Lately I’ve been having a rough time with my kids. Yeah, I said it. Parenthood isn’t always rainbows and sunshine. I’m perfectly okay with admitting this and to be honest…I wish more parents were. We can love our kids and still get annoyed with them AND admit it, ya know?
Raising a very vocal almost 5-year old is leaving me with an insane amount of gray hairs, y’all. I kid you not. I entered this year with maybe 3-4 hairs and now I think I’ve quadruple that amount. Each day seems to be more intense than the last with a few good moments sprinkled throughout.
But it mostly isn’t easy.
When I feel like I’m losing it, I don’t want to yell, and EB and I just can’t see eye to eye on anything, we do the one thing that instantly makes us both feel better.
We go outside.
Honestly, I’m not sure I want to live anywhere that doesn’t have tropical weather because being able to go outside to take a deep breath, take in the sights and bop around palm trees when it’s 80 degrees in November is practically crucial for me as a person and especially as a parent.
This is hilarious because I didn’t grow up loving outdoors.
You know how some people feel their best when they’re outside and doing something like…hiking? Yeah, that’s not me. While I do enjoy a walk on the trail by my house and don’t mind hiking from time to time, I’m perfectly okay doing indoor activities, too. I mean, I live in Florida where our temperatures are usually always sky high – sometimes being inside is the only suitable option.
Despite that, I still want my babies to enjoy nature. What isn’t there to enjoy? This Florida girl has always enjoyed the beach and one of the best things about where we live is that there is always a beautiful park nearby.
We live for parks – even the ones that don’t have swings and playgrounds. EB and Bub get the chance to explore on their own. They’ll climb trees, collect acorns, pretend bridges are airplanes and chase each other until they fall out on the ground from laughing so hard.
They get to go out to the clouds and have breezes dry their tears. Going outdoors is like…well, it’s like therapy. Even if it’s only 5 minutes of outdoor playtime or quiet time, we all feel better. This is what it’s all about. These are the memories I remember most of my childhood. You couldn’t pay me to be a kid again but I’d do anything to relive truly carefree moments without the stress and drama.
EB starts kindergarten next year and while Esposo and I are so serious and concerned with her academic success, we can’t forget about the things that help get and keep her healthy. It includes regular time outside but it’s also involves making sure both kids are visiting their doctors and dentists as needed.

Smiling faces after 2 hours of playtime in the Florida sun. This is more like it.
