You guys, I’ve finally found it. Ever since beauty subscription boxes hit the scene, I’ve been all over them. They’re so incredibly practical for beauty lovers and folx like me who think they’ve tried it all. I’ve tried at least 7-10 boxes and over time, I find that they aren’t always consistent. But Essence Beauty Box? Woooow!
Maybe it’s the fact that many of the products are targeted to women like me, women of color! It could be that they toss in Black-owned companies and lesser known brands that I likely wouldn’t come across. Or perhaps it’s the fact that they actually feature hair care products that work for my hair type. I don’t even know but I’m a BIG fan of this beauty subscription box.
I reviewed their last 6 boxes and each box not only has a diversity of products, but I’m also pleasantly surprised EACH month. You know you’re winning when you’re surprising a beauty blogger.
That said, I’ve been doing mini reviews of these boxes on Instagram and if you’re open to a box under $20 that caters to brown girls with thick hair and interesting products, Essence Beauty Box is it.

I recently unsubscribed and it broke my heart, man. As much as I love these boxes, the anti-clutter queen that is me can’t justify a ton of products each month. Many of the products make their way into my skincare, nail, hair or makeup rotation, and others go into my travel clutch. But everything else (and there is A LOT of everything else) gets tossed in my giveaway drawer and meh, who needs THAT much stuff, ya know?
That said, if you’re wanting to treat yourself with beauty goodies, I say you take the jump and purchase, girl.
Would love to know what beauty boxes you’ve been loving these days.
FTC Disclosure: Essence was so kind enough to send me a press sample of one of these boxes but I purchased the others with my own pennies.
Brittany,
Essence sounds great! It looks like you at least get appropriate products for your skin tone and hair. I truly wish that there was a decent subscription box that I could be happy with! I previously subscribed to one of the beauty boxes (not birchbox) and I never seemed to get appropriate skincare products or too bright lipstick for someone my age (white female in early 50’s). I currently get Ipsy, and have some products in it that I can use most months!
Yay! Ipsy is one that I havent’ tried but I’ve seen lots of review of them and I think they’re pretty consistent with the offerings. Do they allow you to make specifications for the type of products that you’d use? I think all beauty boxes should have that…
