hot lookin’ jar of Vaseline

Darliiiiiings, are you having a wonderful Valentine’s Day? Please say yes. I get it. It’s a commercialized holiday that gets people to spend their money. Every day should Valentine’s Day. Yeah yeah, I get it. But come ooooon, what’s not to love about…love?

And speaking of love….

It’s a blinged out jar of Vaseline? How cute is this? Right?! Soooooo cute.

I’ve been using Vaseline since ‘back in the day, yo. Mama Clumps had us slathered in this stuff. And I still use it for my feet and lips. In fact, NOTHING can bust up ash like Vaseline can. It is the greatest. And call me nuts but me thinks every beauty product should be donned in Swarovski crystals. I’m just sayin’. Of course that would drive up the cost of beauty goodies. This tiny jar retails for $62. I know. I know.

Buuuuut, if you’re feeling lucky, head on over to Vaseline’s Facebook page and see if you can snag one of these jars in their giveaway. They are only giving 100 away today!

And if could care less about the blinged out jar, you can always grab a regular ole’ one for $1.99 from Target or Walmart.

Good luuuuuck!
