Amor de Lacquer: At Home Manicure tutorial

It’s Amor de Lacquer week!!!! All posts will be related to nail polish and nail care!

Welcome to another post of Amor de Lacquer….the series all about nail polish and nail care! Send me your requests, suggestions and ideas to Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com.

Here it is! The requested At Home manicure tutorial. I have been doing at home manicures for about a year now. Prior to that I was an active customer in nail salons. I wore acrylics from when I was 15 years old until I was about 22 years old. I am so glad that I have finally weened myself off of that drug and can pamper myself at home. It saves me time, money and I know that my products are sanitized.

You can use ANY product.

FIRST…I soak my nails in warm water with a little bit of hand soap. If I find that my nails could use some whitening, I use an Efferdent tablet or rub my nails with lemon. They are great whitening agents.

After soaking my nails for a good 10 minutes or so, I dry my hands and apply Sally Hansen’s Cuticle remover gel on my cuticles.

I then use my fingers to push my cuticles back.

Some people like to completely remove their cuticles. I, however, do not. I simply trim them and make sure that they look nice and neat. My cuticle nippers work GREAT for this.

I then take a crystal nail file and file my nails. I prefer square so that is the direction that I take each and every time.

To moisturize those cuticles, I use Burt’s Bee’s cuticle balm and go at it.

And lastly…I moisturize and massage my hands.

I do this at least once or week or every 10 days. Giving myself manicures not only assures that my nails are healthy and lookin’ good, but I swear it’s like therapy for me, yall. I love it.

Do you do at home manicures?

Polish Pretty,

Eyeliner 101

By popular demand (okay, only 2 of yall asked, lol), I bring you some eyeliner tips. When I tell you there is no RIGHT way to achieve the pretty simple line on the waterline, I ain’t lyin. I used to have crazy thick lines. Don’t believe me?

Exhibit A (May ’08)….

Yes family, I have learned a thing or two and thought I’d share them with you.

First–don’t think that your line has be perfect.

My preference is a gel eyeliner with an angled brush because you can control the width of your line. Pencil and liquid liners don’t allow that.

You can start any where on your lid. For the pictures, I started in the corner and worked my way out. Normally I start in the center. Do whatever works for you.

I imagine as if I’m drawing at the base of my lashes—not ON my lid. Does that make sense?

I take small strokes. Trying to make a complete straight line is sooo hard for me. Shoot, I can’t even draw a straight line on paper.

At the end I simply turn my brush for a little extra “winged” look.

See!

But look closely at those mistakes…

A swip swip of a Q-tip dipped in make-up remover can clean that baby up.

Bam bam! The video actually does a lot better job at explaining how I do this.

Preguntas? Just let me know! What do you use to get the line on the waterline? Any tips or suggestions for me?

Mascara Monday: Bourjois Pump Up the Volume Mascara

Hi pretty people. It’s another Monday which means another mascara review, so let’s go ahead and get started shall weeeee?

Bourjois Pump up the Volume Mascara

Price: 3 out of 5 ($14.50)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 4 out of 5

Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “A truly uplifting experience, rain or shine. This silicone rich formula pumps up your lashes in any weather, instantly volumizing and uplifting. While a combination of microbeads with carnuba wax act as a natural raincoat for your lashes. The double-fiber brush thickens right to the tips for fuller, darker looking lashes that never get left out in the rain.”

The truth: It is waterproof. I took a shower with this mascara on and it didn’t run whatsoever. But as far as the volume…..eh.

What I loved about it: This is my first Bourjois Cosmetics purchase (reader requested) and although I’m not terribly impressed with the mascara, my eyes were buggin’ out from the other beautiful products they have. The next time you are in a Sephora or Ulta, you MUST check them out. But onto the mascara….wellll, I love the whole “natural raincoat” explanation. It is in fact, true. You can literally go swimming with this mascara and it will hold up. So that’s great! I also love love looooove the skinny brush.

What I didn’t like: I didn’t receive THAT much volume from this mascara. I mean, it was just ohhhhkaaaay. What really gave me MORE volume was the primer that I used. I tried using it with other mascaras and it was still just, “eh”. I imagine this mascara would be great for those who already have long and full lashes and just want to take them a step up.

Would I purchase again?: No, I don’t think so. But I’m open to trying more mascaras from Bourjois Cosmetics considering they have a lot to choose from.

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it? Does anyone know how to say “bourjois” correctly. If you’ve sent me an email requesting a particular mascara to review, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have a looong list. Keep sendin’ me reviews at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com

Primer Comparisons

Happy Thursday, loves!! Can you believe that the weekend is almost here? Yessss!!! I figured I would drop a vid on one of my newest experiments. I haven’t actually compared them side by side like my girl Julie has but one can’t help but be intrigued by the idea that Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance may one up Urban Decay’s Primer Potion.

….to my newbies out there, don’t even think about applying eyeshadow without a primer. The cult fave is Urban Decay Primer Potion (also known as UDPP) but I have also found success in concealer. I just recently purchased Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance and haven’t played around in it much with am glad to see that Julie has done the comparisons.

