So. About Sunscreen…do you wear it?

I can’t believe that I am just now getting around to reviewing these sunscreens from Kiss My Face. Summer is well underway and we just took our first family trip to the beach a few weeks ago. I wasn’t brave enough to take an infant to the beach last year but now that Elle is 1.5, I just knew it would be some kind of fun.

Baby at the beach

And fun, it was. She had a blast digging through the sand with Daddy, running up on the waves and lounging with Mommy on the beach chair. We were sent these Kiss My Face sunscreens for review which we toted with us in our beach bags. I’m glad I remembered to bring them because while I am a big advocate about sun protection, I forget to wear sunscreen…a lot!

Kiss My Face Kids sunscreen

There’s been a lot talk about spray sunscreens and if they are harmful or not so to be safe, I didn’t use that on Elle. I did however slather her in the Kiss My Face Kids Defense Mineral SPF 30 sunscreen. It provides UVA and UVB protection and they omit fragrances and sulfates. Mineral sunscreens, I’m guessing, are the new kids on the block ( don’t quote me on that as I don’t really keep up with sunscreen thangs) in the sunscreen world. I first heard about them from Food Babe. I’m not going to act like I’m a skin scientist and know every little thing about ingredients but I do what I can and I appreciate brands like Kiss My Face because they are always very clear on what their products include and don’t include.

And I’m so grateful that this comes without fragrance. Sunscreens are already pretty funky in my book and I don’t need an extra layer of a citrus scent to help me smell…”beachy”. This stuff applies like all sunscreens.

But alas those with darker skin will endure the ghost effect. Ain’t nothin’ we can do about that. And I deal with it because at the end of the day, protection is key. Our entire family uses this sunscreen so I love that I’m using a sunscreen that’s great for my baby and great for me!

I really love this sunscreen and will stock up on it since we plan on taking a few more trips to the beach this summer. I’ll hold off on their Air Powered Spray for now until I get the verdict on it.

What sunscreens are you using this summer?

Aveeno’s Continuous Protection sunblock. SPF 85?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a lotion with so much coverage yo. This coming from someone who lives in a state where sunscreens and lotions are all over the shelves. I went to New Smyrna Beach this weekend (I later found out it was the shark bite capital of the world. Eeek!) and forgot to pack my sunscreen. Don’t give me that look. You do know brown people have SHOULD swear sunscreen and blocks, right? In fact, everyone with skin should be wearing it. I ran to a Walgreens and picked up whatever looked decent.

Did it do the trick?

Beauty Review: 100% Organic Shea Butter

Hello Clumpers, it’s Tamar! You are in for a treat today. As I explained in a previous post I have extremely dry skin. I normally just turn to cocoa butter to hydrate my thirsty body but while browsing my favorite beauty supply store I found this…

When I opened it I was kinda grossed out because the color resembles dry mustard

Its very clumpy but glides on really easily

I absolutely LOVE this product! It smells almost like cocoa butter but it almost doesn’t have a smell. I even mix it with my perfume when I’m going out.

Let me run down the uses and description (from the bottle):

Dry skin Moisturizer
Dry scalp
Skin Peeling after Tanning (if you tan)
Blemishes and wrinkles
Itchy skin due to dryness
Shaving Cream
Stretch Mark prevention and treatment
Reducing Acne
Eliminate Scalp Irritation
Restores Luster to hair
Softens Tough skin on feet Especially Heels)

Its really a great thing to have in your beauty closet! For 5.99? You cant beat that if you tried.

If you’re interested in trying it please check out your local beauty supply. I tried finding the company website but I had no luck, I did find a site that sells it here.

Keep it Clumping,

Tamar

Because the sun doesn’t discriminate…

See this?

This is brown skin. It is melanin-enriched. Many of us brown girls think that just because our skin is darker that it creates some kind of barrier against the sun. And in a sense, it does. So I guess us brown girls don’t even need to wear sunscreen.

“Girl, please.”

