If you’ve been around the Clumps of Mascara scene for awhile, you’ve been there with me throughout my skin issues. From when I was living in Los Angeles and having crazy skin breakouts like here to when I even went as far as purchasing acne treatment kits like here. Truth is my skin is extremely important to me. Take away every beauty product that I own and I may weep. But curse me with acne prone skin for the rest of my life and I’m tip toe-ing to the edge of the “W” of the Hollywood sign.

I don’t spend a lot of time playing in eye shadows as much because my focus now (besides my obsession with blushes) is a good skin regime. has reallllly been helping me out. This website caters to those of African, Latino, Asian and Indian ancestry. It’s really all that I can ask for when it comes to skincare. I mean, who knows our skin better than we do? At the site, you will get an abundance of tips. It’s been my Saturday read for weeks to come now.

Dr. Susan Taylor has actually created a skincare line for US. I spotted some of the products in NYC’s Sephora in Time Square when I went visiting a few months ago. My sister copped a moisturizer from the Bright & Even line and has been raving about it. Dr. Taylor even has a book that covers all things skin, hair and nails for women of color.

What’s your take on Are you okay with the products you are currently using? More importantly, if you are a woman of color…..what’s the biggest concern/issue you’ve dealt with regarding skincare? Or maybe you feel as if skincare products cater to everyone. I want to hear it alllll.

Stay beautiful!

Adult Acne, get thee behind!

Hi beauts.

Can you believe I only took 2 pictures while in New York?

Beautiful, uh? I think I’ve been enough times to not have to play “tourist” anymore. I’ve also been tagged by some of my blog sistas and I’m still working on those. Yall know I looove doing them! So much fun!

Today’s post makes me sad but everything isn’t so beautiful in the world of beauty. Adult acne, being one of them. This is something that I have been struggling with for about a year and I am super close to seeking dermatological help. I’ve tried everything from fasting, to dis-use of products, keeping my hands away from my face, drinking a ton of water, natural/herbal treatments, vitamins and my oh my….the list goes on. So I’ve purchased my first Acne Treatment skincare products by Murad.

Have any of you heard about this line? I asked one of the lovely ladies at Sephora about this and she raved on and on about it so I decided to give it a try. But in order to see how well it will work, I have to show you the BEFORE pictures.

Now yall know I like to keep it real with my readers. I’ll show you a make-up less picture of me any day but I feel like I dead in these shots and with my face lookin’ like this, I’m just….a bit insecure. But Clumps of Mascara is all about mistakes and whatnot, so here goes!

I get pimples like this popping up on my face at least every other day.

And clusters of little bumps forming close to the hairline.

This is the worst….chin pimples! I finally got some of them to go away, but then they left ugly scars. Boo!

Daily pimples poppin’ up on my cheeks…and scars are left behind.

Okay this is a full “ain’t washed my face yet” picture. And excuse the Color Purple braids. My skin is relatively smooth and soft but a pimply horror!

My Mom says my face isn’t “that bad” but compared to how my skin used to look, it is. It is rather disheartening, actually. I am hopeful that these products will work. But if not, off to the derm, I go.

Any one else suffering from adult acne? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for me? Let a sista know. I’ll keep yall updated!!

Hotlanta’s Chills

Yaaaay, so I’m back from Atlanta and trying to update as much as I can ‘roun dis piece. I’m still getting around to someone of yall so if I’ve been ghost to your blog homes, don’t hate me! I try and be a dedicated blog sista but sometimes I get a bit behind. The pictures in this post are going to be smaller than usual b/c I don’t have time to upload them in my Photobucket.
Look at all the snow in ATL. I wasn’t THAT prepared but it was in all good.

Me and the baby sis had to pose fast on this one. Toooo cold!

I visited ThatMan, some cousins, my best friend (I’m a bridesmaid!) and then I showed some love by going to the Martin Luther King Memorial. It’s still such a big deal to me. I will never forget the contributions that my people have made to this corrupted place we call America. But I digress.
My skin is looking divine these days!!!! Seriously….no pimples or anything. My new focus is getting rid of those dark spots that the pimples left behind. Cocoa butter, my saint, is great for that. And I don’t wear foundation on most days. I’m dapping into Bare Minerals. I copped this from my Mom. Why this NC20-somethin’ woman needed this, I don’t know. The color is Warm.

It’s a bit OFF…I think it makes me a bit chalky so I’m thinking I need to mix it with something else. I don’t know.

And I think this picture shows how off the color is because I sprinkled some of the foundation on my chest just to test. Hehe, make-up porn!

I’m thinking of going to a counter this weekend. I love how it feels like nothing on my face. It’s amazing on days when I want just a little coverage. And when I want the grown woman look, I’m still bustin’ my Bobbi Brown Tinted moisturizer with the 187. It’s just divine!