Check out her video by clicking on the link below.

…..do you have a preference in primers on your lids?

….and have you checked out Clumps of Mascara’s column on MahoganyButterfly.com? I am so fortunate to be able to contribute to a website by and for Black women.

….I have 3 winners from Monday’s contest but I am lookin’ for oooooone more. Guess where I was born win a Palmer’s Lip Butter. Here is the post.

Big love to JulieG. Her YouTube Channel is amazement!

Stay beautiful, lovelies!

…ooohhh and here’s that wonderful v05 Flirting game again. I’ve already played 6 times today.

Mascara Monday: Prescriptives Beyond Long

Hi beautiful people!! And happy Monday to all of you. I know, I’ve been a bit ghost, but as promised I will be up on my game bringing your wonderful posts beautiful fabulousness alllll week. As usual, we are going to kick off our week with a Mascara Monday. Today we will feature:

.
Prescriptives Beyond Long

Price: 2 out of 5 (I got it for $19.50 at Macy’s in International Mall in Tampa Bay)

Packaging (Brush Wand): 5 out of 5

Overall: 3 out of 5

What it claims: “Get lashes nothing short of spectacular. Beyond Long Maximum Length Mascara extends lashes up to 40% longer. A sleek wand wraps lashes in rich color instantly lengthening and separating each to create dramatic definition. It’s eye drama all the way, without a flake, clump, or smudge in sight…”

The truth: Well, it does length your lashes but it didn’t impress me too much.

What I loved about it: I absolutely adooooore the brush. Scroll back up and check out that picture. That is EXACTLY how it looks in person. It has nice and thin bristles and the end of the mascara wand is “squared” off so you don’t get that nasty clumpy bit of mascara juice on the end. Yall know what I’m talkin’ about, right? I loathe that. This is my ideal type of brush. But that is where the joy for this mascara ends for me. By itself, it isn’t anything spectacular. I noticed a bit of length in my lashes but nothing to jump up and down about. I tried using it with one of my favorite mascaras and if still was just “eh”….which is why I gave the mascara just an
“average” score. The packaging however is just gorgeous. The bottle is beautiful and has a nice soft grippy thing to help you with your overall application. Which I liked.

Would I purchase again?: Probably not. The price is a bit too steep for me for a mascara and it just didn’t do anything for me. But I’m not against trying Prescriptives mascaras again if I’m looking to blow some money. And is it sad that one of the reasons is because their tubes are so sexy? Haaaa!!

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it? How much is too much for a mscara? If you’ve sent me an email requesting a particular mascara to review, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have a looong list. Keep sendin’ me reviews at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com

Stay beautiful!

Mascara Monday: Maybelline the Colossal Volum’ Express

Happy happy Monday! I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend! Thanks for voting on the next reviewed mascara. The Colossal one this time around but don’t worry Define-A-Lash ladies….I’ll be reviewing that one next week. So did the Colossal live up to its name?

Maybelline the Colossal

Price: 6 out of 5 (I got it for $6.99 from CVS)
Packaging (Brush Wand): 3 out of 5
Overall:
4 out of 5

What it claims:Megabrush instantly zooms on 9x the volume in one stroke, without clumps.”

The truth: Hey hey!! I like this! As a waterproof mascara, it is a bit difficult to take off but it’s not half bad.

What I loved about it: It really separated my lashes. Like amazingly. I love it!

What I didn’t like: The brush is a little bigger than I like. And it is a bit flaky, but nothing that I can’t handle.

Overall: I am really becoming a huge Maybelline mascara fan. Seriously. XXL Curl Power so far is my HG mascara but the Colossal can easily take that position. It is a really good mascara. I found that aside from getting my lashes “out there”, it also helped separating them. Did I experience clumping? Noooope! For $6.99, I can’t complain. Big ups to SlvrLips for letting us know about this baby there. I am extremely impressed and recommend this mascara to those looking for volume and length. If you are in dire need of some curl too, I suggest pumping a good eyelash curler on your lashes prior to mascara application. I’ve heard some people are hatin’ on the Colossal because of the unattractive color of the tube, but I think that’s a crazy reason to not try something new. This mascara could come in a puke green tube with gray and yellow spots and I wouldn’t care. If it works….it works!

Per request….here’s a video review of the mascara as well.

What do you think about this mascara? Have you tried it and liked it? Do mascara packagings turn you off? If you’ve sent me an email requesting a particular mascara to review, I haven’t forgotten about you. I have a looong list. Keep sendin’ me reviews at Brittany@ClumpsOfMascara.com

Stay beautiful!

Lining Larger Lips

I love my lips. I really do. But seriously….you really give a girl some issues when it comes to lining. The lack of definition is soooo frustrating. It is hard to achieve the perfect pout with larger lips. You want to make sure that your liner and lip colors compliment your lips and not make them look too crazy. So I attempted to a do a video that would help my girl and other ladies with beautifully full lips.

Muah!