The sun does not discriminate. Brown girls have to protect their skin just as much as the lighter girls. And for some reason, most of us did not grow up thinking this. We couldn’t be more wrong. Everyone of ALL shades needs to protect their skin. From the fair ladies to the ebony mamas….protecting the skin is a MUST.

Each summer I experiment with different sunscreens for the face.

Meet the trio!

First up….

Olay Complete All Day moisture lotion SPF 15
($7.29-drugstores nationwide)

Olay Complete is no stranger to Clumps of Mascara. I’ve raved about this moisturizer before. And I won’t stop. My skin absolutely adores Olay Complete. For reasons unknown my skin has been acne-prone beyond belief within the past year or so. This moisturizer does not irritate my skin, clog my pores or leave me with that white film that most lotions with SPF have. Aaaand, it’s okay to wear every single day–which I do! When rubbed in, it looks like this…

Perfecto! This baby will always be a staple in my skin care routine.

Rx for Brown Skin Protect and Defend
moisturizing sunscreen

($20-click here for more info/purchase)

I am quite the Rx for Brown Skin fan. Products made specifically for skin like mine is right up my alley! When my skin goes through its dry spells, I use this! It is thicker than Olay Complete so I’m not sure how well it would work for oily skin. The good news is, it absorbs well so you aren’t left with a sticky or greasy feeling. I wish it didn’t smell SO sunscreen-y. It is a little overpowering for everyday use but this is something I’m willing to get over to protect my skin. It goes on pretty thick….

But after a good rubbing in session…

…..I am good to go! That white residue from sunscreen drives me up a wall! Don’t have that problem here.

And lastly…

Clinique Sun SPF 50 Face Cream
($17.50-Clinique.com–click here for deets)

Oh yes….when I’m going to be taking in a LOT of sun, I have to bring out the yellow tube with higher SPF. Clinique’s Sun Protection products are a must have if you are a Clinique skincare fan. Which, of course, I am…. This smells extremely sunscreen-y but it’s a smell that doesn’t bother me anymore–simply because I know I HAVE to wear it. Now….this baby is going to take a ton of rubbing in to get rid of the white residue.

And even after it’s gone, it leaves me a little greasy.

But honestly? It doesn’t bother me because it stays put, doesn’t run in my eyes when I swim and my skin doesn’t have any bad reactions to it. So heyyyy!! No complaining from me.

Brown girls….where ya’ll at? Please oh please tell me you are rocking sunscreen EVERYDAY. And if you’re not….do you feel the burn from my cyber side-eye?

I want to hear from everyone rocking sunscreen…what’s your favorite?

Brown Skin Protector,

ETA: ….but is your sunscreen SAFE for you? Thanks to reader Rachel for sharing this link. It investigates sunscreens and tells you what’s safe….and what’s not. I will be making some changes!

The Best and Worse Sunscreens

Happy Sunday, family!!

Ah yessss….just yesterday I took a nap on the grass. There was an Earth Day celebration in downtown Orlando and the weather was absolutely beautiful. I ended up knocking out by the lake. I didn’t anticipate falling asleep with UV rays banging on my skin but my skin was protected! I’ll do a review on my favorite sunscreen later but for right now check out this Total Beauty article listing the best and worse in sunscreens.

Whether we like it or not, sunscreen is a must for all of us. And according to Heidi Waldorf, M.D. of Waldorf Dermatology & Laser Associates in Nanuet, NY, we need “an SPF of at least a 15 daily.” No one wants to spend all summer slathering on sunblock, but with these reader favorites maybe it wont seem like such a chore.

Brown Beauties and Sun Protection

This post may be little delayed being that summer is more than halfway over with but better late than never, right? I hope by now you all know the importance of taking care of our skin, but even more so during those hot summer months.

In Florida we have two types of seasons: hot and hotter. I don’t remember putting on a ton a sunscreen growing up as a child; probably because of the idea that “Black folx don’t need sun protection because we are already dark” myth. Oh yes, it sounds funny but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to the beach with my girlfriends and they’ve packed everything in their beach bags EXCEPT sunscreen.

