Where did the name Clumps of Mascara come from?
It kinda just came to me. When I first started blogging, the goal was to create a place where I could post my findings (and mistakes) in the beauty world. I didn’t want to achieve perfection. And what’s more imperfect than clumps of mascara? More than 10 years later and I’m finding that even when I’m not talking about beauty…the name is perfect. It describes me and the image I’m trying to portray online. I’m not perfect. I’m okay with it and I’m all about normalizing awkward, quirky women, Black girls, mothers and just anyone who feels alone in this big and loud world.
What’s your ethnicity?
I’m Black! Wakandan. More specifically, I’m Wakandan.
How old are you?
33. I will never be ashamed of my age. Growing older is such a blessing. I did a whole video about it here.
Is Clumps of Mascara your only job?
Girl no. I believe in multiple streams of income. In addition to managing Clumps, I also have a few clients that I do social media work for. I’m a content manager, community manager and I am a freelance writer. You can get more info about my professional life here. To sum things up…
What’s your complexion shade and skin type?
I am NW45 in MAC Cosmetics and my skin is normal/dry. I suffer from occasional acne and eczema.
Is your blog only for other Black girls?
Yes. If you are anything other than a richly hued woman, get out nooooow.
I’m kidding. But I die a little every time I get this question. Which is a lot. I write for everyone. I focus a lot on beauty for women of color because I feel like we aren’t targeted or even considered by most beauty brands. I like to fill in the gap. So yes, I am a proud Black woman who loves supporting Black women but come on, man…this blog is intended for any and everyone. Guys included!
I do talk about race quite a bit so if you’re one of those people who clutches their pearls when uncomfortable topics are discussed, you are in for a wild ride.
Are you on the whole “all natural” and “organic” tip?
Naw. I use what works and what I like. I tend to lean more to the natural side of things but I am definitely not scoffing at the scientific advancements in the makeup and skincare worlds.
What are some of your favorite skincare brands?
Drunk Elephant
Dermalogica
Derma.E
It Cosmetics
Clinique
Boscia
Paula’s Choice
Milk Makeup
What brands have foundations for women of color?
I got a list of 20 foundations here and 10 concealers here.
I want to start a beauty blog. Where should I start?
Check out this post. And these are things you should NOT be doing.
What camera do you use?
I’ve had a Nikon D3100 and I use 40mm, 35mm and 18-55mm lenses. I’m not a fan of flash photography so my photos are shot in either natural lighting or studio daylight lighting. I want to upgrade one day.
What do you do to your hair?
I have a blog all about my natural hair journey, mainly surrounding my journey while growing locs. I have since cut the locs and rocked a short fade/taper for the last 2 years but I am growing that out to a funkier taper. Not sure what I’ll do again. Either locs or attempt an enormous fro. I’m a bit impatient so who knows what will happen. I LOVE color. I’ve done everything from red to pink to (accidental) green, blue and purple.
How would you describe your style?
Funky and bohem chic. I love bold colors and prints. I adore skirts and flowy dresses. I do not like heels or tennis shoes (except when running). I try my best to wear clothes that fit my body type.
Where are you located?
I’m in Orlando, baby! I was born and raised in Florida. One day I’ll leave. But only to an island.
Why aren’t you 100% beauty focused anymore?
I got bored, man. Clumps of Mascara is a veteran and while I still enjoy makeup and skincare, my goodness…there are so many more things that interest me.
