Skin Break-out Regimen

It’s that time again…..break-out season!

My skin and I have a love-hate relationship. Meaning I ALWAYS love it but it seems to hate me every now and then. For as long as I can remember I have always had break-outs. They are sporadic and usually….bad. I can go a few months without a breakout but when they come, they are AWFUL.

Lately I have been dealing with one of the worst. I’m talkin‘ oily T-zone and pimples galore on my cheeks and chin. Pimples alone are a hassle to deal with. If I’m not trying to prevent them, I am tackling them. If I’m not tackling them, I am dealing with the after effects…..those ugly dark post-pimple marks.

*sigh*

It’s a chore to say the least but if there is one thing I am dedicated to it is clear and healthy skin.

So what’s my break-out bustin‘ regimen? Glad you asked, kids!

First up is my beloved tea tree oil.

I can’t say enough about this essential oil. It truly is a pimple poppin‘ machine. A dab of this on my pimples at night and they are dried up by morn. No joke. It doesn’t smell pretty but this natural antiseptic will always be in my medicine cabinet. You can find out more about tea tree oil HERE.

[NOTE: Tea tree oil should NOT be used all over the face. A simple dab on a pimple should be enough. This is some powerful stuff, kids so if you do want to use it all over, use it with a carrier oil.]

So I’ve zapped the pimples but to keep my skin under control, I need a cleanser that gives me a squeaky clean. Ta da!

I absolutely ADORE Dr. Bonner’s Magic Soap in the liquid form. This castille soap in peppermint gives me a deep cleanse and the peppermint soothes my skin and gives me an extra tingle that I can feel in my pores. I also love that it is an all natural product that contains nothing but wonderful additivies. See….

Did I mention that I also use this AND tea tree oil for my hair? Multi-purpose all natural products? I love it!

So I’ve popped the pimples and am preventing future ones but how do I get rid of those nasty dark spots?

Clinique’s Even Better Skin Tone corrector ($39.50…read more about it HERE). I actually just started using this product. I am reviewing it for Clinique’s Insider Club and am excited to see the results. Of course I will update the Clumps of Mascara family but I am already impressed at how smooth it leaves my skin. Getting rid of those dark spots during and shortly after a break-out will always be a part of my skin regime.

These products combined will help get my skin back on track and I will be back to sporting concealer and blush in no time.

How do you combat the break-outs?

…and if you say you don’t have any—I don’t like you.

LOL, yall know I’m kidding. But really, is your skin usually on its best behavior or does it stay on the trips like mine?

Tell me!

Clear skin to all and to all a good day,

Come back later today to see the latest contest winner. It could be YOU!

Beauty Review: Dr. Susan Taylor Rx for Brown Skin’s Skin Brightener

[EDITOR’S NOTE]: I am in DC for this historical Presidential Inauguration.

I love when I can safely brag about MANY products from a particular skincare line. Oftentimes I may like the cleanser but not the moisturizer. Or the other way around. Truthfully, I don’t have many negatives about about any of the products I have tested from the Rx for Brown Skin line. Here’s another product that delivers!

Dr. Susan Taylor’s Naturally Flawless
Advanced Botanical Brightener

Hyperpigmentation, without a doubt is an issue that ALL women deal with but it seems to be more prevalent among women of color. I remember having an issue with hyperpigmentation at a very young age. It didn’t bother me too much until fairly recently and I am glad that I ran into this product at this point in my life.

Honestly….it either works or I’m seeing things. I would argue that it is the former simply because I KNOW my skin. I analyze it daily and know every spot, blemish and imperfection. So I KNOW that this product is working for me.

What it is “supposed” to do:

  • Gently brightens brown skin with natural ingredients
  • Helps to promote uniform skintone
  • Is Hydroquinone-free

(source)

You are supposed to apply a little in the a.m. and p.m. and then follow up with your regular moisturizer. I have been doing this for a little over 3 weeks and I have noticed a HUGE improvement of the dark spots on my face. They are slowly fading away. Might I add that these dark spots are fairly new. Not ones that I have had for years.

The brightener goes on like any moisturizer.

….a few swipes and it’s gone.

At $36.00 for a 1.5 oz, I can’t say that it is the cheapest little product but I’ve never been the one to NOT buy a skincare product because of its high price. Taking care of your skin is an investment so I’m not complaining!

What do you use to get rid of those dark spots? I’ve will always hail cocoa butter but this brightener is the truth! In 5 months, I’m thinking that ALL of the dark spots on my face will be gone. How great would that be?

Con Amor,

Beauty Review: Sea Breeze Fresh-Clean

‘ello family!!

Okay, so what’s the number one skin annoyance in your book? Is it scarring from previous pimples? What about hyper pigmentation? Your dessert dry skin? T-zone turmoil?