So let’s make this clear:

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen

The sun does NOT discriminate so it is important that we all take care of our skin year round but especially when the sun is blazing.

Since becoming a beauty editor, I have become a bit more cognizant in sun protection on my face as well as my body. Para mi cara, I use the following:

Olay Complete SPF 15

This has been my HG moisturizer for some months now. I doubt I will ever switch to anything else. It is wonderfully moisturizing for my relatively dry skin and isn’t so thick to where I feel like it is clogging my pores. When I break a sweat from working out, it doesn’t leave any residue. For less than $10, I can’t ask for anything more in a moisturizer. I tend to use this every day and even at night sometimes.

Clinique Superdefense Action Moisturizer SPF

Now if I know I’m going to be outside more on a particular day I pull out the Superdefense. This moisturizer is a bit thick in consistency but it doesn’t feel “heavy” which I can appreciate. I LOVE it! It has that ‘sun block-y’ smell that I know I most of us can’t stand but it was perfect for jammin’ at Bayside in Miami this past weekend. The price is steep. For $39.50 you only get 1.7 oz little jar but can I tell you a secret? I’ve been using my sample jar for about 4 weeks now. Ha!

I’ve also been playing around with Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30 but I haven’t had the best results being that it gives me that ghostly look. The product says that it is translucent but I object being that it didn’t look too flattering my on brown brown skin. Which made me sad because the concept is ideal; especially with this “mineral make-up” obsession going on in the beauty world.

We’ve covered face, but let’s not forget the body, baby. I have three different levels of SPFs that I use throughout the summer.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula SPF 15 Body Lotion

I don’t know about yall, but my Momma has been using Palmer’s products for as long as I can remember. What I don’t remember is this particular body lotion. It smells divine! Like a cookie! Now granted, I’m not the type that likes to go around smelling like food. The smell is a bit overpowering for me but pleasant to say the least. I generally use when I’m getting ready for work in the morning and know I will be hittin’ the streets after work for a “every other day” jog. Tis cheap too and provides enough protection without that “smell”.

Peter Thomas Roth Continuous Sunscreen Mist SPF 30

I’m diggin’ this sunscreen each time I wear it. The fact that it is oil-free, water-resistant and has some Vitamin E up in it, well…I mean this is perfect for a quick “walking the outlet malls” hit. I know some people have complexes about aerosol cans and while I don’t use this as much as my other sunscreen products I find that it does the job for when I really don’t have time to lather lotion up and down my arms and legs.

Banana Boat UltraDefense Sunblock Lotion SPF 80

I died laughing when I first saw this product. SPF 80. “Isn’t that a bit extreme?” I thought to myself. But alas the tube of sun blockin’ lube (LOL, I’m a mess) ended up in my basket. I don’t even think about loungin’ by the pool or on a beach chair without this baby here. It provides the ultimate protection for my melanin enriched skin.

….and don’t forget those lippies. It’s a bit on the pricey side but I stand by my MAC Lip Conditioner SPF 15. It is the greatest!

So if you’ve read this far, I’m thinkin’ you deserve the chance to win a sweet treat. I have 3 Lip Butters from Palmers. These glosses come in Dark Chocolate & Cherry AND Dark Chocolate & Peppermint and they taste….I mean feel divine on the lips. First 4 folx to email me the correct answer to the following question WIN!

Where was I born?

…..hint: it’s in Florida and it is a relatively large city. You only get one guess so good luck! Remember to email me, do not leave comments. Readers who have won within the past 6 months are ineligible. As well as personal friends and family members….yes Mom, hate to call you out again but that means you. I will announce the winners on Friday, July 18 during the FOTD Friday post.

Good luck and keep blockin’!

….oh wait, I would love to know what you other brown folx are wearing. Am I the only one that once thought we didn’t have to wear sunscreen? Speak on it!
