For parents of toddlers and preschoolers, it is essential to keep the littles entertained every step of the way during the trip. Happy kids means happy and safe drivers. We do more flying than driving (and you would too if your kid talked as much as mine does) but, when we do hit the road, we’re carrying the following with us.
This is a no brainer – right? Even if your kid can’t read, giving them a fun book ensures they’ll stay busy for quite some time. We love giving Elle books that have tons of pictures because she can point at the pictures and tell us what they are. This works especially well if there is no one in the backseat with her.
Dough or Clay
I highly recommend a big kid or adult to assist with this as a ton of dough in toddler hands can turn into a disaster. Elle LOVES playing with dough and it’s even more fun in the car because we can create a ton of shapes of things that we see on the road. Dough tends to keep her entertained for at least a good hour and it’s also a blast to play with during downtime once we reach our destination.
You knew this was coming, right? I mean, I am a millennial mom raising a kid who knows more about tech devices than I do. The tablet is a last resort for an irritable child who is OVER being in her car seat. When nothing else works, tunes and downloaded shows or movies are a huge hit. I can always guarantee that Elle will sit quietly once she’s got these two tech items in hand. But like I said, we save this for when she’s really close to a meltdown.
I’m a sucker for flash cards because not only do they TEACH kids things, but they’re fun, too. Usually one parent sits in the back seat to help Elle with this while the other drives. She enjoys calling out what she sees on the card and once she’s gotten bored with that, we play a matching game. It’s really a two-in-one experience.
Remember when kids used to color? It’s such a rarity these days but my toddler LOVES doodling. With assistance, we provide her with crayons and a brand-new coloring book and she enjoys creating art while we trek down the highway. This is another one of those activities that not only works great on road trips – but once we reach our destination, too. Which, by the way, is the best part!
With spacious seating, ample cargo space and available safety and entertainment technologies, there’s no better vehicle to bring the family together than the Chevrolet Traverse. Happy traveling!