What say you? While you are thinking–let me tell you mine.

Breakouts!! And not just any kind of breakouts. The kind of breakouts that don’t even make sense.

For example..mira este foto:

This was when I was living in the City of Angels almost a year ago. My face went crazy! But it made sense. I was going through some changes.

-Different climate.
-Smog-alicious L.A.
-My diet changed (left the world of vegetarianism).
-I was teaching and around kids. Kids=germs.
-Stress. Post grad nerves, a big move, no money, wowsers!

So it almost makes sense as to why my face reacted the way it did. I can’t blame it.

Lately, however, I’ve been getting some mad crazy pimples on my left cheek and I can NOT understand where they are coming from.

“B, what are you doing differently?”

Nada! I’m serious. My diet/work-out regime in the same. I drink a ton of water. I take my multi-vitamins daily. I change my pillow cases. I change my wash clothes. I don’t touch my face with dirty hands nor do I press my face up against my cell phone. So what is it?

The world may never know. Add that mystery next to “Where is my left sock?” file.

But I have finally combated these massive thugged out pimples.

Good ole’ Sea Breeze Astringent . I grew up with this stuff in the house but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago until I became BFFs with it again. Don’t know what I was thinking! A cotton ball soaked with Sea Breeze every morning and night on my left cheek is doing the trick. When I tell you my pimples are gone…they are gone!

Drugstore.com says:

“Oil control formula that treats and prevents breakouts. “

Great stuff, sisters and brothers. Of course it comes in a Sensitive Skin formula. I meant to pick that up but I am glad that the original isn’t giving me any problems. You can buy it at all drug and grocery stores and online at Drugstore.com for only $4.99.

The pimples are gone. Next step: getting rid of scarring. *sigh* It never ends.

Have you used Sea Breeze before? A fan? Hate it? How do you get rid of breakouts or pimples?

I mean besides using toothpaste. And I know I’m not the only one who does that.

Pimple poppin’ (not with my fingers of course) and proud,

Beauty Review: Citrus & Spice All Natural Body Scrub

FACT: Your Head Newb here is a fan of bathing.

Granted I hope you ALL like to bathe but what I mean is I truly enjoy soaking in a hot bubble bath after a sweat fest at the gym or particularly stressful day. As a matter of fact, as I type this post on my lunch break I am already looking forward to a nice warm bubbly.

But what can take an all ready blissful experience to the next level? An exfoliant to scrub off of those dead skin cells to reveal beautifully smooth and luscious skin. And not just an kind of exfoilator. Many contain hash ingredients that do more bad than good to your skin. Some are too harsh while others aren’t grainy enough.

Face it, finding a great exfoilator isn’t all THAT easy.

Let me introduce to you:

INGREDIENTS Ultra-Moisturizing, All Natural body scrub by M.B. Carey & Co. Ltd.

Everybody say “Ohhh” and “Ahhhh”! The line-up is as follows.

Citrus & Spice, Lavender/Mint, Patchouli/Pine – MSRP: $40.00 – 19 oz. /538.5 gm. Tub

Citrus & Spice, Lavender/Mint, Patchouli/Pine – MSRP: $6.00 – 2.5 oz. /70.8 gm. Jar

I used the Citrus & Spice and wa-wa-wooow….I would have never thought of actually using cinnamon in a scrub but it works out beautifully. I used it in a bubble bath and wanted to just sleep in the tub for hours. It was wonderful!

Is it just me or does this look….edible? Yum!

The scrub consists of only a few products: coarse sea salt, mineral oil, petrolatum, cinnamon, clover and Sweet Orange essential oil. I’m finding that using SALT in an scrub as far better than sugar because not only dissolves but it isn’t sticky. See the dissolving action?

SCRUB ALONE

SCRUB with a bit of water

I was a little weary with the scrub containing mineral oil as mineral oil can be a property that clogs pores. However, Mommy the herbalist said that its use in small doses is not harmful. I found that I didn’t even need to apply lotion after using it so I definitely understand its purpose in the scrub!

Overall: A+ from B. You too should pamper yourself with this and other wonderful products from M.B. Carey & Co. Ltd. Visit their website at:

Brown Beauties and Sun Protection

This post may be little delayed being that summer is more than halfway over with but better late than never, right? I hope by now you all know the importance of taking care of our skin, but even more so during those hot summer months.

In Florida we have two types of seasons: hot and hotter. I don’t remember putting on a ton a sunscreen growing up as a child; probably because of the idea that “Black folx don’t need sun protection because we are already dark” myth. Oh yes, it sounds funny but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to the beach with my girlfriends and they’ve packed everything in their beach bags EXCEPT sunscreen.