Speaking of BB Tinted Moisturizer….here’s a better FOTD of it. I’m cheesin’ mad hard with my sister but I think it looks good.

Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer
NYC Translucent loose powder
NARS Crazed blush (this newbie sucks in blush application)

Bamboo Paint
Ochre Style e/s on lid
Sketch on crease
Handwritten to deepen crease
Vanilla pigment to highlight
Blacktrack Fluidline

Nightmoth lip pencil
Some sheer pink gloss from Victoria Secret

I’m still cleaning out the make-up stash so thanks for your inquiries. More things coming soon! I’ve got some eye shadows to go through, pigment samples, a Holiday lip palette, a brush roll, etc. I’ve got a ton of stuff I need to get rid of! Thanks to those who have already purchased from me. Business is great!

Peace aaaaaand……

A Big Post!

Christmas is over and I almost dropped a tear. I love this time of year and this was one of my favorite Christmases. I may have spent $70 on gifts for 6 family members. I didn’t go broke for the first time ever and I am extremely happy about that.

I haven’t really played much in my Christmas haul. Except messin‘ around with the Prep-N-Prime mascara. [NOTE: I have belongings in 3 different locations—my Mom’s house in North Florida, a storage room in Central Florida and a room in Los Angeles] I have to be careful because along the way, things get lost. So I can’t really enjoy my haul until my items are packed away and are sitting at a DEFINITE location. Have I mentioned that I’ve moved a total of 9 times since 2003? Yikes! That’s about 8 different beds. I stay moving.

Anywayyyy, I played with greens the other day.

I used:
Bamboom Paint
Vanilla pigment

I try and keep it really simple. I’m getting lazy in eye make-up. I never want to spend more than 10 minutes on it. And the fewer products I can use, the better. My lazy ass. So sad.

Here at Clumps I am always trying to share my learnings and attempted perfections with yall. My newest one is using MAC’s Fluidlines. I’ve been using the 266 brush forever. And I’ve always liked it. But the smoothness of my lines on my lower lash line have been somewhat jagged. So I did some experimenting.

266 vs 209 (SE)
The angled brush versus the fine point brush.
The 209 wins!! I get a much smoother line when I use this brush…it takes a bit longer to apply but it is easier to go over mistakes because of the brush’s fine point.

A vast improvement for me. So I’m thinkin‘ if you’re like me and are having madd issues with applying the Fluidline, check the brush that you are using. And keep practicinbecause this is one of those things that takes hella practice to get perfect.

And lastly I went to the Bobbi Brown counter to check out those pretty Shimmer Brick Compacts but ended up getting caught up in skincare products. Uh oh! My skin is just now returning from Pimple-Ville USA. I think it’s safe to say that it was MAC face products that turned my normally good skin south. Could’ve been the Prep-N-Prime or Green Cleanser or StudioFix or Mineralized Skinfinish. I don’t know but since I’ve discontined using them, my skin has improved. I’ll take pics to prove.

Anyway….after asking the arists about finding a light foundation coverage item, one of the ladies used their tinted moisturizer and eye concealer on me.

Def not feeling the under the eye action. Even though I look “brighter”. And why in the hell are my pores so large? But the coverage is nice and light and easy to put on. So I purchased it. I’ll do a review on that later as well.

I’ve said enough loves…off to Orlando/Tampa/Miami to visit friends/fam. So I won’t be updating too often. If I miss it, have a happy New Year’s!!!

Peace and Fafi!

Lippy Wippy!

I’m in Florida!! Back on the East Coast and I couldn’t be happier. It was worth the jet lagged red eye trip from Cali at 1am. That was a rough day but I am so happy to see familiar faces, places and MY CAR! I haven’t driven in 3 months. That’s just insane.

I actually have a TON of updates but I gotta do some backtracking, so first things first.

I hauled MAC’s clear brow gel and I love love love it. It really aids in smoothing out my naturally thick and curly brows. Since the waxing accident, they have grown in nicely. I don’t need to pencil in anything. My roomie helps with the arch so I’m estatic that SOMETHING is going right in the beauty department.

I also hauled more lip colors…..
MAC’s 3D and Viva Glam IV.

Here are some FOTDs…ignore the eye make-up. I was messin’ around in pigments.

[Viva Glam IV ]

I like them both. And I’m really liking my collection. I also copped a Milani color that I don’t have any pictures of. I’ll do some swatches of ALL of my newest lip colors just in case other brown ladies are lookin’ for something that works nicely for us.

And I will also post pictures of my skin later. It’s actually getting A LOT better. I have been walking around here without the face make-up and surprisingly, I’m fine. I don’t think I look THAT bad. Some of yall are saying my skin ain’t THAT bad and maybe you’re right….my dramatic self. Still. I would like to try another foundation just for kicks. But to not wear it is just…..amazing.