So let’s make this clear:

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen

The sun does NOT discriminate so it is important that we all take care of our skin year round but especially when the sun is blazing.

Since becoming a beauty editor, I have become a bit more cognizant in sun protection on my face as well as my body. Para mi cara, I use the following:

Olay Complete SPF 15

This has been my HG moisturizer for some months now. I doubt I will ever switch to anything else. It is wonderfully moisturizing for my relatively dry skin and isn’t so thick to where I feel like it is clogging my pores. When I break a sweat from working out, it doesn’t leave any residue. For less than $10, I can’t ask for anything more in a moisturizer. I tend to use this every day and even at night sometimes.

Clinique Superdefense Action Moisturizer SPF

Now if I know I’m going to be outside more on a particular day I pull out the Superdefense. This moisturizer is a bit thick in consistency but it doesn’t feel “heavy” which I can appreciate. I LOVE it! It has that ‘sun block-y’ smell that I know I most of us can’t stand but it was perfect for jammin’ at Bayside in Miami this past weekend. The price is steep. For $39.50 you only get 1.7 oz little jar but can I tell you a secret? I’ve been using my sample jar for about 4 weeks now. Ha!

I’ve also been playing around with Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30 but I haven’t had the best results being that it gives me that ghostly look. The product says that it is translucent but I object being that it didn’t look too flattering my on brown brown skin. Which made me sad because the concept is ideal; especially with this “mineral make-up” obsession going on in the beauty world.

We’ve covered face, but let’s not forget the body, baby. I have three different levels of SPFs that I use throughout the summer.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula SPF 15 Body Lotion

I don’t know about yall, but my Momma has been using Palmer’s products for as long as I can remember. What I don’t remember is this particular body lotion. It smells divine! Like a cookie! Now granted, I’m not the type that likes to go around smelling like food. The smell is a bit overpowering for me but pleasant to say the least. I generally use when I’m getting ready for work in the morning and know I will be hittin’ the streets after work for a “every other day” jog. Tis cheap too and provides enough protection without that “smell”.

Peter Thomas Roth Continuous Sunscreen Mist SPF 30

I’m diggin’ this sunscreen each time I wear it. The fact that it is oil-free, water-resistant and has some Vitamin E up in it, well…I mean this is perfect for a quick “walking the outlet malls” hit. I know some people have complexes about aerosol cans and while I don’t use this as much as my other sunscreen products I find that it does the job for when I really don’t have time to lather lotion up and down my arms and legs.

Banana Boat UltraDefense Sunblock Lotion SPF 80

I died laughing when I first saw this product. SPF 80. “Isn’t that a bit extreme?” I thought to myself. But alas the tube of sun blockin’ lube (LOL, I’m a mess) ended up in my basket. I don’t even think about loungin’ by the pool or on a beach chair without this baby here. It provides the ultimate protection for my melanin enriched skin.

….and don’t forget those lippies. It’s a bit on the pricey side but I stand by my MAC Lip Conditioner SPF 15. It is the greatest!

So if you’ve read this far, I’m thinkin’ you deserve the chance to win a sweet treat. I have 3 Lip Butters from Palmers. These glosses come in Dark Chocolate & Cherry AND Dark Chocolate & Peppermint and they taste….I mean feel divine on the lips. First 4 folx to email me the correct answer to the following question WIN!

Where was I born?

…..hint: it’s in Florida and it is a relatively large city. You only get one guess so good luck! Remember to email me, do not leave comments. I will announce the winners on Friday, July 18 during the FOTD Friday post.

Good luck and keep blockin’!

….oh wait, I would love to know what you other brown folx are wearing. Am I the only one that once thought we didn’t have to wear sunscreen? Speak on it!

BrownSkin.net

If you’ve been around the Clumps of Mascara scene for awhile, you’ve been there with me throughout my skin issues. From when I was living in Los Angeles and having crazy skin breakouts like here to when I even went as far as purchasing acne treatment kits like here. Truth is my skin is extremely important to me. Take away every beauty product that I own and I may weep. But curse me with acne prone skin for the rest of my life and I’m tip toe-ing to the edge of the “W” of the Hollywood sign.

I don’t spend a lot of time playing in eye shadows as much because my focus now (besides my obsession with blushes) is a good skin regime. BrownSkin.net has reallllly been helping me out. This website caters to those of African, Latino, Asian and Indian ancestry. It’s really all that I can ask for when it comes to skincare. I mean, who knows our skin better than we do? At the site, you will get an abundance of tips. It’s been my Saturday read for weeks to come now.

Dr. Susan Taylor has actually created a skincare line for US. I spotted some of the products in NYC’s Sephora in Time Square when I went visiting a few months ago. My sister copped a moisturizer from the Bright & Even line and has been raving about it. Dr. Taylor even has a book that covers all things skin, hair and nails for women of color.

What’s your take on BrownSkin.net? Are you okay with the products you are currently using? More importantly, if you are a woman of color…..what’s the biggest concern/issue you’ve dealt with regarding skincare? Or maybe you feel as if skincare products cater to everyone. I want to hear it alllll.

Stay beautiful!

Adult Acne, get thee behind!

Hi beauts.

Can you believe I only took 2 pictures while in New York?

Beautiful, uh? I think I’ve been enough times to not have to play “tourist” anymore. I’ve also been tagged by some of my blog sistas and I’m still working on those. Yall know I looove doing them! So much fun!

Today’s post makes me sad but everything isn’t so beautiful in the world of beauty. Adult acne, being one of them. This is something that I have been struggling with for about a year and I am super close to seeking dermatological help. I’ve tried everything from fasting, to dis-use of products, keeping my hands away from my face, drinking a ton of water, natural/herbal treatments, vitamins and my oh my….the list goes on. So I’ve purchased my first Acne Treatment skincare products by Murad.

Have any of you heard about this line? I asked one of the lovely ladies at Sephora about this and she raved on and on about it so I decided to give it a try. But in order to see how well it will work, I have to show you the BEFORE pictures.

Now yall know I like to keep it real with my readers. I’ll show you a make-up less picture of me any day but I feel like I dead in these shots and with my face lookin’ like this, I’m just….a bit insecure. But Clumps of Mascara is all about mistakes and whatnot, so here goes!

I get pimples like this popping up on my face at least every other day.

And clusters of little bumps forming close to the hairline.

This is the worst….chin pimples! I finally got some of them to go away, but then they left ugly scars. Boo!

Daily pimples poppin’ up on my cheeks…and scars are left behind.

Okay this is a full “ain’t washed my face yet” picture. And excuse the Color Purple braids. My skin is relatively smooth and soft but a pimply horror!

My Mom says my face isn’t “that bad” but compared to how my skin used to look, it is. It is rather disheartening, actually. I am hopeful that these products will work. But if not, off to the derm, I go.

Any one else suffering from adult acne? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations for me? Let a sista know. I’ll keep yall updated!!

Hotlanta’s Chills

Yaaaay, so I’m back from Atlanta and trying to update as much as I can ‘roun dis piece. I’m still getting around to someone of yall so if I’ve been ghost to your blog homes, don’t hate me! I try and be a dedicated blog sista but sometimes I get a bit behind. The pictures in this post are going to be smaller than usual b/c I don’t have time to upload them in my Photobucket.
Look at all the snow in ATL. I wasn’t THAT prepared but it was in all good.

Me and the baby sis had to pose fast on this one. Toooo cold!

I visited ThatMan, some cousins, my best friend (I’m a bridesmaid!) and then I showed some love by going to the Martin Luther King Memorial. It’s still such a big deal to me. I will never forget the contributions that my people have made to this corrupted place we call America. But I digress.
My skin is looking divine these days!!!! Seriously….no pimples or anything. My new focus is getting rid of those dark spots that the pimples left behind. Cocoa butter, my saint, is great for that. And I don’t wear foundation on most days. I’m dapping into Bare Minerals. I copped this from my Mom. Why this NC20-somethin’ woman needed this, I don’t know. The color is Warm.

It’s a bit OFF…I think it makes me a bit chalky so I’m thinking I need to mix it with something else. I don’t know.

And I think this picture shows how off the color is because I sprinkled some of the foundation on my chest just to test. Hehe, make-up porn!

I’m thinking of going to a counter this weekend. I love how it feels like nothing on my face. It’s amazing on days when I want just a little coverage. And when I want the grown woman look, I’m still bustin’ my Bobbi Brown Tinted moisturizer with the 187. It’s just divine!

Speaking of BB Tinted Moisturizer….here’s a better FOTD of it. I’m cheesin’ mad hard with my sister but I think it looks good.

PRODUCTS USED:

FACE:
Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer
NYC Translucent loose powder
NARS Crazed blush (this newbie sucks in blush application)

EYES:
UDPP
Bamboo Paint
Ochre Style e/s on lid
Sketch on crease
Handwritten to deepen crease
Vanilla pigment to highlight
Blacktrack Fluidline

LIPS:
Nightmoth lip pencil
Some sheer pink gloss from Victoria Secret
Blacktrack

I’m still cleaning out the make-up stash so thanks for your inquiries. More things coming soon! I’ve got some eye shadows to go through, pigment samples, a Holiday lip palette, a brush roll, etc. I’ve got a ton of stuff I need to get rid of! Thanks to those who have already purchased from me. Business is great!

Peace aaaaaand……