And I checked out The Originals collection (that one snuck up on me) today and only purchased 2 things. That’s coming in the next post. 5 days until Christmas and I have still puchased zero gifts. It feels great.

I’m rockin’ out on Jaheim’s newest album. For a sultry singer with REAL talent, check out his “The Makings of a Man” album. Simply fab. I shall return, lovelies!

Peace and sexy Black men.

Hi lovely people!

I’ve been able to update like crazy because my teaching/volunteering time is coming to a close end. I am excited! But not really because I have to study for a Teaching Certification exam AND the GRE to get into grad school. YIKES! Yall, pray for me. Seriously. Check out the beautiful floral picture I took yesterday.

Isn’t that gorgeous? I’m showing you this now because what is next to come may scare you. I’ve decided to show you close up pictures of my skin. Now I’m not going to sit here and dog MAC Cosmetics out and make it seem that they are the reason my face is this way. It could be a number of things:
-LA smog
-Leaving the world of vegetarianism (I’ll be back)
-Weather changes
….so I don’t know. MAC’s face products/foundations may not be the monster. But the best way to find out is not stop using them and see how things change. Which is hard because my face looks just awful…..check it out.

Now it gets worse…

Is this not AWFUL?! Now follow the journey of a newbie as she tries to get her pretty skin back. :( I’m so devastated.

But yesterday the school’s faculty went out to The Cheesecake Factory. I thought I would be out of place being that I was the youngest non-Californian Black woman there but we all had a good time. As cultured as I like to thing of myself as being, it’s always strange when I’m the only “Black woman” anywhere. But when I realized that my Mexican and Central American co-teachers are just as loco as me and my friends, I was feeling goooood. I did a holiday-ish look.

I used:

Olay Complete Moisturizer

Bamboo paint
Vanilla pigment
L’Oreal Volumious Carbon
Blitz & Glitz Fluidline
Revlon Colorstay eyeliner

Milani Brown liner
Fresh Brew lipstick
Bare Truth lip glass

….It was cute and festive. Pero, mi cara… spirits are really down because of my face. I think I may exchange my Chesnut lip pencil for a lipstick and then purchase one more. That sounds reasonable in price. And maybe I’ll feel a little bit better about myself.

Peace and Happy Weekend!

My internet access has been trippin’ for the past few days so I haven’t had the chance to do my beauty blog rounds or upate. Updates will be coming slower anyway since I’m heading home to Florida for the holidays. I’ll be hanging with my girls, fighting with the guy, loving my Mom and just realllly enjoying some familiarity.

I did another video. It’s a mess AGAIN. But that’s just me. HA! I’m doing a review of my most recent items…(check the pic below). I reviewed:

Olay’s Age Defying Eye gel
NYC’s Cherrywood lip gloss
MAC’s Prep-N-Prime
CoverGirl’s Last Blash.

I will probably type up an ACTUAL review later.

OH….and it’s official. I’m am discontining usage of all MAC face products; make-up wipes included. I’ll take some before pictures to see if it is in fact MAC products that got my face trippin’. And I will do some holistic/homeopathic remedies as well as detoxing and fasting. So hopefully by March 08, I’ll be back to my clear skin self without using foundations and powders.

Here’s the vid.

And I say, “Anyway…” waaaaaay too much. HA! Funny how you don’t notice annoying quirks about yourself until you SEE yourself.

Reviews, Session 1.

Peace y horchata. Me gustaaaaa.

Eyelashes and skin

Soooo, for once in my make-up life, I actually stuck went to the mall and swiped exactly what I said I was going to swipe. That’s the first. I tend to loose my damn mind in Sephora, but yesterday I only got the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. However….on my way out, I took a peek at fab NARS blushes and I’m not too big on Crazed.

A lot of ladies in the Beauty of Color forum on seem to think that
Crazed (NARS defines this color as a Raspberry red with shimmer) is just absolutely fab. A little too pigmented for my dark skin, I think. And far too pink.

However, I so fell in love with Outlaw (defined as rose with shimmer). I think that may be my next purchase. But really no purchasing of any more blushes until I learn how to correctly apply. Ohhh, I love NARS. Why oh why is that brand so f-ing expensive?

…..okay, I’ve gone on a tangent once again. I’m diggin’ the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. It’s still giving me a crimp and not a curl but not nearly as bad as the others ones do.

And I loooove my MAC green gel cleanser. It is really clearing up my skin something wonderful. And not too drying. I’m excited about that. Bad skin really depresses me.

I’ve also gotten Fix + coming to me in the mail via a Specktra sale. Can’t wait to play around with that!
